Palette 2 honest review - 4 colours for your existing 3D printer!

  • The Palette 2 can be added to any FDM 3D printer to enable four colour 3D printing. It cuts and splices together filament to make a continuous strand that is fed into the printer. Ping and pong checking is used to monitor filament flow and make adjustments mid print to keep everything in sync. At least that is how it works most of the time..
    This is a very well made product with great potential. My best results (Prusa MK3) were fantastic and anyone I showed multi-colour prints to was instantly impressed. My worst results (Ender 3) were very frustrating with no clear improvements or answers. So far the tech support has been good so hopefully my Ender 3 issues are resolved.
    I think the hardware is sound, so the necessary improvements can be made for free with firmware and software updates. I will make a follow up video with the resolution to my issues and more advanced multi material prints. I will also compare it to a budget dual extrusion printer: the Geeetech A10M.
    The Palette 2 and Canvas hub was sent tome for free for the purposes of making this review. All opinions expressed are my own.

    Seems like impressive engineering but still seems very pricey and I just wouldn't use it that often. The purge blocks are alarmingly large though. Overall cool to see this technology is out there.

      The purge blocks are large, sure. However they are always the same size , regardless of the size of the object you're printing. Not to mention that the block becomes more voluminous depending on how many switches you make.

    Very good review. I feel like 3D printing can be somewhat finicky anyway and adding this just multiplies the number of things that can potentially go wrong. Kudos to them for such a clever idea though.

    I glad you did this. I was thinking about getting one of these but maybe not now. I would love if you did a review of a diamond hotend. It's something I recently found as an alternative to the pallet. And since you can do color gradienting with the right setting I though it might be better for cheaper.
    Your videos have helped me a lot and I really appreciate it. My ender 3 is pretty cool now, silent and double the base hight. If it wasn't for your tutorials I would have no idea how to modify marlin to my liking.

    Great review here Michael! I think the real value in this device is in adding soluble supports or different materials into a single extruder printer. If you really need multiple colors, priming and painting is a better option IMO.

    Firstly great and honest review, i have found that just redoing the model into sepparate pieces and printing the pieces sepparatly is a better option at this time. The price of a pallette is just not justified atm, plus the wasted filament. Again thanks mic.

      I would have to agree on that aspect too, even though I'm wowed by the technology that makes it possible.....just too complicated for when things go haywire and new technology soon makes it out of date...….printing separate parts is simple and you get perfect results even if you have to spend a bit more time to do it. I think if a multi filament work head was designed or invented it could do the same but simpler.

  • @Midnight24435
    @Midnight24435 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Entirely too expensive. It's literally double the price of many 3D printers. Why does Mosaic think that's even feasible? The waste blocks are huge... And you have to pay EVEN MORE for an extended warranty? No, totally not worth that kind of money.
    Great review; thank you for being very clear, factual, and precise with your review.

    Excellent review, please do a follow up with the resolution when you can. It is far more valuable to show us the problems and fixes that are part of the real experience with these devices.
    I hope you get to use the new Prusa MMU2S, I have had this running for about 5 weeks. It is "now" very reliable, it took several jams for me to fully understand what was going on and develop quick fixes. I haven't lost any print jobs as the clearance is simple and the resume is reliable, it generally occurs when it is extracting filament and the material has "torn off" in the head not forming a clean tip. This is a function of material and temperature (and probably moisture).

  • @halsaresnowpaw522
    @halsaresnowpaw522 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I first got my Palette 2, I would have inconsistent results like this. I could get the calibration prints perfect and then a fairly good print and then the problems. What the issue was for me is the print speed was too high in the slicer and the output buffer would under flow. The Palette couldn't splice the filament fast enough. The Palette 2 has a lower maximum feed rate than the Palette 2 Pro. Once I got the speed right, the output buffer stopped under flowing and the prints came out perfect. This was with my Prusa MK3 and Printrbot Simple Metal. I wasn't able to test it on the Ender 3.
    As for the purge block, I am doing the Bear Upgrade on my MK3 and after I move, I was planning on making a slight change to the Bear by adding about 10mm width to the X axis so I could add a purge bucket. That would reduce the waste a lot.

    I had the exact same problem. Went back to calibration. Manully Ran clear filament through till it ran clear. Then went through calibration, being very careful on when the color changed (on mk3 use settings/axis/extruder. Did a few key chains and earphone holder. all good, saved each print results. I have not had a problem again. When I first set it up I was using the load filament command. I think that is what was screwing everything up..... at least for me

    I purchased one and after messing with it and constantly having issues with huge purge blocks filament breaks and other issues sold it for a song. I now print anything that I want to add multiple colors to in white PLA and air brush on the color. Advantages are that it is far cheaper, I can add as many colors as i want, I can shade and blend colors, and it is great fun, and no one ton purge block collection.

