Hello eanxvii7610 👋 Thank you so much for your kind detailed feedback! 🙏 I’m glad you liked it. This video took some time to make but I wanted to help out if anyone else wants to do this upgrade as well 😊 Feedback like this motivates me to make more content.
Fortunately I swapped straight from the 12GB flash memory to a 512GB SSD so the PS3 could transfer the data itself. Means I don't know how HDDs do but the SSD clearly helps in the two Gran Turismo games and deleting and installing data is much faster than it was on flash memory. Also more space, that was my main reason especially as I had that PS3 since late 2013 as a kid and wanted an upgrade.
Hi Hayden! That's awesome. Do you remember what SSD brand you got? Nowadays it's more affordable than ever to do this. When the SSDs first came out it didn't make sense to invest so much money. But thanks to prices being decent now, the upgrade to SSD is worth it. I've rediscovered GT5 and GT6 lately and I am so glad the track loads are much shorter now compared to HDD times.
I put an SSD into my PS3 for my Dark Souls 2 game. That was in 2014! A Crucial 128gb.. It reduced loading times so much.. The SSD did cost 66 Euros in 2014. It was still some kind of luxury, however I used that PS3 with that SSD since last year until I sold it. Now I have 2 super slim models and I will of course put 2 SSDs inside of them. I am just waiting for those HDD trays from Ali Express..
It's especially with a CFW overclock that you see the biggest difference, especially with FTP transfer speeds when you transfer a game from your PC to the PS3 SSD remotely.
@@timtzs It's much better than that, transferring games from the PC to the PS3 using the FTP method. Right now, I'm transferring Metal Gear Solid Collection at a speed of 10.8 MB/s. With the FTP method, you can use the full potential of the PS3's network card, which is /100. 100/8 = 12.5 MB/s.
Not to mention the quality of life improvements due to less noise coming from the PS3 as the SSD has no seeks and the PS3 runs a little cooler on average based on what it says on my CFW PS3 anyway. It’s a worth while upgrade despite what many say. It’s not big, but all the little things add up
@@Shinssue When I read about that it almost put me off, I own the Phat version, Amazon had the SSD at almost half price, thought why not, although its running Sata2 mode, some games can load upto 2mins quicker, such as GTA5, from a spinny HDD its a huge difference, smooth home screen, but nothing like on a PS4 pro or PS5 experience.
@@Doyle69 good thing as well is it's far quieter and lower power consumption along with lower temps, this also will reduce pop in in many games as well and the delayed texture loading streaming in some so it's far worth it
GT6 really cloaks how much loading is involved with all the screen changes. They just stream the data and made use of slow blackout screens. Can't believe how slow the HDD is. Finally going to tackle modding my PS3 and will be using your guide for the SSD upgrade!
@@mattb9664 hi Matt 👋 I know right. The seconds that you save with an SSD do add up and make things more smoother. Even in games like Killzone 2 which loads mid level makes the loading more bearable. I hope your upgrade goes smoothly 👍😎
Thanks again! Just kicked it off! For the backup-Just as a note for folks with the old Western Digital MyBook 1TB- even once formatted to Fat32- it will not be recognized by PS3. I had to extract the bare drive, and use a 'dumb' Sata to USB2 sled I had, then reformat it again to Fat32. There is weird conflict with the WD MyBook Sata /power board..maybe something for WD's encryption is present in their chipset, regardless of whether it's used.
I have an overclocked Slim 2501a at 700/850 VS 500/650 stock and a 1TB SSD and GT6 loads very quickly. I never tried it without an SSD and overclock, but its much quicker than GT5 for loading with the same setup.
If you mod a normal slim with a hole right above the fan it reduces temps by a ton, at least if overclocked. For mine the fan speed went from 50% max to 31% max and the PS3 stays much cooler on top as well (Max temp set to 68C might lower it to 65C now). I used an 80mm fan intake guard and hot glue to attach that. Looks just fine
I used a 1TB WD Blue SSD (SA510 I think) I had laying around from my old PC. Not necessarily for the improved load times, but for the reduced heat output and power use on the aging power supply.
@@appwraithhey 🙂thank you for your feedback. It’s definitely worth for the reduced heat alone too. My super slim is really quiet ever since I put an ssd in.
