everyone is comparing her to RIPLEY ....ripley earned her statues for being badass and she was in a prison planet where men haven't seen a woman in years and they almost tried to RAPE her i think that's why she shaved her head
You think its virtue signaling? They're naturally pathetic to the core and part of a cult that encourages adolscents with an identity crisis to cut off their tits and balls
and not welcoming. most of not ugly character is welcoming which they inherit the traits of beauty, relatable, attentive, and believable. Well for woke character they are suddenly pulling the word "I not different, right everyone?" even that character saying the most different thing.
I think people are more annoyed with the fact that they are incapable of creating female leads without giving them the most insufferable personalities imaginable. No not every lead has to be an angel but damn these are all just the same women in different fonts.
RIGHT! If they had showcased a clip of her being a likeable person, I don't think people would mind much anything else. If SHE is the draw, then it falls on her shoulders to make US want to buy the game.
@@Alteori maybe if they are not looking supervillain vibe with depress personality to begin with. I don't know but most lesbian In my belief in this era like to admire distorted man life in womans character. They it's cool and admirable. They just really show how really bad taste the really are to begin with so they choose girl believing that is not man it will change the problematic persona if woman is in their position. Example making Lara croft lesbian is their ideal deal that life is romantic roller coaster flirting each other of who is strong and sexy. Sorry think of that in some what to against but I think what makes character ugly is when they can't pop to the crowd. Which mean not pretty. Being ugly not being presentable. And being beautiful is presentable to eit'saudience. And sad to say the only people will say she is beautiful is someone with same fantasy of game makers they are.
I've always been a sucker for good animation and graphics, so the trailer wasn't all that offensive to me because I wanted to see the "movie" they were showing. But gameplay matters most, and if a woman with a shaved head is their best foot forward for the world, that's an awful sign. As a side note, I remember my English teacher talking to some girls in the early 2000s. They agreed that they wouldn't shave their head if offered $10k, while also noting that guys totally would. Whomever things girls would give up their beauty like that just doesn't understand women.
The blame is on the culprits: Anita Sarkeesian Zoe Quinn Brianna Wu Kim Belair Klaus Schwab Larry Fink Jack Thompson ZombiUniicorn Neil Druckmann Frosk Rebekah Valentine Mary Kenney David Bedard David Jaffe Alyssa Mercante Sam Winkler Sarah Bond Erika Ishii The list is endless Blame them. It's their fault.
as a female GAMER™, i don't wanna play this game on the basis of the way she looks, shallow? who cares. I dont play games to be reminded of real life. I'm no looker myself, but that's the thing, I don't play games to be reminded of myself, i want to be someone likeable and attractive in videogames, and I can't play games with someone so unattractive and smug
OMG YES! I admitted I am VERY shallow when it comes to my video games and anime, to a point. It still has to be enjoyable but like the love and deepspace game, it's an ok game but we all know why most of us downloaded it lol.
@@Alteori lmao the "modern" gaming industry need to look into Otome games like deepspace if they want to know what most women actually likes, but wahhh its too heteronormative for them
Im right there with you on this. I'm ugly, I'm disabled, and I'm poor, I do not want to play someone in a wheelchair, someone that I can't see actually doing the things I'm doing in the game. Like I'm not into playing as a tiny woman who then goes on to beat the $hit out of men 3 times her size all while she has the Temu Star-Lord look that she stole from that guardians of the galaxy game.
It's not even the fact that we need to have "hot" characters in games. We just don't want characters who are legitimately *ugly*; more so than the people you see in real life.
I literally deleted my female warlock character in Destiny, after going thru the entire game, and remade her as a male because I thought the warlock robes made her look fat. I'm that freaking shallow when it comes to games. So sue me. If I'm going to play tens of hours of a game, I want to actually LIKE what I'm looking at. It's also why I prefer to play as Male Shep instead of FemShep. I'd rather stare at his @$$ and shoulders than a woman's for 60+ hours.
The same people that will shame and destroy you for not accepting their preferences and gender identities, will scorn you for having any preference that isn't specifically them. It's not tolerant enough to tolerate someone, you're evil if you don't automatically validate them completely. In other words, this is what happens when a generation grows up without any concept of discipline or humility. "No" becomes the worst crime imaginable.
