Its actually very subtle: her gift is the same as Abuela Alma's. She's connected to the house itself. That's why she can communicate with it, and why the house doesn't come back alive until SHE puts the doorknob in.
Or, in other words, her door was the house's FRONT door!

The thing with the picture bit, for me, is that she didn't even try to get into the picture. It wasn't like they told her she wasn't allowed. Abuela said "everyone gather round!" And Mirabel didn't move. That said... how badly must she have internalized all of this to assume she's not invited into the family picture?

    Here’s my take:
Mirabel was never given a gift because she was meant to expose how the grandma unconsciously projected her repressed trauma to her family by setting them up to unattainable expectations that was crushing them from the inside. If she received a gift, she would have been like most of her family; pressured, depressed, and anxious to even notice what was going on and in turn leaving no one to save the house and the family.

I love how the curly hair and glasses on Mirabel aren't being used to tell the audience that this character is suppose to be seen as ugly. I don't remember if Disney ever used the trope, but it's nice to see those shown in a positive way. There was a concept art of Isabella mocking Mirabel's glasses, but they didn't use it in the film.

    For non colombians or latinos:
A little explanation of the historial context of the song and scene of 'Dos Oruguitas', Colombia in the past suffered a great wave of violence, especially of armed conflicts, criminal gangs and drug trafficking, this problems start affectting people who lived in villages, indigenous and afro-descendant communities, the criminal gangs went to the villages to loot, burn them, imprison children for their wars and even make massacres in them, so many of those who lived in those types of villages doesn't have other option but to leave their homes in search of a safer place.
Los desplazados or forced displacement is a big problem in Colombia and other parts of latinoamerica as it continues to happen to this day. As a latina, I'm glad that disney reference this huge problem in colombia with respect because is really a big part of their history and families.

I’ve seen a lot people say that the reason Mirabel doesn’t get a gift is because she’ll be the keeper of the miracle after her grandmother passes and that she’ll be the new person in charge. The miracle/candle needs someone to keep the magic alive and that job will pass on to Mirabel :)

Honestly, Abuela is probably my favourite character because of just how complex she is. She's such a grey character, though she's leaning more heavily to the good spectrum. She's genuinely a good person, she really does want to help her community and we can tell underneath her surface she cares for her family. But because of her trauma and loss then being given a gift, a second chance, she is so desperate not to lose it again that she ends up hurting her family. In the end, there's no more candle. The candle was born from trauma, Abuela keeping it around just shows that she hasn't completely moved on from that trauma. Then in the end, when their magic returns but there's no more candle, Abuela was finally able to move on. The gift no longer came from a traumatic memory, it now comes from the love of the family. Abuela is so complex, so well written, she ends up being such a fascinating character to analyse. Because of that, she is definitely one of my favourite characters.

It's great to see someone who is old, proud and made sacrifices own up to their mistakes to someone they're supposed to be respected by, to someone who they had previously blamed for the things that went wrong. I don't see older people take responsibility often, especially in family.

I dont know if its clear or not, but abuela never got to hear the prophecy bruno made, from her point of view she asked for a prophecy about mirabel, then bruno never returns! its understandable the way she has anxiety about her role in keeping the miracle going- her behaviour to mirabel was not okay though

the nuts thing is during almost the whole movie I kept rolling my eyes and getting more and more angry with Abuela until Dos Oruguitas where we get to see her perspective. The villain in this whole thing was intergenerational trauma.
I'm not Colombian so I can't speak for them but as a black woman I did/do see so much of this within my own family.
Yes Abuela was definitely wrong for how much pressure she put not just on her son who couldn't control the future but just see it but also on her grandchildren because she's stuck in two cycles. She demands perfection from Isabela because she can have the perfect life, spouse and family without hardships she wanted and she demands constant strength from Luisa because she's had to be strong for an entire town for over 50 years so there's no time for weakness in her mind while Mirabel is the free spirit she used to be before colonialism took her husband from her; someone she misses being.
she never healed from her trauma and that carried over into the next generations.
The antagonist was Abuela but the villain was the stain and continued trauma that is not dealt with within families, mostly families of colour

As a Colombian, I just want to say that you hit the nail right on the head. For decades so many people in my country have been forced to leave their homes due to violence, whether that was due to civil wars or drug violence or guerrilla violence. The abuela in this movie reminds me so much of my own abuela, even down to her physical features and her mannerisms. As a Colombian it all felt extremely personal to me and I felt very emotional leaving the theater after seeing this movie, but one thing that I've loved is seeing how other latinos, especially children of immigrants, react to it. Even if they're not Colombian, the story of that intergenerational trauma speaks to them, and your comment makes me realize that this theme can extend to so many other immigrant families and families of color

