- DAVE KNOWS that Jerry the King Lawler is the all time record holder for having the most championships ever. But how many exactly is that? Well it's a lot. And I intend to cover all of them.. or at least as many as I can.

Even with the controversy, for him to have anywhere near close to triple digits is insane and he deserves his place in wrestling history.
Between that and the Andy thing and commentary, I think his legacy is set
People who only know Lawler as an announcer have now idea that Jerry is a wrestling legend.

They were afraid to acknowledge anybody outside of their company that's why they never took their built over to Japan like Lawler did! He went over there with his title and brought back his title and they were not the type of wrestlers that were able to do the same thing! That's why Jerry Lawler called them company wrestlers because that's all they were they wrestled within their company and that's it
Because Memphis was a minor promotion and he owned a stake in it .Its like being unimpressed with Verne Gagnes 11 AWA reigns when he owned the company .

One reason , years ago , after beating Jack Briscoe , and working with the NWA in a cross promotion- he had too much trouble getting flair to drop the tithe even as a one off - so they made a decision to work with the AWA , where Lawler beat Henning for the title. Hard feelings happened when they did that.

They wouldnt put up their World Championship title because they never considered any other territories as legitimate franchises. Therefore if their "World Champion" lost to an "Unlegitimate World Champion", their Star wouldnt be shining so bright anymore. Same exact thing with WCW. WCCW were the only ones to put their Champion Kerry Von Erich up against USWA Champion Jerry Lawler for a unified title, which resulted in Kerry losing the belt to Lawler. WWF and WCW refused to put up their belts, that were being held by Hogan and Flair. Im pretty sure this information is correct, but not positive. Im going by memory and am too lazy to look it up to make sure i got it all correct. Lol

I think the reason they didn't was because they made him a heel, clown, face, heel, face... and then the money too. Remember that wwe had "heat" in memphis long ago. So, I can see it as, "we helped memphis get national recognition, so, here's what we're gonna do with you."
Nice Video Dave. I think Jerry deserves alot More Credit then he often gets. It's sad that so many fans only Recognize him as an Announcer, & don't know what a great Wrestler he was. They made a whole movie about his feud with Andy Kaufman. Alot of us Gen Xers knew he wrestled and what a big deal he was. Alot of that just fades with time.

PWI only recognized the NWA, WWF, & AWA world titles by the time Lawler won in 1988. Technically, he's only a 1 time AWA World Champion. WCWA World Title was never recognized by PWI.

It is a scripted business. So who really cares? Lawler is the best overall talent in the ring I ever saw. You have to be doing something right when you draw money like he did for as long as he did. While he booked many of his championship reigns, he put other guys over too.
For the last thing you are absolutely right. To win so many times so many titles, you must to lost many too.

The Southern Heavyweight Belt was the Main Championship in Memphis. Lawler continually won & lost the belt. Also, I remember a Southern Tag Team Championship that he Bill Dundee(there may have been other partners) won a few times.

Btw, World Class has NEVER gone by the abbreviation WCWA. It's officially WCCW. The Texas Heavyweight Championship was also a recognized title in Southwest Championship Wrestling, who also had a unified Heavyweight Championship title before Lawler's.
Yes. Fred Ward was legendary for having a relationship with a booking office, in this case Atlanta, while booking his own programs simultaneously. Some local promoters enjoyed a certain political stature and therefore could get away with it. Bobby Heenan spoke of Killer Karl Kox constantly throwing the belt in the trash when he was Macon champion.

back 8n the 70s Lawler was the best heel ever. I remember when I was a kid and would be acting up and getting in trouble the adults would shout come on Lawler the Lance Russell did on Saturday morning television when Lawler would hit somebody with a chain or throw powder in there eyes. it was a great time for wrestling and a great time to be a kid
I grew up on the CWA. It was powerful enough to absorb territories owned by Goulas, the Poffos, and Fritz von Erich. Flair tries to cheapen Lawler's accomplishments because The King stayed loyal to Memphis. In reality, he was the fourth legend from the city that produced Sputnik Monroe, Elvis, and Jackie Fargo, and he broke Elvis' record of the number of times selling out the MidSouth Colliseum. The MSC actually outperformed MSG as a wrestling venue at one time.

He also won a women's champion title, the second man to ever hold a woman's championship title belt. It was Kaufman that forced him to take the title and to defend his current title belt at the time. It was definitely amusing. Ownership of Both belts was intertwined briefly and once they were separated new rules had to be implemented to keep it from happening again. Before doing so Lawler had tried to throw a match to relinquish ownership of the women's champion title belt but Kaufman had forced him to relinquish his other title belt.

