One "quirk" of the PDK: if you're cruising around and want to accelerate quickly, floor it and then press a little harder. There is a notch after what you think would be the bottom of the pedal. It instantly drops you into the lowest gear you can be in. Seems like not a lot of people know this.

I never really got into Doug Demuro, but have dabbled. I'm officially a fan. This guy knows what he's talking about about. Only a true gearhead/enthusiast would come to the same conclusion.

Doug!!! Please bring the old format for the Doug's score! It makes it interesting to hear your perspective on the criteria. And it keeps the anticipation to see where you'd list it and how many points it'll get rather than getting the list straight away! 😊
According to Doug on Twitter: "Adds 1 minute to each video that I can't spend on quirks/features, which is what people want to see. Plus tons of me saying "Like all cars in this class, it gets a 5 out of 10 for practicality." Doesn't add much, but current format lets me give a good, concise, overall summary."
@@bonzobonanza That sucks. I've only started losing interest and leave the video at the end after this format. He used to do it for "More Doug Demuro" and it's understandable cause he'd review some "side" cars. But it's annoying to see it here on some major vehicles.
I'm not a car engineer myself, but as I hear almost every trained car guy say: Reducing rotational mass is one of the most effective ways to make a car drive better/safer/quicker . That's why all these "weight-reduced" moving parts are so much more expensive in return for the net weight they save. It's kinde the same with weight reduced cam shafts (other materials). They are on the one hand more sturdy to withstand more power but they are sometimes even lighter to increase power-output themselfs. 12:52 Magnesium wheels

Having lived with a Cayman S for many years, I think even this track focused one should get a bump in practicality. The front and rear trunks make this thing great for daily driving and can handle some real luggage if you need to. Question for Doug, what is the line between sports car and super car. what car in your opinion is the entry point to supercardom?
Tough one, but IMO this isn't a supercar -- ultimately it's based on a Cayman. I think a supercar probably has to be purpose-built at least (same reason the Z06 isn't one).
@@DougDeMuro do you consider the 911 Turbo S, NSX or R8 a supercar? I’ve heard many journalists/TH-camrs all deny them supercar status, interested in your opinion.
Doug I loved your enthusiasm during this video! You can tell you're not just an automotive journalist but one who actually appreciates such an awesome vehicle. I have a base Cayman and could only imagine myself reacting the same way as you if I had the opportunity to drive this car. Keep up the great content!
Did everyone notice Doug's eyes at the 28:30 min mark? It was right after the Charger pulls up behind him he quickly glances down to the speedometer. And then did the side eye as it passed him. Hahaha! If I had a dollar everytime I've done that.... Awesome video, Doug
Good review as always. The GT4 RS is a very nice car, but I am not sure I am feeling the potential $250+k price tag for this car would be considered a good value. Particularly when you have several cars with similar or better performance characteristics (ie., GTR, ZO6) with less expensive price tags. I get the current market and its associated markups, but even still $250K for a Cayman, you'd lose money in that investment. Those who would buy this car over $200k, are lovers of Porsche more than lovers of performance.
The GT4 cayman is the best "value" performance porsche at ~110-120k after options. It can go between track and street with no worries, you could daily drive it I guess, if you don't have a family. You could option it out for a really comfy interior, or go bare bones and make it a track monster. If you're looking at a car as an investment you're removing joy from the equation. Get on some wait lists, take factory/dealer reps out to crazy parties and buy and sell Lambos and Ferraris, I guess. This car is a step above the GT4 for someone who wants a dedicated track car and for whom the increase in price has no meaning.
The magnesium wheels are expensive for many reasons but the logistics when manufacturing them are pretty insane. The magnesium billets are cast in the UK, they are forged and finish machined in Japan, then they are coated in Germany. That's a lot of travel. The magnesium roofs, which is available on the 911 GT3 RS and other RS models, is cast and rolled in South Korea (was finish rolled in the US at one point), formed and coated in Canada and then shipped to Germany. Just some insight on these magnesium supply chains.
I own a manual 2014 981 Cayman S, and every time I drive it, it amazes me. I can only imagine what the GT4RS feels like. What Doug states is true. I used to own two different 911's before my Cayman, and the Cayman is a far superior driving experience. I don't miss my 911's.
Vs the standard GT4, it Gained 2 points on acceleration and cool factor but lost a point on fun factor, qualify and comfort. Beating the GT4 by 1 point in total score but price tag doubled. Doug just destroyed the new GT4RS 😂
Not really. At those price and dougscore levels, every additional point costs a lot more. In general, for $100k you can get anything you want. Every dollar you spend above has diminishing return. Even worse above 400k, where limited supercars and hypercars are. With those, you are paying for the privilege to show off the fact that you paid more. You don’t get objective advantage for your additional dollars spent there.
If you think about it, the closer you get to a race car - think series like GT cars from Porsche, GT-R cars from Mercedes - you inevitably lose most of the car's everyday functionality. The comfort goes down, the quality of materials is lower to save weight, but what you gain is a car that drives significantly better, accelerates more agressively. It's a trade-off. As Doug said, this car is for the people who want track-focused car 95% of the time. Everyone else is much better off aiming for a lower-tier Cayman, which is slower, but has all the quality of life equipment and characteristics.
PPF would have to be mandatory on those fenders and other areas rocks get slung from the front tires. Hanging my left arm out of the window of my RX-7 leaves my arm stinging from tiny rocks, I can't imagine how mangled someone's arm would look hanging out of the window of one of these 😅
As much as a manual would be fun and add a new driving dimension, I feel that the PDK sound character is more befitting of that high revving 4.0. The manual doesn't have that "punchiness" that is like a drum beat to a perfect song. You lose that with the manual. The PDK is a lot more similar to the gearbox found in the GT4 race car, and to have that in your garage to use when and where you feel like, is a privilege.
Most people also don't know how to shift gears properly, so I agree with you. On the other hand, the experience of driving a manual is unrivaled. The perfect way would be for Porsche to release both, but let's be honest, then the PDK wouldn't sell. Enthusiasts are obsessed with manuals, even if just for the bragging rights.
I patiently waited through all the exterior quirks and features just to find out my worst nightmare. Kinda stopped paying attention once I found out it was auto. I get the PDK is fast. I get it’s fastER than a human. But I honestly don’t care. Sports cars should have manual transmissions available.
I've extensively driven the 718 GT4 in manual, 718 Cayman GTS in manual, and the previous 981 Cayman GTS in PDK. Have to say I've missed the PDK a bit. Even if it isn't a true three pedal enthusiast transmission, it is very fun to drive. We have the GT4 RS on order and I'm sure the PDK will be just as fun as a manual.
@@TheGardenMG same for me with Miata. I don’t get the hype for these 4 cylinder cars that have less then 200hp. I do get the hype with muscle cars like Mustang because they have V8 engines for less then $40k new or like less then $20k on the used
Doug giving a review of the GT4 RS while also giving tips on how to maintain the value by selecting bucket seats is the best advice yet! (assuming everyone is planning on buying one) 😅

