- DAVE KNOWS that the NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE is one of the most historic and respected wrestling organizations of all time. It's influence is fundamental to so much, if not everything, of what we see today. However, there is a one single express reason why the NWA was created in the first place. So today let's look at the REAL REASON that the National Wrestling Alliance was created.

Excellent video history of the NWA. Also, great jab at TNA/Impact, as you know they had a partnership with the NWA, till they got greedy with the NWA World Heavyweight and World Tag Team titles. That was why the NWA took the belts back and ended the agreement with TNA.
What always amazes me is that promotions can come and go, but the NWA is forever
thank you for the awesome info. Yes, the NWA had a $25,000 .00 bond on the world belt. Because, WCW brought out the old NWA and phased it out , they forgot the loop hole with the "bond". Ric Flair took the belt to WWF in 1992. What a lot of these morons forget once you become the world champion you are indeed entitled to the belt , along with the $25,000.00

This was a clever, entertaining video that did a decent job of giving a summary and overview of the history of the NWA. Things were a bit more complicated than presented, but there's only so much you can do in 10 minutes. For a detailed history of the NWA I highly recommend Tim Hornbaker's "NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE MONOPOLY THAT STRANGLED WRESTLING."

Dave, I enjoy your videos dude. They are informative and your very relatable. But I must say that this is one of the funniest videos you've done, hands down my favorite so far as I've only started watching your channel a few months ago and this one is from 2017. I really enjoyed the cut aways after the announcer gave you one of his off the wall "views", like about smoking for example. Your "you turned out" joke was great and your tone of voice was perfect. I enjoy that dry kind of humor. Anyway I'm rambling so to close....This video was f'n awesome!!! Keep up the good work!

How about a mini Documentary on some old school legends like George Hackenschmidt, Ed The Strangler Lewis, Farmer Burns, Frank Gotch, etc... Also I have always been curious to find out more about how Pro Wrestling went from being completely Legitimate, Like Gotch & Hackenschmidt to becoming "Sports Entertainment." Found this channel last night and been watching probably a few too many videos. Already recommended to friends. This one, with the announcer, is the first time I've fully guffawed at any of the jokes. I've always had an enjoyment for 1940's radio announcers. (For the record, it was the "Never trust an Ital-" joke, as an Italian-American myself, that sh*t's funny.)

I just liked his old announcer voice and came up with an excuse to put him in the episode, he doesn't even like wrestling. When he said that Italian line, I was totally unprepared.. for the record he is half Italian himself. He went on from there, but I knew I had to cut it.. although he thought I should have kept it all in

Absolutely LOVED this episode ! The 40's motif, and the annoying news announcer was hilarious . And the old news reel bit just put it over the top. The people complaining about this episode are most likely below 40 years old and just have no connection with the style. Granted I am only in my early 50's, still an old fart I am told, I remember them being woven in the "World at War" series. Keep up the good work.

To give Lou Thesz the chance to become a 6-time world heavyweight champion and hold that title the longest time. Lou was so iconic to the sport. He would have made a fine college wrestling coach.

That was a fun video. I get a kick out of some of the polls that list Ric Flair, for example, as the best wrestler of all time.
Lou Thesz would have destroyed him in a shoot or work and so would Buddy Rogers.
Rogers, by the way, only beat Lou Thesz once in all their matches in a Texas title bout in 1950. If you get a chance, check out the one hour draw between Rogers and Thesz from the International Ampitheater in 1951. This is what pro wrestling was and, unfortunately, we'll never see that kind of mat action again thanks to VKM who absolutely ruined the sport.
Now the NWA is making a come back...Being a promotion all to itself...My question with that is will they continue the same expression of the founders or be more like the other promotions around the world.
I would like to find that out as well
If I ran the National Wrestling Alliance, I'd crown Dave as the first NWA TH-camr Heavyweight Champion. The NWA TH-camr Heavyweight Championship is a custom NWA World Heavyweight Championship with replacable sideplates.

Haha, I thought he was funny and wanted him to use his old timey announcer voice in a video and he knows nothing about wrestling. Plus I feared that a sepia tone episode about the NWA's origins needed a bit of color commentary to hold people's attention. Perhaps it wasn't needed.
David Frederick I completely agree with you. I love it when we see people who actually know true facts about wrestling. Sorry to say, I don't watch anymore because the passion is gone. So yes that guy in the background distracted me from enjoying this video.

Just found your channel. What do you think of the book National Wrestling Alliance: The Untold Story of the Monopoly That Strangled Pro Wrestling, by Tim Hornbaker? I've just started it, but it doesn't seem to be written very well, and based on what what little bit I've read so far, both NWAs existed by 1941? It's a hard read to follow since I'm not that up on my old timey wrestling history.

Lou Daro's big international tournament that Vincent Lopez won in the mid 1930's was anything but legitimate.
I question if the "real reason" the NWA was created was to have a true world champion. At the end of the day the promoters are only in the business for money. I don't they cared about the truth in their belts worth. I'd say it was created as a loose alliance so they wouldn't have to compete against each other and make money off each other
Things aren't black and white. A successful business doesn't mean their sole intent was money and therefore nothing else was a goal. In today's society I feel there is a lot of stress placed on making everything an absolute, instead of realizing that things can be multifaceted

