The Secret for Caliper Piston Dust Seal Installation

- Just a quick tip video on how to install dust seal boots on your brake caliper. I struggled to find a video how to do this and found an easy way to do it so I’m sharing it with you. Nobody seemed to have any good information on this. The caliper is from a VW MK2 Polo and I’m refurbishing the brakes, but this will be the same on a lot of different car makes and models.

This is the first video I found that shows how to get the piston seal back on after removing it. I was struggling until I found this. Thanks for posting!
Unbelievable! I restored my first car 35 years ago, have saved countless callipers (usually stiff pistons due to rusted dust boot channel rust).
Anyway, always struggled with the boots as had put boot in calliper first. Kept thinking I must be missing something, found this vid, tried it, works like an absolute charm.
Thank you, thank you!
This is the best video that illustrates the proper method. It is counter-intuitive, as I was trying to install the dust shield into the caliper first. Thanks very much!!!
I puzzled this out myself a few years back after struggling for sometime. However, many thanks for posting.👍
Thanks for the upload! Accidentally popped mine out while doing brakes and rotors 😅 tried to force it with a flat head and the piston all the way down.. very helpful!
Did mine today, and was easy thanks to your video.
I also got the repair kit from Big Red, excellent company to deal with, and quality kit.
Thank you 👍
Watching from France..Very good video and explanation .One of the best I have ever seen. MERCI MONSIEUR..THANKS SIR..
Well if anyone needs to do that job this video will be a great help for them. As always very easy to follow.
Thanks Neil, I tried to do it different before and failed, so I thought I’d share the way I found worked 🙂👍
So perfect ! Thank you very much for making the video, a big help ! 😀😀😀
Wish I’ve seen this before I did mine this morning, I ripped both of the new dust seals ended up reusing the old ones and good thing they still work and no leaks.
Hahah I know the feeling, I did a valve cover + spark plug tube seals replacement on a 2002 Honda CRV and nobody has any info / videos about how to put the plug tube seals around the metal tubes, so I ripped them all trying to put em on. Turns out you have to carefully push all the seals around the metal tubes individually instead of just pushing the entire valve cover on at once. (yes I used a lot of engine oil to lubricate them both times)
Me to
It’s an absolute ball ache of thing to do especially when attached on the car still. It’s infuriating to get the seal to sit on the caliper. I really need to get the caliper off the car in the future. Great video.
Thanks for the video I was replacing my piston brake seals set today I had no idea how to push new dust seal inside even with different methods.. luckily I was found your video my job done less than 5 minutes
Brilliant I’m pleased my video helped you 🙂👍
I didn't have a smart phone when I did the job. . . Shows how useful TH-cam can be.😃👍
Thanks for making this video !
Love it, nice work luke😊👍
Thanks 🙂👍
Fantastic video - thank you!

Your welcome I’m pleased the video helped you 🙂👍
Crystal clear, thanks mate!
Thanks sir. Really helped.
Thanks for the video ❤
Brilliant. Thank you!!
Easy-peasy! Nice technique!👍🏻
Hi Bill yes when I worked it out it’s so so easy 🙂👍
It can be easy. I had one on the same caliper that was easy and one that was an hour of frustration. Hose clamped the boot lightly to the piston and that worked.
Thanks nice tutorial🤙🏻
Wait, a lot interesting video but I cannot understand a thing, is the white lube you putting on making damage whit the brake fluid? Some guy advice to just use brake fluid instead of grease… I don’t know what is better to use as lube?
I use this method but, when trying to get the dust boot to get in it's groove and the boot continues to slip off the piston I LIGHTLY hose clamp the boot to the piston so that it doesn't slip off. Operative word, Lightly, as you don't want to puncture the boot. After an hour of struggle, this is the only thing that worked.
You can alternatively use electrical tape around the piston to hold it.
Good one sir I'd a never figured that out 👍
It took me a while to work out the best way, I got there in the end 🙂👍
Thank u sir , god bless u❤
THAT... IS... JUST... MAGICAL !!!!!!! :)
Thanks for this video but I managed to break 2 rubber rings the one that goes in, and now, the third time it leaks breaking fluid besides the dust rubbers...
Help full
Wish I had watch this video earlier before I ripped my new dust boot
Great video but checking ..
What to look out for to make sure , don't put the dust seal on upside down ...
What type of grease are you using to avoid the contamination of brake fluid
The grease came with the kit 🙂👍
Silicone grease
Was that not a silicone grease for the outer boot and not for the piston, normally red grease is supplied for piston or use clean brake fluid.
Hi they is what came in the kit, I double checked with the supplier and they said it was all correct 🙂👍
The grease is pushed up into the boot anyway by the new seal.
What type of grease are you using
Silicone grease
Yes, correct.
Now I know 😅
