    EDM and future bass tracks have overused 'machine gun' snare drum roll build ups so much they've become boring and very predictable. I've noticed that dance music song verses nowadays are sometimes very short as they're in a huge rush to get to the build up, the drop and the chorus. It never used to be like this. A lot of thought and imagination is needed to avoid these cliches and not sound corny.
    If I do snare rolls I try to alternate snares panned left then right with some center placed kick drums. This sounds like a mad drummer and sounds good in headphones. For even extra spice add a carefully placed reversed snare in there too (but don't over do 'glitch' effects like this too much). Low to high toms that go from left to right in the stereo field is another good tip. It sounds big and like we're bashing the toms in front of us from left to right.

      djdrwatson fully agree on its overuse. Spot on.

    • @augusto7681
      @augusto7681 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree about the overuse too. The other option is create music without build up and create just a chilling vibe like "Havanna" and "Feels" by Calvin Harris (these music dont have an explosive chorus). If the build up is needed you can substitute the snare fill with crazy sound effects or just use the tom to break the rythm then go back to the other.

    I'm a drummer and I make my drum beats with midi in logic pro first, then I learn them with my acoustic kit to play in the band im in. It sort of feels like I'm cheating because I accidentally stumble upon cool sounding fills and stuff, so it's not like I'm really coming up with it all in my head.

    • @HackMusicTheory
      @HackMusicTheory  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey PacketSmasher, thanks for watching and connecting! That's cool that you use Reaper too :)
      Regarding virtual instruments, it depends on your budget. We recommend Native Instruments as being the best value for money. Their Komplete Essentials is a great starting point, and only a small financial commitment: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-11-select That bundle does have drums, but if you're looking for fancier drums, we use ToonTrack EZ Drummer: www.toontrack.com/ezdrummer-line and we use their Dream Pop expansion: www.toontrack.com/product/dream-pop-ezx Also, for fancier synth sounds, we use Massive, which is truly Massive (not just a clever name haha!): www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths/massive And the bass guitar we use is: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/guitar/scarbee-jay-bass The piano we use, which is absolutely gorgeous and we highly recommend it, is: www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keys/the-grandeur And lastly, we recently started using EastWest's Composer Cloud, which gives you access to an immense library of sounds for a monthly subscription, you can check it out here: www.soundsonline.com/composercloud As I say though, if you just want a great all-in-one bundle to get started, then Komplete Essentials is the way to go, then you can slowly start upgrading to better sounds as you progress and discover what sounds you like and don't like. Hope this helps! Until next time, take care and happy music making :)

    • @Cyb3rTechGuy
      @Cyb3rTechGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome thank you very much for the insight! I agree that the Komplete Essentials would be a great place to start. For two reasons, as a pianist I am getting back into music so I am re-learning everything. And although I would really like to get into the fancier stuff I don't think I am quite there yet. Slow progression and moving up the scale so to speak would be a great place to start and Komplete Essentials looks like the place to start. Second reason I want to take some of my originals and spice them up. I think Komplete Essentials would help me with that as with any song there is always room to grow and improve. My ultimate goal is to get into EDM but I'm not leaving my piano music behind. Once again thank you for your help and tips and thank you for the videos tutorials and books you have made available for purchase on your website.