    Great and honest review. The hardware looks solid but unfortunately the software issues are definitely an impediment. With the community's help I hope they can overcome the frustrations after spending $500 on this hardware. I was tempted to buy one when they had them on sale but I had concerns after reading the user community mixed feedback. Your Ender 3 was heavily modified including a direct drive extruder and I'm wondering if that may have contributed in part to some of your issues. This really is a game changer. I think one integrated piece of software would be a better solution. Jumping between software packages with different revisions might lead to problems.

    Excelente explicação, fiquei impressionado com a tecnologia da Pallet2 Pro, acabei comprando de um distribuidor aqui no Brasil, achei que mesmo não sendo um especialista em Impressões 3D conseguiria usar a Pallet2.
    Fiz a calibração da Impressora e em seguida iniciei a Pallet2 Pro e não tive sucesso nas impressões, os problemas que encontrei foram exatamente os que você menciona no seu vídeo.
    Acredito que essa tecnologia ainda vai ter sucesso, se você conseguir melhores resultados continue postando, parabéns pelo trabalho.

I've watched a few reviews so far and it seems the Pallet purge tower is much larger than the Prusa tower, even ignoring some of the extra features the Prusa solution offers. Just to give some advice, I've been testing the palette 2 pro for abs/hips D&D character + full support and what i've found is that the reason the color fails for me is that the filament starts to jam when switching the filament. I haven't found the perfect settings but my guess is that we both need to spend more time with the splice settings. Really get the diameter of the splice dialed in. Also it is possible that the palette is overheating the material & degrading it. So maybe try a lower heat. Though I really think the issue is just the diameter of the splice.

    A note on the Canvas Hub. The octoprint installation it ships with has no drivers for a USB camera. I disassembled mine, cloned and inspected the installed PI + octoprint software to confirm this. It also has no login password to secure it within your home network. As a result, mine sits unused in the box. Cannot recommend as it is more fully featured, secure, and cheaper to DIY with a better rasperry PI and the free plugins.

    I do own a Palette 2 and I love it, but it can be very fiddly. The Mosaic team is very helpful and the Facebook group is s great source of information. Mosaic's Canvas slicer still needs a lot of work though. I've seen people doing side transitions to eliminate the purge block or even creating a purge item when printing multiples of the same item. Other slicers handle that better than Canvas. Like you, I had huge troubles getting it to work with my Ender 3. I switched over to my heavily modified Anet A8 and it is working much better. I'm going to be converting my Ender to a direct drive using a Zesty Nimble as soon as it arrives, among other updates, which hopefully will make it work much better.

    The error looks totally random, like it's using the model as the purge block. You would think through the eye you would get a similar fault past it on each layer, but each layer is different. It's like the scaling and sync between the two is totally out, or something is producing noise in the line that makes the P2 pick random colours. Maybe it needs a filter on the mains or any connection between the two.

  • @bjdchwr
    @bjdchwr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    After a couple of months of ownership of Palette 2 Pro. I have to say the Palette relies on the accuracy of the extruder heavily. The bondtech gear for MK3 is the crucial part for accuracy prints.
    This might explain why MK3 performs better than CR10/Ender, as a lot of printers still use Bowden extrusion methods which has the inconsistent drive for the filament.
    In their FB group someone complained about the CR10 with Palette 2 combo, but most of the MK3 users are happy.
    Also SD card method is not the recommended way for the print as the ping and pong (communication/sync) are dependent on short pauses for the printer. Octoprint works better and it acts as a bi-directional agent during the print.
    Overall I am quite happy about Palette 2 but I really wish they can do more colors, like MMU2S can do 5 :-)

    RE: 12:06 Until now I've never been able to get it to work reliably on anything but direct drive printers (Prusa, MakerGear, etc), well it works perfectly on my Crealities and AnyCubics only if I print at constant speed and never retract. My current hypothesis is that the varying pressure in the Bowden (from all the retractions and speed changes) causes the misalignments (confuses the Pings and Pongs). On my Prusas and Makergears large and tall prints come out flawless. My favourite feature is the multi spool function for doing super large prints (2-3Kg) on my CR10Max, and joining all those left over bits of filament.

