    For anyone learning a new language and getting frustrated by what you see as a lack of progress: I was in Paris before the pandemic shut everything down. Hung out with a French friend, went to a party where I listened to her have a conversation in French with two other people. I didn’t catch everything they said but I *understood* enough to know they were talking business and she was giving them advice. They kept turning to me to apologize about not including me but I was more than happy listening in and realizing I understood more than I thought I would. Understanding is the first step! Keep going in whatever endeavor you’re taking on.

    I've always thought the most important part in learning a language (or anything really) is actually taking the first step. It doesn't have to be boring or technical, once you have a small basis it gets a lot more fun, cause language is always cultural and once you get to that, there is no stopping the learning process. Loved this video!

    Hi Nathaniel, I am struggling to learn Portuguese being a native Spanish speaker. As you said, it's a lot of unlearning, you would guess that it would be easier because these languages have similar words but it is not. And I wanted to find inspiration to keep going. So thank you for making this video, it's good to see that others struggle too. And if it was easy everyone would do it

      I get this, too! I’m grateful for all the Spanish vocabulary I learned in high school but need to disassociate myself from the pronunciations.
      I close my eyes and listen several times before I allow myself to “read” the words. It’s helping since as I’m trying to recall the new Portuguese word the Spanish takes a backseat.
      Nathaniel offers great advice. I just started learning Portuguese in my spare time as I plan a caminho de Santiago adventure….and now I’m obsessed. Brazilian Portuguese is different, of course, but I’m hoping I can tweak pronunciations while I’m there and the people of Portugal will be forgiving.
      Boa sorte!

    Hey Nathaniel. I have just watched part 1 of your endeavour to learn Portuguese and, as an ESL teacher and Brazilian Portuguese native, I have to say that it made my day to hear what you have to say for different reasons. Firstly, I see that your main message here is how to learn a foreign language, and I have to say that the way you do it is quite interesting. For me, it seems like it can be a very efficient way to learn a language, although I also have to say that it seems like you put a lot of effort into it, which is great, but not something that everyone language learner is willing to do. Adults students, in particular, are usually quite busy with their lives, so from experience, I would not expect that many people trying something like that. I was wondering if you could add to your suggestions something like breaking down your study periods into 25 minutes blocks (Pomodoro technique) and have breaks in between. Apart from that, all your ideas seem great!
    What I would like to stress, however, is how positive your message is, in my opinion. After working with language acquisition for so many years, it is my impression that our mindset plays a pivotal role in terms of how effectively we can learn a language. Your video provides an interesting view on how to encourage people to define their motivations to learn a language, and at the same time offer a realistic, data-based method for learning a language that seems to really work.
    Thank you so much for making this video. I hope you do not mind sharing them with my students :)

    I can't prove it, it's just a theory I have, and perhaps it's a function of being part of a generation that was in high school just before the internet arrived, but . . . I think the fact that you start out writing lists *by hand* is really important. There is something about the physical activity of writing out words that I have found to be a profound aid to memory. I think there's a neural connection being made there that makes retention and retrieval easier later on.
    My experience-I started to learn my first foreign language in high school (Spanish). Everything written out by hand. Didn't have laptops or use computers except to type papers sometimes. Though I didn't use the language for decades, I still retain a lot of what I learned and a great deal of vocab-which is sometimes comically frustrating when speaking Italian and a Spanish word pops out instead.
    Fast forward to the last ten years or so (the decade of my 40s) in which I studied numerous languages, especially Italian. I'm essentially fluent now in italian, but I still find myself looking up the same words over and over, and my grammar isn't as developed as it could be. And no, it's not because I'm older now. I'm of sound mind. I think the main difference is that I used software and apps to study Italian/French/Dutch/Croatian, etc. Just tapping a screen or a keyboard isn't creating those neural connections the way writing did. I've gone back to that method. Time will tell if I start to retain things better.

      There are articles on that matter, I'm sorry but I don't remember the source, but a while ago I read some papers about the influence of handwriting on learning. But basically, you are creating a motor patter that connects to the letters and the words. When you just type your brain only 'reads' the key and hit it. But when you write, your brain has to recall and actively output the letters, which is a deeper process. So your experience and observation are accurate! Hope you can find the articles and use this knowledge to practice the new languages you've learned.

    I just finished reading a book called "Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes" by Daniel Everett. He is a linguistic anthropologist who has done much of his work in the amazon with the Pirahá tribe. He learned how to speak Pirahá and Portuguese while expressing the importance of respecting and learning different languages.

    Thanks for this mind opening video! I love languages and talking with people in their native tongue, even if it just a sentence or two. I've studied 15 languages (more or less) and always found the learning part to be so boring and tedious. And that might be the reason I can speak only 4 out of those 15 well enough, plus my mother tongue. I'm intrigued by your way of learning a new language and am definitely going to give it go!

