Never knew this layout was even a thing. I have heard of 5 cyclinder engines, but they are mainly inline and diesel. Also 5 cyclinder engines have a very nice tone to them
Thank you for being my only nom bot comment in the first 30min
I5 petrol engines were used a lot by volvo and ford
Yea had on of those 5 cylnder volvos. 2nt worst suv i ever had needed constant maintenance and even when running 100% perfect it still had hella vibration
@@iniehawk4472damn, Audi invented the i5, and are the last one to use an i5 and they don't deserve a mention?
i-5 is also the smallest engine with power stroke overlap, which can have advantages.
Owned a rotary, owned a boxer, now i need an offline 5 😂
"Offline 5" That's a good name!

Hey was thinking about buying a mazda rx8. I know i may need to rebuild engine but i always wanted to own one. Have you had alot of issues with it beside normal wear and tear?
@@StarDark4 how did you know i had an rx8 lol. Really depends on what shape the car is in when you buy it and what you plan on what you do with it. Daily driving should not be an issue, but expect leaks, its almost unavoidable. Have a drip pan with you if you park it for a while. Number one issue of course are the apex seals, and theres plenty of resources online for you to see before you make a decision. Otherwise expect horrible mileage, always smelling burnt gas/oil, dumping gas on shifts, buut a big smile on your face when you rev it out to 9k like you are supposed to, and it sounds so unique people will turn heads haha. Some people use rotary premix on every gas fill, still not sure if thats needed, but i did for peace of mind. And i really dont advise tracking it or prolonged heavy driving unless you are very mechanically adept.
@mechwarrior13 appreciate the detailed advice. 👍
My dad had a VR5 Jetta, eventually he got rid of it because of a seal that no one knew about, he took it to a local shop and they put a normal O ring on it but warned him to basically only drive the car to VW to get it properly sorted, the shop didnt even charge him.
A couple kilometres later and a first party VW South Africa dealer had the car plugged in and had no idea what seal was needed, what the part number was or even where the seal was located before my dad pointed at where the other shop replaced it.
They go back to search again and NO ONE can find this seal, it was a high temp seal of a specific dimension that apparently was not on any of the schematics VW SA had.
So they call up VW Germany and they break out the full schematics and to fly in this small O ring would cost enough to replace a tyre on the car, for just this tiny O ring.
A couple weeks later dad sold the car to some other dude through the shop that originally replaced the O ring, so at least they got some commission for their kindness.
and that, ladies and gentleman, is why i'll never go euro. FREAKING NIGHTMARE
Your story was fucking hilarious, i was laughing so hard at "so they call up VW Germany" i had a coughing fit. Thanks man.
Nice to them tbf
@@MrLogistician Hilarious now but it scared my dad away from anything even a little performance orientated and his new favourite statistic is the fuel economy rating. He used the money from the 2.3l VR5 Jetta to buy a Polo with a 1.6l in it.
To be fair to the Polo the Jetta was about 10 years old when it started breaking while the Polo is now 14 and it's had 1 issue so far, one tiny bit of plastic on the drivers side window control broke off. Oh and the 2 accidents but that's not the car's fault.
My mom is fortunately not ruled by the mighty fuel economy rating and bought a BMW 320D, which is faster than 95% of the cars you see every day in South Africa. And it was built at the local BMW plant so it was cheaper than what you would pay in the States or Europe.

@@RGV2300 the vr6 sound... 🥵
@@RGV2300v6 sound like sht, except bussos
@@8kmar which ones
VR5'S sound amazing and are a tuners dream. Also, "vibration" wasn't an issue in vw. They counter balanced the crank and exhaust which eliminated any vibration. They were higher horsepower than the 4 and higher torque than the v6. Not to mention the extended durability of the vr5 vs v6. So not trying to rain on your parade but this was fairly incorrect. Also, the vr5 wasn't so much ended due to bad sales as it was extremely popular, but vw found it cheaper to move to a vr6 as it didn't require a counter balance weighting to the extreme vibrations of the vr5. Adding the 6th cylinder to the vr design greatly increased power and ran smooth. Due to this, it over took the 5 as the common vr design
On a side note the Honda RC211V's V5 engine was an engineering marvel.

The v5 in motorcycles actually made sense because you could have more power than a 4 but also being shorter than it would with a 6
South African cops loved the Jetta V5 back in the day, so much so that if you drove a Jetta V5, most people would think you're an undercover cop
They sound so good tho, even better then i5's. Shame they don't make them anymore
nah, inline fives sound better
They already had the tooling and production lines for a V10 with the staggered bores, so decided that there would be minimal developmental cost in making a V5 out of a single bank of the V10 then market it as being warmer than the non turbo 4 cylinder option but cheaper than the 4cylinder Turbo or V6 option. Quite clever really.

The only reason I'd get one is cuz i would love to roam round sounding like some V10 Lambo in a daily lol
inline 5 engines also produce v10 sounds, so no need for a v configuration
Audi RS3
Even VW's 3 Cyl engines sound kind of cool at "high" revs.
@@basedcaterpillar Correct, an Inline 5 has a more accurate, "Baby V10" sound due to sharing half it's firing order. A VR5 due to it's offset cylinder does more of a staggered growl.
@@wiscopyrovw 2.5 inline 5 is better for daily
Main reason: they sound beautiful
I prefer i5 and V6 over any VR5 or VR6...
Main reason they were manufactured was space
the VR sounds is all that VW had going for them in my eyes.. without that theyre just another hatchback.
Slap two together and you have a W10. More balanced, more power, and would prolly sound pretty cool.
i mean they kinda made a w8 and it sounds kinda scary when it accelerates hard
Thanks for sharing this!
I drive a Passat VR5 myself, which my parents bought new in ‘99. Quite rare actually, as it’s manual, sedan (no wagon) and painted dark green - a combination I am still yet to find anywhere else! It’s doing very well with only minor issues so far and I’m regularly doing 120+ mph on the Autobahn 😁
Another fun fact is that they changed the name from VR5 to V5 shortly after my car was built because of copyright complaints by Mitsubishi with their “VR4” model name. So on my engine cover it says V5, but there’s a VR5 badge on the trunk.
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

