    Josh Hartnett is the best part about this movie. He is charismatic, and has such a sweet relationship with his daughter, and you find yourself rooting for him, despite him being the clear baddie. It reminds me of "You", and Penn Badgley.

      How exactly did the film portray this guy as charismatic and a “sweet relationship” with his daughter, by purchasing floor tickets….my man was literally not present during the concert and was acting weird/strange around her. Encouraging her to miss concert and instead explore the underground. Charismatic? My man got no social skills as evident by Shyamalan’s style. Maybe his ability isn’t exactly teleportation, but rather having the ability to escape from any trap that he’s faced with. Throughout the movie, at least for me, I was always on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what he would do next to escape. The concert, the tunnel in the closet, and escaping the limo I thought were really cool. And even at the end of the movie he escapees again, which gives us, the audience, the impression that this guy will always escape. He’ll always find a way to escape anything presented to him, I found myself rooting for him almost the whole movie as well lol.
      Overall I really enjoyed this movie, I personally love suspense ‘on the edge of your seat’ movies even if they’re a little dumb at times. Josh’s character still doesn’t make sense to me and neither does the plot or what actually happened, but that’s what I love about it. I love movies that have me thinking and reading 100s of theories after I see them haha.

      He has already compromised himself by letting Lady Raven take charge of the situation. Coopers character is mentally challenged at best for letting any of the events unfold. We had no character set up, no back story but an implication of a back story hinted at by the short exchange in his garage. What is crazy is that the FBI has no real evidence on him and without any evidence, how do they know for a fact that it's him?. Poorly executed scene after poorly executed scene. The character tells extremely dumb lies to his daughter and only later does he come up with decent excuses which by this time, his daughter knows he is acting weird. Poor dialogue, poor plot, poor side characters who are almost meme like in their nature. Hell, we got more backstory about how his daughter had a falling out with some of her school friends which generates more brief npc dialogue but creates doesn't develop characters or story. The way his daughter turns into a npc so he can slink away to push a girl down some stairs... And lets not forget, The FBI creating a fake concert to potentially trap one serial killer, by employing hundreds of officers, only to leave him unsupervised in the back of the truck. Not a single aspect of this movies make sense until you realize Saleka is M nights daughter

    • @Alicetheamethyst
      @Alicetheamethyst 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @eltavish the daughter would never suspect her father, and I think it's more a boomer/gen x trait to gaslight their children enough not to really question them, BUT his daughter turning into a npc after she finds out is ridiculous as she seems so attached to her father.

    The vibe of the dialogue being off in this M Night movie makes a ton of sense because Hartnett’s character is tiptoeing the line between being an awkward dad and sociopathic serial killer. Of course he sounds goofy, says and does weird/nonsensical things. Have you ever met a dad of a teenage daughter?! 90% of them say the most batsh!t crazy things to try to sound cool in front of their daughter.

    Might have been said before me but "Old" is actually an adaptation of a 2011 French graphic novel. So not OC by Shyamalan but he does have a knack for picking interesting ideas. I kinda feel like he is to movies what Stephen King is to books (in a way).

    I've seen people complain a lot about this film, but I loved it. It does have some plot holes/illogical turns, but it's so brilliantly casted and well written otherwise, that it didn't bother me too much. Like you mention, it also seems to have been done on purpose, to create comedy/a way into another great scene. I also really appreciate that tween girls are not written in a derogatory way in this film (as so often in society in general) - they are explored as real people, resourceful and funny. That they created a teen pop star and a concept for a concert that emulated fandom/concerts/real pop stars, was very true to life, imo.

    I have two main issues with this movie. the first is that we never see him kill or really see his victims, crimes, and actions. I just don’t believe this guy is a killer it doesn’t feel earned when he gets caught because it doesn’t feel like a win. if anything I honestly feel sad that he won’t get to see his daughter again.
    my second issue is the amount of people crowding every area of this arena at all times during an active concert. have these people ever been to a concert? do they understand once the show starts most people are PLANTED? why are the halls constantly crowded and everyone seemingly taking crowd intermissions? how can all the seats be full when half the crowd is roaming the halls? the last time I left my seat during a concert in an arena like that I got from the very last row down to the empty women’s bathroom and got my ass all the way back up before the song even ended those halls were a WASTELAND

    I just watched this movie today and I love it. I don't know why so many people were giving bad reviews. And contrary to popular opinion, I actually enjoyed the second half of the film more than the first half. The concert kinda made me cringe. The music was great though. Yes, Josh had to carry this film and he did an amazing job, but him having to carry the film doesn't make it a bad film. He actually made this film good. His ability to act as a convincing psychopath was bone chilling. His calm and cool attitude, and that smile... He should get an award for his role in this film. He did say he studied the Hare Psychopathy Checklist and damn it shows.
    As for "The music wasn't great", i would've thought so too if I only heard the music in the film, but I listened to the actual album and for an artist that I've never heard of, she is incredibly talented as a composer/songwriter/and vocalist. There are some really interesting instrumental pieces in songs like "Save Me" with the trombones or trumpets. The arrangements were good.

    LOVED this - SO MUCH fun - felt like M Night Shyamalan channeling a batshit campy 90s Thriller in THE MOST entertaining & stupid & fun ways~
    My best description I can think of to capture this thing would be calling it a combo of Brian De Palma's "Snake Eyes" and John Waters' "Serial Mom" - precision filmmaking in a claustrophobic thriller in a large public location (i.e. Sports arena), before descending into a twist-after-twist-after-twist cat-and-mouse Psychological Thriller in the 3rd act
    Karsten put it perfectly in here - if you think about the film's logic for even 30 SECONDS, it falls apart - but I was simply too busy having FUN with this thing to care~

    I think everything Shyamalan is doing here is completely intentional and it works brilliantly. Hartnett absolutely makes this movie, his performance is so intrinsic with the film. Everything about the film has this awkward, uncomfortable energy, it puts us right in the headspace of the killer so that even though he's a little underdeveloped, we still feel close and the story becomes far more personal. It almost makes you root for the killer even though realistic we should want him to get caught. We need more of this Shyamalan, he's at his best when he takes a simple premise and injects his signature style into it and not solely trying to just one up the audience at every turn.

It seemed to me that it all played like myth or a tale, where all the little parts don't add up and has that thin dream-like atmosphere, but it's larger than the sum of its parts. It is really goofy and funny, but also works on an emotional level. I was quite surprised at the depth of the Butcher's psyche they went through the trouble of displaying at the end.

    The word you’re looking for is camp. Night has written a thriller cat and mouse game and written it out of the box! His protagonist is also the antagonist, a serial killer so inventive and so charming we are actually rooting for him to escape lol The preposterous premise, the wild improbabilities, Josh Hartnett’s exaggerated flexible facial expressions, his body tics, the over the top dialogue, c’mon, some scenes are just hilarious. In interviews Night and Hartnett hoped the audience would take a fun ride and hubby and I did. We watched it twice just to see the bits we missed on first watch. Yep, there are flaws. Lazy editing, the terrible miscasting of his talented singing daughter into a speaking role, the overuse of the concert footage. But on a whole, a fun movie!
