I've got to say Christopher,I've watched quite a few of your reviews now and they really are quite superb. I love the consistency in your testing methods which allows us to go back to previous reviews to compare. I like that you provide us with all the detail about the equipment and I like how you summarise it at the end all in a video that is not overblown with irrelevant dribble. Well done
This lens came with my 70D a few years ago and I automatically discounted it as a cheap kit lens, preferring more expensive lenses that I own. Thing is, I kept coming back to it despite myself for its versatility. If I only want to have one lens its often this. And that's what happened when I went on holiday recently including in my travels a friend's wedding in exotic Goa. I intended just to take some snapshots, there was a professional on hand for formal photos. I didn't even take a flash even though it was outdoor and at night. The lens surprised the heck out of me! IS is really really good. Dynamic range brilliant (Indian weddings are colourful!) and to my greatest surprise, because of the happy marriage of IS, wide open aperture and fairy lights I discovered that bokeh and out-of-focus is just creamy creamy creamy delicious. As distortion and CA are controlled in camera I have new respect for this lens and have returned its to its rightful place at the front of the cupboard.
I recently took a tour boat to see Pictured Rocks National Seashore in Michigan. I brought 3 lenses on the trip for my Canon 90D. A 70-300 zoom, a 17-50 zoom, and this Canon 18-135. I only wanted to bring one lens on the boat tour. You guessed it, the 18-135 was perfect. The light was lousy that day but I added a bit on contrast and saturation in processing, so the colorful rocks turned out beautiful.
Hi Chris, thanks for brilliant review. I have a question - is there a two versions of this lens? I want to buy one but I see the picture and it's different from what you have here. I found the same with your lens too, but it cost around 30$ more. Which one should I buy? Thanks.
Why does everyone keep asking me that question? They're different lenses for different uses. The 18-135 is a superzoom lens, the 55-250 a telephoto zoom lens
Thanks Christopher a lot for all your reviews. I've been using 18-55 lens for one year and want to change to another simple lens, do you think a should buy this 18-135 lens as a replacement?
Christopher - you're awesome! I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the thoroughness and clarity of your reviews. They are absolutely outstanding. Watching your videos give me great confidence while searching for lenses and enhancing my photography skills.
Hi Chris... I just purchased nearly the same lens, marked as 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. At 100€, it seemed like a bargain, particularly since I had in mind the good marks you gave to the STM version. Note that there's neither the STM nor the USM designation on mine, and all of the reviews I find here on TH-cam refer to one or the other of these two versions. How likely is it that the optics perform in the same way? For a lens with the same optical references, when a manufacturer makes changes to motorization or other electronics, do they typically retain the same optical characteristics? Thanks for your reviews! They are great, and I have learned a lot.
Just to add to the weirdness, in case anybody is actually interested in this, I connected my 50D and launched the EOS Lens Registration Tool. It showed my new lens as needing to be added (which I had already seen in the camera itself), but it shows it not as an EF-S but as an EF lens. There is no equivalent EF-S lens in the entire list. Physically, the lens is labelled EF-S, and it has the the little blocking pin that prevents it from being mounted on an a full-frame EF mount. (I tried to put it on my 6D, and no-go.). So, given that the EOS Lens Registration Tool sees it only as an EF lens, I really am curious as to whether or not this lens is equivalent to its EF brother except for the labelling and blocking pin. After running the tool, the camera shows that it now has the correction data, but it describes the lens as EF-S. It sounds like some kind of commercial trick. 🙂
Hello Chris, Thank you for your great work. I especially like your comparison of the lenses to simular lenses in the end of the video. That's a really nice addition.
This lens came with my Canon 800D. I tried filming with this lens, if you want a smooth zoom in and out this lens is not for you. Also this lens can only be used in bright places unless you use a tripod. Many times i find myself complaining about the lens in dark settings.
Thank you Christopher, I have a 5D Markii, I just ordered the 80D mostly for Videos, I was planning to use my Canon L lens, didn't think of zoo noise, so I just purchased this and will give it a test drive. Another nice part of Amazon, I can always return if it does not work out for me. You have a great voice and good information, thanks again.
A very great review Christopher as always!!! I've watched this video several times to compare to other camera lenses. We hope you get to test the Canon 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM NANO very soon. AND the Canon 70-300mm NANO lens. Those are the one's I'm very anxious to see. Thanks.
Hi, Chris, whenever I wanted to buy a lens, I looked at your reviews, you do an excellent job. I also followed your comments with a lot of interest so as not to ask questions that have already been asked, so I would like to ask you something, because you kind of contradicted yourself. In terms of quality, which is sharper, 18-55mm STM or 18-135mm STM?
Thank you for the videos. I had a 60D with 18-200 mm IS kit lens. It was a lemon and after 3 repairs went back. Now I am looking to replace it with the credit note under extended warranty. My question: which is a better lens? The 18-200 IS or the 18-135 STM IS? I loved the pictures that I got with the 18-200 - it really served all my needs from macro to zoom, in particular was great for close proximity action shots of the niece and nephew and it seemed to focus very fast. Unfortunately they no longer include it as part of the kit, and it is $700 Canadian on its own. I wish I had not brought the camera back and lived with its glitches! Thanks for any advice...
