- So how exactly do we access the HDD in our Super Slim PS3's? It's actually so easy that this video is rendered useless. But thanks for watching anyway!
If you own a 12GB PS3 and would like to know where to get a Mounting Bracket/Caddy for an HDD you're putting in, you can buy one here:

I'm thinking of getting a super slim PS3 with the smallest memory, then buy a 1TB hard drive to stick in it and pay the same as what you would get for a 500GB PS3.
I just bought the super slim, and I was so afraid of breaking the case too. This is definitely helpful to those of us upgrading from an old model plagued by the YLOD. Thank you!
Yes, you can. I just (literally 5 minutes ago) upgraded my 12gb PS3 with a 320gb hard drive I had lying around. Super easy, took me only a a few minutes. Make sure you get the mounting bracket as indicated in the video's description. I bought the exact same one and it works perfectly.
Hi, I'm glad you like the video!
1. By bracket, I'm assuming you're talking about the metal holster for the HDD. The Super Slim model does need a specific holster which you can find online to buy.
2. When you upgrade the HDD of a PS3, you do want to back up your data. When a new HDD is put into a PS3, the PS3 will reformat the HDD. So you want to get your data off your old one. Then you can restore the data safely on the new one.
You can absolutely do that, just make sure that you back up your data to an external hard drive BEFORE taking your HDD out. When you put the HDD in your new PS3, the new PS3 won't let you use it until you format the HDD. So that way when you format it, you can restore all your data from that external hard drive.
Well, a PS3 using SSD actually doesn't add that much speed/performance. The SSD is definitely faster, but I mean, really you are not going to notice much of a difference when using the traditional HDD. Certain games that have to always read the Blu-ray will load environments quicker, but even then, other games don't have to read the Blu-ray all the time, thus no matter what you're using, it's the same. So I wouldn't worry too much about speed. Glad my video helped!
I mention this right at the end of this video! Don't worry. You can still use your HDD. Just grab Sony's firmware from their website, and put it on a USB Drive or whatever you may have and follow the instructions your PS3 gives you. You can still use your HDD.
ALL PS3's use a 2.5 inch Hard Drive. That has NEVER changed, however, the caddy's, (The metal holder for the HDD) is different depending on the PS3's. If you search the comments below, I tell others that you can just put the HDD in the Super Slim without the holder, it just wouldn't be stuck in place. Which is easily fixable by using non-static carboard to fill in the open areas.
Yes they do. I've been using 7200 rpm HDD's in my PS3's for years. They even save a few seconds in certain games when loading.
Just like to point out, if you had trouble opening the slot as i did i used the non knife side of a butter knife against the end closest to the power button and pushed like that came of with a bit of force, nothing to excessive though.
Yes it does. As I say in the video, consider backing up your data because any HDD being put into a PS3 needs to be formatted.
1) 500GB is largest recommended, TB's seem unstable (some do/most don't)
2) Yes, as long as you only store content that is not "locked" (DLC, etc.)
3) Can't say for sure as haven't played/tried, but am assuming the 2 networks have no way to "link" to each other (haven't heard of a single instance yet, at least).
Hope that's a good set of answers for you/sorry if not.
You can, the problem with that though is that whenever a PS3 gets a new HDD put in it, the PS3 cannot use the HDD until it is formatted. So if you want to use your old HDD, you definitely could, you just need to back up your data so you can restore it once it's back in the new PS3.
So why doesn't the 12-Gig model already have one of these brackets?
Clover Goldngreen no it doesn't
Farhan S Read what the op said again he didn't ask if it came with it he asked why it doesnt
10 years too late but its because it uses flash memory and doesn't come with an hdd so no point in them shipping it with the mount included.
The side panel that you should remove is on the disc reading side. I wish he would have mentioned that as I almost broke my case trying to pry the case off on the wrong side. Though i am grateful nonetheless that he uploaded a video showing how to change the hdd.
i upgraded a month ago from 80 to 160 gig so simple. the usb upgrade caught me out though youtube vids i watched never mentioned this, your the 1st ive seen that has so well done on that.
You could just pop in an HDD. The only problem is you don't have that mount/holder for the HDD. I know that some people have just been putting the HDD in, and then filling in the extra space with non-static cardboard and it seems to do the trick. That way the HDD is secure and not flailing around in there.
I can't open my ps3
No, it should prompt you to format it once it's in/system's 1st turned on. If you format it beforehand, it may still give this prompt (as only the original HDD provided w system doesn't/ie, another PS3 drive already formatted can't just be "slipped in" & have onboard data/saves be used-it'll give you the prompt even if it's fresh out of a working system).
No problem! Glad I could help!
