Omg!!!! The callback to Varric’s intro in DA2 with the shot that pinned the lady up against the wall! 😭 I love it. Immediately made me think of Hawke. 🥺
That the game explicitly describes what conclusions it is drawing about the options you choose is a massive improvement over the DA2/Mass Effect dialogue systems.
I hope that keeps happening all game, and isn't just a tutorial feature.
I like how Rook has a more common accent, unlike Hawke and the inquisitor who have REALLY posh accents.
Even the title of ‘Rook’ this time around is so charming. I can’t wait 😂😮💨

That was a really good hook. Varric's narration, and moving into that opening scene. Definitely makes it seem like we're hitting the ground running.

I have to say, there's so much variety in the music yet it all fits really well with the vibe of the game! so excited to play it
Does the game give you anything to help explain how Rook became Varric's 2nd in command? Like a codex entry or a flashback? While I love the energy and graphics in this scene, it doesn't do much to set up the PC's motivations for joining in on this fight, and being so high up the chain of command to boot.
You took the words out my mouth, why is this rando (that we are ment to be playing as) his second in command when him and Harding have known each other over a decade at this point? Seems so undeserved, especially when the inquisitor feels so much more intrinsically a part of this story
It's explained in the Background cards.
@cmdr.jabozerstorer3968 where is it explained in the background cards? I've read them, and nowhere does it say how Rook met Varric. They say why you're laying low in your faction because you saved some people and pissed off others.
@@NoodlesDaCat I think it's safe to assume how they met from those backgrounds and the ending of Inquisition - Rook stood out to Varric after the big thing you do in your background and we know the Inquisition is using people that they think are notable/skilled to stop Solas. The same way we are "collecting" people in the world, Varric "collected" us. I bet we will also see in the game when we play it ourselves what our relationship to varric is, similar to how its been done in the past - through stories, cutscenes, etc
Rook kinda gives me Commander Shepard vibes.

Alex Jordan will absolutely be the voice for my Rook but its so great to see that every voice has absolutely STELLAR performance backing it!
Fingers crossed Varric survives this game. His narration is peak as always.
The idea going around is that Varric doesn't die, he's just out of the story, like Hawke.

I can't believe how incredible the cutscenes look in the game so far!!! Gone are the stiff-limbed animations I remember so fondly from Inquisition lol. I mean, look at how Rook holds that cup handle!!!

This intro looks really amazing- I do kind of hope the fight is different depending on your class. Like imagining a mage doing this beat down is a little funny
I can't place the female rook's accent. At times I think Northern England, but other times it sounds like someone from abroad who has lived in the UK a really long time

At this point they’ve been friends and colleagues for over a decade, I know this is our player character, but my immediate reaction is like yeah but who the fuck are you? 😂 I’m know we getting our inquisitor appearing in this one but after the ending of trespasser so long ago I’ve always felt gutted that we just playing as some rando that should be them.
i’m so sad to say but Varric’s narration is really giving Flynn Rider’s “this is the story of how i died” opening in Tangled. it feels much more tired than in DA2, like he’s more mournful and less reminiscent. 🥲
Most likely, Varric doesn't die, he's just taken out of the story. Like Hawke.

I really hope the bar fight scene changes depending on your class because I do not wanna see my mage Rook from the mourn watch smashing bottles over peoples heads. Idk. I just don’t feel it fits.

What is the significance of "Purple Rook"?
“purple Hawke” was what fans called a Hawke player character in Dragon Age 2 that primarily chose the sarcastic dialogue options (the laughing mask looking one), and it was shaded purple in DA2. everybody loves sarcastic or “purple” Hawke, so we’re excited to see the return of the symbol and super sarcastic quips in Veilguard for Rook :)
The usual dialogue choice done by the players that later affect how Hawke usually speaks, in DA 2.
Red Hawke is aggressive. Blue Hawke is Diplomatic. Purple is Sarcastic.
Rook in this is the protagonist, and its believed that it'll follow the same rules as DA 2. If you do enough Purple dialogue options, Rook would end up being more sarcastic.

This opening is just any dungeons and dragons campaign, the story begins at a bar with adventurers discussing their next great adventure.

WHY is the character called Rook?
It's a nickname. They have their own real name that depends on the background. The rook is one of the most powerful pieces in chess. It has the ability to force a checkmate to an enemy king without the assistance of other pieces. Basically, Rook is called Rook because of their great value to this mission and also probably because they like to act very straightforward (Rooks can move only in straight lines)

The intro is cool I guess, but playing as a mage and seeing your rook use stools and punches to win a fight kinda breaks the immersion/fantasy. Why would a mage use physical combat over magical?

The elf has a dwarf build, lol.
Elves are canonically shorter than humans in this universe + This is the body build the creator has chosen for her character, you can make your elf slimmer if it bothers you so.
@grinstrashcan elves are also supposed to be really skinny in this universe.

I really, really dislike the amount of talking Rook does on their own. It makes me feel like I’m playing a pre-made character like in the Witcher games rather than making my own