@@livywithane I might have looked too much into that but I can see Camilo’s constant shape shifting as her having had to take on or shift to fit numerous roles in her life: mother, protector, leader, abuela while Delores might be a need for constant control: if you hear everything you can control the situation before it gets out of hand (eg, her making Delores listen for what Isabela’s betrothed wants in order to have Isa ready to play that role perfectly). I can’t think of anything for Antonio so that’s why I might be thinking TOO much into this haha

Some people think Mariano is much but honestly I think he’s a good match for Dolores. Considering who her parents are it’s understandable and are good match as well. One is emotional but passionate. The other is more grounded and supportive. Mariano is just a romantic that moves as a fast pace. Dolores calms him down, like Felix with Pepa, but admires his passion. Dolores probably felt like her gift was a problem to be with people because people keep secrets and she hears everything. Mariano is loud and open showing that they can be themselves around each other.

I think the miracle is a combination of many factors: the love energy originated from Abuelo's sacrifice, the grief from Abuela's tears spilled on the ground, Abuelo's spirit trying to save his family by becoming one with the candle, and also some divine intervention/justice (since God/saints/angels intervening when good virtuous people suffer some kind of injustice are common occurences/stories in Latino American culture and popular Catholicism. The town in wich Encanto is located on is also clearly and heavily influenced by Catholicism, as we can see with the priest and the local church)

As a latino i was struck at the thematic similarities this film has with Coco. Both films are about a family suffering from generational trauma. The main difference is that the Rivera family in Coco is not dealing with their trauma and its not until Miguel steps up and reveals their real history himself that their trauma is addressed and dealt with. Here in Encanto, the Madrigal family is well aware of their generational trauma but the way they've gone about dealing with it is via a toxic compulsion to earn the second chance they've been given by being as perfect as possible and Mirabel steps up to call out the bullshit and usher in a more healthy and constructive way to deal with their trauma. The reason i brought up my latino heritage is because after this film I found myself asking a humorous question. What does it say about latin family structures that both times we got represented by Disney it was about dysfunctional families dealing with shitty behavior?

Can we talking about Bruno being a homie? Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did.
He was described as Seven foot frame by Camilio (shape-shifting boy) probably because he was a kid and Bruno just seemed tall to him. Plus after years of hearing bad stories about it, it probably elevated that image to about seven foot, towering, creepy man.

It was only until Mirabel said the miracle was dying 'cause of her and Casita collapsed that she actually opened her eyes and finally addressed her trauma at the place her husband died.

And all the songs are just amazing, they all have meaning and tell a story, not like most of the songs in the movies that are here just becose it’s a Disney movie (Louisa sings about pressure and that she is not OK, Mirabel sings about being not OK and wants to make her family proud, Isabela sings about hiding her true self and being perfect just becose she is the Golden child and has to be flawless, etc.). You see what is missing would be what would be missing if you started Lord of the Rings with Return of the King, and had to piece the rest together with flashbacks.
Each of the children's gifts were to protect the family, and we really did not get scenes where they each used their gifts to do that. I realize it adds to the family disharmony and would be perhaps another hour longer to go through each child and so on. I mean a shapeshifter with no big melodrama? A plant wizard that only does party bouquets?, A weather wizard that only does inconvenient rain? OK that was good.
I saw this movie in Spanish, and OMG the songs were so much better! Better sung, better orchestrated, all of it was musically better and more enjoyable to hear.

I think you should watch the official lyrics video to see who sings what

okay, seriously, Bruno does a whole ritual to get just one vision, so he made all that just to say the guy would be bald or someone would get fat? Damn, that seems kinda unnecesary

I felt the same way you did at first honestly. It didn't hit all the marks for me on my first watch but actually the more I have watched it the more it has grown on me. I just have it on in the background while I am working today and when the songs come on it puts me in a good mood. Lin Manuel Miranda definitely has a specific style and it's very "broadway/stage musical" compared to most Disney films in my opinion, but the more I listen to the songs the more I like them. We Don't Talk About Bruno and Surface Pressure are definitely playlisted!