Yes! This! Like I know they aren't exactly "protagonists" but Nemesis from Resident Evil or Gollum from Lord of The Rings aren't by any metric attractive, but are still very memorable. It's not that making a character hot is a prerequisite to making a good character. Making a character INTERESTING is! Some characters are protagonists BECAUSE they're so weird looking. And I want to say, I do fall on the same side of the argument and don't like when games make needlessly bland characters. I just don't want our arguments to be derailed into a purely superficial one. We know what they're doing isn't for artistry, but politics.
I feel like the answer has been made hard when its always been simple You're first gutteral reaction to something Everyone knows what ugly is, you feel ugly when you see it, its hard not to know in an instant the same way you know beauty when you see it, whether or not its your definition of attractive doesn't matter Im not attracted to guys but I still know the difference between ugly and not ugly, its not a science, its simple
mind you I say this, but ugly doesn't mean bad, stories can take conventually ugly characters and make a statement about how people ignore looks when a person can bring other things to their character especially in video games where a character being useful matters more than looks the same way an attractive character can be annoying as hell if they're made obnoxious and an asshole
@@metawolf9230i forgot what it made the Hunchback from Notre Dame likeable but I remember the moral of the story is to not judge a book by its cover. I think it was that despite being dealt a bad hand in life, he was still nice.
Beauty is more than symmetry. You don't feel amazed at a sunset, snow capped mountains, or a beautiful woman because they're symmetrical. There's something spiritual going on.
I can totally almost hear your frustration. I completely understand. Everything feels corporate and manufactured and doesn't seem to have any real soul anymore. And I think what makes it worse is that the developers, the people marketing, and the journalists have somehow, and for some reason, made themselves the enemy against the people they WANT paying them. The entitlement is turning people off, and it's also the matter of them constantly insulting gamers as a whole. They have burned the bridges with their customers, and so it’s understandable why the consumer base is annoyed.
@Alteori I certainly agree with you. I was just trying to remind passersby that they're more than just meat machines. Solid video, btw. I've been enjoying your content.
the beauty of a mountain is not the same as the beauty we recognize in a potential mate. This is apples and oranges. As far as sexual attraction goes, symmetry IS extremely important.
Beauty is that perfect balance of chaos and order. Thats why landscapes sunsets and the natural world stirs within in us the spirit of God. The perfect balance of the cosmos and our yearning to be a part of it, to find our place within the world.
She looks and feels just like a lot of recent game times. It’s honestly amazing how so many different studios repackage the same kind of character over and over waiting for one to stick. I can already tell the story is going play it very safe and have a bunch generic monster fights to show off how “badass” the character is. It more than just ugliness at this point, it’s the birth of a new stereotype in fiction.
Games are a form of escapism where the player momentarily escapes into a different reality. It's a fantasy, it's supposed to be better than reality. And reality is ugly, That's why the characters in a work of fiction MUST BE BEAUTIFUL.
With all due respect I get what you're saying by disagree with some of the things you say it's true that reality isn't beautiful but at the same time it's not exactly ugly as you think it is. Not every character in a fantasy world needs to be beautiful we can have the most beautiful characters in a video game but if your gameplay isn't fun then what's the point
fact of the matter is, if the Intergalactic character was just a head in a box talking muted no other details 99% of people who then unmuted would be utterly shocked to hear a female voice coming out of it.
It feels like beauty in general is under assault. Look at "modern" architecture, especially for public buildings. A bunch of ugly, brutalist concrete and glass; we used to make beautiful works of art that were also buildings.
@@bloodlustshiva1 Nobody let this man find out about the GORGEOUS architecture and building style known as Miyadaiku that has buildings that have lasted for hundreds of years
I think one reason that characters might look ugly that people might not be thinking about is just that they don't genuinely smile enough, mostly smirking instead. Smiling literally makes anyone look better, in real life and in games
The thing is, you can still have ugly characters that are beloved by fans, just look at Baraka from Mortal Kombat or Salvador from Borderlands The problem is lot of writters and designers nowadays try so hard to force you to like the cover rather than fill the book with an interesting/enjoyable story. And for what? a bunch of people just want their ego stroked and agenda validated. They likely aren’t even gonna buy the game anyway
"I never said I was going to be professional"?? Don't worry my favorite fluffy fox, we all know what we came here for. Another intelligent look at a topic that will probably be wasted on the haters, but thank you for giving it.