That's a nice looking red PS3 super slim! Especially when it's new and shiny. I actually like some of the super slim consoles. They definitely do feel like they're cheaper made, especially comparing to the original fat models' premium look, but there's still a certain charm to their design. I bought the Metal Gear Rising edition PS3 SS and happy to have it in my collection. And I agree that paying about 20% to get about 10-20% faster load times is worth it. Nice video!
Hello Konstantine_c 👋 Thank you so much! 😊 Using an SSD is really the icing on the cake. I wouldn’t want to play Killzone or GT 5/6 without it any more 😎
Regarding the process of moving data from one disk to another you could always hook the original PS3 drive along with the new one on a single PC and clone it. I remember there being a tool dedicated to PS3 HDD's cloning.
Hi unlimitedslash! 👋 Thank you for your feedback. That is a way to do it as well though as far as I know you won't be able to increase the drive size this way. But if you want a 1:1 clone then this can be an option as well 🙂
No need to use third party tools to clone your old PS3 to a new one, once you have the SSD ready. The native way is to connect the two consoles using a normal network cable. Then go to the transfer option, not backup. Be sure to carefully read the information screens before doing any backup as shown in the video, or when you transfer from old to new console for details on what types of data that will not be copied. Also, check Sony's website page on this subject for more details. Some parts of a very few specific games will not be copied over, even with straight transfer. The benefit of doing a straight transfer instead of a backup and restore is that a backup omits some things that are included in a old- to-new direct transfer. Unrelated to this video, but might be useful to know: Copy protected save files can't be backed up to USB if your use that option. Using PS+ cloud if you have a subscription will include everything. I've seen games on my PS3 that would let you copy each actual save to USB, but not the game settings and your player profile. Another game would do the opposite.
@@LarsV62 But as you said this requires a second PS3, which as you might understand is not ideal, i personally was mentioning cloning, referring to cloning via a PC.
@@LarsV62 Hello 🙂 Thank you for the additional information. If you have two consoles this is also a good option. In my case I had no other choice since my OG PS3 YLODed. So a network transfer was sadly out of question.
@@SamDansCouch Isn't it possible to allow the partition to use all the available space? Like you do in Clonezilla when installing a new larger drive. I've done this already! Nice video! Think your the first video I have seen in a while how to backup your digital games. Yes the SSD is better. Thinking of upgrading my ps3 super slim with ssd but not sure if it can handle over 2 tb. The SSD upgrade is definitely very noticeable on loading times on all games.
@@ReturnToNothingness32147 Hello 👋 Thank you so much 😊 The safest max storage is 1TB. Some people squees 1,5TB in but database problems may occur if you go over 1TB. That’s why I left it at that size. The upgrade has been fun though and the gained speed makes it very much worth it 😊
I haven't done this particular upgrade myself just yet, so I don't know off the top of my head if this suggestion would work, but would another option to save a ton of time not be to hook up the HDD and SSD to a Linux PC via two USB-3 external enclosures and clone the HDD directly via GParted, then expand the cloned partition into the unused space following it on the new disk?
Hello VirtualAxiom 👋 Thank you for sharing another solution! I was aiming for a solution for people who don’t have several external cases and Linux knowledge. But having a more time saving solution is always welcome 😎
Thank for the video! The trivia fact that the PS3 only reads the first partition (which I think should be pronounced "partision", btw) is a very good one, one that could trip up many people trying to do this. I imagine that formatting directly with MBR scheme and FAT32 fs should skip the whole partitioning dance, right? The gains seem to be generally minor, I personally wouldn't go through the hassle unless I wanted to expand the storage anyway. Also, another side benefit: no mechanical seek noises from the HDD!
Hello David! Yes I was really thrown off at first by the whole EFI partition confusing the PS3. Many external drives even come with this pre-formatted so getting rid of it can only be done with the "clean" command to literally clean off all partitions and starts over. Doing the MBR afterwards leaves you with a clean single partition. The speed gains are depending on each game. Ive been playing a lot of GT5, GT6 and GTAIV and the more you load the more you appreciate the seconds you save. It does add up after a while. And yes no noises, which is great and also less heat and power consumption. It is all not a huge difference but a nice upgrade if you are up for it 🙂
@@LyuboA hello 👋 I haven’t had a single problem with digital downloads on my SSD and I’ve downloaded a lot of games 👍 Everything works more smoothly and I wouldn’t want to go back to a mechanical drive 😎
You may want to update this video as Microsoft recently announced that they’re removing the decades-old FAT32 limit and increasing compatibility to I believe beyond 1TB. Still 32-bit but now Windows 11 will be able to format drives like these to FAT32 with ease. By decades old, some of you weren’t even born to know how old. Like Windows 98 old.