...I am planning on buying a 70D, since my experience in testing the t5i Rebel with the 18-135 STM yielded abysmal photos...may have been a bad camera - was an open box, but got spoiled by my 60D
Christopher Frost Photography thanks for your feedback! It's good to know the new kit lens holds its own against the very adequate but large and heavy 18-200 which suffered from severe lens creep issues! Thanks again for the great work!
Loong awaited review, thanx! CA can be fixed with software as mentioned, and the same for barrel distortion (Lightroom). This is a great walkaround lens for still pics & video use.
Hey Christopher, I'm clueless with cameras, just bought a used rebel xti for 100 bucks online. How does this camera stand today? Did i overpay for it considering it came out in 2006? Should I look into buying new lens for it? or is it too old? Thanks! looking forward to hearing back from you.
hi i have DSLR Canon 700D. i want to buy lens which i can zoom very far.. it this lens is good for me or would u suggest which one lens is better? thanks...
+Vanessa2775 I have the 700D with the 18-135 lens and i love it, i find the wide angle of 18mm is great for landscapes, and the big zoom of 135mm is great if you cant get close to what your trying to photograph, i find f/3.5 is a big enough aperture and ive gone all they way up to f/36 with it, ive gotten some amazing photos, landcape portrait and marco with it, but Christopher is correct, there are lots of lenses with zoom higher than 135mm, but generally you lose the wide angle, but i think Tamron do a 18-200mm lens however i dont know the price, for a lens not costing to much i HIGHLY recomend the 18-135mm :)
I'm going to buy the canon 70d with a kit lens. Do you think I should pay the extra money for this 18-135 or stick with the 18-55mm? I'm not sure if the 18-55mm will have decreased video quality?
I have a Canon EOS 550D with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. The one without STM. I want to upgrade to a sharper lens that's also more capable of shooting in low light. What would you recommend? What is the best
favorite lens for me. However, I find that I must test longer zoom range lenses at more FL because decentering can crop up within a fairly narrow range. Also, both sides of the image need to be examined because that is how decentering or tilted optics will become noticeable. A more difficult problem to cope with soft corners.
which lens should i buy for my canon 70d-canon 18-135mm or 18 to 200mm . I am a travelling photographer . Please suggest me a lens . thanks for this video it was quite help full.
It’s super sharp on my R6 mark II which crops adapted Canon EF-S lenses. I imagine it will perform the same on the R7 which has a higher pixel density. It’s just ok on my 90D but better than the older MKI EF 24-105mm (L) f/4. I’ve heard the better pairing on the 90D is the Mark II EF 24-70mm f/2.8.
GeniusPanda It has a Canon's new AF motor called the "Nano USM drive" in it. I wanted to see how that worked, and also if the optics are really the same as compared to the STM version.
Thank you dear for all your reviews, I think you are the best reviewer on youtube. I have the old version of this lens, is the old version same sharpness and contrast as STM?
Hello Chris, thanks a ton for this extremely useful video. It's quite hard to find standardised videos. If you wouldn't mind my asking, how would you rate this lens against the 24-105 Mark I ? It seems that the 18-135 ATM is sharper than the 24-105 M I, but I'm finding that hard to digest.
Super late late late reply. I have both, the 24-105 L is just a bit sharper, but you barely notice it (the toughness and low light capabilities are the big pluses of this lens, besides that you can use it with FF of course). I own several other lenses and I never could let the 18-135 stm lens go. Even when I seldom use it now and shifted to RF full frame cameras. My favorite lens of all time.
I have a Canon 100D (SL1) camera with its kit 18-55 efs lens , the 10-18mm efs, and two old russian manual lenses( 35mm and 135mm and i am very pleased with them). I want to buy the 18-135mm efs or the 55-250mm but i can't decide which. I know that the 55-250 is far more sharp and that it has more zoom but the 18-135 is more convenient since I will not have to change lenses while I am outside shooting. ( I like to shoot a wide variety of photos, from landscapes to portraits and from street photography to night sky photography). What whould your recomend to me ? / What whould your choise be ?
Hello there! I got this lens after watching this great review. I'm using this for video but I seem to be having a couple of issues with this lens. 1. The focus ring takes forever to focus, it's very slow to focus & 2. It gets out of focus really easily by itself, I'll tap something on the touch screen of the camera and it goes out of focus.. I'm really frustrated with this and in thought of selling it now... Seems great for photography, or maybe as a video auto focus lens on a canon, but I'm not sure if its good for manual video work. Did you have anything similar happen with your focus?
I am planning to buy a canon 80D, would you recommend the 18-135mm STM with it ? I am new in photography, I would like something that is good all around, I also plan on having a 50mm 1/8 lens for my videos... is it a good idea ? :-)
hello Christopher! I am in a bit of a dilemma. I am looking for a lens such as this for almost silent autofocus for video and I have a canon rebel t4i. Will this lens fit my camera and work well? Thanks so much.