Good news: some breeders are trying to breed some of those issues out of pigs and similar dog breeds. Hope they get the live expectancy of the larger dog breeds up as well.
THat's amazing!!! I also think it should honestly be illegal to breed dogs in a way that lowers their quality of life. It's very inhumane. The Dog shows should ban that as well. Those breeds were fine before they made them into mutants
I wish the conversation would steer a little bit away from "sensuality" or whatever, cause it's only in a superficial sense. Yes, certain things generally look aesthetically more interesting. But ultimately, the problem is more about people being tired of being told what to do and they don't want to lectured in their own entertainment. They can tell when someone is using their entertainment to advertise their own projections instead of making something the best they can in terms of sheer craftsmanship. I know I'm a biased party, because I've never felt like I was very attractive, it's a harsh world. But beauty is not paramount to all else, alot of celebrities and even non-celebribrties are beautiful but not very good moral people and get unfairly rewarded for bad practices. I think by focusing all our rhetoric on sheerly the superficial aspect, we're buying into the "gooner" accusations from the other side, and I know that's not what the argument is about. Characters like Deadpool or in the Dark Souls franchise are purposefully disfigured, because their disfigurement ADDS to the character: not because protagonists are "supposed" to be attractive. When companies like NaughtyDog do this, they're not doing it to ADD to the character or plot. It's to DETRACT from people's conventions of what makes a character interesting in any general sense. Gentrification and Angroneization of traits we understand to be common, but THEY find offensive. I don't disagree with you, I just don't want to these stances to oversimplify into "ugly people bad." We're missing the forest for the trees there.
Hmm that's definitely a fantastic point! That's also why I added that if the characters aren't going to be conventionally attractive, they must at least be charming or likable. You gave Deadpool as an example and notice how people love him because he's funny and likable.
Both conventionally AND unconventionally attracted women must feel slighted. The CA will be like "So you hate us because we're beautiful? 🫠" and the UCA will be like "Wow, way to make me a target?? 😳😩" These design choices may have at some point been made with good intent, but we all know where that leads, eh?
As a comic book artist we tend to portray beauty with women and men is a little different. These are some VERY general ideas but here goes Women: we tend to draw noses smaller, lips, mouths and eyes bigger proportionally and of course a symmetrical components on the face. I also tend to give more room between the eyes and the brow on women to finalize a feminine beautiful face (completely subjective). Body wise we tend to pay closer attention to the shoulder to hip width ratio (wider and = to each other) effectively replicating the age old hourglass form. Men: we tend to build a very square face from the edge of the jaw to the chin, lower the brow closer to the eyes and a more prominent cheek bone to give that masculine look, though anime men tend to go for a more angular, almost feminine face. Body wise, a wider shoulder base compared to hip area tends to work best, nearly creating an inverted triangle. These are very basic concepts for artist that has a very wide range of variation to play with to create the fantasy of beauty. The woman in the intergalactic clips looks like a normal woman with a more masculine face with a much larger nose, thicker eyebrows (proportionally),scarring around the cheek and some skin defects that you could easily find walking on the streets of any city. Is it bad looking (no) Is it realistic (yes) but when you take into account of the current media atmosphere it stands as another example of a person you wouldn't find outside of the norm in the real world. Then we must ask ourselves, is that what the customer wants to see, does it fit the story being told and does it fit the tone of the game.
When characters that we are to be seeimg for ostensibly dozens of hours of gameplay begin to look like some mf I stood in line behind for too long at CVS, we got a problem. If anything it's making for less fun in the cosplay sphere if nobody can even play pretend anymore, just throw on a few nondescript a tems and call it a day with these drab designs. There is space for your characters that can be decidedly low rent looking, but then again, they have to actually be a character first, not a coathanger for ideology
I get so tired of the complete vilification of all beauty standards. Not all of them are based on culture. Even babies prefer symmetrical (attractive) faces over asymmetrical (unattractive) ones. They’ve done studies, and infants will tend to stare at and respond more favorably to attractive faces. This indicates that our preference for symmetrical faces isn’t a societal thing, but a biological one present at birth.