    As a Brazilian, I feel so humbled that you took the time to learn our language.
    As a language learner myself, I always keep thinking about how foreigners would learn Portuguese, and the amount of ambiguities that our language has. For instance, some years ago, the "trema" (umlaut) was abolished, and so it became frustratingly hard to know when "gue/que" is pronounced as in "guerra (guerra)" or as in "pinguim (pingüim)"... so yeah, sorry about that; I myself only learned to appreciate it when I learned Spanish and saw why it even existed in the first place.
    Also, I really feel like Portuguese is one of the hardest languages to really appear as a native while speaking it. Maybe it's because people usually just try to be cool and use a lot of slangs (if unsure, use them sparingly!); I don't know. Maybe I'm just guilty of it being my mother-language!
    Anyway, there is a lot of great things in Portuguese: there are many video-essay channels popping up these days (Mimimidias, Quebrando a Caixa, Ludoviajante, just to name a few), many great bands (classics like Legião Urbana, Titãs, etc etc the list goes on), novelas (not really a fan, but Avenida Brasil is the greatest novela, fkn fight me), and so on and so forth. We usually don't give it all much value, but I personally put much of it in perspective after beginning to learn other languages (God, I just want some good German/Italian video-essay channels to follow!). But I digress :D

    Hi, I’m a Brazilian and also a Portuguese and English teacher. I can speak English, Portuguese, Spanish, a little bit of Japanese and I’m learning Korean. I understand the point of your video, but I dot not like at all the title and the message that you can learn a language from the 0 in 7 days. If you do like that you are only reproducing the sentences not actually understanding it. And since you have other experiences speaking other Roman languages it becomes easier to learn Portuguese, something that someone that do not have your background cannot achieve. As a language teacher I did not like the message in you title, but I liked the message that anyone can learn a new language if they put their mind into it. I just hope that you did not put such a tittle that makes people believe and get their hopes up that they can learn a language in seven days and if they can not do it they would be frustrated and maybe never want to learn another language again.

      Moça acho que todo mundo sabe que não é possível aprender a língua inteira em 7 dias, eu entendi o seu ponto de vista em frustar as pessoas e tals, mas o que ele pode estar querendo passar é um desafio, com esse desafio a pessoa pode se interessar pela língua e começar a estudar por anos e se tornar fluente, mas se tornar fluente em um país ao qual a língua materna não é a mesma que você está estudando sempre é complicado. A pessoa tem que fazer uma total imersão, e foi assim que você aprendeu as línguas que fala hoje em dia.

    • @luismalaquias6549

      Eu próprio aprendi inglês em um total de 6 meses atrás, creio que sou avançado já mas mesmo assim tenho dificuldades, é como se eu fosse um analfabeto funcional no ingles. Tá que eu fiz 4 anos de inglês em escolas, mas eu não queria aprender, hoje em dia eu busquei porque quero estudar fora e necessito aprender a língua. Qualquer idioma é possível aprender em um curto tempo, se eu fui de elementar para avançado em 6 meses qlqr um pode tbm ou até menos tempo

    • @MayraKemmer
      @MayraKemmer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Luis Malaquias sim, concordo. Mas o título dele induz ao que eu disse. E infelizmente, mesmo que o intuito dele seja apenas de fazer com que as pessoas se interessem pela língua, pode fazer o contrário. Justamente pq o título fala que ele aprendeu em 7 dias. É um título enganoso sim. E eu como professora de línguas, não vou passar pano pra isso.

    • @MayraKemmer
      @MayraKemmer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Luis Malaquias E para complementar eu aprendi todas as línguas em um país no meu próprio país, então eu não passei pelo processo de imersão. Eu aprendi as línguas como língua estrangeira (quando você aprende em um país não nativo da língua desejada) e não como segunda língua (quando você aprende no país nativo da língua).

      That was so nice of you to include all of your work!! And such an excellent reward for subscribing- I’ve never seen a youtuber do that before. Kudos for always being original. Have you heard of Netflix for Language Learners? It’s an extension that allows you to have both your native language and the language you are learning’s subtitles up, and allows you to click on the (foreign language’s) words for a definition! I’ve found it extremely helpful, though admittedly it is not good at slang. (It’s also free so follows your rules.) ~warm wishes from another gen z-er trying to learn languages for fun and to fill time and avoid a quarter life crisis!

    I was impress to see that "ser" and "estar" were on top of your list! Amazing work. However you might notice you wrote "to be" in both of what they mean and they are not the same at all.
    "Ser" is a permanent condition, fix, immutable.
    "Estar" is a condition that is temporary and can be changed.
    For example, you are beautiful. "Tu és bonito". "Tu estás bonito" which basically translation into the difference of being naturally beautiful and the effort to be beautiful. I know that English and french don't have that difference.
    Good job spotting those two verbs!