I am planning to buy Canon700D. I like both indoor and out door shootings. What kinds of lenses should I buy? Is 18-55 & 55-250mm fit both purposes? Or EF-S 18-135 single lens would suit my purpose? Pls answer. Thank you.
It depends on whether you want one lens to shoot everything, or more than one lens to cover more photographic space and give you higher picture quality. Take a look at my kit lens upgrade video for more ideas.
I'm planning to go to tokyo this summer. Considering that I will be taking portraits and zoomed pictures, will it be better to get the ef-s 18-135mm or this 28-135mm one? I'm new to photography and I don't know much.
Hello Chris. I have some doubts about two lens I have ponder in my mind several times. One is the Canon EF-S 18-135 VS Canon EF 24-105. I know that some times expensive lens doesn't mean best quality. From your review of the Canon EF 24-105mm I gather it's not really good quality lens image just because it's an L lens. Thanks for your help!
I haven't tried the 24-105 and don't really intend to, but I doubt it'll be any sharper than the 18-135, and the 18-135 has a smaller size and much better focal range
Gino Perrone They're all very different lenses so it depends what kind of photography you want to do. Most people take a punt on the 50mm f/1.8. Take a look at my reviews for more infoz :-)
Why is this lens so much sharper in picture mode than in video mode? I have it too and I can't seem to get sharp video from it. My videos are definitely noticeably soft even when the focus is dead on. I saw it here too. Do you happen to know why that's the case?
RYSE You're doing something wrong, if your lens is sharp for still images but soft for video work. This lens is more than sharp enough for any kind of 1080p video work. Try adjusting the sharpness settings on your camera
That can't be it. I have a pretty good understanding of my camera and I shoot with cinestyle so naturally the sharpness is lower although it's still pretty sharp in picture mode. Could you perhaps take a look at one of my videos (This isn't a shameless plug :p) and tell me if you think it should be sharper or not? Maybe it's a compression thing.
Just randomly Googled "18-135mm review" so was a shock to see Western Avenue at 0:53 and then more of Cardiff in general! Thanks for the review. (Penarth)
Hi can you use this lens to canon M200, I have a camera M200 but I don’t know what lens is better to get, can you please recommend me some some the best lens for my camera, thank you God bless.
Hey Chris; İ have a question for you? So i just bought my Canon 200d with the kit lens 18-55 III and i am looking for another lenses. İ made 2 option which one should i choose?I want lens for any cases. 1- Sigma 17-50 2.8 2- Canon 18-135 stm and Canon 50 mm 1.8 stm or do you have any other option for budget lenses.I trust your opinions please help me! :)
Depends what you want. If you're happy with the 18-55 zoom range then get the Sigma lens, to increase the quality of your pictures. If you want to get portrait pictures, get the 50mm f/1.8. If you want more telephoto reach, get the 18-135mm
hello thank for your video, am a beginner photographer and i got a canon Eos 700d and canon zoom lens Ef-s 18-135 mm.. i just need a tip how to make use aperture ,shutter speed and lSO in outdoor photographer...Thx for understand me ...One Love
I'm considering the buying a 70d or 60d to replace a 100d. Have you considered upgrading your 60d? The 60d is about 475USD versus 700USD for the 70d. The thing I like most about the 70d is the autofocus system. What are your thoughts?
I do alot of photography away from home, was wondering if investing in a tablet of some sort so while im on the go i can always stop and dump the photos onto the tablet so it makes more room on my camera, my camera is rebel t5i
Hi Chris, I need your help, what would you choose mostly for video, the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS or this kit lens? I am getting the 70D and I am in doubt. Thanks in advance!
Hmm, that's tricky, the Sigma gives you f/2.8 but the Canon lens is build for video much better. If you need f/2.8 then go for the Sigma, but in every other case the Canon is better for video
Hey Chris, great review. I am getting the Canon 700d and am in between the Sigma AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC HSM OS Lens for Canon and the 18-135 that you have reviewed. Your verdict on A: The 700D that comes with the 18-135 or B: Get the 700D body only plus the Sigma 18-200mm lens. Thanks!
Thank you for this review! You are the best when it comes to lens review. Will 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM go well with my EOS M6 ii??? will it perform better than my kit lens 15-45mm?? for photography not video.
Hello Chris, I currently own a 550D and 70D, having just sold on my older 450D with 18-55mm kit lens v1 I am looking for something to replace he older kit lens with something better. Either the Canon 18-135mm STM or the slightly older 15-85mm USM ( now £ 150 ). Should I go for the Canon 15-85mm or do the bad distortions from his lens favour the Canon 18-135mm instead.
Hi Chris, thank you so much for doing this review. I've got a question for you..since I'm planning to upgrade from my kit lens to a good walk around zoom, would you recommend this over Canon's 15-85mm? Both seem to have variable apertures with the new STM lens having a bit more reach. For me, sharpness and image quality is a priority and can't seem to make up my mind. Please help..
hi Chris, ive got a 55-250mm lens but am thinking of replacing it with this 18-135mm as i dont necessarily need a super zoom but do want a wider lens with a bit of zoom capability. do you think its a good choice ? please advise. thanks for the videos they are very helpful end enjoyable.
