    People who drive ICE cars have no idea what awaits them. I loaned our 24kw Tekna to a customer today also a mechanic who had never driven an EV before. When he came back in it he was purring at how good it was to drive. He now wants one.

      Nadeem Ahmed 14 Volvo 240 ranged from DL to GLT and tuned turbo charged. 5 740, with turbo. 1 Saab 900i, 3 VW Passat TDi, 1 BMW E39 520 i, 1 VW Rabbit GTi 1 Nissan Leaf and the car i also still have today a Volvo V70N 2.0T.
      That what I have owned, what ever that have to do with anything. The Nissan is mutch worse than the Volvo 740 comfort wise. Performance wise it's slower than the Volvo V70N and this one also beats the car in performance. Mutch safer than the Rabbit GTi. Less economical than s VW Passat TDi.
      That is from the cars i owned.
      Compared to the cars i have driven. As Im a driver picking up cars on my spare time. Been driving som fine good cars some is Even better than in my owned list.
      So what is your list, do you have anything other than shit BMWs,
      Ford Galaxy or Tourans?

      @@christianfalch3182 dude why so aggressive? You said the Nissan is the worst car you owned. So I was curious as to what you've owned. After all the Nissan is a relatively cheap mid sized hatchback. E.g. I've owned a porsche 944, Lancia Dedra turbo, Maserati Ghibli GT, Maserati Quattroporte, Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 t-spark. Alfa Romeo 166 3.0 V6, Mercedes ML320cdi, Nissan Leaf 24kwh, Kia Soul EV 30kwh. It would not be fair to compare it with most cars I've owned. But compared to similar cars with similar price to own and run. It compares really well. High level of kit. Much better performance than cars with small efficient petrol or diesel engines. And better refinement than those too. Is it as fast or as well handling or as much of a drivers car as the others I've owned. No. But it's not supposed to be either. But compared to any other car with comparable ownership cost... It's really really good.

      You assume that people who drive ICE cars have no idea what awaits them. Lots of them do, but can't make it work until a lot of things change - and that's the most frustrating thing.

    The main thing I was worried about with an EV was the hassle of plugging it in everyday, so I went for a Zoe ZE40 so that I only have to plug in once a week (saves me over a minute every week, that's a whole hour in a year).

      every day, and zoe once a week? err that doesn't sound right. I plug in my 30kw Leaf 1/2 a week, zoe would be maybe 1 time a week. At the end of the day is it really hassle? I plug in my phone everyday, this is no different....

      I don't really get the "hassle" of plugging it in comments, it can easily take over 10 minutes to fill up a car at the petrol station when it's busy, much easier to just plug in even once a day.

    I'm similar to you in that I've been driving EV for 2.5 years and am on my second Zoe. First Zoe did 14000 miles before hand back and current Zoe has so far 6971 miles since 1st March. Where we differ is that we only have one car (wife doesn't drive) and we get all our driving needs from it. The new Zoe's bigger battery makes quite a difference and would IMO suit 99% of most peoples driving needs. We've just been on holiday in Norfolk and travelled there from the Stoke-on Trent area with only one half hour break for a picnic and charge in both directions.

    Greetings from across the pond. Your review is essentially the exact same thing I went through before buying my Chevy Bolt EV. Did all the homework, just like you. But after I bought it...the what if's started.
    Until the first day of the commute...
    I commute 162 miles a day and this car has been a godsend. 238 mile range makes my daily commute a breeze and the money I am saving is astounding...even by American gas prices at $2.38 per US gallon.
    EV's are the answer. I will never go back to a gasser again...no matter what the price of gas is.

    Still more confirmation I'll be getting my own EV soon.
    Another great advantage for me you touched on is the ease of driving. I drive an EV at work so know how relaxing they are to drive.

    We are getting our EV on Saturday. We have to wait a few weeks for our home charger installation, but I'm sure it'll be well worth it. We have rapid chargers nearby at Morrisons!

    Well I have a 75 mile round trip for work, five days a week and have no problems in a first generation 2012 Nissan Leaf. That, and I charge it on a 110v outlet! It saves me at least 5 hours a week being able to drive in the HOV lanes as a bonus.

    I do 120 miles on one charge per day. Like you I have an EV to save money. I was spending over £60 a week in diesel before. Now less than half of that in leccy. Once you go electric, you don't go back to ICE.

      The biggest draw back of electric cars is the purchase cost, my commute is currently 190 miles a day (although I don't go to office every day) so an electric car could save me loads, except I am no where near being able to afford to buy one.

