- In Madagascar, “rosewood” is at the heart of everyone's desire. For illegal loggers, the last trees in the country are the main source of their income; coveted trees are the last on earth. In Masoala, a villager leads a team of five lumberjacks, the “festy festy”, “les petits malins”. For 5 euros a day, they have to face the torrential rains, mud, mosquitoes and oppressive heat. They have to descend from the mountain a log of nearly 500 kilos for three days. A grueling journey. To transport “the rosewood” safely, these men risk their lives in the rapids. This is the most dangerous moment in transport. Before they can use canoes, carriers must pass the rapids with rafts. The logs are then sent to China. In Madagascar, poverty drives thousands of peasants to the south of the island, "Ilakaka", the largest deposit of sapphires in the world. For ten years, this Malagasy "Eldorado" has attracted students, the unemployed, taxi drivers, a whole population of underprivileged people who come to seek their fortune. As far as the eye can see, the ocher earth has been dug by hand , a multitude of manholes approximately 1 meter in diameter. Ilakaka, anyone can try their luck, all it takes is a shovel, a pickaxe and a lot of luck. To find precious stones, a miner goes blind down the well, digs, fills buckets that another man brings to the surface by a rope. All that remains is to pass this land through a sieve to hope to find the precious stone. It’s simple, but dangerous. Problems arise as soon as the shafts are a dozen meters deep and the miners decide to dig the galleries horizontally, without shoring. In this Gruyere that the region has become, collapses are very frequent and, regularly, minors do not come to the surface!

What a crazy episode. The things these people have to do for survival is unreal. And those mines were a nightmare. The cameraman and that toyota get some huge props from me.
Thumbs up for the camera man indeed , I think he was sensible enough to ask a miner to take a smartphone down in the mine.
I am so claustrophobic that I couldn’t even watch the mining section of the video, As soon as he started to go down the hole in the camera give a shot of the angle looking up I struggled with my own breathing and I just am just watching! I don’t know how you guys do it my prayers for anyone who goes down any small space.

Special kudos to the camera men and crew for this amazing footage. Beyond that a special mention and thought to these men who have to make a living in such dangerous conditions. Its easy to speak about conservation if the government and environment meets the basic needs of its citizens.

"The government" is just people, its not some ethereal entity able to solve all problems and provide for everyone, especially if the underlying system is broken. "The environment" is the responsibility of all native people living in the area, they must all take care of their own soil. What these men are doing is destroying their homeland by exporting rare materials to other countries so some rich guy can buy a sapphire necklace or have a rosewood dining table. I wouldn't even dream of starting a family in such conditions, they say they're doing it to provide for their family so their kids can have a better life. What exactly is their kid going to do when they remain in poverty? The cycle will just continue, their homeland will continue to deteriorate as all resources are sold off until there is nothing left. What is the solution you may ask? It's both simple in explanation but complicated in execution. There are simply far too many people trying to survive off of too few resources. The choice is this, if you cannot even provide for yourself, why would you ever bring a child into the world who will only suffer alongside you?

On the flipside it's sad to realize how poor the cuisine with little or no road infrastructure...just really makes one to app where they are in life.,without some challenges.

I think the guy who narrates is great! I love how he says whats the people are saying instead of you having to read the words so quick, i wish more documentary vids do that.
The narrator is great! But they do make up some translations and say completely other things sometimes. But it's almost like it's that that makes these series so good, they just wing it. xD

I love how although these journeys are full of problems, they don't complain or seem frustrated by being inconvenienced. It's just a fact of life there, so everybody gets on with clearing the way and trying again. Interesting to compare that with western drivers who can get almost anywhere with ease and still express rage/despair at the mildest unexpected holdup. This is true resilience and a can-do attitude, they'd never get anything done otherwise.
Poor people can teach us a thing or two. Community, perserverance, caring about others

I work for a big guitar company in California... we buy a ton of rosewood and I’m sure it’s not all legally exported.

nutty nut I work for fender... we have a small contingent of Gibson at our facility but they only do about 20 guitars a day while we do 450. Some custom shop guitars cost more than 10,000 dollars. Mostly rosewood and ebony

When you have to choose between death due to poverty, and destruction of forest . 90% will choose destruction of forest
@@longlee1100 and what do they do once the forest has been destroyed? At this point the forest can still draw tourists etc. and offer residents an alternative way to make a living , nobody will come to a country reduced to a desert. Cutting down the forest is a narrow minded, short term 'solution'.

When you are poor (I was almost homeless once but thank god, my mom educate me good) , all you can think about is money to make your lives better, to save up money for when sht happens to you. While I agree that cutting forest is shortsighted, you have to pay attention to how much education is being offered to them by government....to get education to see the shortsightedness of cutting forest, you need education. to get education, you need money to pay tuition if government doesn't help you. to get money? you guess it, cutting down forest.

By the way, US and Canadian houses are built with commercially grown timber from managed plantations, forests are not cut down indiscriminately.