Thx for another excellent review. Any chance you will do a review of the Sony EP Z 18 - 105mm G zoom lens and how it compares? Just a note for Sony e mount users about STM lenses, they won't function without a Commlite or Metabones type adapter if you cross platform it with a Sony e mount camera.
New to photography, and I recently purchased this lens used. The end piece of the lens seems to be a bit wobbly, is this normal? It seems to take pictures well, I just wasn't sure if any component on the lens should seem loose.
Hi Chris! I just saw your review regarding Canon 18-135 STM lens and must say that it very precise and comprehensive. I have a question to you, if you could help me here. I have Canon 450D and bought in 2009 now I was thing to purchase Canon 18-135 mm IS-STM lens. What do you think is it worth to purchase or not and will it work with 450D, will I get some benefit from STM, though I know 450 dont shoot movies and STM works for videos. I will appreciate your kind response.
for a Canon EOS 1300D DSLR Camera what lenses go well with for professional indoor outdoor video work? i was thinking in buying 2 lenses the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens and the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens maybe i should get a 70D camera?
If you want to do professional video work then an entry-level camera like the 1300D will not help you. Start with a Canon 70D and 18-135mm STM lens, and see where you go from there
Hi Cristopher, this is an awesome review. I just wonder what lens would be better for landscspe in terms of sharpness: this or the 18-55mm IS STM? Thanks in advance, have a nice day!!!
hey Chris!.. I'm looking forward for your review on Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, a kit lens for full frame 6D camera and its comparison with other kit lens EF 24-105 L lens. Thanks.
Hi Christopher, I currently own a canon eos rebel t4i with a 18-55m lens and I would like to buy a lens to do landscape pictures since im going to Peru next month and would like to take pictures of the wildlife, nature and the landscape. Which will be the best lens in the Price range of 250-350, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm or another one?
Hello Chris, This lens helps me a lot for video shooting when I mount it on my DSLR, I don't have to carry a camcorder. Could I ask you please? If Canon releases APS-C DSLR camera with 4K video mode someday, will this lens give good contrast and sharpness for 4K video shooting in the future?
Hi Christopher! Thank you for this review! I'd like to get a Canon EOS 70D DSLR with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens for portaits and blurry backgrounds, and I'd like a second lens for videos and outdoors. Which would you recommend? I am currently torn between the 18-135mm STM f/3.5-5.6 and the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM...
+Isabelle St-Laurent Well, if you get the 55-250 but not the 18-135, then you won't be able to shoot at wide angles, so you'd probably be better off with the 18-135
Hi Christopher Frost Photography I have a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM and i used it to shoot my girls softball game. While i was standing on either 1st or 3rd base side it seemed the 75mm was not a low enough zoom for me to get those shots at 1st and 3rd base. Would the Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS STM lens be good for shooting softball games? And is the focus be fast enough as the USM? If not what lens would recommend.
Christopher Frost Photography Thank you. And what would you recommend for night time softball shooting under stadium lights standing on the ground floor.?
Hello Chris, Thanks for your excellent review both of 18-135mm STM and USM! Which one would you suggest me to buy between them? By the way, I would like to upgrade soon from my old Pentax K200 to Canon T6s or T6i with one of those lenses.
Christopher Frost Photography- First of all I really enjoy your videos... You are awesome! If you strictly look at Image Quality, is the 18-135 STM way better than the 18-55 STM? Money is an issue but I'm willing to spend a bit more on 18-135 if it is a significant difference... Again, love your videos!
Christopher Frost Photography Wow! Quick Response! You are even more awesome now! :) I should probably say that I currently own your nifty Canon 60D as well along with two lens: the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM & the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II... I don't really use the telephoto and I find myself not having enough room to back up with the prime lens... I definitely need a lens with a smaller focal length but finding one on a budget is difficult... Any suggestions?
Great Review Chris..! Just wondering if you could do a review on the Sigma 30 f1.4 Art for APS-C SLRs? I'm really considering it because its $400.00 cheaper than the fantastic 1.4 35mm Sigma Art. Thanks
Hi Chris, thanks for your analyzing.I want to ask some question. It's seem like that there's not a big difference of photo sharpness between 15-85& 18-135 STM, and the photo quality as well. So which one will you recommend me to choose?
Hello Doing a great job reviewing the camera lenses. It helps allot. Please Help me out to choose between 15-85mm and 18-135mm as I have 50mm prime and 55-250mm Zoom. Which one should i Buy? thanks in advance.
Hello, I'm looking for a lens that will serve the purpose of product photography (garments, clothes etc) and a bit of travel too. Planning to buy Canon 800D along with 18-135 STM lens. Is this the right option?
Christopher Frost Photography thanks for the reply sir. Also, what are your view on using filters? Recently bought the OSAKA CPL filter and not happy with it. Just wondering if we really need filters for landscape and portrait photography.