@@ΚωνσταντίνοςΒαρδής Hello 👋 Yes its technically possible. You’ll have to install a custom firmware. For Fat/Slims its even a permanent firmware change which let’s you play backup ISOs.
Hello 👋 With the Fat and Slim model you have to have the firmware installer on a separate USB drive. The super slim though with internal memory didn’t need this procedure since it just uses the firmware from its internal memory when installing an SSD/HDD. So it depends what model of PS3 you have 😊
Hi MyNameIsBucket 👋The SATA interface is still SATA 1. The confusion came in when people found SATA 2 and 3 HDDs in their PS3s but the interface remained SATA 1. Still worth it since the seek/read/Write is always faster on SSD no matter the SATA standard 😎
Hey 👋 definitely try retro game stores. I found mine putting consoles up on eBay once in a while. Keep your eyes peeled, they do pop up here and there 👀

I have one question. Can you test the UI loading time and responsiveness while pressing the PS button from within a game? like a 30fps- game like assassin's creed 2 or similar? Mine is so slow to load, specially when going into the trophies section... it takes a lot of time to load. and also going to the last trophy all the way down then going back all the way to the first trophy, makes all the trophy thumbnails load all over again.
Hello Dane! That is unfortunately normal with specific games and the SSD won't help in this case either. Sony gave developers the option to use more RAM in games which was meant to be reserved for the UI. Now with less RAM the UI got sluggish and loads slow when switching.
Hey. So I did exactly what you did for the most part. HOWEVER, you didn't address this additional issue: "The file was created by another user and can not be loaded." Even after pulling my files and user accounts from my external hard drive, I always get this message. Note: I do not have online access! It was always offline! How were you able to access your saved files and actually use them without having any other issues? What else did you do? I did not back up my trophies before doing the backup, but I do have a PSN account. So maybe that is why. Still, an answer from you would help a lot. Thanks😊 Update: You have to ACTIVATE THE PS3 SYSTEM! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! WHATEVER I TYPED ABOVE, I SOLVED IT! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PSN ACCOUNT! IT'S FREE! MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO LOG INTO YOUR PSN ACCOUNT! THEN AFTERWARDS, YOU ACTIVATE YOUR SYSTEM AND SYNC YOUR TROPHIES! I did all that, and it fixed the issue!!!
Hello 👋 yes after the backup you’ll have to connect online like I’m showing at 11:50. That’s just how Sony‘s system works. I’m glad you got it working. Time to play some cool games 😎
hey😊 Will adding a new SSD to my jailbroken PS3 stop the console from randomly freezing? I have to format my ssd to fat32 with my computer? (my games sometimes freeze when I launch them) and do I have to format the ps3 first and delete the hen or is it not necessary?
@@Сократ-ф1ъ Hello 👋 I don‘t run HEN myself but if you don‘t want to keep your files you are able to just pop in a new SSD or HDD and format it with the Playstation 3 itself. A new drive might help with the freezing. Also I wouldn’t factory reset the PS3 either and try to keep HEN when switching drives. I would definitely give it a try. 👍

Since the console is ancient, can new games be installed on the new SSD? You know what I mean? From torrents etc.
@@ΚωνσταντίνοςΒαρδής Hello 👋 Yes its technically possible. You’ll have to install a custom firmware. For Fat/Slims its even a permanent firmware change which let’s you play backup ISOs.
Amazing, great video keep up the good work!
Thank you Sérgio! 🙂
So i can't just plug the SSD om the ps3 and install the firmware??
Hello 👋 With the Fat and Slim model you have to have the firmware installer on a separate USB drive. The super slim though with internal memory didn’t need this procedure since it just uses the firmware from its internal memory when installing an SSD/HDD. So it depends what model of PS3 you have 😊
Great video! Can you make another with the same SSD but in PS4? Thanks.
