  • NEW DELHI: On June 15, 2020, Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Galwan Valley of Eastern Ladakh. Twenty Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese troops lost their lives in the first such incident involving the two armies along the Line of Actual Control in decades. The Chinese have acknowledged four deaths but reports suggest the casualties could be around 40. The incident brought about a host of military changes in the way India guards its northern frontier and also in India-China bilateral relations as StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale explains in this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’.

StratNewsGlobal is a very important channel and can be considered an intelligence content platform which can create the next great doyen of Indian military. Contextualising such an important event in the history of modern Asia, is so crucial for building intelligence capabilities of the country. Kudos to you.
Remembrance for the great Amar Jawans who sacrificed their lives to protect this great country that is Bharat. May their loved ones heal from their losses. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
General Naravne took a decision that impacted the whole world and showed thay the PLA is nothing but a paper tiger.
Galwan can be considered as an inflection point not for India and China but for the world. This was an event which changed the balance of power posturing in cold war 2.0.

The problem in Kargil arose when we had vacated the heights in winter. Depsang happened because we were not present there and the Chinese walked in. Food for thought.

Both Pakistan & China are treacherous & India must remain one step ahead of them. Simla Agreement had defined inviolability of LoC & the Kargil heights were left vacant since 1972 but Pakistan broke that agreement. Its international image has nosedived since then as its PM Nawaz Sharif had to rush to the US & beg Clinton for help.
China infiltrated Ladakh during height of Covid crisis under guise of routine annual exercises during which it also launched annual naval exercises in South China Sea when the US Pacific Fleet was grounded because of Coronavirus infection. China then infiltrated SCS too. It is paying heavy price now with West economically delinking from China & enhancing military presence in SCS. Upgraded QUAD, AUKUS, I2U2 are the outcomes of Chinese treachery.

After the doklam crisis in 2017, china reorganised tibetan army facing india and regularly conducted large scale live firing army exercise at tibetan plateau.
The tibetan army command has a force of roughly 250,000 men.
In 2020, as usual this force after the annual army exercise near indian border rushed with weapons some 15-20 km deep inside unguarded indian territory.
Till now they refuse to budge from occupied indian territory despite many rounds of negotiations

Nehru’s governnment only realised chinese had built a motorable highway cut across Aksai Chin after few years later.
There after he dropped indian troops all along the tibetan border to stop the chinese from advancing further. But the isolated indian soldiers with little access to ammunition, food, warm clothers , modern weapons, tents were easily routed by chinese.

After penetrating some 15-20 km inside ladakh and sitting comfortably , the chinese are now demanding to create buffer zone inside indian territories.
Chinese wanted the 15 km deep indian area they occupied as buffer zone on their side and asking the indian side to move away another 15 km behind creating 30 km buffer zone in total . Which means if indian authorities agree to chinese proposal, indian army will be 30 km away from the border instead of curreent 15 km distance from LAC.

The chinese can easily raise their strenght from current 50,000 troops to any where 200,000-300,000 in all out war.