People can debate how many championships Lawler won, but there is no debate that Lawler could fill the Mid South Colosseum if he was wrestling a broom.. The man was one of both the greatest heels(bad guy) and greatest faces(good guy) of all time.

The problem with Jerry The King Lawler's championships is that he was the Booker so he basically just booked himself as the champion.

I wish most people could see what i grew up watching over the years as a Memphian. Jerry lawler has beaten all the greats...some just getting started, some in their prime, and others at the end of their careers. But he was man and knowbody talks about how dirty he can be as a heel or the use of the fireball that he would throw at opponents in the ring. Me personally i think when he came to the WWF/ E, I think they made or tried to make him into a joke and i hated because i know how good he is. Come on not one wwe title smh they are wrong for that.
Well, hopefully there are some kids out there who go on the WWE Network and watch the NWA and AWA. And while I agree that it's a bit of a shame that Jerry never won gold in the WWE, another part of me likes it, because it shows that the WWE isn't the end all be all of a great career

Technically it was the AWA World Tag Titles, but since those belt WERE the NWA World tag belts and they used to be counted as such, even in the AWA, I decided to count them as the NWA World Tag Belts and he won them both with Bill Dundee.

With all these legitimate reigns (I trust your research) as well as other things he has accomplished (feuds, promotion work, commentary work, etc)...one would wonder why isn't he considered higher in the pantheon of Pro Wrestling along with Flair, Hogan, etc. In fact, as one who used to faithfully buy those Apter mags back in the day, when they did rankings I used to routinely see Lawler's name as a consistent #3 in the rankings (and I think even as high as #2 after he beat Kerry Von Erich at SuperClash 3), right along with Hogan and Flair.
And I'm not even a fan of his. But I give credit where it's due.
I think it's mainly because he never got there on a national level. His biggest claim to fame for mainstream media is probably the Kaufman feud.. which isn't exactly going to put you over in the same way as Andre would. As big as he was in the South, I think he needed a bit more exposure.. and not during the 80's when the scene was already so full
Dave Knows Wrestling I don't think you give the Andy Kaufman situation enough credit. At the time, it was nationwide news that could've catapulted Lawler...as it included a celebrity figure in an angle that precedes anything Vince McMahon did. Considering how strong Kayfabe was then and the parties involved, that would make Lawler a trailblazer at the very least. I just don't think that either he or his handlers had the foresight to capitalize on such heat...much like Verne Gagne and AWA's demise, despite the fact that most of the GOAT's came from that territory. Kaufman's untimely death didn't help much either.
You misunderstand me. I totally acknowledge how recognized it was, I even talked about the Letterman appearance on another episode. My point is, in the 80's, Flair was feuding with Dusty and Hogan had Andre and Piper. Feuding with a celebrity may get you exposure, but not the kind that makes you Hogan or Flair
Dave Knows Wrestling Absolutely. No argument here. I was just saying from that aspect he was ahead of his time. I was more of an NWA fan back then, so Flair/Dusty was Gold, whereas Hogan/Andre, though looking back in hindsight was more important to the industry, the WWF was just more fictional and cartoonish to me. And I was a kid then. Lol. The NWA, its title and its brand, seemed the most legitimate and prestigious of all the territories.

Jerry Lawler is a great professional Wrestler and entertainer. For most of his career prior to him joining the Federation he was kind of a bad a$$ but that deal with Andy Kaufman was so entertaining. I believe Lawler said that Andy really used to irritate him sometimes when they were working together but back then I couldn't tell if that was a shoot or he was just in character. Jerry Lawler was always somebody that I took seriously. He never came off to me as a punk. He was a bit scary sometimes because his work was tough. Also his Piledriver was pretty damn good. Then in the Federation he began to show even more of his comedic side on the mic and doing commentary. I've heard different things about him personally. I heard he was one of the guys that helped The Rock very early in his wrestling career. The King is cool with me.
Ive seen some of his old stuff, he was quite good and I was pleasantly suprised, I think he's quite underrated amongst younger fans who aren't fully aware of his history

Your comment about the JAPW Heavyweight Championship is false. JAPW itself was a great promotion when "Fat" Frank was still alive and promoting. It was and still is one of my favourite independent promotions. Saying that title is not always recognized is pretty ignorant. A number of former and current WWE superstars, big names in the industry who have never been in the WWE, and legends have won the title. Al Snow, Brodie Lee aka Luke Harper, Jay Lethal, Homicide, Rhyno, Kenny Omega, Low Ki, and Teddy Hart are the names people know who have won the title. Just because you say something doesn't necessarily make it true. In closing, yes, this title is recognized.
I'm not criticizing the JAPW and I was not saying that there isn't a lot of greatness from the JAPW. I simply said it is not recognized by EVERYBODY. BY many yes, but not all. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.