Throw a 5 second ad before the Doug score to make it make sense lol. The people who care will stay, the ones that never cared about the score will be gone by then anyways. Cheers man!
Deserves more than a 2 for Practicality, with the two cargo areas. PS: You've always hated on 914s. The 914 was the ancestor that led directly to this. You should really drive one.
This ain’t a cayenne bro. It doesn’t even have back seats. Yeah 2 car areas don’t matter because who’s gonna daily a race car for the street? Nobody it’s a weekend car
Part of being a Porsche fanboy like all journalists are is being a snob towards the "Volkswagen" cars like the 914 and the 924. Nevermind how the 914/6 was this, it just didn't resemble a smaller 911.
Points for you Doug, for being the only reviewer, out of dozens on this car, to call BS with regard to Porsche's claim that the reduced HP compared to the GT3 is due to "increased backpressure from a longer exhaust".
This beast of a car has literally double the horsepower of my humble little '08 base Cayman lol. What a car though, hope I can get my hands on one eventually. I agree with Doug though, no manual trans option for this car is a cardinal sin!
Seeing Doug drive that car in the neighborhood where I grew up brings back some big time nostalgia. Definitely driven wayyyy too fast on that same exact road. Scripps Ranch represent!
Having had my 2022 PDK GT4 for 4 mths now... Regarding the suspension harshness, at least on the GT4 (probably the GT4 RS as well), the main issue I feel isn't harshness, it's the damping. I found my GT4 to be quite unstable at high speed on CA crappy/broken pavement roads. The car moves around waaay too much. The compression is dialed too high and the rebound is under damped. I also found the front-end didn't "talk" well with what the rear-end was doing when the suspension is handling some of the larger bumps. The factory PASM suspension on the GT4 and probably RS are designed for smooth roads and tracks, not US crappy/broken pavement roads. I added MCS 2-way remote dampers to mine and it helped A LOT to make it much more stable at speed when the roads were less than perfect and made the front-end and rear-end a lot more cohesive with each other.
The former Top gear host tested the 911 Dakar and said he regretted baying the 911 GT something because the Dakar was MUCH more fun to drive with it soft high ride height and low grip gravel tires on tarmac. Cars that make good lap times on track is rarely fun cars to drive on normal roads... Most fun car to drive I ever had was a Opel Ascona B 1,9SR from 1976 with 90hp and rear wheel drive :) I bought in 2001 for 550$. Now a car like that cost 20.000 to 40.000 $ so I am instead of getting a new one like that getting a used Porsche Cayman as those now cost the same...
Although a few Porsche models get rated higher in the DougScore, this is the one I'd have -- hands down. For me, the best modern Porsche.

Went back in Monday and asked about taking the Boxster S out, Wow, I was impressed. Made the deal and drove it off the lot. The best secret, don’t tell anyone else.
Always wanted the cayman chassis with a gt3 engine , what a car
Finally, a video where Doug actually goes through some gears haha
I love the classic Porsche design sooooo much and this is definitely the most beautiful to date. I’d say this is peak Porsche

Doug in 2 years: "THIS is my new GT4 RS!"
A modern Cayman R would actually be an instant classic. Manual, 4.0, no/smaller wing, magnesium wheels, in some PTS colors👀
718 gts 4.0
It would also be around four hundred thousand USD after dealer markup, and thats being conservative. Its the type of thing Porsche said they want to avoid.

