As someone in art school right now i just love how he has all these skills character design, storytelling, sculpture, typography with some graphic design, he way he intertwines all these skills to create some beautiful cohesive and meaningful work is amazing
It's perfectly fine to refer to him as James Genius. I interviewed JJ way back in 2003 and he was kind enough to even provide the cover for my magazine. That was when he was still painting covers for DC Comics (primarily Fables). Was sad to see him leave comics, but I know he preferred single images over sequential storytelling. I'll never be able to afford one of his extraordinary paintings, but I do still have a production sketch he did for Chris Nolan's Batman Begins film. I paid $30 for it.
Such a cool story. Where can we find that cover? I believe James was still in art school around that time. Always a trip to see his younger work/early career as an illustrator!
What a gift this video is! Absolutely amazing to hear James speak about his extraordinary art and process. I was lucky enough to go and see the show in person and am now even more of an admirer. 😊
Not being able to connect with certain aspects of one's culture definitely resonates with me. You can see the beautiful dedication and mastery in James' work. I've followed his art for the past 20 years and it's amazing to see how his painting style has evolved over the years.
Am in awe of the dedication, patience, authenticity & talent I see in this work. My favourite piece is Dragon Girl. Thank u for sharing this with wannabe artists like me.
Scribe and The Bear absolutely my new favourites - James’s work is so refreshing to view. A new favourite Artist for me and hope to see his work in person ❤
I like the surrealism in thought and image, yet each item in the painting are real in their own right and are very rigidly correct graphically .. You can read many things into the imagery as viewers react to the imagery differently based on what's goung on within them.. The colours are ice-cream beautiful and at the same time disconcerting... Nice works..
I found J Jean works somewhen in 2018, then i became fan of BTS, and in 2021 James Jean did collab with them he made seven huge paintings representing each member of the group. I am amazed with his imagination and color work. Also his layers are so complex and he uses enamel also if i am not mistaken...it is always a treat when he posts speed paint video
I might have missed it, but is this Arylic paint? Also GREAT SHOW thank you! I love your work!!!❤😊 Also love you show your thumbnails to your paintings! And choosing your pallette! I hope you get better with your Mandarin.❤
If you know James Jean, you know he hates explaining his paintings. “I like to let the work speak for itself.” He said once. So you know this was really hard for him to go on a rant about his work 😂😂 😂
Your art is amazing. Just love your style. You don´t need all those stains, dots, grunge textures on all those big beautiful paintings. Sometimes less is more:) I am a perfectionist and it hurts when i get stains, spots on my clothing haha.
i think he adds and keeps those marks because they support his theme of miscommunication : the imperfect within what appears to be perfect but is filled with ‘flaws or quirks” ?
now that i know you have a comics background it makes sense, i was going to say i can see there is definitely nothing pertaining to the world of academic " fine art ", the art history cannon of art. These works do indeed seem like blown up versions of little comics, i can't help try to encourage immersion into the world of fine arts education, and not be afraid of it. I grew up loving comics and drawing as a North American kid and really was completely clueless about fine art, till post secondary education, there, where i learned of the big ol' world of "art " and the world of painting proper, for lack of a better description, that exists. I think a lot of people with a more graphic art background reject the "art" world, but if you actually are immersed in the cannon of art, it eventually succeeds in opening your eyes and soul, that is if it doesn't totally offend you or disinterest you outright, but on that note, i think it might be a good conclusion of thoughts to say that fine arts at it's best can tend toward the " spiritual" in art, to borrow Kandinsky's term, whereas i think the graphic arts tradition possibly leans more towards fashion or industry : )
@@GodLovesComics i’ve noticed that people say that maybe they just want likes I don’t get it. They’ll talk about all the negative comments and then you looked down there and there’s nothing and this has been happening a lot lately so that’s very strange.
@@melissakennedy5897 Yeah that one may have been bait. I do often see streamers/youtubers (or their fans) complain about all the negative comments and there will be a thousand filled with drooling praise and maybe one mildly critical one if that. It never fails.
Feel like I'm the only one in the comments that didn't like this. The style seems too familiar right now and the color palette seems just trendy. Don't get me wrong, they're stunning, but it feels like it's (especially the characters) lacking soul/realness. Contempory art has served it's purpose and now feels stale. This is like new disney compared to old disney. The new disney movies are good, great even at times, but they don't hold a candle to the old classics with real villians and hand drawn love and charm. Just my thoughts.. I did like the last sculpture though.
If he struggles to connect with meaning making what is stopping him from going home and why doesn’t he empower himself to learn his native language? He should stay for a couple of years in Taiwan and immerse himself in his culture.
@@baumhan So has many others including AI. Nothing wrong with a winning formula but do we can it fine art? Or do we call it original art? I don't think so my friend.
Granted, James Jean did work on covers for The Fables comic series so you're not wrong about the comic-illustrative look of his paintings. If you're questioning his credentials as a fine artist, you can see his evolution from a more academic style to the more stylized works in present. His technical prowess and understanding of colors is comparable to the draftsmen of the old from the sketches he did in 2008-09.
always enjoy James describing the contexts of his works:) My fav is the students piece toward the end.

His sense of color is amazing
I love this work of art, he is one authentic colourist, good to see new art with so much meaning, connection and beauty, thank you.
So incredible 😮 and the way he closes is so funny to me 😂 "i think thats it"

When he was in my city, I had a chance to meet him. He made a sketch of me. I have kept that sketch and taken it with me wherever I lived.
Beautiful

I am so happy to discover today this great artist with an incredible creativity, who is also a true man of culture. I feel lucky 🌱
James's work is very complicated but I love his creativity and the colors he use. It's fascinating
This work is incredible. I’ve never seen any work like this before. His work is worth traveling for, wow.
I am á hugeeeeeee fan of your stunning work❗️👏💯👌🏾❤️🔥 Thanks for sharing and explaining your pieces!
The color palettes of James Jeans works always amaze me. Such a refined and innovative application of something so simple.
Absolutely inspired work. Each one tells a story. The technique and style is clean and full of beauty even when expressing something sad.
Impressive and poetic, Love it!

True legend! 🔥
so unique. i love this style. i love it.
Yay! This is good stuff! Reminds me of Kenny Scharf, a little bit of Keith Haring and Stephen Sprouse and of course Walt Disney!
Nice! Beautiful Art

Really enjoyed this tour and the detailed explanations of the work process, hidden meanings and ideas. Very interesting!

I remember when he just burst into the art world. God, what a time to be alive!🤩😄
Wonderful . Thank you.
I'll go to one of your exhibitions one day one of the few legendary illustrators/fine artists of our time
The GOAT !
Bravo 👏🏼

When he just makes art, but needs to do a presentation so he is just winging it and explaining whatever he is seeing lmao

or Art Nouveau
With how much floral motif James Jean uses, I think it's intentional
used to love james' stuff until he sold out to the nft grift 🤮 traitor

Ppl will overlook art like this but call an entire canvas of a shade a blue a “masterpiece” 🤡

The silver sculpture of the kid really is cheesy but the paintings are cool.
Viscously overrated coloring book artist glazes paint by numbers histhe assistants actually paint. Another monetized sketchbook scam. Razzle dazzle
Comic for Kids.
It's as if a video gamer/comic book fan just got out of art school. Or he just fished ideas out of an AI program.