Audi Inline 5 is keeping the legendary five cylinder alive until this day credit goes to them.
Real V5 engine with more bank angle is suprisingly well balanced. I suggest everyone to watch "driving 4 answers" V5 video.
I'm not trying to bust your balls, but it's not really a surprise that it is well balanced. Any engine over a certain power rating HAS to be well balanced well enough to function. It really doesn't take much vibration to cause serious issues. So the fact that it exists as a commercial motor means that it is pretty well balanced.
My dad's Colorado has a 5-cylinder engine and it's surprisingly solid
Not in a V configuration though
Does it have so much problems?
The "VR" is the abbreviation for
"Verkürzter Reihenmotor"-"shortened in-line engine" in German. So it is actually an in-line engine in which the cylinders are not in a line but are offset from one another, but the engine still only has one cylinder head. That's why technically it's actually an in-line engine.
Does VR not stand for an engine that has similarities to a "V-Motor" and a "Reihen-Motor" (Inline-Engine). So its not V5, its not R5, its VR5.
Do you have a source? my source is german wikipedia about "VR-Motor".
I believe V stands for V and R stands for in-line, according to VW that is
VW also had plans to make a W10 by connecting 2 VR5s. Only a mockup block was made but it never made it past that stage.
Wtf no 😂 this engine only exists because of the w10
VW had the W10 engine in a BMW M5 actually to try the engine out. So it exits for real. Ferdinand Piech (their boss of the time) drove it as a daily.
@@AndrewTSqthe production m5 has a v10 if youre referring to that. VW never really did a collab with bmw
@@NakiriX1 no. The BMW they used was the older one with V,8. I guess they wanted to hide the engine from the competition, so they used the chassis from a M5 to test their engine. Google it and you can read more.

I drove a Golf V5 for a while. Had the fuel economy of a 6 cylinder and the performance of a 4 cylinder. Sounded cool though.
The best part was that the VR5 Golfs were actually slower than the I4 ones.
Still cooler in terms of Sound, but yeah it doesnt make much objective sense.
The 1.8T 20v is quicker, more fuel efficient and less expensive in maintenance so indeed it doesn't make sense.
My parents drove a stock 2002 Golf V5 for twenty years and every time I drove it the radio went off just to enjoy the engine symphony. My '01 A3 1.8T i4 was definitely quicker but the n/a 2.3 VR5 has a lot of potential to be a real beast. Funny thing is there both 20v engines 4x5v and 5x4v

You don’t have a VR5, it’s an Inline 5. The Volvo Modular is an I5, and it’s not really known to be vibrate-y; you should probably get that checked out.
@@initialyeet3951indeed, volvo specialist here, most common cause for vibrations with these engines is a worn out upper engine mount

honda's v5 was pretty balanced for the time as they took an unbalanced v4 and balanced it by adding another cylinder.
honda's reason was (for the time) that making a v5 turns out to be lighter than a v4. at the time when honda was racing, the rules had changed so that 4-stroke engines now have a CC cap at 990cc
and 2-stroke capped at 500cc, so it made sense for most of the manufacturers to go with a v4 4-stroke engine. (no cylinder cap for 4-stroke I think)
honda being the smartass that they are, realized a v5 was lighter because it occupied less cylinder volume than a v4 would. in theory that is.
but there were alot of problems that they discovered, but i wont talk about it here, but i do recommend watching D4A's video about it.

I had a great V5 Golf back in 2001. 3 door, Santa Monica OEM wheels. The V5 was smooth, great engine note and was a joy to drive. Heavy on fuel though. The V5 was a great company car. I have had many company cars over the years and that V5 is one that I bonded with. Only one that topped it was the Golf IV R32. My colleagues were all driving Audi A3s and I had my 3 door R32. Happy days!
Had a vr5 at my Volkswagen training course and one apprentice drew the short straw and was chosen to remove and rebuild the vr5 and spent the entire week trying to rebuild it. Never got the timing right and whenever he’d slap the head back on and dry cranked. The valves and pistons would kiss
Volkswagen also created a vr6 which is also an unbalanced 6 cylinder engine layout

I ran into one recently and it kinda blew my mind, had no idea these existed till a guy brought one in for a service, didn't notice any concerning vibrations though, seemed pretty well balanced.
Oldsmobile made a prototype V5, which got close to being in production because they had sent out the molds for the block and heads I believe, but the plug was pulled at the last minute.
My wife’s Beetle has that V5, she’s had the car since new from 2003. It runs like a clock and doesn’t burn a drop of oil. It also sounds amazing 😂

I had an 08' rabbit that I sadly parted with. But man, did it have such a nice little rumble.
They should’ve put 2 slightly larger pistons on the side that only had two pistons to balance it.
I had a golf 4 V5 in 2002, it was so rare and limited that, when i took it for service at some VW dealerships that had not seen it, they would dispute that it existed until they saw it, because externally it looked like a GTI. Some thought I installed a V5 engine in a golf 4 Gti. The nice thing was i never struggled for parts because there were a lot of Jetta 4 V5 using the same engine.
"Oh yeah, our vr6's kinda trash in the balance, LET'S MAKE IT WORSE!"
