I like this and I will continue learning my favourite language, Portuguese, with you. I already speak Italian and it is quite similar in the lexical layer, just the phonetics are bit different :)

I absolutely loved this video! Thank you Maria! I’m Portuguese (but originally from Hawaii) and I’ve been so excited to start my journey to learn the language. My grandma would speak a little here and there but I never learned it. After a month on Duolingo, I learned from a friend how different European vs Brazilian Portuguese is! I’m happy I found your channel and love the way you teach here. :0)

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I started a pretty good Portuguese course online, but their philosophy was just to listen, look, and learn, but I could barely tell the difference between certain sounds and wasn't quite sure what the rules were for vowel and consonant phonetics. It was super confusing, since I had assumed it would be just like Spanish, which I had studied in the past. You really need to understand some basic phonetics ... the spelling and pronunciation....before you delve into these other lessons. Otherwise, you aren't really sure of what you're hearing or how to replicate it! Wonderful youtube! Highly recommend it.

Interesting. There are some notable differences between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. In Brazil, “k” is pronounced /ka/ instead of /kapa/. And the vowel sounds as in “elefante”, “chocolate” and “português” seem to be more phonetic in Brazil than in Portugal. In other words, we don’t change “e” to /i/ or “o” to /u/ in these words, except the unstressed final “e” of “elefante". Vive la difference!