  • @daviddavidson2357
    @daviddavidson2357 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's probably gotten better over the years, I'd hope at least. It's a great idea, though it seems to waste too much filament and fail too much.
    A direct drive extruder that could do all of this would probably waste a lot less filament. I've a few off the cuff ideas on how that could work (linear motors and a hot motorized knife to angle a tube between 3-4 pieces of filament and a retraction system that pulls out most of the filament in the hot end before cutting, ejecting (no need to turn waste time turning filament into a block, just move the extruder, retract, cut and eject into a waste bin cold, without extruding) and switching) but I'd need to draw them up and see if they would actually work. Multiple extruders seem to be the best option though.

    I'm sure some people have a use case for this but I cant see spending that kind of money that will just waste huge amounts of filament and add unnecessary complexity to get 4 colors. Far more impressive work could be done with $500 in paint and post processing the single color print. Shoot you could pay someone quite a bit to paint models for you before you got to that kind of money with just 4 colors. REALLY appreciate you doing this video it certainly points out this technology is not ready for prime time. Very impressive technology though.

  • @Hroubert
    @Hroubert 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should have clarified, the purge block varies depending on amount of color changes and height of the model, so the comparison of "the purge block is heavier than the print" is deceiving.
    When printing something small with many changes it is quite wasteful, but if you're printing a bigger model, or many models at the same time, the purge block remains the same and it's all more efficient.
    Other than that, thanks for your review, and hope you solve the remaining issues soon

    I believe the future is in print heads which get white filament in and then add colors from ink tanks to the molten material just above the nozzle. This allows for unlimited colors, gradients and creates no waste if calibrated correctly.

    • @scottjackson2812
      @scottjackson2812 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MetalheadAndNerd like the DaVinci color? The 3D printing professor has one of those. It looks promising but the colors are a bit faded. I hope they improve upon it, because it’s pretty cool. The biggest advantage to using multiple filaments though is deeper and more vibrant colors that go throughout the material so that they can be finished. I think though that we’re gonna see people moving away from single hotends for multi-material. Too much waste and it doesn’t really save much money on hardware. If the prusa mmu is 300 and this thing is twice that, then IDEX and tool changers aren’t really that expensive when you think about it. I think that’s really where multi-material is going.

    • @MetalheadAndNerd
      @MetalheadAndNerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottjackson2812 Maybe it could also be an option to have a color ink jet unit next to the nozzle and spray the color the moment the material leaves the nozzle. This would only be superficial but all mixing issues were avoided.

    • @viet0ne
      @viet0ne 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That kind of tech would be much more failure prone because you cant simply take white filament and add dye near the nozzle, you need to melt and mix the plastic and dye to get a uniform color.
      So essentially you would have the same issue here which would be a box that creates multi colored filament that feeds to the print head.
      Either way, you would still need a purge solution because of the residual plastic that gets stuck in the filament path of the hot end.

    • @MetalheadAndNerd
      @MetalheadAndNerd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@viet0ne The shorter the mixer path is the less purging is necessary. The slicer could user this material for infill.

    • @viet0ne
      @viet0ne 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MetalheadAndNerd it wouldn't reduce purging because the residual plastic is primarily because of the melted plastic in the print head.
      I would argue that a mixing and melting of plastic and dye at the hot end would force even more purging because you would be purging residual dye instead of just residual plastic.
      And the video already addressed that you can enable options to purge in infil instead of the purge block.

    If you're in Australia, with the poor Australian dollar and the shipping amount, it almost doubles the cost and I don't know about anyone else but my budget doesn't stretch that far. Plus the fact that from Michael's experience it seems a bit flaky still. Would be great if they were a few hundred dollars cheaper and easier and more reliable to use.

    In theory, shouldn't the fusing of filaments not require purge blocks? One would think that through the software it should know exactly how much filament is needed between color changes. Ultimately the printer would then not care and just print thinking it is just a single filament once everything is dialed in. Seems like an expensive option given that it still requires printing large purge blocks.

    I love the concept but those purge blocks are a dealbreaker. The printers with the tool changers aren't that much more then a printer plus the pallet. Add in the waste material and over time it's much cheaper.
    You might be better off with the pallet over multihead printers though because you don't lose the build space.
    It's got potential but it's just not ready for prime yet.

    I really like this product but the amount of wasted filament really adds to the cost. You essentially have to figure you will use up as much or more filament than for your actual print. It's a great product but the cost and bugs is a hard no for now. Thanks for making a honest effort in trying to get it to work rather than just write it off as a buggy product. The stripped effects on the cases were VERY cool, but I would most likely airbrush any prints I made then it would be a waste for me right now. If it got to the $300 I might seriously consider it.