One "quirk" of the PDK: if you're cruising around and want to accelerate quickly, floor it and then press a little harder. There is a notch after what you think would be the bottom of the pedal. It instantly drops you into the lowest gear you can be in. Seems like not a lot of people know this.
That's some amazing creative engineering. Hahaha that's so cool it's exciting

Doug!!! Please bring the old format for the Doug's score! It makes it interesting to hear your perspective on the criteria. And it keeps the anticipation to see where you'd list it and how many points it'll get rather than getting the list straight away! 😊
I came here to post this exact thing.
According to Doug on Twitter:
"Adds 1 minute to each video that I can't spend on quirks/features, which is what people want to see.
I am guessing that when Doug says “he has friends that want to buy this car” he means “he wants to buy this car”.
Every time a performance car of this caliber is released, I love hearing how even the rear brakes are larger than my miata's wheels. Incredible
What year Miata you got?
One day, one day i will buy myself a Porsche🙏🏼
I'm not a car engineer myself, but as I hear almost every trained car guy say: Reducing rotational mass is one of the most effective ways to make a car drive better/safer/quicker . That's why all these "weight-reduced" moving parts are so much more expensive in return for the net weight they save.
It's kinde the same with weight reduced cam shafts (other materials). They are on the one hand more sturdy to withstand more power but they are sometimes even lighter to increase power-output themselfs. 12:52 Magnesium wheels
Since 2 years Doug's like "screw Dougcember, i'm going to drop the bombs all over the year".
I mean Koenigsegg Regera, Bugatti EB110, Ferrari SF90, Ferrari Monza, that black cubic vehicle thing, McLaren Elva (coming up soon) and some others. Need i say more? It's only logical to do so if he wants to survive in this car review industry.
He became like a kid that couldn't wait to tell you what cars it has seen 😀
Having lived with a Cayman S for many years, I think even this track focused one should get a bump in practicality. The front and rear trunks make this thing great for daily driving and can handle some real luggage if you need to.
Question for Doug, what is the line between sports car and super car. what car in your opinion is the entry point to supercardom?
I think he commented on it before, but a "cheep" version of the car kills it from making the list.
All it needs is a titanium tow hitch.
Tough one, but IMO this isn't a supercar -- ultimately it's based on a Cayman. I think a supercar probably has to be purpose-built at least (same reason the Z06 isn't one).
@@DougDeMuro here is a fun fact for you when I was 9 years old I love love loved Porsches Porsche was my favorite car of all time

Yes, relieving wheel arch air pressure is extremely important to performance, Doug. That's why almost all modern race cars have fender vents like that
The weissach package is a must for the sound that the carbon airbox creates which sounds amazing inside.
I don’t know why but this is maybe my favorite Doug video. Such a cool car, great video

Doug, your car reviews are hands down the best 👍 Been watching for years, and as an absolute car enthusiast really like you showing real details
The joy in you face while driving and the sound of that engine is just what my day needed!
And exactly why is that?
@@comeberza to be cool I guess
@@juzoli 1000-1500hp would like a word with you
If you think about it, the closer you get to a race car - think series like GT cars from Porsche, GT-R cars from Mercedes - you inevitably lose most of the car's everyday functionality.
GT4 RS is for people who are embarrassed driving a Cayman and need it to be "cooler" than a 911
@@T4xEvader Explain how would you use that 1500HP.
PPF would have to be mandatory on those fenders and other areas rocks get slung from the front tires. Hanging my left arm out of the window of my RX-7 leaves my arm stinging from tiny rocks, I can't imagine how mangled someone's arm would look hanging out of the window of one of these 😅
From the drivers perspective, that really might be one of the best sounding cars ever, the noise inside the cabin is incredible
I’ve been in a normal gt4 and the sound in the cabin was insane can’t imagine what this sounds like
At 10:05 you can see a crack on the body panel to the left of the wheel well and at 10:10 you can see a Bee landing on the spoiler 😂
Of all the recent reviews of this car, all in plain-jane silver, only Doug got a yellow one 💛, because he's Doug Demuro. 😁👌
Just say you can't shift fast
I patiently waited through all the exterior quirks and features just to find out my worst nightmare. Kinda stopped paying attention once I found out it was auto. I get the PDK is fast. I get it’s fastER than a human. But I honestly don’t care. Sports cars should have manual transmissions available.
@@davidseo677 I'd like to see who could shift faster then a PDK.

Fun factor is a 10 for the regular GT4 & a 9 for the GT4RS 🤣
Gt4 is manual
Because the GT4 he reviewed had the manual transmission. GT4 RS is PDK only, like all RS models starting with the 991 911 models.
Nice catch. MT is a big factor.
I was giggling like a madman during the drive. No Doug, let's NOT talk about the car over that glorious induction music.
