  • If you've rode a train in Melbourne, you're probably familiar with trains skipping East Richmond station. But why do so many trains skip it, and should this be the case? I take a look.

    Segregation of Route 70 trams from traffic and an increase in such route's service would create a very viable alternative to East Richmond Station, with passengers now having the option to take the tram to Richmond or Burnley stations. Same can be said for the 78 tram, improving access to surrounding areas.

    Thanks for the vid - great explainer.
    Only thing I would say regarding station upgrades is that once you pass a threshold of significant upgrades (replacing old shelter building for example) you trigger the DDA clause. Then you have to rebuild a new station with accessible ramps or lifts.
    So realistically you could only do minor upgrades like redoing the surface, new PID, etc, otherwise it’s a new station build - which tbh is probably a good idea if it makes it more accessible.

    • @Squiddy00
      @Squiddy00 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The platforms are already at ground level and only separated from the car parks on either side by a chain link fence; no lifts or ramps would be necessary. Honestly, I'm convinced that's the whole reason the station has even survived all this time. It's a section of track which runs right along the footpath of that little corner of Cremorne anyway, might as well have the occasional stopping train and a Myki reader.

    I remember when trains came in fun colours, like cars. You never knew if you were going to get a red one or a blue one or one of those space-age silver ones you saw on other lines.
    Another station that could do with opening a second entrance (it's not like they have to be staffed these days) is the north end of Sandringham station, which is also the direction towards the car park. Everyone who comes by car has to overshoot and double back through the station office, creating a jumble. There's even space for a proper service ramp by continuing ahead as the footpath slopes down heading towards the station.

    I remember East Richmond well. It was the closest station to my hotel when I visited Melbourne in October 2013. This video was an eye-opener for me because I previously knew nothing about the station's history.
    As an example of the situation with Belgrave trains, my family went to the Puffing Billy Railway one day, but initially had to get a Blackburn service and change at Camberwell. At the time, we didn't realise that most Belgrave services skip East Richmond.

    One improvement I'd like to see is a PID installed at the top of the ramps on Church St. I can walk to either Richmond or Burnley in 8 minutes so, depending on which direction I'm travelling, if there's no train due for more than 8 minutes I can often walk to the next station where there's more frequent services.

    I was going into the city on the train a few days ago and we had to move to the side outside East Richmond to let another train pass. The train very slowly started creeping towards the platform which would have seemed like we were stopping. That's when the people on the platform walked up to the train and tried to get in but we kept creeping along slowly then left. At this point, I'm convinced the entire train network is in on elaborate plan to be cruel to those who get on at East Richmond.

    The Glen Waverly trains also service the out stations, so the inner stations are getting the same service and the distance between Richmond and Burnley to East Richmond is almost the same, during peak hours there are a number of Alamein and Blackburn trains stopping at East R both in the morning and afternoon on the down, so East R has plenty of trains to choose from ,also if you want a Camberwell bound train you take the previous Glen Waverly and then get off at Burnley, during off peak on peak you can go in a up direction to Richmond to get a express train which also does not stop at many stations, also it is note worthy to say the having 2 up and 2 down lines together, this is the only place that has it others like the Caufield group have up and down lines side by side, also you need to take in the distance it takes for each Lilydale and Belgrave trains to travel from start to finish, skipping this station is justified, the inner city stations have numerous travel options that outer city stations do not. the up Blackburn trains changed as of 2012 running on the through lines instead of the local lines. with the new working timetable which all Glen Waverley up trains now run direct to Flinders St as there were too many at East R junction, the points just on the up of the platform, crossing over to the through lines to go into the City loop.

    Upgrades are generally justified on safety requirements rather than purely pax numbers. Unless there's a risk of tripping, issues with disabled access, has design elements which inhibit operations or it happens to be the central 'hub'/identity of the suburb, there's no reason to upgrade a station. It's just a waste of money.

    An upgrade of the Glen Waverley trains on the weekend to a 10-minute service like Belgrave and Lilydale trains out of Ringwood would be nice but it may involve those trains running out direct from Flinders St as there may not be enough room in the City loop to accommodate the extra services, l would welcome a 10-minute service, but it is not likely now or in the near future.

      The intention is exactly this - permanent direct services every 10 minutes. It is expected that this will occur some time after the opening of the Metro Tunnel.

    • @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly
      @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MetroManMelbourne How will the new tunnel allow for an increase in the off-peak service on the GWY line? The new tunnel has absolutely NO effect whatsoever on the Burnley group. Off-peak services def should be increased to at least 10 minutes on all lines, and except for a small number of outer suburban single track sections, the existing network can easily cope with an increase in off-peak services. Peak hour is when there are capacity problems, and the only relief the new tunnel will provide is taking the Sunbury line out of the Northern loop - all other lines will just be shuffled around with no increase in capacity.

    • @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly
      @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@piarateking8094 In theory you could take the GWY line out of the Burnley loop and run it through the Caulfield loop instead, but that would require some very awkward trackwork at Richmond if it was even possible.
      To make that work efficiently the portal for the Caulfield loop would have to be relocated. And if they go to that trouble then they could have done the same at the North Melbourne end and ran the GWY line through to Craigie/Upfield bypassing FSS, and do the same to the Northern loop for use in the other direction. Then Caulfield trains could run direct to Sunbury via FSS using the Caulfield and Northern vaduct tracks.
      If they had done that they wouldn't need the Metro tunnel at all, in fact it could have been done at a fraction of the cost of the new tunnel and been finished years ago and provided a greater capacity increase than the new tunnel. Instead they are going to shuffle things around, Frankston to the Caulfield loop and Sandy through to Werribee leaving platforms 12 & 13 at FSS vacant, which does nothing to increase capacity.
      The only capacity increase the new tunnel will provide is taking the Sunbury trains out of the Northern loop. The new stations near St Kilda Rd and the Uni will not provide much relief because most people will continue to use the very frequent tram service which is much more convenient.

    What a load of rubbish! East Richmond is NOT poorly serviced compared to other stations. It has the same service as any other station on the Glen Waverley line. One can get the impression it is poorly serviced because trains on the ALM BEG LIL lines don't stop there, but if you think of ERM as a station on the GWY line it is no worse off than any other GWY line station. In fact, it gets a better service than the GWY line because some peak hour Blackburn trains also stop there. (For the same reason South Kensington is also no worse off than any other station between Footscray and Newport served by by a stopping-all-stations service, it just gives that impression because the Sunbury trains and Werribee expresses don't stop there.) If you want to argue that ERM has an inadequate service to meet its needs, that is fair enough, but then so does the whole GWY line, in fact almost every line in Melbourne has an inadequate frequency of service. But to say ERM has a poor service compared to other stations because non-GWY line trains don't stop there is just wrong.

      @@74_pelicans I’ve never understood the Swinbourne stop. It isn’t an interchange. Why stop there? The local services can deal with it. Anyone know why?

      …if anything it should be Camberwell and Burnley for interchange with Alamein and Glen Waverley. Swinbourne is just a suburban stop. It makes no sense…
