    What is the HACK MUSIC THEORY show?
    Hello, we're Kate Harmony and Ray Harmony, and together we are Revolution Harmony. If you’re new to our channel, welcome, and please allow us to introduce ourselves. We're music producers based in beautiful Vancouver, Canada, and we’re also the founders of Hack Music Theory, the pioneering notation-free method for making great music. Every Monday, you’ll find us here on TH-cam sharing our top secret music theory hacks, which are designed to transform you into a super confident music maker whose songs will stand out on those Spotify playlists. So, whether you’re a beginner or a professional, a songwriter or a producer, an instrumentalist or a DAW musician, our music theory hacks will have you writing great songs in no time!
    Who is RAY HARMONY?
    Ray is an award-winning music lecturer and the author of the critically-acclaimed book series, Hack Music Theory. After decades of teaching ‘popular’ and ‘classical’ music theory, Ray created a unique crossover method for songwriting, which we call Hack Music Theory. We use this method to write all our music. Ray’s songs have even featured Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Kool Keith, and many more.
    Who is KATE HARMONY?
    Kate is the only person on the planet who's been trained by Ray Harmony to teach his Hack Music Theory method. From 2014 to 2016, she undertook her formal teacher training, and has since become a partner and co-teacher at Hack Music Theory. Kate has a Grade 8 (the highest grade) Distinction in Popular Music Theory from the London College of Music, and is also a songwriter, producer, and recording artist.

      Hack Music Theory Wow, thank you! I am really fascinated by Post Rock. I am not that good, but I try to be consistent in my writing and practicing. I challenged myself to do music no matter what. I saw your online apprentecipe and I really want to take that kind of class, where I can get a feedback, because I never had a teachers. Can I enroll later? What you are doing is amazing and I dont want to miss a chance to learn more about music. :)

    • @HackMusicTheory
      @HackMusicTheory  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi by janis! Thanks for sharing. That's awesome that you are so committed to your music. Through practice, hard work, and learning music theory and how to apply it, you will absolutely become a better songwriter, so you're definitely on the right path!
      There is no individual feedback offered in the apprenticeship, as we just don't have enough time to offer this consulting service and teach Hack Music Theory and make music! However, I think you would find it very helpful in your journey to becoming a better songwriter. Ray always says he wishes he had his teachings when he started making music in his early teens... but he had to learn the hard way and I'm so glad he did, otherwise, we'd have no Hack Music Theory!
      There are two ways you can do the apprenticeship. You can do Apprenticeship #1, which gives you access to 16+ hours of video of Ray writing "Mile Zero" from start to finish, and teaching all the theory along the way. The other option is to sign up to our Artist tier on Patreon, where you can watch Apprenticeship #2 unfold over the coming months. We start in February, and we can't wait!
      If this sounds like it would be helpful to you, then you can find out more here: www.RevolutionHarmony.com/Apprenticeship. Let me know if you have any other questions.
      Thanks again for your interest in Hack Music Theory, and until next time, take care and happy songwriting! Kate :)

    Wow, I just realised I kind of did this! Since I finished my January song so quickly last week I started working on a new one. This time I wanted to feature percussion as a main driving factor on the song and give it a more latin american/afro feel. So I used 2 djembe drums allong with the drums, but they didn't really sound tight together so what I did was to use the bass note on the djembe pattern and copied it to the kick drum, and suddenly everything fit completely nice together. For harmony I went all over the place using wierd scales and modulations to get the sound I had in mind. Now I'm struggling with the vocal melody and lyrics for that song any tips?. On the bright side, once that's done I might be able to record it as live session on both audio/video. As always, great video.

    • @HackMusicTheory
      @HackMusicTheory  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amazingly amazing!!! Thanks for the update, Pradich, we're pumped that you're joining us on this 1song/month journey! Regarding writing a melody and lyrics for your song. If your harmony is pretty wild, which it sounds like it is, then I'd definitely explore all the naughty melodic movements of one semitone, where you go from a diatonic note to an unexpected non-diatonic note, that always sounds thrilling! Then be sure to bring in some big melodic jumps for drama, as well as balancing the aforementioned semitones. Regarding lyrics, I've actually got an in-depth hack for writing lyrics in my Songwriting & Producing PDF, which you can check out here: RevolutionHarmony.com/Books. Hope that helps, my friend! Take care and talk soon. Ray :)

    How do you know which note represents which drum part?

  • @mugwump565
    @mugwump565 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question : I'm not using reaper, so maybe that's the problem here, but when you copy the bass line to the drums it looks like you end up with fewer drum hits than the number of bass notes you started with. What's going on? I'm using FL Studio 12...
    Thanks, great stuff - I signed up for the apprenticeship. Looking forward to getting it.

    • @daleonov

      Hey Karaoke Apocalypse, thanks for watching and connecting, much appreciated! @@HackMusicTheory Hey! Thanks a lot for your reply :) This may sound silly, but I'm not making any music, just a gearhead who likes to make noise... I find the whole music making process too daunting and my span of attention is too short to put something together, I'm afraid... I just hook things up and get lost in sonic worlds, which is fun enough for me. But I love learning about the technical side of things, which help me appreciate the music I listen to (glitch, baroque, grunge, acid, etc.) I must admit your lessons are the easiest to digest I've seen so far and even make me wanna try to actually put something together :)