Thanks for all your reviews, I got it with a 800d body. How can I set infinity focus for lightning photo with a non stop focus ring ? Mine is not so smooth the zoom ring
Is the t51 much better than the 3ti? Just getting into DSLR ( old film hold-out ) here, have to buy all new lenses, big initial outlay of money, giving up thousands of dollars of lenses for slr for dslr. Please advise, thank you.
Actually Chris, I want to take advantage of the built in video capability. Both my slr and camcorder are way out of date. I think you are indicating that the 5ti is superior to the 3ti in terms of video capabilty. please advise, and thank you for getting back to me on this subject. Semi-pro here, New Jersey, USA. Have used the old slr Minolta's SRT-101 series w/ Rokkor lenses since 1972 w/ great success. I always felt that Rokkor "glass" was superior to both Nikon and Canon, but pros in the business now are overwhelmingly using Canon over Nikon, at least in photo-journalism assignments in this NYC metro area. Minolta had gone out of the camera business, selling it's technology to Sony. Their 7D dslr was too little too late in terms of capabilty and it came with a high price tag. Sales were mediocre and Minolta decided to end it's manufacturing of all cameras and camera equipment. Thus in the market for a new camera, and still shooting film at this moment ! Have about $750.00 to invest, so looking for a capable camera, as I only do photography as a side line. Mostly architectural and landscapes for the construction industry, ( photo-documentation ). Thank you again.
Does anyone know if this lense falls back on itself when pointed up? I have been considering buying this kit lense with the 70D but ... I have a Canon 18-200 IS 3.5-5.6 kit lense that came with my 60D. I love it but when I zoom in and point up in the sky the lense falls back (zooms out) all by itself. It is very loose. It makes it very hard to astro photography (as you want to zoom in and focus on star then zoom out again).
I am flying to Costa Rica. Which is the best lens to take: Canon RF 24-105mm f4-7.1 IS STM or Canon EF-S 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS Standard? I have a Canon RP.
Nice informative vid! Just subscribed...This lens came with my 7d so I guess like you said this lens is not good for portrait shots. So what's best do you recommend for portraits then???
I love how the video just ended so abruptly. No outro. You'd said your words and boom. Video ended. Love it.
Well done
I couldn't agree more!
You have some of the best lens reviews on youtube man, seriously :)
Which lens are u referring to bro?
@@BharadwajMadiraju The Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, literally being reviewed in this video.
thank you for this!
@@BharadwajMadiraju 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I just ordered one for my 90D 😉
This is the #1 lens I use! I absolutely love it. It takes exceptional pictures on my Canon 70D.
Ive seen many many reviews of lenses but your reviews are the best. Straight to the point with good samples and smart data. Thank u very much.
haha it’s fun seeing my home town in your videos and recognising exactly where the photos and videos were taken!
Again a quality review by Christopher as always. Well Done! :)
Hi Chris, thanks for brilliant review. I have a question - is there a two versions of this lens? I want to buy one but I see the picture and it's different from what you have here. I found the same with your lens too, but it cost around 30$ more. Which one should I buy? Thanks.
Get the STM version, or the new USM version (if you can afford it - it's expensive)
EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM vs EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM?
Why does everyone keep asking me that question? They're different lenses for different uses. The 18-135 is a superzoom lens, the 55-250 a telephoto zoom lens
Christopher Frost Photography thanks for the reply! which one is good on blurring the background? And better quality photo?
The 55-250 will give you slightly more out of focus backgrounds. As for 'better quality photo' - watch my reviews, and you'll see :-)
You do good reviews, factual and to the point unlike so many others.
Thanks Christopher a lot for all your reviews. I've been using 18-55 lens for one year and want to change to another simple lens, do you think a should buy this 18-135 lens as a replacement?
you should
Dam you sold me on this lens! Buying an 80D with this lens.
I have the older non STM version. Is it worth upgrading just for image quality? I am not interested in video just for taking pictures.
This lens came with my Canon 800D. I tried filming with this lens, if you want a smooth zoom in and out this lens is not for you. Also this lens can only be used in bright places unless you use a tripod. Many times i find myself complaining about the lens in dark settings.
Please Review the NEW 18-135mm USM!!!!
yeah,
I also want to see the difference between the two
It’s way better.
@@alloneword154 why?
fadanyiellaklova. It’s more sharp and quieter. Better color.
@@alloneword154 Its louder, not quieter.
Thanks.
I know I’m 8 years late but would you recommend this for Sports Photography ?
Hi, Chris, whenever I wanted to buy a lens, I looked at your reviews, you do an excellent job. I also followed your comments with a lot of interest so as not to ask questions that have already been asked, so I would like to ask you something, because you kind of contradicted yourself. In terms of quality, which is sharper, 18-55mm STM or 18-135mm STM?
Hi Chris I am looking for a better zoom lens for my M50 and trying to decide on the 18-135 or 15-85 any pointers please or other options 😀
Thanks for any advice...
