Storybook architecture sometimes called Fairy Tale or Hansel and Gretel has as sense of playfulness and whimsy. Most seemed straight out of an old-world village with intentionally uneven roofs, cobblestone,doors and windows which may look reused and heavy beams. The roof Lines of Storybook buildings often have uneven shingles designed to evoke straw thatch and have prominent gables. The style has its roots in California noticeably in Los Angeles and Oakland California. In the 1920s and 1330s the style was at its peak and you may find examples of it in your own hometown.
From the Oakland Public Library website:
“The original 900 square foot Storybook style library was built in 1930 in the Oakland hills, about half a mile from the emerging shopping district known as Montclair Village.
The library land and the original building were a gift from Chauncey W. Gibson, a wealthy businessman who dedicated his fortune to supporting charities for women and children.
The Storybook building style was suggested by Mrs. Charles Fisher, wife of the chairman of the Homes and Children’s Alliance. Mrs. Fisher thought this kind of building would be cozy and welcoming to the public.”
