The best thing about Gordon in this movie is that yes, he’s close to discovering Batman’s identity, but after that year he doesn’t care, Gordon could learn who Batman is if he wanted to he just doesn’t want to
I would still say Mask of the Phantasm is the best version. And I do think it qualifies as an origin film as half the runtime is about how he became Batman. But having said that, this film is extremely underrated and definitely deserves the love.
You clearly don't know what the word Origin means or know what Batman's Origin is. The director already stated that this is year 2 into being Batman along time ago, so if you weren't paying attention that's on you.
@@inorka907 What are you talking about? I was commenting on Mask of the Phantasm which features Bruce's journey into becoming Batman, it even shows the very first time he put on the costume. Do YOU know what the word origin means?
@@rohannaval1621 What does it matter whether its a flashback or not? The Long Halloween comic was written as a "follow-up" to Year One. The Long Halloween is essentially Year Two without really detailing how lots of the masked villains shows up.
I just watched long Halloween and then year one today, it's kind of hard to see the continuation in the final product with the cast and art style being so different
To be fair, Long Halloween (the original graphic novel) is a direct sequel to Year One and was always intended to be. The first victim of Holiday is the same thug who kidnapped Gordon's baby.
Saw the movie years ago and loved it. When I started collected comics recently, I picked up Year One, and boy it was amazing. The story is largely the same, but the art is superb. The monologue and narration is great too which was heavily reduced in the movie version for obvious reasons.
I love the scene where he's ready to blow himself away and then a bat comes flying through the window, and finds the symbol of fear he needs to make his vision complete.
I remember watching this when I was kid and greatly enjoyed it, thought about giving it another watch just yesterday, and now I'm going to again when this video is over
I loved the Jim Gordon we got in The Batman with Jeffrey Wright, but Imma be real, I still wish we could see Bryan Cranston have a go with the role on screen because I was sold on him being a live action Gordon after seeing this movie YEARS ago.
One of the biggest reasons I think people love Mask of the Phantasm outside of the BRILLIANCE associated with every aspect of that film IS, because it's not another origin story AND challenges Batman as a character. To this day the movie will give me chills whe he kneels in front of his parents grave begging for forgiveness, because he never planned on being happy while being Batman. An incredible Batman movie and NOT just another damn origin story.
I love that the Dark Knight Returns movies are sequels to this one just like the comics. You can see photos of young Jim from this movie in his house in those films
It's year one. Of course not everything is resolved. We do see Barbara react when she answers the phone. The tenderness between Jim and Barbara is gone. They fulfill their parental roles without touching each other. Ultimately, Barb leaves Jim and takes the boy with her. Later, Jim marries Sarah and when he retires in the Dark Knight Returns, Sarah is still with him. But that's decades from year one (and possibly non-canon, I mean President Reagan's in it and he's dead)
Never. That one is taboo to Vee. He only likes DCAU Batman, or similar interperetations. The only reason he covered this one is because it's too damned good to deny!
Man love the video. Been watching a lot of your content and loving it. There was a Batman: Year Two comic written by Mike Barr with art by Alan Davis and covers by Todd McFarlane. It's a good read. Also I know it sounds like Bruce says, "F*****g amateur," but he actually says, "Lucky amateur." So Affleck is still our first F-Bomb dropping Batman
Now if only they would do a No Man’s Land animated film. Do a 4 or 5 part film stripped of the extra bs with Superman. Work off the novel vice the comic book
Yeah, I always got the feeling that even with Joker, Twoface, Penguin and all the rest, even with their total death tolls plus the thugs of gotham, it's still less than the amount of deaths caused by the police and thugs before batman appeared.
Seriously man, you owe it to yourself to read the comic. David Mazzucchelli's art hearkens back to classic Batman stories which really pulls you into the mindset that this is truly the *Beginning* of Batman, and it also matches up really well with the Long Halloween, which is a pseudo-"Year Two" (since nobody really cares about the actual Batman: Year Two, since it was a completely different story with the label Year Two slapped on after the success of Year One). I don't watch most of these animated films, but I do feel like they can lose a lot of the artistic integrity from the original books, probably due to animation restrictions and in favor of forming a more consistent style to line the movies up.
Everyone’s talking about how Walter White played Jim Gordon or how Jim Gordon played Batman, but has anyone ever considered the fact that the Medic from Team Fortress 2 played Harvey Dent?
Request: At some point, please do a 'The Day That Arrow Died'. The show literally destroyed itself in its 3rd season. It turned one of the most beloved characters in the Arrowverse, into the most hated. They changed the once beloved character (Felicity) so completely and began focusing on her so much, that fans left in droves and the viewership began to drop. The show improved largely towards the end of its 5th season, but the following 6th season premier barely had any increase in viewership because fans simply didn't care anymore as it was way too late. By season 3's end it didn't feel like a show about the Green Arrow. And the hated character that fans wanted gone, she didn't leave until they announced the final season. Again, way too late.
1000% agree. "SHIPPERS" (or the morons who capitulated to them, anyway) fucking ruined an EXCELLENT show. I’m actually surprised that they didn’t think about casting her for Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. Not that Anne Hathaway was a bad choice, but Eliza is way better.
Believe it or not, not my favorite movie, but love the comic. It's my favorite Batman story. Bruce's voice felt flat. Great character designs, but some settings felt dull and the film is simultaneously a slave to the comic and neglects some little yet great moments from it. Some comic narration loses its flow and tone when it becomes actual dialog for the film. Too much CGI reliance on something as simple as cars. Too bad because I love Cranston and would have casted him in "The Batman" and this film's end credits score is stellar. Some liberty would be great like a prototype Batmobile, exploration of Alfred and Bruce's relationship, Harvey and Batman's, the aftermath of Gordon's affair, subplot maybe that Essen was planted by Loeb to seduce and blackmail Gordon, some references to Bruce's training journey like "the growl he brought from Africa."
Year one is my fav book ever and I actually watched the movie first . Year one is good coz I love how it is a Jim Gordon story mainly which made me love Gordon as a character more when I read or watch other batman media
The only thing I dislike about this film is Ben McKenzie as Batman. He sounds like he's sleepwalking through the whole film and barely shows any range or emotion. I'm not sure if he was directed that way or he chose to do it, but either way I thought it was the only weak link in the film.
That happened to Bryan Cranston twice while he worked on Breaking Bad. They thought he should play Gordon when he had hair and then they thought he should play Lex Luther when he goes bald. It's very unimaginative but he would've made an excellent both of those.