Hello Oscarloria! Thank you 🙂 That's not a bad idea, I'll think about it. I do own a regular PS4 and a PS4 Pro. Just need another SSD 😄
i'm seeing conflicting reports that the super slim actually has a SATA II interface. anybody know for sure?
Hi MyNameIsBucket 👋The SATA interface is still SATA 1. The confusion came in when people found SATA 2 and 3 HDDs in their PS3s but the interface remained SATA 1. Still worth it since the seek/read/Write is always faster on SSD no matter the SATA standard 😎
Hey man, where do you buy the factory refurbished ps3?
Hey 👋 definitely try retro game stores. I found mine putting consoles up on eBay once in a while. Keep your eyes peeled, they do pop up here and there 👀
Mercari and ebay and amazon should all have some.
How you get a new ps3 I want to buy one
Hello 👋 I’ve found mine on eBay. Some retro game store had some new ones in stock. Keep looking on places like that because they pop up once in a while 👍
I had the same question. You are so fortunate to find a band new one nowadays.
@@akgh2010I really was lucky that my Phat PS3 YLOD at a time where i could find a PS3 bundle like this. They do still come up once in a while though at retro game stores on eBay. I saw two regular slims the other day. Keep your eyes peeled 😊
@@SamDansCouch ok thanks.
Thanks😊
Update: You have to ACTIVATE THE PS3 SYSTEM!
Time to play some cool games 😎
hey😊
Will adding a new SSD to my jailbroken PS3 stop the console from randomly freezing?
I have to format my ssd to fat32 with my computer?
(my games sometimes freeze when I launch them)
and do I have to format the ps3 first and delete the hen or is it not necessary?
@@Сократ-ф1ъ Hello 👋 I don‘t run HEN myself but if you don‘t want to keep your files you are able to just pop in a new SSD or HDD and format it with the Playstation 3 itself. A new drive might help with the freezing. Also I wouldn’t factory reset the PS3 either and try to keep HEN when switching drives. I would definitely give it a try. 👍
@@SamDansCouch thanks :)
Will this EMU Samsung SSD also fit in the PS3 slim (I see you have the super slim)?
@@tacos4419 hello 👋 Yes it will fit into the slim and also the fat PS3 as well 👍
@@SamDansCouch Thanks! It worked perfectly for me.
@@tacos4419No problem, glad you got your PS3 upgraded too 😊
Schönes Modell in Rot 🥰
Danke 👍 Rot ist auch meine Lieblingsfarbe 🙂
Hey I got a question on 2:38 what hard drive is that for the backup
Hello 🙂 That is an older crucial 2,5" SSD that I had left over from a PC and I put into a see through USB case 😎
@@SamDansCouch ok cool I just want to follow the video correctly and not mess up my ps3 😅
@@lofilouie68 no worries, you will be fine ☺️ And if anything fails you can always get the official firmware from Sonys website and start over. Nothing will break 😊
@@SamDansCouch ok sorry one more thing is any portable ssd drive good for backup saves, etc when I do that step? And what type of flash drive I should use sorry I’m really super new to this 😅
@@lofilouie68 Hey, no worries 😊An SSD is lighter and is not as touchy as an HDD when you accidentally bump into it. So if you have a spare SSD for backups, you can use it on the PS3. If you only want to do backups of saved games you could also use a thumb drive / USB stick instead. Even smaller and easy to plug in and out without any wires 🙂
İs this work with cfw multiman broked ps3
This is very important to me pls answer realy quick plsss
@@tayfunprotos9193you can use an ssd with custom firmware too 👍
nice ps3
Thank you 😊 Red has always been my favorite color so getting this model worked out great for me. Looks even nicer in person.
Is the 1tb evo the max size?
Can i put something bigger?
Hello 👋 Yes 1TB is the max size. Anything higher you are going to run into problems of the PS3 not being able to rebuild its database and lose files. So 1TB is where everything still runs smoothly. Else I would have put in more as well. I’m a game hoarder 😄
@@SamDansCouch fosho, ill pick one up this week. Thanks for the help, dude.