32 years I spent in wrestling and there was NEVER a time decisions were made for a Championship not even the NWA as the members abandon the NWA as soon as it was no longer of profit as WWF had taken over in almost every Territory and the public had decided that WWF style wrestling was what they wanted. SO even NWA was nothing but a prop for Jim Crockett as Flair was NO LONGER BOOKED OUT by the NWA but by Crockett and that would prove Historically that each office /Territory by paying dues (where is your history of the dues paid?) You have simply repeated what many already know and have written. However you say nothing of the TRUTH behind the NWA ! It was a way to have one Champion that was CONTROLLED and was paid a % that in some towns that was less than the $25 made by local undercard guys. It would be like todays INDY wrestling getting together to have one Champion that could be controlled by a deposit of what was $60,000 and was usually put up by a sponsoring office like the Funks had their DAD and would never have been Champions had it not been for him and Jim Barnett getting Dory Jr ready by working in Australia with Kowalski and others. I could go on all day with this, but why bother as the "Smart Marks" who are really the biggest marks or historians will disagree!! However since I was a kid I lived it.
I believe the real world champion would lead to more money. I agree there is no 0ther reason. You're right.
One more thing I have noticed that WWE was advertising ROH on their commercial breaks on USA for the last couple months.
They've done stuff like that before. If memory serves, I do remember a few WCW commercials on during the Boom

Well hard to say. It's not like something is recognized or it's not. It's how many groups recognize them. For example, PWI only recognizes the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

@@DaveKnowsWrestling maybe you should make a video about that. Considering that there are plenty of former world champions in WWE that don't get recognized by WWE. AJ Styles, Tyler Black, Kevin Steen, Shinsuke Nakamura, Samoa Joe, and quite a few others were World Champions before joining the WWE and don't ever get recognized as such.
There's something like 250 different Indy promotions in the States right now. There's nothing really stopping all of them from recognizing their own world champion.

ill admit to being a little foggy on Lou having held the WWA title when he became the first nwa world champion. I understand your logic for the extra production & all I felt it went over fine & well done.Ya gotta hold their attention esp.younger fans who might be learning wrestling history for the first time. That was great when he chimed in "never trust an Italian!" funny stuff.Wrestling really was mafia like in those days a apparently. Outside of being more tame now, its a lot like it was say in the twenties,thirties,with no recognized champ & mini alliances here and there.I think the so called "independent"promotions,which isn't really an accurate term now but it works,is still the backbone of wrestling,I liken it to the rhythm section of a rock n roll band if anyone can identify with that.Still largely under nwa control,that and guys like David Marquez in Hollywood and wcwc etc in uwn after leaving when Tharpe did his little "hostile takeover..One goal I hope they consider is healing that most recent wound first now that Tharpe is out of the top seat.Cause you almost got an east/west division as it stands,no need for that.Although I'm sure the wrestlers are able to move across those boundaries but being united in name helps in visibility and fans being able to understand what they got. Yeah low subscribers for knowing your history I'm on board.Real well done.

The dominance of the NWA led to their own downfall when politics behind the curtain led to some promoters upset and breaking away from it. Snowballing its way until the NWA's influence was no longer a thing.
Without the NWA the WWE, AEW, WCW and basicly all other big wrestling companies wouldnt exist

Everytime I see Dave all I can think about is what he looks like when he's off the cuff full throttle PISSED.
Ironically, now WWE (the company most responsible for the death of the territory system and the decline of the NWA's relevance) is the closest thing to an NWA in wrestling today, with several -territories- brands under their umbrella: Raw, Smackdown, NXT, 205, UK, and soon Japan if the rumors are to be believed.

I am a big fan of the NWA now with Billy Corgan in charge of the NWA with Nick Aldis Tim storm Cody Rhodes and the Mac my exposure to the NWA was WWF versus the NWA invasion and NWA TNA watching the old WCW Wild Things 90 wrestlewar the national wrestling alliance with WCW

I really loved the short documentary! But it was ruined by the back guy. His constant interruptions were annoying. He didn't add anything to the video, even humor. These kind of documentaries should be straightforward.
This was an early video for me. I wasn't sure how my audience was going to take to an episode about early wrestling and done in black & white. And I find him funny and told him just to be annoying to me. It was meant to break up the seriousness. In the time since, I have become pleasantly surprised that so many ppl like just straight up wrestling history

This whole video was just made as an excuse to put him in it. He always did the old timey voice which I found it funny and he doesn't like wrestling. So I tried to think of a subject to cover around this time period. And I was also experimenting with history videos at the time and wasn't sure if fans would like a video talking about a topic from such a long time ago. So I incorporated humor in hopes of keeping ppl's attention

Yeah this was in the beginning when I thought ppl wouldn't care about old school history and felt like I had to do something to keep their attention, especially with limited visuals from the era. However, I swiftly learned how much ppl love wrestling history

No mention of either the Lewis or Stecher troupes that rules wrestling during the 20's or 30's? Those were early precursors to what would become the NWA [Alliance.] One of the main reasons why the world title scene became so splintered during the 1940's is because of Dick Shikat's infamous shoot on world champion Danno O'Mahoney in 1936. O'Mahoney had been considered the undisputed world champion at the time, and the shoot destroyed any credibility wrestling had maintained. The troupes lost power, and before WWII no less than half a dozen recognized world champions were being promoted across the country. The NWA [Association] had been in the back pockets of the troupes really since day one, and it was their failure to bring any real order to the world title scene of the 40's that prompted Pinkie George to create his own league.

That reporter is obnoxious. I would have loved to hear more about the legendary National Wrestling Alliance but I just couldn't follow after the distractions.
This was my first outing in really old wrestling history. So I thought it needed humor to keep people's attention. I learned after this that the audience is all in on stuff like this so I never had to bother again

At the time, I didn't think anyone would sit thru an episode all about old wrestling and I personally thought his character stuff was funny, but lesson learned, now the history videos are just history