The looks are bad but not unbearable. What made me mad was the McDonald’s diet soda straw included in space. I mean if you are going to do a goofy game go all in but this looks like it’s trying to be serious and goofy at the same time which doesn’t work. But I could be wrong I just haven’t been wrong lately.
What I've learned as a gamer of over 30 years is that nobody ever gets tired of Chun li, Cammy, Mai Shiranui, Lara Croft, Tifa Lockheart and literally any female Resident Evil character. When did making beautiful, fictional, female characters become rocket science?
It's an ongoing trend where people have realized that aesthetic direction has been made with a deliberate choice and ultimately a backlash to a lot of beyond believably bad gaslighting. Females in western media are turning into what resemble male action heroes somehow or people decidedly make characters less feminine or less attractive somehow as point to highlight and prove some sort of moral position. That said... the Gillette meme pick for this Naughty Dog game is hilarious and after the way Druckman did Abbey in the last of us... people are going to dig in a bit about Naughty Dog in particular. I think I started to notice it with material like Mass Effect Andromeda and how some characters resembled their VA rather obviously but not the female Ryder.. and some of the female characters seemed to have a pointed effort in making SOMETHING about their face seem off (cant' explain it but the asari in that game weirded me out like uncanny valley or something). Oh and marval comics... seeing captain marvel look like Jay from clerks and later looking like a jacked captain america with a spiked flat top in some comics. edit: ok my therapist is entering a new tax bracket with those doggo pics
Oh, younglings, we have been through this all before. Back in the seventies, there was a blacklash to fifty years of pretty people in films and then television and a desire for "authenticity" and "relevance". This resulted in the new wave of "average" looking leading actors like Gene Hackman and Charles Bronson or Ellen Burstyn and Sissy Spacek - fine actors all but hardly eye-candy. This didn't last because people want to live vicariously through characters who are smarter, stronger and better looking than they are. This 2020's obsession with wanting to "be seen" and "represented" in all our mundane averageness shall pass...I hope.
It’s also that, a lot of the time these people take a rather attractive actress and make deliberate changes to the model to make the character based on them uglier.
More than the design itself. In this case is the intention behind it that caused the complains. In the past we already had non conventionally atractive characters in media, but people didn't care because there was no political agenda behind it. Now that is not the case.
What made me dislike this character, is when she is sucking on the straw and her face in that moment. Instead of an interesting conversation with the other character about how dangerous this is and weighing outcomes, her face is that of a 15 year just saying "gimme what I want". Such an entitled look that it just turned me off. Oh and the product placement too. Pulls you right out of the world.
At this point South Korea, China and Japan will be the dominant go to for all you're gaming needs because the devs here are too worried about offending their group on Twitter/Bluesky
As a non sexy guy I don't like games and TV shows shoving the spot light on us, we are the dredge of society, meant to die in the background. Let the beautiful people take their proper place as representatives for humanity
Amazing video and very well said. Beauty is a natural thing that humans can perceive and people trying to change what we like or trying to gaslight us will not work.
Here is a major bone I have to pick. Humans have the capacity of higher thinking and should use that when judging people. Is it about the person or animal's looks or what they do? There are ugly dogs that people find cute and pay like 2000 usd for the hairless variety. As a person who can't help being what I am I find it frustrating people are not using their brains to assess people instead of conventional human attractiveness. I know sex sells stuff but that is very superficial. If Tomorrow we were greeted by aliens and told there are many species out there and we got pictures of them do you think we would find them attractive even if they were good, nice aliens? If you went to Star fleet and had to serve with a Klingon or Species 8472 would you be able to or are you that humocentric. People need to rise above this crap. Because it is the people like me that end up getting hurt (even physically beaten) by people like you that judge us so ugly that we are worth beating up. And yes this has happened to me. I agree with some of you presentation but I don't like some of it either. Watch the Star Trek Episode Voyager Real Life. The Character Jeffery after revision finds the life style of Kingons to be attractive and finds the ideals to be nobler. He dresses like them, he knows their language and engages in their customs. He didn't have a problem with attractiveness he realized there was more than just humans and human ideals. If we can't get past our own prejudices how can we move forward? I guess that is why we haven't.
