This is one of the best breakdowns I've seen on this car (and I've watched almost every review on TH-cam). Everyone else parrots the same comments, but you went into real detail. Keep it up!
Thanks for taking the time to comment. This channel is focused on the Cayman, every Cayman… so the review was from the standpoint of a Cayman enthusiast and owner. Glad you liked it… I don’t get the huge view counts the other channels get, but I’m not doing this for the views… it’s a passion and a hobby and even if a few people like the content I’m happy 😁
First review I have watched where you actually capture the intake sound and noise. Everyone else talks about it, but they all just have 7-9k rpm sound bites in their videos. Well done
Thanks for taking the time to comment. The GT4 RS is a mobile orchestra… so many sounds on offer and so much more I would have liked to cover if I had the time to place microphones in other locations. It’s way more than the 9,000 rpm red line.
Porsche GB clearly recognise your passion for the model Max, a passion that I’ve no doubt is both motivating and genuine. Long may it continue. Cheers, Kevin.
Well done Max....I agree the GT4 RS is probably the best sports car ever for any type of practical car ownership. Yes, we have the extreme hyper cars in existence, but for most people, this car is everything one could ever want on 4 wheels. Even in direct comparison to some of the hyper cars, I cannot imagine that any performance gain of the pure exotics would practically matter to anyone.
This is such an awesome video. I received an allocation for a GT4 RS with no markup, which is amazing here in the USA. I am trading in my GTS 4.0, which I love dearly. I have a Macan for a daily, and this will be my fun weekend car and track car. But I do live in an urban area and like running around town in my GTS occasionally. Your review of the compliance of the ride is reassuring. Great video!
WOW!! You got a GT4RS without a dealer markup in the USA? JUMP ON IT if you can afford it without too many consequences financially. I know I would. Depends on your exact use case, and I’m pleased you haven’t mentioned so far you will be taking the car on track. It is an awesome car, though some hard core track people say the front-end steering and suspension cannot handle the power as well as a GT3. This doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I can proudly say I never come near to using 80% of the handling potential of the car. When I made this video the GT4RS impressed me on a more emotional level and I love the engineering that’s gone into that car, and the engine. The only downside you should be aware of depending on how good your hearing is, if you’re going on a 1,000 mile motorway trip the noise inside the cabin from the engine can get a bit much. This is not from personal experience but from multiple actual owners. That is the only downside to openly be aware of. Other than that, make sure you specify the front axle lift, and damn good times are in store for you ahead.
@@MAXREVS Thanks for the reply! I will be taking this to the track, for sure. I like track driving, but it is for my enjoyment, and I do not compete with anyone other than myself. I will probably get in around 6-8 track days per year, do some autoX, and then use this car to tear up the backroads. My one small concern is that I optioned PCCBm, which is supposed to be awesome. Some say the rotors wear quickly on the track, but others say they are pretty durable and a lot of people are basing their views off of old PCCB data. And I found that if/when they need to be swapped out, I can go to the Surface Transform option, which is about half the cost and should last forever. I plan on keeping this car until I can't get in and out of it anymore. Appreciate your awesome review!
Great comparison. FYI, noticed your suction cup camera mount. If you want to capture the best footage angle I use the RoadSpy RS1 on my Cayman. Way way better than those suction cups.
This was fantastic! Glad you got your hands on it. I enjoyed this very much 🙏🏻 looking forward to 4rs in the garage hopefully in a few months if production doesnt go more sideways (famous last words).
Wow, you have an order?! 🤯 Good times ahead, no matter how long you have to wait. Shortages are affecting everyone… I’ve been waiting on parts for my GT4. This is affecting the whole industry.
Amazing review Max! You have captured the sound so clearly and what a drive! Porsche keep surprising with such great cars. It looks like you could have done with a colour cordinated sports drink. Antony
Max I enjoy your channel and your enthusiasm for the brand. I had a Cayman S which was fun and then a GT3RS (997) which made the Cayman feel like driving a marshmallow. I then bought a 981 GT4 which I have had for 7 years and it has been utterly brilliant, but it lacks real punch. Thus I am looking forward to an Arctic Grey GT4RS which is on a ship coming to my country. Interested to hear your comments about the exhaust and I agree. Interested what you say about the PDK, because even as a manual fan I think I will agree that the shifts will be so good (the PDK comes from the GT3RS 991). You have done a great job capturing the interior sound accurately. Great review.
The GT4 RS is best among the Caymans and better than most 911s out there, this is right at the door steps of the GT3 with a 10 bhp deficit but compensates with the midship engine and perhaps a slight lighter weight. What a cracking engine…..a sports car most provoke emotions and the GT4 sums it up with precision. Thanks Max
Immensely jealous of you getting to drive one, I haven't even seen one in the flesh yet. Good watch too but I think you could have rewarded yourself with just a little A/C, the fans would have been drowned out by the induction noise 😅
LOL!! From past experiences my mics always have picked up the AC fans even on low speed. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I took no chances. Although the result was great audio the visuals of me in a closed cabin when it was 30 degrees C outside could have been better😅
Are those seats those new fancy-pants 3D printed seat inserts? If so, what were your impressions of them? Great video Max, brilliant that Porsche themselves have recognised your channel and the passionate content that you create on all things exclusively Cayman.
Hi Julian. About those seat inserts. They were in the front trunk. I had to remove them so I could fit my crate of video and audio equipment. It never occurred to me to use them to be honest. If I ever get a next time😜
I can't wait until I get my fully spec GT4 RS in gorgeous Gentian Blue in January/February next year! It will be a good year at all the racetracks in Sweden next year ;)
Thank you, Max! Great video! It’s good to know that you could daily it on UK roads. I was worried the suspension was going to be too harsh, especially after trying out the new front suspension on the 992 GT3. Love that GT3 engine-even more so in the Cayman platform!😍. How were your ears after the drive?!
