Can I PAINT a chair to look like LEATHER?!

  • CAN IT BE DONE?! I take a free chair destined for the dump and paint it and wax it to see if I can DIY it so it looks like leather! See if I was successful!
    I took inspriation on this one from @diy.danie and @lonefoxhome as well as @jamieandsarah . There were lots of twists and turns and bumps along the way!
    To paint a chair to look like leather, you don't need too many things. First I chose to clean the chair with my Bissell upholstery cleaner/vacuum, then I painted it mixing together 3 of Annie Sloan brand chalk paints. I used Arles, Honfleur, and Barcelona Orange, but I should have definitely bought way more paint. So it goes.
    Then I put on Annie Sloan clear wax and finally buffed it out and added some texture and accent with Annie Sloan dark wax (brown). I am shocked by the results! This didn't turn out perfectly and it doesn't look exactly like leather but I am happy with the results of painting this chair!

    I think watering the paint down and using it more like a dye on that type of fabric would have worked. I saw a video where someone dyed a vintage velvet couch from yellow to teal using paint. I appreciate your channel bc you take chances and show what works / doesn’t. ✨

    • @KnowCanDo
      @KnowCanDo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bravo Clara! You worked so hard on this chair and were transparent about the results. I've been debating doing a chair for 6 months and now am so glad I watched you get what you consider mixed results. I couldn't help but wonder if a stiff material vs. a velour type would have worked better? Thanks again!

    • @KnowCanDo
      @KnowCanDo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you do any sanding? Sanding between coats and before waxing makes it much smoother to the touch and gives it a nicer finish I think. Velvet sucks up paint BIGTIME. Smoother fabrics are much easier to do and on the budget.

    • @ginapeterson5338
      @ginapeterson5338 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree completely! Everything I have seen and read, says you have to sand in order to knock down the pile or the weight of the fabric. Perhaps trying this project again on a different chair? Either way, I love watching your videos!

    i have a chair that looks to be this material (& color family & sort of style!) - its in great condition overall, but does need a good clean just to get dust & marks & such out from previous owners as well as just smelling like a chair that’s been in storage for a bit.
    so! i have a question, in case you have any advice! :) **or if anyone in these comments has advice on this, i welcome your experiential wisdom! :) -
    everything i read says to not get velvet/velour wet (or not really wet at least) & to not really use wet vacuum nozzles or steamers etc bc it can crush the pile & make it look worse. the fabric of my chair doesn’t have a tag, but it’s like a synthetic velour or something. i did a few test spots with a solution & wet vac & then gentle scrubbing patch w microfiber cloth & none of it looks great. :/ so im wondering if i just go for it - using an upholstery cleaner with the wet vac (& not brushing to get clean). ive also debated using my clothing steamer (super similar to yours) on low heat, instead of wet vac (or maybe after wet vac treatment?).
    ok! asking question for real this time! :D - did you notice the look of your fabric after you cleaned it? did it look matted or crushed? i’m nervous it will discolor or put lines/marks all over the chair or scuff/‘fuzzy up’ the fabric so it looks more worn, but so far my more ‘gentle’ approach isn’t changing a thing for the better. ha.
    ok thats all! any thoughts from your experience? thanks for reading!!

    • @KnowCanDo
      @KnowCanDo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh interesting! you know, I'm not sure. I have cleaned probably 20-30 chairs that are all different variations of velour/velvet etc. I have a playlist on this channel of all the chairs I've flipped so make sure to check that out -- maybe you'll find one that seems close to the one you have? Let me know how it goes!

    It looks alright albeit not leather but at least you had a good go! 😊
    Did you spray the surface first with water? I did a chair recently (not for the leather effect but to change the colour from purple to light blue) it worked well spraying it before applying paint. You need to continually spray throughout

    • @KnowCanDo
      @KnowCanDo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you should have watered down your paint, and dampened the fabric more before applying the paint to make it a dye. After the paint dried, go back and lightly sand it before waxing. I think you may have gotten a better result.