...I am planning on buying a 70D, since my experience in testing the t5i Rebel with the 18-135 STM yielded abysmal photos...may have been a bad camera - was an open box, but got spoiled by my 60D
jennifer brouse They're quite similar lenses, I slightly prefer the 18-135 though, it's a little smaller and sharper
John Stott! That's a delightful surprise tucked away in the video. God bless!
Sounds like a good deal for an old camera. Take a look at my kit lens upgrade video if you're thinking of a new lens :-)
hi i have DSLR Canon 700D. i want to buy lens which i can zoom very far.. it this lens is good for me or would u suggest which one lens is better? thanks...
+Vanessa2775 There are lots of lenses that zoom further than 135mm. The Canon 55-250mm STM is excellent - although, it won't give you a wide angle
+Christopher Frost Photography thanks for replying :-) your videos really help me :-)
+Vanessa2775 I have the 700D with the 18-135 lens and i love it, i find the wide angle of 18mm is great for landscapes, and the big zoom of 135mm is great if you cant get close to what your trying to photograph, i find f/3.5 is a big enough aperture and ive gone all they way up to f/36 with it, ive gotten some amazing photos, landcape portrait and marco with it, but Christopher is correct, there are lots of lenses with zoom higher than 135mm, but generally you lose the wide angle, but i think Tamron do a 18-200mm lens however i dont know the price, for a lens not costing to much i HIGHLY recomend the 18-135mm :)
+Jack Ashby wow thankyou for telling me about this. This information really help me :-) im so buying this...
+Vanessa2775 your most welcome :)
I'm going to buy the canon 70d with a kit lens. Do you think I should pay the extra money for this 18-135 or stick with the 18-55mm? I'm not sure if the 18-55mm will have decreased video quality?
The 321 Show If they're the STM versions then they're both fine for video, but I'd say the 18-135 is worth the extra money
I have a Canon EOS 550D with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. The one without STM.
I want to upgrade to a sharper lens that's also more capable of shooting in low light. What would you recommend? What is the best
The only really good one that would work also on full frame is the Tamron 24-70 VC USD
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks! I'll go check that one out!
favorite lens for me. However, I find that I must test longer zoom range lenses at more FL because decentering can crop up within a fairly narrow range. Also, both sides of the image need to be examined because that is how decentering or tilted optics will become noticeable. A more difficult problem to cope with soft corners.
how do you go up to to the high aperture when the lens is only 3.5-5.6? great video thanks
which lens should i buy for my canon 70d-canon 18-135mm or 18 to 200mm . I am a travelling photographer . Please suggest me a lens . thanks for this video it was quite help full.
watch his video on superzooms compared (including both those lenses)- i think the 18-135 was the sharpest in his opinion
M Dat I have both but the 18-135 is a better lens plus a better auto focus system.
Sir please guide which lens I should buy. Either canon 18-135mm or canon 18-200. And which of these two lens is better in picture quality.
Thanx
What lens do you think would be best for quality and focus? I have a Canon t5.
Your video is soo clear and I purchased the canon T5i camera with this lense and my videos aren't as clear. Can you please offer some suggestions?
Nia Nicole Check your focus
Christopher Frost Photography
ok thanks. I use the autofocus button in EOS utility. Should I be checking the focus someplace else?
Please do a re-review of this lens with the Canon R7!
Any chance we'll be getting a review on the new Nano USM version?
If I can hire one, yes. But really, apparently, the optics are the same
Christopher Frost Photography Awesome! I see.
what's the difference then? thank you.
+Qudor Eng I haven't tested the old version - but this newer one is meant to be noticeably sharper
+Christopher Frost Photography thank you Chris for replay
It's down to personal preference. I don't mind changing lenses at all so I would add the 55-250 STM to your kit.
Thank you very much!!!
+Iacovos Argyrides Try another lens and see if you have the same problems first - it might just be you're needing a little more practice.
I don't have the same problem with my other lenses just with this one. I'm suspecting it's the STM
I am planning to buy a canon 80D, would you recommend the 18-135mm STM with it ? I am new in photography, I would like something that is good all around, I also plan on having a 50mm 1/8 lens for my videos... is it a good idea ? :-)
Mikail Music : I just bought the 80d. Which lenses did you buy?
which one will be better for canon eos 60D ?? Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS STM or Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS ???
how does the 18-135 STM compare to the 18-55 STM in terms of image quality?
It's a little less sharp (but it has a far longer zoom range)
hello Christopher! I am in a bit of a dilemma. I am looking for a lens such as this for almost silent autofocus for video and I have a canon rebel t4i. Will this lens fit my camera and work well? Thanks so much.
+dominicanbeauty82 All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera (except EF-M lenses)
Thanks for the reply. I watched the video and I think I may go for the 18-135 STM. Thank you mate.
+Thiago De Almeida Get the 18-135 STM, unless you have a full-frame camera
Chris, which one is better? Canon 18-135 IS STM, or Canon 24-105 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM? I would use them on a 700D.
I haven't tried the 24-105 and don't really intend to, but I doubt it'll be any sharper than the 18-135, and the 18-135 has a smaller size and much better focal range
Thanks! Just let me ask you something more... Whcih one is better for using on a APS-C camera? Canon 50mm f/1.8, 40mm f/2.8 or 24mm f/2.8?
