    For anyone learning a new language and getting frustrated by what you see as a lack of progress: I was in Paris before the pandemic shut everything down. Hung out with a French friend, went to a party where I listened to her have a conversation in French with two other people. I didn’t catch everything they said but I *understood* enough to know they were talking business and she was giving them advice. They kept turning to me to apologize about not including me but I was more than happy listening in and realizing I understood more than I thought I would. Understanding is the first step! Keep going in whatever endeavor you’re taking on.

    I've always thought the most important part in learning a language (or anything really) is actually taking the first step. It doesn't have to be boring or technical, once you have a small basis it gets a lot more fun, cause language is always cultural and once you get to that, there is no stopping the learning process. Loved this video!

    A quick recap
    Step 0: *Finding Your Mission*
    - list down your reasons for learning a language
    Step 1: *Gathering the Building Blocks*
    - get to the core of the most common conversational vocabulary
    Step 2: *The Glue*
    - time to make sentences and entire ideas! (i.e. conjugations, verbs, and tenses)
    Step 3: *Enter the Bubble*
    - enter the [language youre learning]-speaking world and their culture to learn how they speak the language
    Wishing all of the people here that's currently trying to learn a language well! Personally trying to learn Spanish right now ❤

    I have a feeling that this video may go viral here in Brazil, it's a part of our culture to behave positively when we talk/see foreigners trying to speak Portuguese (sometimes it's a little overwhelming 🤣). Wish you good luck in your journey dude. I'm learning Spanish right now and what I realized is that we, as Portuguese speakers, can understand what Spanish speakers say, but they can't understand us most of the time, so I suppose that we mess the pronunciation up 100% haha. I'm really excited to check out the next videos, pls keep up the good work.

    As a Brazilian, I feel so humbled that you took the time to learn our language.
    As a language learner myself, I always keep thinking about how foreigners would learn Portuguese, and the amount of ambiguities that our language has. For instance, some years ago, the "trema" (umlaut) was abolished, and so it became frustratingly hard to know when "gue/que" is pronounced as in "guerra (guerra)" or as in "pinguim (pingüim)"... so yeah, sorry about that; I myself only learned to appreciate it when I learned Spanish and saw why it even existed in the first place.
    Also, I really feel like Portuguese is one of the hardest languages to really appear as a native while speaking it. Maybe it's because people usually just try to be cool and use a lot of slangs (if unsure, use them sparingly!); I don't know. Maybe I'm just guilty of it being my mother-language!
    Anyway, there is a lot of great things in Portuguese: there are many video-essay channels popping up these days (Mimimidias, Quebrando a Caixa, Ludoviajante, just to name a few), many great bands (classics like Legião Urbana, Titãs, etc etc the list goes on), novelas (not really a fan, but Avenida Brasil is the greatest novela, fkn fight me), and so on and so forth. We usually don't give it all much value, but I personally put much of it in perspective after beginning to learn other languages (God, I just want some good German/Italian video-essay channels to follow!). But I digress :D

      I get this, too! I’m grateful for all the Spanish vocabulary I learned in high school but need to disassociate myself from the pronunciations.
      I close my eyes and listen several times before I allow myself to “read” the words. It’s helping since as I’m trying to recall the new Portuguese word the Spanish takes a backseat.
      Nathaniel offers great advice. I just started learning Portuguese in my spare time as I plan a caminho de Santiago adventure….and now I’m obsessed. Brazilian Portuguese is different, of course, but I’m hoping I can tweak pronunciations while I’m there and the people of Portugal will be forgiving.

    Getting my Portuguese citizenship and moving to Portugal has been one of the most impactful events in my life. • @hokalos

      Branden Moço
      Acho que o português europeu é muito diferente com o brasileiro. I suggest studying both the Portuguese & Brazillian pronounciations simultaneously, especially that his goal is to move to Portugal.
      Aside from different words like o trem and o comboio, a menina and a rapariga, etc. The grammar does differ a bit, but not much. Here are the biggest differences for me when I was learning European Portuguese from Brazillian:
      Phonetics wise:
      1. Heavy use of S-chiado, almost all instances of the letter S are pronounced as ‘sh’
      2. Heavy reduction, almost all the unstressed syllables are barely pronounced.
      3. Dark & deep pronounciation of L, sadly it’s a feature foreign to English
      4. Different pronunciations of stressed E, the Portuguese have a more open voice for stressed E. Something like the A in ‘Apple’.
      5. Almost all unstressed vowels are barely pronounced.
      6. So many more, which is why I think Portuguese is such an interesting language to study on.
      Grammar wise:
      1. The continuous tense is ‘estar a + verb infinitive’
      E.g.: (PTBR) Eu estou escrevendo uma carta para você. (PTEU) Eu estou a escrever uma carta para ti.
      2. Using the definite articles (o que, o meu, a minha) more properly, Brazillians tend to lax it a bit.
      3. The use of other pronouns to refer to ‘you’, like ‘tu’ & ‘o senhor’
      E.g.: (PTBR) Você é minha namorada. (PTEU) Tu és a minha namorada.

    • @josuegabriel8066
      @josuegabriel8066 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Kaloh “você é a minha namorada”, “tu és a minha namorada”, ambas as frases podem possuir ou não o artigo “A”. No sul do Brasil, o pronome “tu” também é utilizado. E em que sentido que os artigos definidos ( o que, o meu e a minha) são utilizados incorretamente por brasileiros ?
      Além disso, no sotaque carioca, a letra “S” é pronunciada com o som chiado.

