Bleaching wood furniture? Try THIS instead!
I know you've thought about bleaching wood furniture, and maybe you've even googled how to bleach wood furniture with household bleach.
Can it be done? Probably. But today I'm sharing an alternative way to lighten wood without bleach. This is much safer, and uses products that were MADE to be used on wood and on furniture. Hopefully this can help you lighten wood or lighten wood furniture that you have at home, and can give you a modern, updated look to old orangey oak or other old wood furniture or kitchen cabinets that you have!
What I'm showing to day, is how to lighten wood without bleach using a white washing technique. We're making a paint wash with a 3:1 ratio of water to paint, and using a chalk-style furniture paint to do so!
Want to see this process in action? Here's one of my most favorite successes with this project:
And there's a whole playlist where you can see me lightening wood without bleach and using a paintwash:

MCM Dresser Restoration/Makeover (Frustrating!) 😂

In this Mid-century modern dresser makeover, I had to be extremely patient. BUT when all was said and done, I think it turned out really well :) What do you think? Let me know what you think of this MCM furniture makeover down below :...

love you for jumping straight in & telling us what we all came here for! i watched another video that was 20 minutes long for this same exact topic & had to fast forward soooo much.
The liquid patina, where can I buy? I'm from Romania, where can I find it? Do you think I could paint the mattress on the toddler bed like this? By the way, the haircut is wonderful, it looks great on you!
Do not paint a mattress I do t think that’s would be safe.
I was going to say you could probably get $300 maybe $400 for it but then saw this video was 2 years ago! How much did you end up selling it for?
Sorry. Why would anyone want to make wood look bleached? I like the natural color the wood is, noticing the floor it is sitting on. Beachy? Meh. Give me original grain & the color nature made. Neutral stain to protect & good to go. Gray oak? No thank you.
Why would anyone want to make natural wood look bleached? Becuase people have different styles and ideas and preferences. A lot of people want a bleached wood look and this is safer and easier than using bleach. We all have different styles- cheers to that!
We ran a commercial furniture strip and refinish business, Admittedly we used dichloromethane as a stripper ( dangerous stuff) it is very effective but not for home use. To clean it off we used a power washer. Give it a try it works really well but be careful of any loose veneers. Then just let it airdry outside if you can. Try stripping a smaller area rather than doing the whole piece when using citri strip.
What type of stain did you use? I bought penetrating before I stripped off the paint and found that the top of my dresser was veneer and now I don't know if I have the right stain. Thanks. The night stand is lovely.
Pretty!
I'd rather use bleach
TSP is a water pollutant. Not good.
You did a fantastic job. This piece looks considerably better than the spray-on factory finish. You definitely took this piece to a higher level. Well done!!
I know this is an old vid but when you have time, can you tell me what is the deciding factor when deciding between bleaching wood vs.you paint washing. technique. I noticed the pros don’t normally do the bleach. It seems like it’s a cheap easy introductory way to lighten furniture. What do you think. I love this video. Soooo helpful.
Now, you need a room update!
How many coats?
This paper jig is genius!!!!!! Why have I never thought of that?!?
Looks beautiful
The veneer chips are easy to repair! Makes a more perfect job!
It's stunning!
Great Job!
Looking to refinish my kitchen cabinets. Can you use polyurethane over a chalk paint wash? Or is wax the only way to seal it?
You should be fine
What brand and model is the sander? thanks
I only use Kutzit to strip my furniture. It’s liquid and I use steel wool and wipe it off with paper towels. I leave the paper towels out to dry then throw them away. It’s soooo much easier than gloopy stripper.
I love this! What color paints did you use?
I hate hand sanding BUT it’s always worth it at the end ❤
Miss u and your furniture flips..😢
I would use a quality varnish remover instead of sanding. Try a 00 steel wool to remove the gunk. Afterwards clean it up with solarine
Wow Wonderful 👏👏👏
Ditch the citristrip and just use acetone to get the finish off. I apply it with a merlon-type pad, scrub a little and quickly wipe off with a paper towl.
Love your channel! Thank you
Really nice finish
Is this method good for a dining table ??
Pretty table! You did a beautiful job, thank you for your tutorial.😁💛
You are so welcome! Thanks!
excellent work Really is beautiful but the one other thing I would've done is removed the cushion and replaced it with a new one
Can you still do the paint/water without sanding the whole thing down?
You could try it! But this had old finish on top of it. The paint mixture needs to sink into the wood grain. Finish is an impermeable layer that would make it hard for the paint mixture to adhere or sink in.
@@KnowCanDo what type of sandpaper did you use when you sanded the table?
Did you not clean it first with alcohol as u didn't sand it
Looks so good! Thanks for sharing!
wow that looks ugly
You’re not holding the scraper correctly
I refinished some of my wood natural birch wood kitchen cabinets. I definitely don’t like the yellow look so I sanded them down as much as I could. I still would like to get rid of all the yellow although it looks better. Next time I will try this. Thanks.😊
Safety First! Great idea for telling everyone about products to keep yourself safe when refinishing furniture. I did not use proper procedures for this over the years and now I have a really bad chemical sensitivity. It's a wonder I don't have cancer. And the person below who commented about being careful with the rags used is absolutely correct. I never leave used rags indoors. You have done a great job on this dresser! It is beautiful! I just LOVE IT!!!
26 years of being a musician, but it seems that you are just 20 years old. 😊. Nice work though, I am talking about the wood finish.
Did you sand completely down to the wood, or just a scuff sand?
Everyone, repeat after me, always with the grain! Not sure how this piece did not get ruined.
I love Katie Scott1 I like your video too, real life!
🎼 Clara sister, sister of notes! This is exquisite video! Thanks utterly much! 🫡💛
Sun Devils!! Love this DIY, I'm about to refinish a 50's bedroom set, getting my mind prepped 😂
I can't tell you how many times this video came into my feed and I passed on it because as a woodworker and furniture maker of over 25 years I am so sick of seeing videos of people using OVEN CLEANER to strip wood. I honestly thought this was one of those videos. I like putting furniture or woodworking videos on in the background while I'm in my shop. This video played and I was so pleased to see that there was NO OVEN CLEANER. This video is right on the money. You did everything right from start to finish and I just want to thank you for putting informative content out that doesn't mislead people and doesn't destroy furniture. 👏👏👏👏
Thanks so much! I also have a video about how effed up and dangerous the oven cleaner trend is/was haha. I hated that too!
Incredible. Does the finish need sealed?
I didn’t but I think it could be wise to otherwise you have to oil it a lot
Thanks to Biden/Kamala's inflation I can no longer afford to buy paint.
Sorry to hear that you’re struggling.
Nice Nice Nice
I love how it turned out. I wouldn’t say it’s identical to if you bleached the wood, it’s a different effect but equally beautiful.