Gino Perrone They're all very different lenses so it depends what kind of photography you want to do. Most people take a punt on the 50mm f/1.8. Take a look at my reviews for more infoz :-)
Thanks for answering! Do you have any email address, so I can explain you better what's my situation? I would thank you a lot!
+RYSE You could PM a link. First though, try another lens and see if you're getting the same results
Never mind. I have a 50mm 1.8. Same results.
+RYSE Canon DSLRs have intentionally blurred videos. You have to use Magic Lantern firmware or Canon Cinema series camera to get real FullHD quality.
what if this lens used in the night? is it bright enough and how about the quality of the pic we took?
Just randomly Googled "18-135mm review" so was a shock to see Western Avenue at 0:53 and then more of Cardiff in general! Thanks for the review. (Penarth)
that was some very detailed and clearly explained review.. ! great work
Hi Chris,
I absolutely prefer your review. How are the chances of review of the new 18 - 135 IS USM and a comparism to the STM version?
I'll keep an eye out for it but they're eye-wateringly expensive right now, and from what I hear, the optics are the same as the 18-135 STM
Hi can you use this lens to canon M200, I have a camera M200 but I don’t know what lens is better to get, can you please recommend me some some the best lens for my camera, thank you God bless.
Enjoyed this video but I'm curious how Canon's new 18-135mm USM is compared to the STM version new review please?
I will sometime, but I've heard it's optically almost the same
Hey Chris;
İ have a question for you?
So i just bought my Canon 200d with the kit lens 18-55 III and i am looking for another lenses.
İ made 2 option which one should i choose?I want lens for any cases.
1- Sigma 17-50 2.8
2- Canon 18-135 stm and Canon 50 mm 1.8 stm
or do you have any other option for budget lenses.I trust your opinions please help me!
+Chijioke Ezeh You will need to watch some videos or read some guides about basic photography. All the best
I'm considering the buying a 70d or 60d to replace a 100d. Have you considered upgrading your 60d? The 60d is about 475USD versus 700USD for the 70d. The thing I like most about the 70d is the autofocus system. What are your thoughts?
Charlie Chao I did indeed upgrade to the 70D. It's considerably nicer than the 60D in my opinion!
I do alot of photography away from home, was wondering if investing in a tablet of some sort so while im on the go i can always stop and dump the photos onto the tablet so it makes more room on my camera,
my camera is rebel t5i
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful for me and I think for other people too. Great job!
Hi, is the 18-135mm lens better to have than 2 lenses, 24mm and 50mm?
Thanks!
I didn't really like the Sigma lens, I'd much prefer the Canon. Check my review of the Sigma lens for more infoz
is this lens good for filming things such as youtube videos?
Im filming with this lens :) I like it, it's super quiet.
Of course specially for handheld videos
Yes. It’s AF is almost silent.
What shutter speed would you use too in the case of nature and potrait photography for blury back grounds with canon 600 D and 18-135 stm lense.
To get a more out of focus background, use a wider (lower 'f'-number) aperture
Thank you for this review! You are the best when it comes to lens review. Will 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM go well with my EOS M6 ii??? will it perform better than my kit lens 15-45mm?? for photography not video.
Hello Chris, I currently own a 550D and 70D, having just sold on my older 450D with 18-55mm kit lens v1 I am looking for something to replace he older kit lens
with something better. Either the Canon 18-135mm STM or the slightly older 15-85mm USM ( now £ 150 ). Should I go for the Canon 15-85mm or do the bad distortions
from his lens favour the Canon 18-135mm instead.
Chris, I would love your advise. Would you upgrade from this to a Sigma 17-50mm f.2.8? Thank you,
hi Chris, ive got a 55-250mm lens but am thinking of replacing it with this 18-135mm as i dont necessarily need a super zoom but do want a wider lens with a bit of zoom capability. do you think its a good choice ? please advise. thanks for the videos they are very helpful end enjoyable.
+Vikingdescendent Don't cover Sony lenses, I'm afraid! My next target is the Fuji X system.
It'll work great. I can't tell you how much better it is than the original 18-135 lens, though, although the build quality is better.
I must say thanks for your quick response. Thanks again.
Chris one more question, will STM work with (2009) 450 or not while shooting pics? Sorry to bother you. Regards.
arnolds77
STM works with any camera. It just gives an extra help to people shooting video
for a Canon EOS 1300D DSLR Camera what lenses go well with for professional indoor outdoor video work? i was thinking in buying 2 lenses the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens and the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens maybe i should get a 70D camera?
If you want to do professional video work then an entry-level camera like the 1300D will not help you. Start with a Canon 70D and 18-135mm STM lens, and see where you go from there
Hi Cristopher, this is an awesome review. I just wonder what lens would be better for landscspe in terms of sharpness: this or the 18-55mm IS STM?
Thanks in advance, have a nice day!!!