While doing it that way would be possible, I wouldn't recommend it. You'd have to change your old HDD to an external one, pull all your files off, and then copy them over manually, which sometimes won't work because certain PS3 files need to be transfered via Sony's built in methods. You'd save more time backing up. It's only a few hours. Plus it depends how much data you're really transferring.
The size is 2.5 inch just like all other PS3's. Have you tried looking on Ebay for the right holders? I wouldn't even bother looking for one, you really don't need it. As you can just put non-static cardboard in there to keep the HDD from flailing around.
Pretty much. I'm sure there's some random ass HDD that is perhaps by a different brand that might not work. But if you're going with trustable brands, they'll basically all work.
Yes-this is actually the largest recommended drive to use. Anything larger than that starts to get very dicey/hit & miss.
What's the name of metal that hold hdd cause i got ps3 with no hdd and metal thing that hold it inside. If we buy hdd internal does they usually give that metal thing or we need to buy separately? Tq
Yes you can. The hdd can be used as an external hdd if you combine it with an external hard drive enclosure.
So i have a 40GB model PS3 Super Fat since it was released, it got the yellow light of death about a month ago. If i get the new Super Slim, I can install my 40GB HDD from the original PS3 into this 1 & it should work fine?
Yes, you should be able to use a SSD. As long as it fits into the system you should be fine.
Trust me it's left. Apply pressure with your thumbs and slide the panel left. It will snap out, and you can lift it up to.
You can find USB-SATA rigs to turn a drive into a "slave" drive (usually does SATA-IDE, as well). DL the FAT 32 prog/install, plug said rig into USB/hook up to removed SATA drive to the fitting & it should go. "Locked" content won't go, though.
The 80GB "locked" data (DLC, etc.) is gone if the system's dead, but other data will still be there. If you want the 80GB data to your slim you can find USB-SATA "slave" rigs to put all the remaining data in the slim. If you are talking about getting a new one, then you can do the data transfer utility.
I'm from the future and I upgraded it to a 500gb SSD and it runs like sonic
Thnx. You are properly the first person to explain this with out talking in geek language
so that metal slot come with the PS3? I don't have one in mine.
I think I’d it is 12gb, it doesn’t come with it.
@@SoAlive92 I have a 500gb superslim, does it come with it?
Yes, but u need a caddy if u own the 12gb model. In the description u can see where to buy it.
It is but the hdd wont be fully secure and you dont want to risk breaking your new hdd. Recommend buying a mounting bracket
actually, if you are positioning your PS3 vertically, There's no need of mounting bracket. You simply put something slim (kartong, wood etc.) between HDD and ps3 and it will run good. :)
Did you even watch the video? It is a tutorial after all, I show and say everything in the video.
Pretty sure it's a 2.5. TB HD's are apparently hit & miss, with some saying it works/others saying it doesn't. The largest "safe" size SONY rep's will advise is 500GB. (Apparently it needs to use something called a "500 Kb-block system" {can't re exact wording} in the HD, which may be the cause of some of the TB failures). Hope that helps!
(you can also try an external USB for save data, etc as long as is not "locked" content but again some ext drives have power/operating issues so not all work)
I'm going to get a ps3 super slim from my local game store for 70$ on my birthday which is very close. If it dosent have a hard drive then I will give it the storage it deserves.
yes you can use your old hdd, however you'll need the bracket to mount the hdd to. the 12gb ps3 system DOES NOT come with this bracket, I got it off of amazon for 12 bucks
if you cant get the cover to come off check your model number it may not be the same. Mine was a tab on the bottom i had to pop off and the screw and hard drive are located there
Just about any USB storage device will work, but hard drives need to be formatted FAT32 instead of NTFS (which is the default format for most USB HDDs unless they are specifically made for Macs, which use HFS/HFS Plus). However, on Windows XP and higher, the built-in formatter only supports formatting FAT32 partitions up to 32GB. If you need a larger FAT32 partition, you need a third party formatting utility or, oddly enough, a Mac (the "MS-DOS' option in Disk Utiltiy on Mac is FAT32)..
The moment i unscrew my hdd will it immediately delete all my data?
No
Yes because there is no HDD in 12gb models, they use flash memory/SSD memory, hence why you need the mounting bracket.
(but you would likely want to add the 80GB files via said USB "slave" rig 1st, THEN do the slim-superslim transfer utility-as it overwrites the drive it's landing in, so you can't "stack" it in &'ll regret it if you try...alternatively you could try the transfer then the "slave" on superslim, but likely the slim files are more recent/up-to-date)
You do know that YLOD was happening to people who were using normal Sony-provided HDDs right? In a well ventillated, cool area the supposed overheating issue you are bringing up does not exist. My Ps3 is about 4 feet from the vent and my g/f always runs the AC so that area of the room hovers around 60 degrees Farenheit and plenty of airflow. At any rate I decided not to put the 7200 in because I did not feel like re-downloading a bunch of games I got digitally.