😁 My ears are just fine👍🏼 I’ve heard some people say you would not want to drive long distances in the GT4 RS. The noise would kill you. I couldn’t disagree more. It’s all about how you use your right foot. With moderate throttle inputs there are no intense decibel levels which could fatigue you, however the moment you stab the throttle the Jekyll and Hyde characteristics of this car show. One moment a daily cruiser the next moment a beast.
Hi max great content on the car. I would like to ask on suspension most reviews are saying the car is too stiff for road riding then watching your review says no problem as daily or its very much livable i wonder what is the problem? 2nd is the car smooth on slow speeds like regular pace? I mean the gearing on throttle not jerky or some sort that will not be ok with normal pace? 1 more thing if placed in regular automatic mode do we need to rev high in order to change gear or it can work like normal auto car?
This is a very subjective answer, based on the specific roads the test drive is done on. Then there is also the country of the review, e.g. France / Germany / Europe tends to have far better maintained road surfaces than the UK. UK road surfaces at the moment are shocking without the funding to fix them. So depending on where the review was done, this could explain mixed reviews. Thankfully for my review it was summer and the roads were adequate during my test drive. Not perfect, not shocking, just average UK road surfaces. Since the review after the winter of 2022 the roads in the UK now are generally shocking, and not being maintained / fixed. You don’t want to buy any performance car, throw it into corners and expect to find body roll. There is a reason the suspension is stiff and firm. If someone wants a more comfortable ride buy a GTS. My best advice for a 718 GT4 RS owner?! Replace the Cup2s with PS4S for UK roads and that would be excellent. I recently switched from Cup2s to PS4S on my 981 GT4 and it has really taken off the harshness which I could get on some uneven road surfaces in the UK. Gearbox is fine, I wouldn’t worry about it, it’s not new for the GT4RS. I guess there are always some people who find something to criticise. Nothing in life is perfect, and if you think the 718 GT4 RS (the best Cayman on this planet) is letting the side down in some areas… well, I just don’t know what to say. I know you are not the one finding fault in the car… it’s other professional TH-camrs who have to find some angle on their reviews to make them stand-out. Anyhow we are all entitled to our opinions… so if someone says the suspension is too hard, so be it. It’s a performance sports after all, if they made it super compliant it would bounce in the corners. Porsche cannot build their cars to take into account every road surface in every country.
@@MAXREVS wow thank you for the prompt reply. I live in the philippines a lot of the roads here has no maintenance as well. Was asking the questions since i placed a dep on the 4rs getting it in a month time i just wanted to make sure i wont regret it. We use it for weekends canyon riding. Im currently in an m2c but some of my friends got 991.2 gt3 rs. I kinda prefer the cayman size on our roads and according to them gt3rs is ok for the roads we do so there it is… thank you very much for the informations
Greatly appreciate this video. Great to get your take that the ride is not too rough as Doug Demuro reported. I trusat you as a Caynan owner and expert. So the GT4RS you drove had the aluminum wheels with PCCB. Do you think the steering feel or turn in feel or acceleration will feel any better by also having the magnesium wheels (10 kg savings overall)?
Hi there. I will obviously have to give you my best efforts guess on the answer… not having driven the car with magnesium wheels. Honestly, for road usage, and the time I had with the car, I don’t think I would be capable of noticing any difference between the standard and magnesium wheels. Maybe if I was on track, with sharp bends, constantly turning one way and the other, you could detect a difference. I suspect it would have to be with very large steering inputs (i.e. sharp corners) to pick up on the difference. As the steering is now electrically assisted and no longer hydraulic like in the 987s, I am guessing the magnesium wheels would probably have a more noticeable impact on a car with hydraulic steering? Furthermore I didn’t really get to use the car to pick up on the GT4 RS front suspension setup versus a regular GT4. One line summary of the GT4 RS… like going to a live concert in your favourite stadium, your favourite artist, the best live audio sound system… versus listening to compressed MP3 audio on $10 in ear headphones! In my case, Kraftwerk performing Live in the Royal Albert Hall in London!!
@@MAXREVS Thank you very much for your detailed reply. I had not thought of the electric steering vs hydraulic steering feeling as it pertains to aluminum vs magnesium wheels. Right now I have my GT4RS ordered with PCCB with base aluminum wheels and will probably stick with that spec.
Congrats on the GT4 RS order. There must be at least 3-4 people in the comments threads with a GT4 RS on order. It would be great to gather everyone’s initial feedback and bounce it off each other when the cars arrive!
I ❤️ the PDK GT4 RS. Even if it was available in manual I would opt for PDK. My explanation… the GT4 RS is so eventful I want to experience the whole rev range with my right foot. I want to be able to hit the red line with a subsequent gear change in a seamless manner. With a manual gearbox I challenge anyone to hit the red line and then change up a gear as quickly and smoothly as a PDK. I want to play the engine and exhaust like a violin. The paddles are my tools for interacting with the instrument. Either of the standard GT4s are so quiet in comparison to the RS, you could argue the manual is the better choice to connect with the car. With the RS my connection is to the audio track of the car and not the transmission of the car. Given the beautiful audio PDK allows me to exploit it best. Hope this answers your question!
Another great video Max. I have my fingers crossed as on the list but feels like it could be a very long wait! One question, sound is epic, but do you think it is too much for longer journeys / road trips? Other reviews have commented such and was curious for your thoughts?
