    M. Night Shyamalan brings us a thriller with an interesting premise; a serial killer trying to escape a concert, which is actually a trap....does the execution do the premise justice? Here's my review for TRAP!

    the most unbelievable thing to me is that Lady Raven would be willing to risk her own life for a stranger on his phone. That's far fetched that a Mega star would let a serial killer go through with her past the cops into her car and put herself at risk rather than not snitching on him there and then LOL. Surely if she told the cops they would of been able to have find the guy he had kidnapped. Furthermore the cops had no idea what The Butcher looked like so it would of made more sense for him to just go through the police search and more likely he would of been able to finesse his way out of it rather then exposing his identity to Lady Raven, that was truly idiotic.

    There was one scene that had me completely confused that i thought would be explained later in the movie but never was. Its when Cooper went into the employee room where a swat team was grouped up listening to the leader talk about how imperitive it is to find the butcher, and he starts passing through them, saying to them that hes just trying to get some coffee, but the coffee area was around the corner and through a big group of people from where he was when he said it, so i have no idea how he knew there was going to be a coffee machine right there. Then, one of the swat guys asks cooper where they keep the sugar. He makes up that one of the other employees was supposed to restock it, so he gets in a cabinet underneath and immediately pulls out the sugar without having to look for it for even a second or check any other cabinets, it was in the first one he opened, and he refers to it as "his own stash". It just felt like he knew exactly where both the coffee station and the sugar were without ever seeing them before. I thought we were gonna learn that Cooper had been in that room before for whatever reason, like he broke in some time before the concert and set up contingincy plans to escape the arena because he knew there was going to be a trap or something like that, but it was just never explained.
    Also another scene that bugged me was when Cooper went to the Shake Shack or whatever it was, went behind the counter, somehow walked up to the friers (which were right behind the counter where everyone could see them), picks up two big glass bottles of canola oil (which, again, were also right behind the counter in plain view of the employees and customers), puts the full bottles into the frier without it seeming to affect the level of the oil that was already in there, turns up the temp on the frier, and walks out without a single person seeing him do any of this. It isnt shown or explained how he gets away with this, nor does it address the fact that he would have been caught in plain view on the security cameras, which police would have absolutely watched considering someone got severly hurt from the incident. Theyre gonna wanna look and see how two full unopened bottles of oil ended up in there. Why the FBI didnt immediatly go back and watch the footage to see what happened and who did it is beyond me. The head fbi lady even said that the butcher would try to use chaos as a distraction, but they never go back and look at who caused that particular chaotic distraction.

    • @shinycheeto5779
      @shinycheeto5779 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      Lol yeah those moments definitely took the biggest suspension of disbelief. The concept itself is silly so I just went with it.
      None of it really stands up to scrutiny. He just happened to talk to Lady Raven’s Uncle. Nobody saw him push lady down stairs. Couldn’t the cops find out what seats they were in by the receipt? At the very least what section based on price?

    • @ianhershberger6376

    • @ianhershberger6376
      @ianhershberger6376 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As far as the first one goes, he was winging it. It’s exactly what you see. Cooper’s a psychopath who plans murders. He didn’t know the coffee was there, he saw it as he began walking through. He was looking for a way out, information, anything and this happened to be what he stumbled upon. It was a risk undoubtedly, but a calculated one. The best place to hide is in plain sight. Any SWAT officer in the group who sees him in the future now goes “hey I saw that guy directly walk by us without a care in the world, he’s not suspicious”. And in almost every office/coffee station in the US atleast - sugar, cutlery etc. is stored in a lower cabinet.

      Why let Lady Raven escape the limo?? He could lock the doors from the front, drive off, ANYTHING but sit there reactionless.

They come up with a great concept, intriguing trailers that make you want to see it, a banger first half of the film... and then the ending falls flat. Here are several inconsistencies and unanswered questions I noticed in the movie. Perhaps you can make another video addressing these: (1) WHY is Cooper taking his daughter to a concert and leaving his wife and son at home? Wouldn't they all want to go to the concert together? (2) If police were tipped off by Cooper's wife, WHY didn't she give her name, address, etc? (3) If police knew the killer would be there, why not check people as they come in instead of on the way out? (4) If police found ticket receipt, couldn't they find out their seat location? (5) If Cooper's wife drugged him with the pie, why did the drugs have no affect, and allow him to keep going? Did the tazers neutralize the drug? (6) How could the police not notice Cooper removing the bike spoke and how could he remove the spoke so easily?

      1) i think he only took the daughter because they had really good seats and it would be too pricey to take the whole family 2) since she did realize he was the butcher, im sure she realized her life would be in danger if she was the one who ratted him out since he has gotten away with 12 murders 3) i dont think the police knew he was going to the concert with someone, so in their eyes they believed if he saw the cop cars and everything he would turn and go away. Not knowing he was brining his daughter. 4) probably ripped just to see the name of the concert , nothing more because then possibly her daughter would be in danger? 5) i think since they are his medication maybe he just has a higher tolerance ? and it seemed she didn’t put too much just sprinkled on the bottom which there was enough to where he could slip his fingers through it and leave a mark 6) they wanted him alive not dead, so im guessing when he moved the bike it just seemed like it was his OCD acting out. Idk about any of this these are just what i was thinking 😂😊

      As far as number 3 goes, it’s explained that all she found was his planning house there was no bodies, no blood, nothing. So she didn’t actually KNOW what the house was for. She ripped the ticket in half, obviously ripping the part with their seats on it. She presumed he was some kind of killer, so she left the ticket there and reported it, so that when the cops found it they would investigate and either prove him innocent or catch him.