Thanks, I appreciate that man!
Thanks a bunch for the video! I was getting upset because the only videos I can find are ones that show you how to install the HDD, but not formatting the system once it is turned on. I am used to updating pcs/laptops and I know once you insert a new HDD there is a whole other process to go through haha. Infinite thank yous.
I don't have any like that blue screw at start !! Does that make a change !?
You are being told it's 500GB because the manufacturer counts 1kB as 1000B, while it's actually 1024B, so you lose 24B at every promised kB therefore making it as follows: 500 GB = ~466 GB.
PS3 will, but be careful w a 1TB-some work/many don't. 500GB is largest recommended HDD size, anything bigger starts running into percentages of success. Don't think you can return HDD's after opening the pack they come in.
Exact same process as this, but the 12GB model doesn't come with the HDD bracket. You could probably DIY it, with some foam padding maybe, to make it secure.
I just bought the bracket though, in the UK it sells for £8. Maybe a little much for a bit of metal and some screws, but I thought I may as well get it for peace of mind.
Yes as u can see reading the description. But, u need to buy another "tool": the caddy.
Yes, you can definitely use that HDD. However, whenever a new HDD is put into a PS3, the PS3 requires you to format the HDD in order for it to work. So I'm assuming you wanted to keep your data, since it wouldn't make sense for you to downgrade the HDD that already comes in the Super Slim. Sad to here about your Yellow lighted PS3 man. Best of luck to you.
Okay so, if i install the new HDD to my PS3 super slim do i need to make a back up of the system? I've read that the back up need's to be done in older versions of the ps3 but not in the super slim version.
If we can remove the 12GB HDD with one from the old PS3 slim (as you say it bellow), I cant figure out why they sell a HDD mounting bracket...
yes u should buy amounting bracket
Visit your local computer or electronics store to find these screws.

4 flat head screws that attach the HD to bracket: M3x4x0.5mm thread pitch
1 flat head blue screw: M3x10x0.5mm thread pitch
Tough call. The 12 gig doesn't come with a caddy for the HDD, so you gotta get your own metal bracket, and they're crap (it's a downgrade to cut production costs while they wait to churn out the PS4). Do you know the owner/system history or is it just from some guy/site/store? If not sure bout the shape maybe do the 12G-but GET the $60 2yr extended warranty with it A.S.A.P (or at least BEFORE your 1-year stock is up). Bought my 250G March 20 2013 & malfunctioning already, overheat/shutdown etc.
With the 12g you need to buy Sony PlayStation 3 Replacement Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Mounting Bracket, which I just got form HMV for £8 then you need a 2.5 Hard drive.
Load times & FPS are the same, obviously if a game is on the HDD, it loads faster, For example, I played GT5 off the disk, took ages to load anything, loaded it onto the HDD & it was a lot faster.
I have a 7200rpm 500gb hdd that I used on my old fat ps3 & it worked fine
uhm...
I popped the lid off of my ps3 slim and there is no Blue Screw or anything holding a hard drive ?
Please help
I got a 1tb, it didn't work & I tried a number of things, like putting an update on a USB stick, that didn't work either. In the end, I had to put it in safe mode, it worked then & recognised the 1TB HDD. Benn working fine, put loads of stuff on without a problem.
I think so. Komplett in norway sells the 12 GB version (with all ordinary accessories), plus a HDD caddy and a 1 TB HDD if you pay extra for the TeryaByte Edition. So again i think so, but don't shoot me if i'm wrong :D
I know it is in norwegian, but here you got the link (Maybe you can use Goggle Translate or something to read the text.: goo(DOT)gl/4NiwG
Any way to upgrade the 12 GB model without having to wait for the adapter thingy to come out?
Yeah, the superslim BLOWS. I don't even think it has a fan...I bought mine on April 20th, 2013 & it already started buggering up, overheating/shutting itself off a day or two ago-what a piece of crap! Had other minor issues including lag & a screwup where the controller reads as empty IMMEDIATELY after unplugging it from a full recharge when system's powered (but not when it's shut off/then powered after charging). This is # 5 & the official end of my console purchasing days-you BLEW it, SCEA!
So after I entered mine, the screen to format the hard drive does not come up. What am I doing wrong?