    You asked about lunch ideas. Look into a steamer lunchbox. Idk how much power it will draw but I doubt it will have much of a impact.
    Also thanks so much for making these videos. You have helped me immensely to get over my range fears to the point I'm looking into getting a EV, and not worrying if it doesn't have a 400+ mile range.

    Great video and a real example of what these cars can do. An antidote to the other type of video with people dressed in arctic gear and fiddling about with dysfunctional charge points in the pouring rain. Very good point about them being ideal in a 2 car set up.

    Hi Andy , I'm up to 24k in 15 months in my 30kwh leaf . I do a minimum 320 miles a week. Just to work and back. I work shifts so have to charge during the day my calculations put me at £720 in electricity compared to £2880 in diesel at 50 mpg. I'm quids in. Like you my wife has a petrol car Kia picanto which was supposed to be the first car and mine was for my work commute. The reverse has happened . The leaf is now my first car and my wife now wants a ZOE .

      And the government are about to raise VAT to 20% for car charging because they are losing revenue from the pumps. £28billion is raised from the pumps, when the pumps are gone, overall VAT will go up and no doubt other taxes on wages or you'll pay by the mile as a road user because all car will be fitted with trackers with personal IDs attched to them, you'll most probably get a monthly bill, mark my words.

    Hi I have a question plz 😃 I've been watching your vlogs about the electric car you use and they are really good 👍🏻 my question is just about your total average miles in a week combined with the miles that your wife adds to it as well ? Just the work miles only and in the vlog I think you said you charge this car every night ? So can you tell me if you say charged the car say Sunday night ready for Monday morning and didn't top up until it was ready for a good full charge in order to get through the rest of the week ! How many miles roughly or how many days would you both get from Monday mornings full charge ? With out topping up over night. I hope you kinda understand my question thank you

    I have been looking at getting a Leaf or an iOn and what I found was that the 2011-2012 cars have a battery SOH of around 75%-80% which is about "End of Life" with an £8k bill approaching :(
    Yes the Leaf batteries have gone up £3k in the last few months.

      Was on "Transport Evolved",Leaf batteries are starting to fail now so they have increased the prices so people have to buy a new car instead. Batteries are actually in short supply to all manufacturers they can not make enough ,fast enough. Try ordering a Kona.

      @@shawng5799 ....and in about 2 years when the older cars are only worth around £9,000 and the battery needs replacing the car will be beyond economical repair unless of coarse you can buy the car for £1000.00 and if you part exchange the car you will only get £1000.00 for it, WOW! that's what you call depreciation. With a blown up ICE engine you can fit a second hand engine, but you can't fit second hand batteries.

    What range do you have if travelling with 2 adults, with a boot full of stuff at a steady 70 to 80mph.

      80 miles ish. The affect on the car is the same as it is on a petrol one in terms of efficiency losses at speed. Going quicker just means longer to charge so it doesn't save you any time ultimately. Takes me longer in the Leaf than my ICE but saves me a ton of money. Time vs Money. Lifes a compromise.

    When I was a service engineer I used to have a salad made up in a tupperware box bit of chicken or ham or cheese even chopped pork or a chopped sausage sometimes quiche + nice flask of coffee with the milk stored in a little bottle in the bottom of the flask :)

    Am I right in thinking from what you say here, that the Leaf has to be plugged in in order to be able to pre-heat the car using the app?

      No, it can be preheated or cooler either way, you just don’t lose almost anything when plugged in, like in a morning when you set off.

    200 miles to week to work Nissan leaf 2011. Then 40-70 miles at weekend. Leaf is not the best car but its saves money on the every day trips where you just what to get to work and back.

      Crash UK it won’t save much since all the investment in front. Nissan Leaf is 35k car which almost 2x price as small size hatch back car like Kia Soul Honda Fit Nissan Versa. Also the battery only last less than 10 years and about 80 - 100k miles. And you have to invest either new EV or battery. So tell me what is cheaper now..

      Peter Robinson Are you looking to buy a Leaf or EV? Do you drive out of your area often? Or long distances every now and then? I would recommend waiting for the newer model Leaf with active cooling or another EV that has an active thermal management system. The Aussie heat and cold will be tough on a Leaf without an active thermal management system to help keep the battery from overheating or getting too cold. Also, the vast distances sometimes needed to be covered by Aussies moving between cities etc is more than most places.
      In summer, you can expect a battery to be constantly above the middle mark, which usually only leaves 1 fast charge before you get the battery hit and the 2nd charge time slowed (rapidgate). Winter is great for keeping battery to down but you will still get 1-3 fast charges before rapidgate starts. Also, winter will bring the range down to 220-250kms instead of 300-340km in summer. I’m a 40kwh Leaf owner (bought Feb this year) and have had the car in all seasons. Also, I’m an Aussie living in Japan.