    But I agree with what you said about the dialogue not feeling natural. Characters giving random information away that is SUPER CONVENIENT for Josh Harnett’s character was SUPER video game-y
    Also, the singer being the focal point of the third act instead of the profiler did smell of M. Night saying “I’m the director, my daughter gets to be the hero!”

    I root for M. Night, even tho he isn't my jam anymore. This is an example of what I'd call an old school "event" movie. It has hyped itself up so much because it's made to be seen with groups of people. When people enter a theater from a trusted director, they know they're in for a good time, and they get to experience that together. M. Night is one of the few people still doing this. As for the type of movies, I could only compare him to Jordan Peele. Anyway, I like M. Night, and I think audiences will pretty much love this, so I think with this movie, he's finally going to shake off his reputation of being a semi-competent, hit-and-miss director. Finally, his name is now a draw again. He has fulfilled his high of being at the top of the game again.
    He's been making movies for the masses for some time now, but at some point, his filmmaking is going to get more personal again. So I just wonder what we'll see at that point.

    This is excellent, put yourself into that mindset, this guy is completely detached from humanity, he emulates how the people around him are acting. We're seeing through his lense, people seem fake. So he's acting as he sees people. I loved this movie and think it will become more appreciated over time. Even seeing how this guy slips through the cracks, shows how resourceful he is. It has happened in real life like that before. I loved the end of the movie - possibilities of a sequel.

    I loved this movie, except for Salkeka, I didn't like the part where she went into acting mode. god bless our man Josh Hartnett.

    It feels like several of the M. Night movies get halfway to great and then spin out of control. Thought exercise: Name a director who could mentor/team up with him to wrestle these almost-there movies to the finish line.
    There are probably many directions this could go, but I'll start with a wilder one in Wes Anderson. A successful director who also has dialogue that sounds stilted but somehow works. Wes also has movies that break through into the absurd but again somehow still work. It could also be the introduction of Wes Anderson into Thriller/Horror!

    Here is my take on M. Night Shyamalan movies; the only one I have seen more than once is signs. Trap sounds like a one watch movie as well, if that. Shyamalan movies always start off interesting and then blow it. How he gets to keep making movies is beyond me.

    The problem with a serial killer trying to act natural but actually was not (like what you said about Josh's character) was that he would have been recognized by people as a bit off, which would be bad on a day when people were looking for someone that did not act normal. A true criminal would have learned to blend in and hide himself, and not attract attention by questions about what was happening, stealing cell phone and identity card, asking for the password, and even saying his daughter had leukemia just as a way to get backstage. The last was obviously written into the script deliberately so as to be able to prolong Saleka's singing and performance and even gave her the chance to have a long sing and dance along with a preteen girl.

    The part I still find to extremely dumb is also part in the trailer, where the employee exposition dumps the whole plan that is supposed to be TOP SECRET.

    • @noobofalltrades9766
      @noobofalltrades9766 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      not really, normal people tend to slip up more than you think. That's why most of the time misdirection is needed for something like that to work. But I agree with Jeremy's take on this though, Josh carried the whole film. The acting of the other parts, save maybe his wife, were stiff.

    • @batmanvsuperman_
      @batmanvsuperman_ หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It made zero sense in the trailer .. in the film tho he showed he was a good person at heart, employee is really sensitive to seeing kindess in the world, so he let his guard down cause "well this guy is an upstanding gentlemen"

      That's what I thought was the craziest part of the movie. Why is this merch guy disclosing this much info to someone who could potentially be the serial kill3r? Even after Hartnett's character told him that he was a Fire Marshal, the merch guy doesn't ask to see a badge or ID proving that? I literally got a kick out of how many bad decisions the other characters made in the movie.

    • @MrGlostuber
      @MrGlostuber หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The thing grinding my gears the most, is that Josh Harnett would put the earpiece in perfectly at a time to hear from start to finish, the information he needs to hear to make the next decision.

  • @Cybershroom

    Honestly, the main actor carried the movie, Josh Hartnett is really good in the few films that I've seen him in and this is no different. Was the movie spectacular? Nah, was it entertaining? Yeah It was, maybe not much of a thriller as I hoped for, but it was rather different.

    So John Rocha was saying that they apparently didn't screen this to ANYONE except people doing immediate press for the movie because it had such a massive twist... I think that kinda warped my expectations a bit but overall I enjoyed the movie. Like you said the first act is definitely SUPER strong and the rest feels weaker, but overall incredible performance from Josh Hartnett. Shymalan does do a REALLY good job getting great performances out of actors IMO between this, Split, and Knock at the Cabin.
