      @@Anti-Yeet I agree there are more read/write limits on ssd. It’s why most security systems use mechanical drives.
      And ssd may run cooler but they get crippled in a hot environment over the mechanical variety.
      Ssd is far superior in terms of technical features of course. But people clearly turn blind eyes to the issues.
      Ssd really comes down to the bottle neck of the system itself.
      Iv got 3 original Xbox’s with the original 8gb drives in them they are doing just fine.

    SATA 1 won't matter that much because it only affects sequential speeds, while SSD's biggest advantage over HDD's are random speeds (measured in IOPS). In short, the time it takes to jump between each little file is instantaneous, while HDD's had to physically move their head (needle) across the disk. This is what greatly improves overall speed in many tasks, regardless of the maximum sequential speed, or whether you are using NVME or SATA.

    • @stephenxs8354
      @stephenxs8354 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I am sure ps3 games are optimized for streaming rather than access time.

    • @MrDarkSephirot
      @MrDarkSephirot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@stephenxs8354 PS3 is "agnostic" to its storage to a certain degree, but I'm happy to learn more if you ellaborate.
      Its CPU asks for a certain asset (like a small texture, that is loaded into the RAM and later managed by the GPU). And it's the storage (HDD/SSD) that looks for that particular file before loading it. SSD does this almost instantaneously. I have seen this with my eyes in the original RAGE game for example. So I don't deny that PS3 has other bottlenecks where SSD's can't totally help, but I'm very sure of this behaviour in PS3, PC's and other consoles as well.

      Does it decrease heat? That makes it worth it to me lol

    • @MrDarkSephirot
      @MrDarkSephirot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@jesuschavez9110 Sí, un SSD SATA se calienta menos y consume menos que un disco duro. Aunque el cambio en el calor total del sistema es insignificante. También es mucho más silencioso y resistente al movimiento. Pero la mayor ventaja es que acelera el tiempo de arranque de la PS3 y la carga de los juegos instalados en el almacenamiento (un 30% más rápidos de media, a veces hasta el 50%). En algunos juegos el cambio es muy grande (GTA 5, Gran Turismo, Skyrim o RAGE).

      All of that is true except for the part about having higher frame-rates. An SSD has nothing to do with the frame-rate and is strictly tied to the CPU/GPU of the console. But yes, an SSD in a PS3 is well worth it considering how cheap they are now. Most games are run off the disc anyway so an SSD is excellent to speed up the XMB, reduce texture pop-in and generally reduce power and heat consumption.

    I personally did a 1TB Samsung SSD today for some downloaded games from the PlayStation network. Mortal Kombat 2 plays great! the PS1 games load pretty much as normal. Games like Silent Hill, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and Dino Crisis having different resolutions in menus, load, and play as normal. If you have the discs it'll play as emulation.
    the store loads fast which was a surprise. It's also quieter I'm guessing due to the HDD being one of the culprits.
    If you have a spare drive go for it. 500GB is plenty for games if you want a fresh drive.

    Literally zero mention of drive health and longevity issues that an SSD faces on PS3, a system that does not even know what an SSD is. Disc based games in particular (unless it's COD, which breaks BR lasers instead) are constantly caching data on the drive instead of streaming directly from the disc. That means the SSD is constantly writing and erasing data as you are playing, the one thing that erodes SSDs and the PS3 does not even support TRIM.
    There is virtually no information out there on how PS3 handles SSDs in the long run. People in the PS3 dev community saying don't use them, Rebbitors saying they are the greatest thing ever with no downsides, people here blindly quoting said Rebbitors and then these videos with unironic Amazon links to go buy the things and no mention of their one major drawback.

    game with 1 big file will not benefit of latency of ssd , but game with a hundred of small file will benefit of low latency acces from ssd , it's depend of game programming, some game have also execution locked from cpu or speed locked for the spec of bluray in their coding , that why some game don"t benefit of ssd and game from era bluray ( without inslall pre 2011 ) are also programmed for the speed of bluray , when the last game ( era 2012 2017 ) have semi install for benefit of hard drive speed , and their loading speed can be reduce more with ssd ( ex : dead or alive 5 in ssd have almost no laoding time

    In short; Large games (20-30GB+) running on internal storage should see a nice benefit in load times. Probably 22-50% depending on the game.