      I am well aware of the so called rapid gate. Living in Tasmania means if I traveled from nor to south there would be only the need for one charge. As my wife is disabled and can't travel fare most of my travel is only local.

      If you have a home charger or a charger you can stop at, it will be OK. You will typically get 250~300kms from 1 charge mixed driving. Any thing over, I'd say 90km/h, will lower the range (typically). If you drive 100-110km/h, you're good for anywhere between 140-200km range depending on terrain. If you were to charge at a lower %, say 20, a charge of 30 mins will only get you to around 70%. This will also tend to create a lot of heat so the battery temperature will go up. Best bet is to charge around 30-40% charge left. Anything locally, and with a home charger or charger nearby, you will have no issue with a Leaf. I have a family of 4 and only use fast chargers (typically the Nissan chargers) and 80% of the time drive locally too. It has been great for us, saved me a lot of money too. All the best on your EV purchase if you go ahead with it.

    Hey Fella, I commute 80miles a day plus lots, most, of the mileage when we are both out and about. I can manage to do the whole trip by charging once. I don't, because sometimes, stuff happens and I just want to go; this isn't range anxiety more life anxiety.

    I have a Nissan micra 04 plate. I spend £40 on petrol a month. It’s such a tin to drive but I only use it for school runs however it’s starting to fail now. Do I fix it for £200 or go crazy with a zoe? 😂

    I use to take a Tupperware box with a taste salad in it, grapes tomatoes mixed leaves perhaps a few nut and a filling, smoked trout or hard boiled egg or a few prawns, so much better that a limp sandwich. An Indian guy I new use to have a thermos with veg curry and chapatis in the lid god it smelt lovely

    Hi, we’re thinking about getting an EV and just wondered if you’ve ever had any problems with charging such as conventional cars parked in an EV bay at service stations or some “Clown “ disconnects the vehicle while you’re away? Thanks. Peter

      Sometimes can be blocked (ICED) but not so much at service areas. A rapid is locked by the charger when charging so cannot be unplugged (and at 50kWh would be immensely stupid). All other charger types can be locked by the car if you choose so no one can unplug you.

      Thanks for that...it was something that occurred to my wife who was thinking about the scenario of taking a break at the services, coming out x hours later only to find the cable has been disconnected or taken and then having to wait even longer or being marooned with no cable. I didn’t realise the cables locked into place. That’s reassuring. Peter

      peter hughes and the chargers will have their own cables, so no need to worry there (although there will be some areas that might just have a charging box but no cable, but I’m guessing this is not a common thing)

    Hardly ever have to plug my car in....the kids fight over whose turn it is! 5 seconds every other day, that's almost a quarter of a minute I'm gaining over you every week.
    I don't have E7 though because the same kids also use the electric shower at peak times! ££££

    Hi, sorry to bother you again (next time it’ll be the salesman!) One final question, you say you plug the car in at home to stay charged up. Just wondering if the Leaf has a means of stopping you driving off while still plugged in? I know it’s a little extreme but having owned a conventional car for xx years I’m used to just jumping in and driving off. I’m only too aware of what can happen in a momentary distraction and we’ve all heard of people leaving the garage forecourt and leaving their fuel cap behind or the flap open, lights on overnight etc. Thanks for your patience, take care.       That's kind of a myth. For one the battery isn't 100% when the car says it is to stop this very thing.

      @@ElectricVehicleMan that's not true for the Leaf. Does the Leaf regenarate when you charged it to full?....... No, that means it is really full. It's no myth.... It is (chemical) fact. There are Cars with a sixty four kilowatt hours battery who when you charge them to a 100% still regenerate. For example the Kona. That battery is actualy bigger than they tell you.

      One of Euan McTurk's recent videos dispelled the 100% charge myth. Also, something I didn't know was that most EVs will only do cell balancing once the car is fully charged. So in the respect by not charging to full may even degrade the battery quicker. Great video Andy. I'm curious, what actually is your day job?

      It's not a myth. A Leaf has a 30kWh battery but has only 27.4kWh of useable battery. The 'missing' part is used as a buffer to stop the car charging the battery to an actual 100% or discharging to 0%. The car stops the charge, not the charger. If the car is at (an indicated) 100% then it doesn't regen, in fact it's only when it get's to around 93-94% that max regen is allowed to stop it overcharging. If you use LeafSpy it gives you the actual battery charge %, not the one the car tells you.

      The Leaf doesn't have active cooling right now and does degrade faster but for most people that wouldn't be an issue.
      If you are road tripping hundreds of miles and fast charging a lot that is the Leafs weakness. Apparently the 64kwh leaf will have active cooling which will definitely solve that problem.