Sometimes it genuinely does feel like that. I feel very unattractive and I know people treat me that way. And I've seen attractive people coast by despite being rude or mean. I still agree with the stance of the video, but it's not because the characters look unattractive. If we follow the logical conclusion of this mentality then we arrive at the idea that all ugly people are bad and unworthy of life. But Deadpool or Abe from Oddworld look "unattractive" in ways that ADD to the character and make for successful protagonists. These characters fail as protagonists because their "unattractiveness" is not to add to anything, but to DETRACT from the audience. Making the conversation about whether we want to make out with our protagonists or not is a misattribution of the true issue. We do have protagonists that aren't neccessarily physically attractive, but for the RIGHT reasons.
For me, it's not that they're ugly (the looks of female or male characters is a mid-concern at best to me) but what's exceptionally important is why they're doing it. One of the first instances I was aware of it was Alloy from HZD. I then saw the same thing with the model for Sarah Rider in ME: Andromeda. The models these women were based on are stunningly beautiful. Compare the face model for Jack Rider and they captured him near perfectly. It's intentional that it's being done too. You can look back at Metal Gear Solid V and see how attractive the female faces are in that game.
They should instruct game developers on the concept of beauty as part of the pre-hiring screening process to ensure that candidates possess a standard understanding of human appearance norms.
Ma'am, the dogs aren't *just* uglier. They literally look dangerous because their expression looks aggressive (snarling, head lowered) as well as not just looking ugly (which you could pick any of a number of cursed-looking rat-dogs) but straight-up DISEASED.
They made the main character the point and the story secondary. And if that character comes across as uninteresting or unlikeable, why would anyone play your game? They should've concentrated on getting us on that story.
When I saw that trailer, I was like, oh what a handsome Asian man. Wait... it has boobs? Spent the rest of the trailer distracted by the appearance, wondering if this is the most DEI we got so far. Bro has thicker wrists than me. Like, muscles aside, the bone structure alone is more masculine than a lot of men. Why do these men hating people try to make female characters look like men as much as possible? :D Like no one is saying every character has to have a doll face, but this... Nah, I'm good.
If you play Mass Effect 2, you'll meet a character named Jack...a short tattooed bald woman who has a flavor for destruction (ironically I feel that Intergalactic wanted to copy that character). She's not physically attractive like Miranda but her personality is what makes her more unique...she doesn't try to be high and mighty (its why she constantly argues with Miranda) and she has survivor's guilt from all of the trauma with Cerberus. If you do her personal mission and romance her, then you help her go past her guilt and she becomes a better person. Jack mellows out in ME3 but she still has her sass and destructive flair.
The only time i really judge somebody my their looks is when they are absolutely insufferable. Everybody alive knows somebody who looks like her, and i can guarantee that they have really unpleasant memories associated with them. When you hijack social signals, you are unfortunately also taking the stigma that has built up around it as well.
A big problem with modern design is the concept of making characters look "relatable" and "like people you'd see in real life" is that 99.999999999999% of the people you see in real life you instantly forget. Protagonists being forgettable isn't a good thing.
You're point about the king and queen can say something and even if people know better they still follow along while main stream media nowadays can't get the same responce speaks to the level of trust and fear people had for monarchy and don't have in democracy people just straight up don't think the media is in anyway above them that they need to listen to them where the monarchy had all the power and influence the media is not smarter or more knowledgeable than the random youtubers people watch and they can see it now more than ever which is the same reason the Hollywood star is dying too, in the west people just don't have reverence for things like authority anymore and can't be told its raining when someone pisses on them anymore, they're eyes and ears are open and they trust their own judgement more
The cool thing is I can call literally everyone on earth ugly and mean it, and I would be 100% correct. Its insane this is an actual, full on, adult conversation in 2024.
There are games from over a decade ago with characters that look far better than they do in new releases. This includes much better 1:1 recreations of the voice actors. So we know the developers can do better. The choice to make characters unattractive is deliberate.
The reason why devs been giving ugly characters is to "combat" sexualization of women. At the same time, they'll sexualize a man. Also COD BO6 has a new bundle in store and the first thing I said was "this is horrendous."