    An unorthadox idea but one to consider.
    When dumping PS2 and PS3 and if you dont have a Blu-Ray drive lying around, you can dump to a SSD while you do all that, then pull it out to back it up to the PC with the SATA 3 speeds, rather than the SATA 1 speeds of the HDD, even through FTP.

    How much more snappy is the OS experience though? That’s what I’d like to see, the PS3 struggles sometimes because the OS got more bloated over the last 10 years than what the PS3 was perhaps intended to handle.

      It will be faster, I dont knw why these tests gloss over boot up times or switching from game to game. They never show how slow the ps3 is when booting up. The OS is on the drive, so when its on an SSD it does everything faster. Even if people say theres minimal difference, when in reality it depends on what their doing. I like how the tests in this video didn't include a large game like GT5 or GT6. Those games the SSD benefits from as well.

    with the looming shutdown of the PS3 playstation store, I am scouring the net for information on how to upgrade my ps3 hard drive.
    what I want to know is will the SSD upgrade work with a PS3 that is not modded. I read somewhere that that PS3 (with official firmware) can only read a max of 1TB hard drive and does not recognize USB 3.0 connection, but most of these articles or information I read are over 8 years old. there has been no update recent test with regards to the most recent firmware update from Sony.
    maybe you can enlighten me on this subject before I start buying HDD or SSD that i might potentially regret LOL i'm not really interested in modding my ps3 slim anytime soon, I just want to back up all the games I bought on PS3 Playstation Store as well the as the numerous updates to all the PS3 Games in my collection.

    The biggest difference in load times will come from open world games and most games that came out late in the consoles lifecycle that have data installed on the drive prior to being playable. The differences will be even greater if your games are being ran 100% from the SSD/HDD rather you copy your disc via Multiman or buy off PSN.
    Ex: Launching GTA 5 from disc and my loaded 120GB stock HDD was taking 3 minutes to load into Franklin's house. With an SSD, it was ~2 minutes if I recall correctly. When I copied the game completely to the SSD, it took 55 seconds, which is roughly what it takes to load the PS4 version on the PS5's internal drive. A monumental difference.
    The differences will be marginal in most other cases it's true, but in this day and age you can a 1TB SSD for ~$60USD which is a steal compared to what I paid this time 2 years ago at $86. Almost no point in NOT getting one today

    Just for the sake of posterity- I only just finally caved & put a new hard drive in my PS3 (not SSD, though). It's the third PS3 I ever owned, a slim model, &, for whatever reason, I always had trouble with it deciding to acknowledge the existence of Bluray disks & sometimes it had trouble even pulling a disc inside the tray. I thought I was going to have to install a new bluray drive, too, but, for whatever reason, simply replacing the hard drive completely fixed the other issue, as well. Not 100% sure what was wrong before, but I guess the original hard drive was only barely compatible with the PS3 & sapped energy from other components of the playstation, so parts like the disc tray were barely functioning? I dunno, but it fixed it, so I am happy I don't have to shell out another $50-60 for that.

    Ftp should be a lot faster when transferring games instead of the bd drive or especially usb, ethernet is very much recommended either PC and ps3 connected both to the same router via eth, or directly connected (pc>ps3) which requires more setup.
    With a dying 7200 rpm sata 2 HDD i got 27MB/s writes max when transferring but it just didn't want to work anymore and wasn't able to handle gt6 so a 5400 rpm HDD it was and it was surprisingly slower I cant remember how much though. I have no available extra SSDs for my ps3 to test unfortunately.

      While this is very true and ive used this in the past its not for people who want to ISO their personal discs and use them that way. Also youre right about ethernet. I used wifi for ftp first on the ps3 and barely got 1mbps. Took a whole night to transfer 1 game. Then connected ethernet and got 20 a 25 mbps which reduced time to couple of minutes to max about an hour for larger games. Now i use ps3netsrv and play my games off of a network drive (nas)

    its a pointless debate at this point. ssd is faster and barely any more expensive than hdd. so i would say always go with ssd if you need a new ps3 hard drive. another point to consider is the spindown time of random aftermarket HDDs - i got burned by that once. every few minutes or so the hdd stopped spinning in games which caused 2 second freezes and backround music stopping etc.