Why is China contesting the LAC??? It is ridiculous in terms of any economic benefit China could get. China could easily over-run Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar for greater benefit, but it does not. It could take North Korea, but it does not. The PLA's three branches rotate tens of thousands of troops to the borders with neighbours who are best armed - India and Taiwan. What China needs is for its troops to learn and be prepared to take very cold land and marine environments. It appears what China mainly wants is Siberia - Russia took it over the last 400 years due to China's weakness - China calls it the Great Humiliation. China recently reissued its maps of Siberia with Chinese place names. Siberia is 13 million square kilometres - 3/4 of the Russian Federation. Most of the Siberia population is near the Urals. Siberian trade is effectively done with China - many many Chinese business people are present in Siberia to facilitate the trade.
Russia destabilized in 1991, but China was not prepared. China looks for destabilization in Russia that it might stabilise in Siberia and never go home. Taking most of Siberia would make China a land of at least 20 million kilometres squared. Mongolia has 4 million people who would barely notice China moved through its country to take Siberia only to discover the Chinese were staying in their country too. Operations going well in Siberia would have China taking most of North Korea and especially its nuclear weapons - China wants coast line due to the value of the marine environment. The most important resource Siberia has is water of which northern China is short - China could green its deserts. Eastern Central Asia has more water than western China - we should expect a large Chinese incursion into eastern Central Asia to take Siberia that never goes home. With operations in the north and east going well, China would take as much of Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar as they could until they met Indian troops. They would surely intrude into Laos until they met Vietnamese and Thai troops. China would love a border with Bangladesh for direct trade, and its own land and port on the Indian Ocean - thus China must want northern Myanmar. Myanmar is plenty destabilized, Russia could easily be destabilised by the Ukraine war.
China would buy-off the West by giving the southern third of North Korea, which has half the people, to South Korea. It would give money incentives for the other half of the North Korean population to move south - a move the west would welcome. It would return to Japan the islands Russia has never returned. In all, China could seek to be a country of about 1420m to 1450m people after Russians, Koreans and some people from Central Asia left the lands conquered by China. The internal market boost to China would be incredible. Having increased its territory 2 to 2.5 times, China would quickly settle South China Sea claims by accepting boundaries complying with UN rules - the UN has already made a ruling. As with Ukraine, the West would be very happy Russia was even further diminished. That would leave the question of Taiwan, which would be less important to China, to another time. In the short term China would be a good neighbour to Taiwan. A China of over 25 million square km and 1420 million people can afford to be a good neighbour.
Part of the price China will have paid for its new lands is India also becoming a superpower. I think China would welcome that - a world of blocks is easy going for superpowers. China's neighbours would be Japan, Korea, Vietnam, possibly Thailand, Southern Myanmar, possibly Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan (but China would take the Wakhan corridor as it is a trade barrier), Tajikistan, Uzbekistan (currently 250 km from China), Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and the US in the Bering Sea (the US would take Big Diomede and Islands in the Aleutian Islands including Bering Island). Perhaps the US would assist Japan to take all the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin Island and perhaps the Kamchatka Peninsula. China would only front significant democratic countries in mountains and across seas - democracy is unlikely to bleed across its borders. 13 to 15 direct neighbours - great for trade.
From India's perspective, preventing China from taking Nepal, Bhutan, Northern Myanmar, getting a border with Bangladesh (not a militarily strong country), and getting a land link to a port on the Indian Ocean is what India must plan for. India must plan to seize the Kaladan River Valley and the port of Sittwe, and ensure the Myanmar democratic forces defeat the Generals once and for all. India needs rapid action forces in Mizoram, West Bengal and Odisha that can prevent Chinese forces reaching the Indian Ocean by blocking their way.

Initially Modi government was just like his previous indian leaders was slow in developing infrastructure and slow in building up forces along the china front.
Modi just like his previous indian leaders told the army to just focus in kashmir fighting the pakistan funded and trained terrorists in kashmir .
Proposal by the indian army to develop more mountain strike forces was delayed and shelved by Modi citing lack of funds. But modi spent government money USD 400 million to build patel statue in gujarat.
Only in the last 3 years, after the violent clash and killings of indian troops , Modi government wake up from sleep rushing troops and started infrastructurs along China border which should have started when he become PM in 2014

History will remember Galwan like it remebers the franco-prussian war of 1873 and is likely to have the same impact on the relationship as happened then. Initiate a period of antagonistic relation where outright war is prevented only due to balance of power and weakness of one party(india). Once this changes in coming decades a strong sino-indian breakdown is a possibility which cannot be ignored.

All of this was to deflect Indian attention away from her naval investments to divert resources to the land border…What does that achieve? The Chinese navy uses that time to further build its capability to an extent that it offsets any advantages the Indian navy might’ve had….this also means that now the Chinese navy only needs to worry about only one adversary in the indo-pacific region i.e. the US Navy….Sun Tzu’s quote ‘Fight the enemy where they aren’t’ applies aptly in this whole saga…..