@@unveiledwithouttears1370 No problem 👍 you will definitely enjoy spicing up myour PS3 😎👍 Have fun 😊
ps3 max is 1.5 tb , ( 1360 gb ) but ssd or hardivre 1.5 tb are hard to found , intel made 1.2 tb ssd long time ago , but 2 tb won't work exept if u cloning 1.5 tb drive into 2 tb drive ( but u won"t have more capacity and u will lose 500 gb ) put 2 tb empty directy into ps3 do'nt work

Another great video - thank you
Thank you so much for your support! I appreciate you watching all the videos I’m making 👍😎
@@SamDansCouchI have an old PS3 (not slim) and might consider a similar upgrade myself.
@@giacintorenta7579 I just rediscovered my PS3 library again after years of not looking at it which lead to my super slim and the ssd upgrade. It does have a lot of great games you can still enjoy nowadays. You should give it a go. Do you have any personal favorite games in the PS3 library? 😊

i added 1 tb ssd in my ps3 slim
@@andrewdupuis1151 hi 👋 that’s awesome. Breathes fresh life into our favorite console 😎
I installed an SSD on my PS3 and later found out that certain games were not running correctly. Games in that generation were not designed with an ssd in mind so you might run into issues. Ssd just isn't worth installing in a ps3. Newer Hdds these days are more than capable.
Hello lapapaya👋 thank you for your feedback! Do you remember which games gave you trouble? I’ve been playing many different games and only had positive experiences.
It was Armored Core 5. The audio in the game was not working. After doing some research I found that the Ssd could be the issue. I swapped it out with a wd hdd in the audio on the game worked fine.
But honestly it's the only game I can think of that had issues.
That’s really interesting. I don’t own this game unfortunately else I’d love to test this with my setup too. I’m still downloading games I got through PSN over the years and I will keep my eyes open if any games give me a problem. 👍
Sounds good. Great video 👍
Can i use 2TB internal ssd?
Hello 👋 Unfortunately 2TB won’t work. 1,5TB somewhat works until the database gets corrupted and screws things up. The safest capacity is 1TB that’s why I chose this specific size for my PS3 😎
@@SamDansCouch so this one what you install is the best size and speed for ps3
@@yournightmare9999 yes up to 1TB you won’t get any issues and top speeds. Also if you go with a name brand ssd like the one I used in my video, it’s also going to last you a very long time. I’m really enjoying the faster loading times. I’m re-playing GTAIV these days and it’s a joy 😎👋
@@SamDansCouch thanks 👊😎👌
Could a ssd help me with screen tearing and FPS issues?
@@hoopa7400 Hello👋 it won’t help fps stutters nor screen tearing. But it will help with loading times. Games like Killzone constantly load the level while playing. SSD will make these hick ups shorter and much easier on the eyes 😎
it's wll help popup texture in gta 5 when u drive to fast
I think for PS3, it is better to use SSHD
An SSD is faster than a SSHD
8:07
Makes little sense as they are hampered by slow sata interface of PS3 (sata 1)
No points in SSD since PS3 didn't support sata 3
Hello squallsamas! 👋No Sata 3 doesn't mean you don't get a nice speed advantage over a regular HDD as shown in my video. It is a fun upgrade that doesn't break the bank 😎
You don't need sata 3 to take avantage of faster random read/write performance
Super slim support sata 3
@@MA-jz4yc
That's true but i don't think it's worth the hassle
SSD ide existed guys !! in 2004
i can format FAT32 on 1 tb in windows 10
just use a program called '' fat32 format '' it's 100 kb zise lol
Look up the pros and cons to switching to SSD!! SSD has a short lifespan and can only take so much deleting and rewriting!! I was going to go with SSD, now I changed my mind. Anything newer is not built to last!! Do your research!!
Hello 👋Don't give fear reports about SSDs dying too much weight. You would need to spend thousands and thousands of hours playing, copying and deleting files on your PS3 until the SSD would slow down. I have not heard about a single person having achieved an SSD dying in their PS3. So no worries, SSDs are cheap and give you so many advantages. It is worth it in my opinion. And a mechanical discs is always at risk at dying at any point in time too. That's just physics. So no worries and enjoy gaming! 🙂
@SamDansCouch I don't think I gave fear reports when I say do your own research!! I tell people to look up the pros and cons!!
A recent update now gives Windows 11 the ability to format FAT32 on drives upto 2TB... Albeit using command line tools.