      Charging batteries to 100% can reduce lifespan but when the Leaf says it's at 100%, it's not. There's a buffer at the top and bottom end of the battery to stop total charge or total discharge. That's why a 30kWh Leaf has only 27.4kWh of 'useable' battery. The rest is set aside so it never reaches 100%.

    Would be good to see someone do a 500 mile weekly - with no off-street parking. How frequently to charge? How much in electricity from public chargers? How to charge at the weekend when you’re away from the chargers at work? So many questions...

      Cal Peters you should find out what charging options are close to you both at home and near work. You might have to use a dealer charger once a day or two.
      After I drive my 40kwh Leaf down to 30-40% I charge it once before going home so it’s ready for the next day if I need it. If you have no other options, as I do, use the dealer fast charger and spend that 30-40mins to sleep/rest/read/have a coffee or dinner ... list goes on.
      How frequently to charge-this depends on your day to day driving. Do you drive long distances everyday or is it every second day? If every day, charge everyday.

      I do 100 miles per day (50 there, 50 back). Dealers aren't convenient enough for me to drive to them to charge up, certainly not as convenient as spending 5 minutes at a petrol station. There are chargers at my workplace, but they cost 30p/KwH - so aren't the cheapest. I then need to have 100 miles to do my commute (back home and back to work the following day) plus anything I do after work and into the weekend. Definitely not a straightforward thing to consider... 😕

      Caine Frost Yeah I’ve given PHEVs some thought... it’s whether they actually work out any cheaper to run at this stage; as I would effectively only be doing 40 out of 100 motorway miles on electricity - so those other 60 miles would be less economical than an equivalent diesel. Depends how it all balances out with cost of electricity etc. Difficult to get hold of a Golf GTE at the moment, so it seems...

      Also worth looking into hybrids in your area. Though they sound boring, they can be economical driving highway speeds for the distance you drive. Hybrid camry's have been good highway cars (co-workers drive a lot of rentals over great distances - Camry has shown most economical).

    I test drove the Tesla Model 3 with awd and I'll pass.
    PRO: peppy
    CON:
    - Stiff suspension, more stiff than even my C7 Corvette Stingray.
    - In the parking garage, steering wheel was heavy and felt almost like no power steering.
    - Hate Tesla's regenerative braking, felt like I slammed on the brakes abruptly and hard every time I took
    my foot off the throttle. Risk of getting rear-ended. Gets fatiguing holding your foot so lightly on the
    throttle in an attempt to maintain speed.

    - freebie only comes in black color, other colors are +$2k
    - freebie only comes with 18 inch steel wheels and hub caps, aluminum wheel is +$2k

    - even with tax credit, you still have to pay tax on that amount.

    And not once did you have to visit a Service station, stand in the cold breathing fuel vapours, negotiate a financial transaction with somebody who wants to sell you chocolate at a discount if you buy 2. Yes 10 minutes a week unless you have to divert from your route or there is queue at the bowser. One of the ICE joys you miss out on with an EV.

      Jerry Looney model 3 is completely different to a Leaf in almost every aspect. You’ll have no issues with range unless you drive long distances but if you have the rapid chargers you will be fine. You wouldn’t need to charge often if your day is similar to what was shown in this video.

    I don't know if you could do this for a future video but . . . my impression of EVs I get stuck behind on the way to work (twisty, up and down 'B' road for 20 miles) is that they really struggle on hills. Could you do a video where you made a meaningful comparison between an ICE car and an EV say starting the pull up a long slope at X mph then see what the speed is at the top? (Of course, it could just be that a significant number of EV drivers prefer to drive at walking pace and never look in their rear view mirrors!)

      Most EV's can out accelerate an average ICE car up to 40-50mph due to max torque always been available and no gears. I'd suggest it's the person driving it rather than the car itself. 0-30mph the Leaf is as quick as a new Golf GTI for example. The handling however in all bar maybe the i3 is setup for comfort more than handling.

      I suggested the hill-climb version because accelleration on the flat is irrellevant to real driving situations- it's the mass which has to be hauled up a hill and that comes down to basic physics. I might have to book a test drive and try it myself.

      The Leaf has the equivalent of around 110bhp and around 310nm of torque. Until you get past 40-50mph it's pretty nippy and as there is no rev range to hit or right gear to be in, if anything it's easier.