Concept of beauty is to personal interpretation. Like the old saying.. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think everyone understands this but the problem is as simple as "jealousy". Long ago in Junior high School, I have vivid memories of young ladies picking others because of jealousy. And vice versa for young men as well. Some people are unhappy with the way they look and instead of accepting that they are beautiful the way they are they lash out. And this isn't just for my years as a minor, when I grow up and found work the problem persisted. Some people see an attractive man who successful and pick on him and the same is said for women as well. It's an issue that's been going on for probably thousands of years or way more than that. This problem that we're seeing in games is just an evolution of it.
Literally, I was watching Asmon's chat and they were spamming bald as soon as she made her appearance. At that moment I shouted again?!?! Did they not learn??? Apparently not.
As the the saying goes, “if you’re heart is beautiful, then that beauty shines outwardly, if it’s ugly? Then that ugliness overshadows you outwardly.” That really holds up true, in my experience, I was a kid when I saw ‘the Iron Mask’ with Leonardo di Caprio and king Louis was the ugliest person I’ve seen and wasn’t at all attracted to him, but then we’re introduced to his twin, Philip (who is also played by Leo) and I was instantly attractive to me and it absolutely weirded me out, so I turn to my mom and explain my feeling I just experienced and she told me what I quoted above, and that stuck with me my whole life. It literally is the inside that counts, good makes you beautiful while evil makes you ugly.
She looks annoyed and bored, even that blank stare she has in the chair just felt very off putting and didn’t really feel all that interested in see where the character would go or do. And after reading the terrible script leak, makes her arrogant and lacking of any real personality. It’s a hard pass for the game, just because it’s a polished turd, that doesn’t make it not shit. Smh
I think the issue isn't so much the characters are just ugly. Ugly can be an awesome approach to character design and Naughty Dog's Jak and Daxter series is full of intentionally ugly character designs that have stuck with me far more than their more modern character designs. No the issue isn't that the characters are ugly it's as Az put it "They're Booooooorrrrrriiiinnnngggg!!!!!" Remember when people used to complain that every AAA protagonist was a gruff white male with a buzzed haircut well now every AAA protagonist is a buff side shaved or fully shaved snarky female character. People are getting really bored with seeing this same character trope thrown in their face over and over again by western AAA games, so they're going elsewhere for something more original. The problem though is because these are female protagonists every keyboard warrior has to defend them like they're the next best thing to sliced bread. Well that bread's been molding for years at this point and people are now avoiding it every time they see it. Maybe come up with something new instead. Also the solution isn't just to make every character sexy. Yeah it's nice to have more sexy characters for sure, but what's more important is good character design. Drop the realism and do a more unique art style. Have a good mixture of ugly and beautiful. Heck make ugliful characters that straddle the line between what is considered ugly and beautiful. A unique character design like that will stick with the player far more than boring modern female character design number 1592. I'll take more Onin or Crew like character designs over the generic slop character design Naughty Dog's new protagonist has.
Im neutral to this and i understand people have a preference on what beauty is but NGL when she shaved her head I busted out laughing, plus we don't know why she did it nor have context why that's the case. You can say because she's a bounty hunter and she's going to battle but there are other characters that have their hair out or have short hair that 90% don't have this problem regardless of male or female. I've seen the comparison of Ripley from alien 3 but we know the context of why she shaved her head cause she was in a male prison.
To add the whole biology of attractiveness thing, while the standards of beauty have changed over time, they're still based on certain biological factors. For instance, in pre-industrial times the standard of beauty for women was pale skin and what we'd consider on the slightly chubby side. This meant that the woman was a person of means, they were fair/pale because they could afford to spend all of their time inside and not out in the sun working the fields. Being slightly on the chubby side meant that they had plenty to eat and they have to perform any form of manual labor that would make them lean. Fast forward to the modern age and it's all flipped, men (generally) like their women slim and (somewhat) tanned. Different standards, but it meant the same thing, the woman could afford to work out and keep slim/fit and had enough leisure time spend outdoors and get tanned.
I think that's the problem with a lot of modern games everything looks the same, it's uninspired and unoriginal. When I watched the video game awards im watching the trailers going "I don't care about any of this!!!" The was only one or two titles that looked interesting other than that its about it. It seems that developers are racing to see who can make the most realistic characters at the expense of unlikable personalities I think that's why we see them as ugly. Some of the best games flying under the radar are indie titles that are made not using the latest game engines.