    Hey, I'm writing this to give you some feedback in your tecniques, and also to thank you for sharing this with the world. I'm Brazilian and I teach Portuguese to immigrants, it's a volunteer work (I'm a lawyer, not a teacher hahaha) and the students are from differents countries and speak different languages (Haiti, Syria, Venezuela, Egypt are some examples), so we don't have a common language. I watched your video about learning Italian and tried to apply this in classroom, and it's working!
    Of course, I had to do some adaptations, we only have classes once a week and most of them have extenuating work hours, so I can't expect them to study at home. But I searched the most used verbs and the translation to their languages, we're doing flashcards, learning one verb per week. We did more things, but this text is already too long hahahaha
    (We had to stop because of the pandemic, but it was working)

Have you heard of Netflix for Language Learners? It’s an extension that allows you to have both your native language and the language you are learning’s subtitles up, and allows you to click on the (foreign language’s) words for a definition! I’ve found it extremely helpful, though admittedly it is not good at slang. I am learning four languages at once using a method given to me by my first English tutor. The concept is very simple: we take the first 5 words and practice them in all possible variations, making 50 sentences. In the second lesson, we add 5 new words to these and practice them along with the old ones, and so on. Gradually, very slowly, we add new elements, tenses, constructions, etc. I also record these sentences with a professional narrator and listen to the correct speech, making sure to say them aloud, trying to pronounce them correctly like the narrator, and then quickly like a native speaker, swallowing some sounds. I study multiple languages like this: I translate these sentences from my native language to a more familiar one, in my case English, then from English to an easier one, and so on, mixing all these languages. It turns into 20 videos for one lesson. It's a colossal amount of work, but the result is fantastic. If you're interested, you can check it out; I upload the voice recordings with the narrator on TH-cam and listen to them there. Maybe it will be useful to someone else too."

    Hi, I’m a Brazilian and also a Portuguese and English teacher. I can speak English, Portuguese, Spanish, a little bit of Japanese and I’m learning Korean. I understand the point of your video, but I dot not like at all the title and the message that you can learn a language from the 0 in 7 days. If you do like that you are only reproducing the sentences not actually understanding it. And since you have other experiences speaking other Roman languages it becomes easier to learn Portuguese, something that someone that do not have your background cannot achieve. As a language teacher I did not like the message in you title, but I liked the message that anyone can learn a new language if they put their mind into it. I just hope that you did not put such a tittle that makes people believe and get their hopes up that they can learn a language in seven days and if they can not do it they would be frustrated and maybe never want to learn another language again.

      Moça acho que todo mundo sabe que não é possível aprender a língua inteira em 7 dias, eu entendi o seu ponto de vista em frustar as pessoas e tals, mas o que ele pode estar querendo passar é um desafio, com esse desafio a pessoa pode se interessar pela língua e começar a estudar por anos e se tornar fluente, mas se tornar fluente em um país ao qual a língua materna não é a mesma que você está estudando sempre é complicado. A pessoa tem que fazer uma total imersão, e foi assim que você aprendeu as línguas que fala hoje em dia.

      Eu próprio aprendi inglês em um total de 6 meses atrás, creio que sou avançado já mas mesmo assim tenho dificuldades, é como se eu fosse um analfabeto funcional no ingles. Tá que eu fiz 4 anos de inglês em escolas, mas eu não queria aprender, hoje em dia eu busquei porque quero estudar fora e necessito aprender a língua. Qualquer idioma é possível aprender em um curto tempo, se eu fui de elementar para avançado em 6 meses qlqr um pode tbm ou até menos tempo

      @MayraKemmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Luis Malaquias sim, concordo. Mas o título dele induz ao que eu disse. E infelizmente, mesmo que o intuito dele seja apenas de fazer com que as pessoas se interessem pela língua, pode fazer o contrário. Justamente pq o título fala que ele aprendeu em 7 dias. É um título enganoso sim. E eu como professora de línguas, não vou passar pano pra isso.

    • @MayraKemmer
      @MayraKemmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Luis Malaquias E para complementar eu aprendi todas as línguas em um país no meu próprio país, então eu não passei pelo processo de imersão. Eu aprendi as línguas como língua estrangeira (quando você aprende em um país não nativo da língua desejada) e não como segunda língua (quando você aprende no país nativo da língua).

    I can't prove it, it's just a theory I have, and perhaps it's a function of being part of a generation that was in high school just before the internet arrived, but . . . I think the fact that you start out writing lists *by hand* is really important. There is something about the physical activity of writing out words that I have found to be a profound aid to memory. I think there's a neural connection being made there that makes retention and retrieval easier later on.
    My experience-I started to learn my first foreign language in high school (Spanish). Everything written out by hand. Didn't have laptops or use computers except to type papers sometimes. Though I didn't use the language for decades, I still retain a lot of what I learned and a great deal of vocab-which is sometimes comically frustrating when speaking Italian and a Spanish word pops out instead.
    Fast forward to the last ten years or so (the decade of my 40s) in which I studied numerous languages, especially Italian. I'm essentially fluent now in italian, but I still find myself looking up the same words over and over, and my grammar isn't as developed as it could be. And no, it's not because I'm older now. I'm of sound mind. I think the main difference is that I used software and apps to study Italian/French/Dutch/Croatian, etc. Just tapping a screen or a keyboard isn't creating those neural connections the way writing did. I've gone back to that method. Time will tell if I start to retain things better.

      There are articles on that matter, I'm sorry but I don't remember the source, but a while ago I read some papers about the influence of handwriting on learning. But basically, you are creating a motor patter that connects to the letters and the words. When you just type your brain only 'reads' the key and hit it. But when you write, your brain has to recall and actively output the letters, which is a deeper process. So your experience and observation are accurate! Hope you can find the articles and use this knowledge to practice the new languages you've learned.