"...is she not in the picture? Oh that's rude!..."
Well, _to be fair,_ no one was _excluding_ her, and no one was making sure everyone was there. Abuela called for 'everyone' to get in the picture, and everyone _except_ Mirabel moved over and picked a spot, on their own because they, y'know, can _look after themselves_ for things, and just arranged themselves for a spur-of-the-moment 'oh, we should take a picture' idea. If Mirabel _wanted_ to be there, she _could_ have been. _She_ chose _not_ to be. Now... the _reason_ she chose not to be, her feelings, how much she was hurting... _entirely_ understandable, but let's _also_ understand that she _was not excluded,_ ultimately she excluded _herself_ due to how she was feeling.
    "...where is she..."
Yeah, the Bruno's room sequence has... a _lot_ of problems. It's clear they had different ideas at different times and didn't bother to 'construct' the room in any sense and move Mirabel through it. The ledge she ends up swinging over to the door on is clearly no visible in the overhead shot, and when she swings there's _no way_ she was close enough to land even if she'd let go. It's... a mess.
"...but... is it bad that Bruno's pointing out what's gonna happen..."
First time I watched it, that was _exactly_ what I was thinking. He just _predicts_ the future, he doesn't _cause_ it. Knowing the future lets you make _plans_ for the future. There _are_ times you don't _want_ to know (we all hate spoilers, after all, and what's that if not revealing some bit of future information), and yet for a _lot_ of things... well, it's beneficial.
This next bit is in order, but a separate line... for reasons that will become clear:
"...I saw the shock on the girlie's face..."
Did you notice the... side-eye... from the _other_ girlie?
"...also just realized Isabella keeps saying she's fine..."
Actually _Dolores_ is the one singing that bit, the one whose love was out of reach.
Anyway... this leads to the reveal of the villain of this movie:

Ah, if only I could sympathize with the story....
...I am latino, btw, and both sides of my family have intergenerational trauma. But unfortunately, it has devolved into full on abuse and toxicity that will not be healed just by talking about it.
If it could, one of my greatest fears for a while wouldn't have been that someone in my house would get so tired of taking care of my quickly deteriorating grandma that they'd try to kill her.

In defense of Abuela…. Rewatch it at look at it from her point of view. She don’t know what others are going thru and push for the best even though it to much pressure on her grandchildren. She strives for the best for the community. She put them FIRST over the family but is that wrong for a Ruler to care about the people of the community first. Imagine being the matriarch of a family AND community. She treated maribel bad but she was trying to keep the magic/gift that her husband sacrificed (which she believed was the purpose and reason for the magic) alive. She would do anything to to keep the magic/hope/purpose/sacrifice alive for the fam and community. She wants/will fight anyone to keep Pedro name/sacrifice alive to keep the Gifts/candle. Miabel didn’t get a gift and she thought that would be the downfall of the happy community/life they built from trama. She thought the candle was his incarceration/omen for peace over the community. They were forced to leave their homes and was given a safe haven to grow the community for 3 generations.
----Columbia history shows this was the thousand day war. Where ppl/families/millions were killed and forced from their homes all in the name of power and control. Imagine what she Witness--
She didn’t want to loose it the magic she was gifted after ALL THE LOSS she experienced. She pushed/strived to make a better/stronger generation for her ppl. Yes she went about the wrong way, but you don’t know your wrong UNTIL YOU GET CALLED OUT. Mirabel called her out and she revalued her actions and changed. She Showed more love and appreciation and the community followed suit and came to help them at the end because they know Abuela/Miragels have their back when it comes to community. Abuela has her faults but her ideals were misguided and she was brought back on path

I think the dude who described Bruno as 7ft frame rats on his back, actually seen Bruno once in the middle of the night when Bruno was sneaking out to get food, and he had his rats with him. Kid was little seen Bruno in the middle of the night got scared Bruno called his name to reassure him he wasn't a monster and instead he passed out from fear so bruno put him back in bed and snuck back out.

I don't know if this was any kind of symbolism of them trying to live up to abuela's standards but abuela had triplets and the guy never got married to have kids but each of her girls had three kids also one of them had three girls and the other one had two boys and a girl so nobody did it exactly like their mom did cuz you know she had triplets two girls and a boy but I found it kind of interesting that it seems to run in this family having three kids

Bruno is weird but he's not a bad guy his weirdness is basically caused by the trauma of having this ability to tell the future and then being blamed for causing the bad things he sees so he's very superstitious and super lonely so he's got all these little characters of himself that he has with the Spackle guy in the whatever and he does this little telenovelas in the walls with his rats he's a good person but the fact that he was shamed for his talent and forced to leave but not leave he's just so isolated it's made him go crazy but he really does love his family and he's in no way a threat