I miss that we used to be so good at creating appealing games. Did they forget we like ESCAPISM? Have they forgotten tons of game genres exist? Did they forget different art styles exist? I swear the game industry is so fixated on realism, ray tracing & 4k resolution. That they've forgotten how important stuff like physics effects, rag doll effects, using creative graphics, damage effects and interactive environments. Having a variety of different Single player modes. Current games are way too focused on graphics that they forget they're making a game that's supposed to be fun & appealing. Did the industry forget what fun & visually appealing is? I wish we could see a massive improvement in the ways video games can be made. I swear the fact game development is so unintuitive it restricts so much creativity and doesn't click with so many creative artistic people who do want to make games..
Interesting that you showed a picture of Abe from Oddworld in the "ugly" characters, because I feel like there is a sweet spot in character design where something ugly can be made appealing. Abe is ugly, but he's also very likeable. It's probably the eyes, he's got those big, sad puppy dog eyes that make you feel bad for him.
The best way I can describe it, is spiteful design. For example the Netflix Tomb Raider, throughout the whole show her body type changes from regular to deformed yet insanely jacked. They wanna break the stereotypical mold so badly, that they break everything else, and refuse to take criticism. Side note ALL dog examples must be loved even the ugly ones!
Ok talking about ppl not being fat in the past reminded me of this. There’s a funny little story in the Bible about a fat king: Israel had been conquered by Moab, so they needed to take out the king of Moab. The warrior Ehud pretends to give a tribute to the king, but tells the king he has a secret message for him. When the king leans in, ehud whispers, “I have a message from God for you.” He then stabs the king with a hidden sword, but he was unable to pull the sword free. The king was so fat that the sword disappeared into the fat rolls and couldn’t be retrieved. So ya, some ancient ppl were very fat, but as said, they were the rich and powerful ppl.
We all know why they do this: Insecurity, plus DEI, plus "needing to see myself represented" narcissism. We don't even need "hot" characters in games per se; we just don't want characters who are as ugly as us, if not worse. I mean, I'm only 180 cm and equally as ugly as I am short, but even I look better than Horizon Forbidden West Aloy, the Fable reboot protagonist, or that lesbian from Intergalactic. They're not just not-attractive; they're outright *UGLY.*
I just watched the first episode of Secret Level, there was a female paladin character that’s bare a lot resemblance to Tarsh(?) from Veilguard, and to my surprise she was not at all insufferable. Evidently it was never about the character design (conventional beauty), her gender, skin color or sexuality. It was about her personality.
I think we all inherently know what is attractive. Attraction to physical beauty is what allowed the human species to survive this long. Physical beauty almost always signifies good health and the natural instinct tells us to reproduce with someone who is healthy.
In Space, no one can hear you shave.

“What makes game characters ugly?”
Answer: The jealous, pretentious and arrogant designers that like to virtue signal
The idiots who believe that a woman can't be pretty, has to be totally masculine and can't have any character flaws.

The same insufferable personalities that you would have on a man but they expect you to like the character because woman.
These character are self-inserts and therefore naturally the most insufferable, smug and deranged narcists you can imagine.
Whomever things girls would give up their beauty like that just doesn't understand women.

as a female GAMER™, i don't wanna play this game on the basis of the way she looks, shallow?
It’s not what makes game characters ugly.
It’s WHY make game characters ugly.
Yes!
We know what they're doing isn't for artistry, but politics.
the same people that complained that "only beautiful people can get roles" and making it so only ugly people gets roles. what about balance?

the same way you know beauty when you see it, whether or not its your definition of attractive doesn't matter
Im not attracted to guys but I still know the difference between ugly and not ugly,
its not a science, its simple
AMEN! 100% But I feel like people have forgotten this somehow and need it carefully spelled out for them or something lol
mind you I say this, but ugly doesn't mean bad, stories can take conventually ugly characters and make a statement about how people ignore looks when a person can bring other things to their character especially in video games where a character being useful matters more than looks

@Harvest133 I worded that poorly. I don't mean to say it's not important, what I am saying is that symmetry is not all that's occurring.