Wait so default PS3 HDDs are 5400rpm? I always thought they were 7200.. :/
Yes it is unless you think you can fix ylod duo to overheating it run 30% more hot with 7200 if you want a fast hdd just get Seagate 1tb sshd it 5400 rpm hdd but works as fast as sata3 ssd best part it only $144 you get at walmart.
what size hdd does the super slim use ? when i search to buy one it comes up 2.5 inch but when i search to buy the caddy it comes up 5 inch
just insert the hdd and put something under it to make it stable :D I did it and its working with no problems at all... I have 8 games on it
Youll be able to get one off amazon. A 320gb hdd costs £32 with free delivery :)
THAT is really very interesting...to be honest I didn't look extremely deep into 1TB workarounds (seems to get sketchy/complicated in that pond). Very useful info-I'll have to check that out (what type of HDD did you use? Replication goes best following exact success). I've heard SSD's help cut load time/FPS rate (esp'ly on Skyrim/other such "laggy" games). Thank you very much for sharing that (any noticeable performance/load time boost at all? Just curious...)
Thanks for the Tutorial, just got GTAV after waiting 4hrs in line (midnight launch ftw) no room on PS3... /wrists!
Crazy how long gta V
Not really, you can use any SATA 2.5" hdd found in most laptops.
Can't I use the HDD from an external hard drive or something? Finding one for the ps3 is very hard (unless it's expensive)
how do u get the screws for the mounting bracket coz 12gb does not come with a HDD
hi i need help my 1th ps3 broke and my memory was in it.. then i got a new ps3....... how do i move the Data to the new ps3?
Im missing the tray that holds the drive itself
I didn't buy a bracket for my 12 GB PS3... I bought a HDD and put cardboard under it and it works :D I'm saving money lol
I got a 12 gb superslim today... Does it not come with the bracket like the slim models?!
I'm trying to use my old hdd that's filled with data from many games, but when i try to put the hdd inside the ps3, i have to delete all the files, and transfer the 12gb flash memory to the hdd, and i lose everything, can somone please help me with this????
Ok I tried your method to install my 500gb HDD from my Fat ps3 into the Super slim ps3. I occured a problem that the system wont operate well because it cannot run correctly. They ask to press the PS button to restart system.
Also, they ask if the system cant be restarted, the system partition of the storage must be reformated and must be reinstall. Connect storage media that contains update 4.21 and press start/select. Problem is, the system wont let me reformat my 500gb HDD it shows the msg.
The screws come with the PS3 HDD bracket.
Sorry, but did you say the PS3 does the format for you?
My last PS3 (old fat one) didn't, so I never got the chance to do this, but I have the super slim 12gb one & I want to put a 1tb one in now. Will I have to use my laptop or will the PS3 format it for me?
I'm using my fat ps3 hard drive in my 12g ps3 works with no problems at all apart from having to wedge it in so it don't fall out
Hm...my 250G CECH-4001B's pooched & I was trying to backup (other drive was too small to transfer swollen HDD), so tried messing w backups. I don't have a prog for FAT32 format, so got the PS3 to do it. get this-you can put the drive in it &'ll read/no format, but if you hook it up as an ext HDD via USB (I have a powered one to avoid underpowering USB port) it WON'T read ITSELF...the very thing it formatted and to FAT32 and recognizes when installed internally. Somewhat off-topic, but WEIRD...
im going to get a 1TB HDD for my mac and put the 500GB HDD in my PS3 do i have to format it before i put it into my ps3?
my ps3 slim broke so i got a 12 gb super slim today... Do i need to buy a bracket? or can i just buy a hd and put it in???????????????????
I bought a Samsung HN-M101MBB 1TB 5400rpm SATA 2.5 inch Internal Hard Drive, from Amazon, cost me £54.
The PS3 system crap takes up around 100gb for some reason on the 1Tb drives, but I have plenty to spare, so it's not a problem.
If you just bought the console and wanted to do a HDD upgrade straight away would you have to back up all your data? :)
Is it possible to take the Hard-Drive from the old slim , and simply replace it into the new Super-Slim PS3? I want to upgrade my playstation, and was thinking of getting the cheap 12GB flash version and swapping out the HDD's. Is this possible?
Nice vid.Shame the 12gig model doesn't come with the hard drive caddy tho.
The cover will not come off what model is yours
If I use the wrong hdd will it break my ps3? And can I just put the original hdd back in and it will work?
yes they are the same size
I just got a used PS3 Super Slim. While it only has 12GB of flash storage, I heard Super Slims always use SATA III (not SATA II). Without searching online, what's the largest hard drive size this console recognizes? I've heard 1.5TB, but has anyone successfully used a bigger one? I can't find a clear answer anywhere. I'm looking for someone who has tried a really big drive.
I have ps3 slim and super slim can I change the harddrive of the slim to the super slim?