Hmm, not sure - have a look at my video review of the 18-55 - my guess is it would be a tiny bit sharper but they'll both perform in a similar way
hey Chris!.. I'm looking forward for your review on Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, a kit lens for full frame 6D camera and its comparison with other kit lens EF 24-105 L lens. Thanks.
hey, chris I think you should make a review of canon 18-135 mm IS USM lens and upload....
I'm looking out for one
@@christopherfrost what is the IS stands for?
How is it comparing to Sigma 17-70 C for still photography, other than Sigma's brighter and shorter which is fine for me? Thanks
Very similar really, but the Canon has much nicer build quality. Check out my review of the 17-70
so in your opinion, what is better for everyday walk around city street photography. the 15-85 usm OR 18-135 stm
Hmm, I would go for the 15-85, as I quite like my wide angles
Hi Christopher, I currently own a canon eos rebel t4i with a 18-55m lens and I would like to buy a lens to do landscape pictures since im going to Peru next month and would like to take pictures of the wildlife, nature and the landscape. Which will be the best lens in the Price range of 250-350, the Canon EF-S 18-135mm or another one?
Which lens gives better image and sharpness Canon EF-S 18-135 IS STM or Tamron 17-50 f / 2.8?
Hello Chris, This lens helps me a lot for video shooting when I mount it on my DSLR, I don't have to carry a camcorder. Could I ask you please? If Canon releases APS-C DSLR camera with 4K video mode someday, will this lens give good contrast and sharpness for 4K video shooting in the future?
+Tanadet Maitrichit This lens would be virtually useless for 4K video work
Hi Christopher!
+Isabelle St-Laurent Well, if you get the 55-250 but not the 18-135, then you won't be able to shoot at wide angles, so you'd probably be better off with the 18-135
Thank you so much for such a quick reply! Do you think I'd like having both or will the 18-135 be versatile enough?
+Isabelle St-Laurent If I were you then I wouldn't mind keeping the 55-250 STM handy, for wildlife pictures and for sharper image quality
Hi Christopher Frost Photography
I have a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM and i used it to shoot my girls softball game.
Yup, try the 18-135, focus should be fast enough, just about
Christopher Frost Photography Thank you. And what would you recommend for night time softball shooting under stadium lights standing on the ground floor.?
martinez189
Something with an aperture of at least f/2.8
Hello Chris,
Thanks for your excellent review both of 18-135mm STM and USM!
Which one would you suggest me to buy between them?
By the way, I would like to upgrade soon from my old Pentax K200 to Canon T6s or T6i with one of those lenses.
Take a look at my review of the USM lens. In my opinion, might as well go for the STM version
Thanks! It's not really a very significant difference, but the 18-135 is a little sharper.
Thanks
That review is coming very soon. :-)
Very Nice.
Thanks so much.
Hi Chris, thanks for your analyzing.I want to ask some question. It's seem like that there's not a big difference of photo sharpness between 15-85& 18-135 STM, and the photo quality as well. So which one will you recommend me to choose?
If you watch until the end of the video, you'll see! :-)
Hello
Doing a great job reviewing the camera lenses.
It helps allot.
Please Help me out to choose between 15-85mm and 18-135mm
as I have 50mm prime and 55-250mm Zoom.
Which one should i Buy?
thanks in advance.
The 18-135mm is a great all rounder but the focal range is already covered by your 55-250mm but the 18-55mm is not as sharp
he literally answered your question in his video. did you actually watch it??
Hello, I'm looking for a lens that will serve the purpose of product photography (garments, clothes etc) and a bit of travel too. Planning to buy Canon 800D along with 18-135 STM lens. Is this the right option?
It'll be a good start. You could get an inexpensive Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens too for the product photography if you wanted
Christopher Frost Photography thanks for the reply sir. Also, what are your view on using filters? Recently bought the OSAKA CPL filter and not happy with it. Just wondering if we really need filters for landscape and portrait photography.
Great video Chris, love it a lot.
Please your advise for me choosing Tamron 18-200mm; 18-270mm; or Canon 18-135mm; 55-250mm?
Please help me to choose.
The Canon STM lenses are quite superior
Thanks for all your reviews,
I got it with a 800d body.
How can I set infinity focus for lightning photo with a non stop focus ring ?
Mine is not so smooth the zoom ring
hey any review for Canon Zoom Lens EF 35-135mm 1:4,0-5,6 USM?
Is the t51 much better than the 3ti? Just getting into DSLR ( old film hold-out ) here, have to buy all new lenses, big initial outlay of money, giving up thousands of dollars of lenses for slr for dslr. Please advise, thank you.
It depends what you want from your camera - if it's just stills shooting then the T3i is fine
Take both 😎
Obviously is better the 18-135mm, it's faster and more focal range than the RF24-105mm
Nice informative vid! Just subscribed...This lens came with my 7d so I guess like you said this lens is not good for portrait shots. So what's best do you recommend for portraits then???
The Canon 85mm f/1.8 is really good :-)
Christopher Frost Photography What about the 17-55? is it good for portrait shots? BHP photo told me that it takes detailed and sharp shots.