I think one reason that characters might look ugly that people might not be thinking about is just that they don't genuinely smile enough, mostly smirking instead. Smiling literally makes anyone look better, in real life and in games
The thing is, you can still have ugly characters that are beloved by fans, just look at Baraka from Mortal Kombat or Salvador from Borderlands

It's jealousy. Plain and simple

Both conventionally AND unconventionally attracted women must feel slighted. The CA will be like "So you hate us because we're beautiful? 🫠" and the UCA will be like "Wow, way to make me a target?? 😳😩"
These design choices may have at some point been made with good intent, but we all know where that leads, eh?
As a comic book artist we tend to portray beauty with women and men is a little different. These are some VERY general ideas but here goes
Women: we tend to draw noses smaller, lips, mouths and eyes bigger proportionally and of course a symmetrical components on the face.

And that was based on an actual real human!!! 😅😅
We need stylized games back, realism brings boring designs.
Is this like a PSA for the 4B movement?!
THE DEVELOPERS!! Answered your title for ya.

They just made the annoying girl boss character in an Asian font this time. How diverse.
No. I thought she was the same, but no. This actress is the one from the Netflix Sabrina and played an antagonist in the Uncharted movie.
It’s your first thought Alteori, it’s the personality and how they act that makes them ugly
"A character can't be [more beautiful] than its creator." This is the narcissist's playbook
YES!!!! She looked SO ick!!!! That was it for me too and the way she treated the agent, whom I like better

I am so happy we finally have a strong female character we can play in a video game. 👏👏👏
Look, I'm not going to take a bounty hunter seriously when they don't know how to use an electric shaver.
To be honest its crazy when sfm artists can turn these characters that got hit with the ugly stick and turn them into bombshells.
Like no one is saying every character has to have a doll face, but this...

You're point about the king and queen can say something and even if people know better they still follow along while main stream media nowadays can't get the same responce speaks to the level of trust and fear people had for monarchy and don't have in democracy
people just straight up don't think the media is in anyway above them that they need to listen to them where the monarchy had all the power and influence
the media is not smarter or more knowledgeable than the random youtubers people watch and they can see it now more than ever which is the same reason the Hollywood star is dying too, in the west people just don't have reverence for things like authority anymore and can't be told its raining when someone pisses on them anymore, they're eyes and ears are open and they trust their own judgement more
5:22 ah yes, the Martian body style is obviously superior.
Arrogance, pettiness, unearned self-righteousness, and a lack of self-awareness on both their part and the writers'.
Then that ugliness overshadows you outwardly.”
That really holds up true, in my experience, I was a kid when I saw ‘the Iron Mask’ with Leonardo di Caprio and king Louis was the ugliest person I’ve seen and wasn’t at all attracted to him, but then we’re introduced to his twin, Philip (who is also played by Leo) and I was instantly attractive to me and it absolutely weirded me out, so I turn to my mom and explain my feeling I just experienced and she told me what I quoted above, and that stuck with me my whole life.

No the issue isn't that the characters are ugly it's as Az put it "They're Booooooorrrrrriiiinnnngggg!!!!!"
Remember when people used to complain that every AAA protagonist was a gruff white male with a buzzed haircut well now every AAA protagonist is a buff side shaved or fully shaved snarky female character.
That little african girl afraid the white man would eat him is hilarious 😂
The tiny jumping spiders are adorable and if you have them as a pet, they are extremely curious creatures.
She's a wanted criminal and did it to disguise herself, somehow. The game's plot was leaked.
I thought that woman got killed in Alien Romulus.
It was the "I'm so Quirky" soda slurp and the smug eyes.
Hey!...don't bully sloth. He is a beautiful creature...
Ok talking about ppl not being fat in the past reminded me of this. There’s a funny little story in the Bible about a fat king:
Israel had been conquered by Moab, so they needed to take out the king of Moab.
The fact that this 37.03 video is necessary, when it talks about something that should be this obvious to everyone, blows my mind.
I think we all inherently know what is attractive. Attraction to physical beauty is what allowed the human species to survive this long. Physical beauty almost always signifies good health and the natural instinct tells us to reproduce with someone who is healthy.
Why was that little girl scared that the guy was gonna eat her? He had eaten two children earlier and couldn’t manage another snack!

Unless you're Asmongold
If I bought a game to play for hours, I would atleast want the character I see the most to be not unpleasing to look at
