I am damn near positive those large seals are symmetrical. The bore in the caliper for the primary seal (not dust seal) has a slight taper cut at the end of it that I believe serves that function. I had my cookie sheet out this weekend doing the same nasty thing.

I always used compressed air to pop the pistons out. That being said it's generally on older bikes where the pistons are stuck
every time i tried id end up popping one piston and the other is stuck. or sending one to the moon.
and 6 piston busa calipers were... interesting
