Bleaching wood furniture? Try THIS instead!
I know you've thought about bleaching wood furniture, and maybe you've even googled how to bleach wood furniture with household bleach.
Can it be done? Probably. But today I'm sharing an alternative way to lighten wood without bleach. This is much safer, and uses products that were MADE to be used on wood and on furniture. Hopefully this can help you lighten wood or lighten wood furniture that you have at home, and can give you a modern, updated look to old orangey oak or other old wood furniture or kitchen cabinets that you have!
What I'm showing to day, is how to lighten wood without bleach using a white washing technique. We're making a paint wash with a 3:1 ratio of water to paint, and using a chalk-style furniture paint to do so!
Want to see this process in action? Here's one of my most favorite successes with this project:
And there's a whole playlist where you can see me lightening wood without bleach and using a paintwash:

    I can't tell you how many times this video came into my feed and I passed on it because as a woodworker and furniture maker of over 25 years I am so sick of seeing videos of people using OVEN CLEANER to strip wood. I honestly thought this was one of those videos. I like putting furniture or woodworking videos on in the background while I'm in my shop. This video played and I was so pleased to see that there was NO OVEN CLEANER. This video is right on the money. You did everything right from start to finish and I just want to thank you for putting informative content out that doesn't mislead people and doesn't destroy furniture. 👏👏👏👏

    @know can do thanks so much for the video. My question is - since the chalk paint is water-based, does the chalk paint fade or wash off when you spill liquid or water on the table? How long would it stay or last if water marks keep happening from a water glass or drink spills? Thanks

    Highly highly suggest not using citristrip- strip well all the way. If it goes past the stain color, it’ll darken the wood down through the veneer

    No primer? Can we get an update on how well the paint stayed on? I can imagine that a solvent-free paint would not stick to the glossy finish, as you stated at roughly 4 minutes in.

    It really turned out well. It is an interesting technique that I may try in the future, since I have some mid-century modern furniture that I would like to flip. I would be interested to hear how well this project has held up. You didn’t mention doing a scuff sand on the desk. Especially given that it is a slick, laminate surface, I don’t think I would personally be comfortable skipping this step. Bottom line, after you went back and fixed the edges, it does look great. Considering this is the first time you have done a project like this, and given the available tools, a big 👍🏻!!! (I don’t critique on an easy scale, so that is high praise.)

    Whenever you use a rag with an oil based product lay it to dry outside on the driveway. When dry you can throw it away in your outdoor trash can. Oily cloths can spontaneously combust in a short time if just thrown away without drying first.

    @chrisp.76 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    When applying Citrustrip I believe you don’t want to spread very thin. Using a metal putty knife is better because you can press harder. To keep from damaging the wood, grind or sand the sharp corners off. On a piece that has the varnish or paint off you don’t need to start with anything lower than 120 grit. If adding stain don’t go higher than 180 grit or you can burnish the wood and the wood won’t take the stain as well.