      Acceleration and hill climbing is the same physics. I've never felt my LEAF was inadequate on hills (and I live in the foothills of the Pennines, not far from EVMan, plenty of steep hills everywhere)

      @@ElectricVehicleMan If you are on a standard tariff then it doesn't matter what time of day you charge the car, cost wise anyway. A lot of people (mistakenly) believe using appliances such as washing machines /dishwashers at night is cheaper, it's only cheaper if you are on a tariff such as E7 as mentioned above.
      Shame about the dashcam channel, I really enjoyed your vids, and a lot of others did too.

    what always makes me laugh is the grid cant take it lark. we use far more during the day then we would slow charging our cars on a night. think of all the things that are on during the day offices/factories/schools,recycling plants ;-) people need to think for themselves instead of regurgitating false information....oh wait thats what the general public always do.

    I'd say you've changed the opinion on EV's, especially over the time I've been subbed (have you stopped doing dashcam comps?). I could quite easily work an EV into my life, even a trip to Whitby (from Sheffield, about 120miles) is within the realms of doable with an EV. However, the cost of actually getting an EV is beyond my finances. But I'm glad to not write them out of my life, and maybe something to look at in the future

      Min wage job! With a house to pay for too.
      Currently, for my Peugeot 207 1.4hdi at insurance group 5, its £600 insurance (with breakdown + business). Annual mileage about 10k.
      I'd prefer to go down the route of actually owning the car, rather than lease or finance. it would annoy me someone telling me I'm driving too much! However, I'd say its too much to go for, as a bank loan seems to be double a car payment per month (note: I'm quickly looking at this while my next compilation formats, and I've never looked this stuff up before, nor is it a world I know)
      Looking at the iZoe (non battery loan, per your advice) its about £270 a month for a PCP.....
      My mileage (I doubt you watch my vids) is currently a few mile commute, and a weekly/bi-weekly countryside drive (about 60-100miles), plus day to day stuff. Probably 150miles a week.
      Overall, I'd say a Zoe suits me. 170-true range (as said, could comfortably get to Whitby with a charge there to return), 90bhp (Which would be very different to a normal 90bhp vehicle) and I only really drive by myself. (Leaf is too much a family car for me, and the I3, to me, looks awful)
      But this is looking at buying the car new, second hand would be an option

    The vast majority of people don't have a drive so charging like that is impossible. It's just not practicable for us, if it were is have an EV by now.

      I'm leasing a Kia soul EV. £199/ month. I was spending nearly that just on petrol. I charge the car 2 or 3 times a week at £2 a time or so. If you use your car on a regular basis I don't see how you can't end up saving. No road tax. And free parking in my borough too. And much cheaper maintenance too.

    May I ask you! Why don't you use two EV's instead of one if both need a car sometimes of course at different times two EV's would make better money sense as you rightly state the running costs are 10% compared to the ICE version? Seems to me, two money saving EV's would have more of your hard earned wages for nicer stuff than Petrol etc. on the ICE car! I not being picky I just saying? it makes better sense since one EV could have say a long range the other could have the normal range so you could choose which one both of you needed? I know now you share one EV, But two be better. even in the long term since the tech on them are getting better all the time?

      Our other car (Mini Cooper S) only get's 5-6k a year put on it so fuel costs aren't an issue really. If we had two, due to the increased cost of an EV compared to an ICE it wouldn't make as much sense. There's also no 'longer range EV' anywhere near in budget compared to the other car. It's also immense fun to drive and as a motor head (like both EV & petrol cars) I'm not quite ready to give up a nice one on nice Yorkshire country roads. - If you haven't already, watch the 'Are EV's Boring vid' in my channel.

      There's at least one TH-cam video by someone (in Scotland) who does exactly that. There are several public chargers in the area where she drives regularly. It just needs simple planning.

      It is unusual, and one of the things non-EV drivers don't really get is the convenience of charging at home, or at least of not having to make trips and detours to petrol stations to refuel. But at least an EV is possible with no home charger.

      yes, I have now looked, their E7 rate is a fraction of a penny away from what I just signed up to, but your tariff with the 4 hour evening peak, and the rest of it much cheaper is .... interesting, but probably wouldn't work with my other half and our 3 teenagers
      I guess that will be more common by the time I have to choose again in another 2 years

      yes, i am with green energy, under 5p per kw between 11pm and 7am . fully charged for £1-50 gives me 120 miles if i dont use the heater or air con. when the PCP comes to a end i might go for a hyundai or kia. due to the longer range.

    You are correct in that EV's are nearly (but not quite) at the point which will suit the needs of the majority of car owners.
    But with the rumoured Hyundai Ioniq with 64KW/H battery due out in the next 6-12 months (or maybe less) this will potentially be an affordable EV with a realistic range of 250-300 miles per charge.
    Add to this the ever growing EV charging network and things will start to look very good for EVs in the next 3-5 years or more.
