Been using 3 x 1.25T HDD in my ps3s for the past 7 years. Only had to do a reinstallation once during that time.
PS3s are BOSS.

I just got PS3 Slim yesterday from my friend free as he didn't have any use of it. This will be excellent guide if I ever had to replace it's hard drive. Idk why but when I saw the warning "Do not cover breather hole" in 2:27, my brain misread it as "Do not breathe in cover hole" first. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

For any of you having trouble when you put your ssd in and it doesnt work. I actually put the firmware 4.90 onto my usb backup. Of course you have to put it in your computer. Click on the usb drive. Click PS3 then you should see a folder title EXPORT that has all your backed up games, etc. next to that folder create a new folder titled UPDATE. Then place the 4.90 firmware into that folder and then you should be good to go. I did this like 20 times before trying that so I hope this saves someone some time.
Captain here Only HDDs being used externally (via USB) need to be formatted in FAT32. You do not need to pre-format a HDD you plan to install internally to the PS3. The console will format it during the installation.

Never really changed my hdd because I always bought discs however it does seem like a good idea especially if you want to use PKGi 👍
And jailbreaking is great option you can fit more games i am currently using 1tb hdd

I am using 160HDD about to upgrade to a Kingston 480GB SSD
Discs install data on the hard drive too, some more than others, but they do. Some install around 12 GB of data in the hdd.

So did you backup onto the new hdd from usb stick? I’m trying to understand nobody’s video shows the full process you went from ofw to cfw in two separate frames and didn’t explain what you’d done
I use to do this with a 1TB Solid State Drive not only on my PS3, but also my PS4. Who knows when a 2TB SSD might come in handy for a PS4?

I don't get it, is the FAT32 formatting mandatory? I've watched/read a lot of other tutorials, they just swap the old HDD with the new HDD and it works
I don't know if it's this ps3 slim I have if it's the GPU, but I first had a 1tb Western digital blue SSD in it, now a 500gb Samsung Evo SSD and it slows down horribly, a technician I talked to said it could be the GPU or CPU going bad but I'm wondering if it's because it's not formatted, I just downloaded the 4.90 firmware on a USB drive and installed it that way, the ps3 says it's formatting the hard drive to operate with the system itself
The ps3 formats to fat32 itself when you add a new drive ssd or hdd. The only reason youd need a pc is to install the system firmware to a thumbdrive to add to the drive after its formatted otherwise you got a paperweight cause the ps3 doesnt have its operating system anymore
Also people saying ps3 ssd go bad quick is no longer true atleast for modern drives. When the ps3 came out ssds were expensive and not worth it for a console but now a 1tb can be like 50 bucks and most ssds have garbage collection now which keeps an ssd healthy when it doesnt have trim running which the ps3 cant use.
@@DJGamingBonanza I've installed an SSD and it works fine. Install times are a bit quicker now.
There is one thing, I've heard SSDs lose speed after 70% capacity, is that true?
@@SyamDaRos-EndoManno from what I've read ssds that dont have garbage collection drastically lose speed after some months but most ssds now do. When ps3 came out ssds were expensive. So cheap ones didn't have garbage collection. But even expensive ones from ps3 time are like 50 bucks now

i followed your video step by step. i uploaded fat32 and the newest ps3 firmware to my usb thumb drive and then i used the same usb stick to back up my entire ps3. now when after i correctly installed my new hard drive and insert my thimb drive its saying thr proper firm isnt found. what did i do wrong?

After formatting the HDD 1tb do you have to install the update on your PS3 if you're already if u already have evilnat 4.89 or can I just put in the newly formatted HDD into the PS3 and everything runs

Juste want to upgrade my ps3 HDD. i'm actually on cfw rogero 4.40 and want to use 4.90 cfw After this upgrade. Can i just install my New cfw when i reinstall my firmware or may i only use ofw to do so??
Doesn't the PS3 format it to FAT32 for you? How come you pre-formatted the drive and reinstalled OFW? I heard it was possible to do this with your CFW on the USB.
Is it better to go back to OFW first?
I think rebug has a debug hard drive transfer utility. All you need is to connect the new drive via usb

I need to know this too because I used a 1tb WD SSD first, and now a 500gb Samsung Evo SSD, installed the latest update 4.90 from a USB stick I downloaded right from Sony, but with both SSD's the system starts running horribly slow after about 40 minutes, it says formatting storage device when you start so I don't know if it's something I did or didn't do or something in the system itself going bad but it doesn't even get hot

Any tips on what to do if the Backup didn't work? It says it can't be found on the usb drive. would be nice not having to install everything all over, don't even have the Package manager now :/ E: tried putting back the old hdd to backup again but the box dont show anything on screen after powering on with old hdd inside.
Kinda sucks that it's only limited to 1TB while you can use up to 2TBs externally. I got a Samsung 870 EVO SSD for my slim model PS3 which I jailbroke and I'm almost out of space and I have a lot of PS3 games that I backed up and I still have more to back up. Guess I'll have to get an external drive.
Isn't it because of the thickness of the drive? I just tried installing a 1.5tb drive but it won't fit in the bay.

Done all steps put the hdd in and it seems like when i turn on the ps it just starts up as normal and when i check what storage its using it using the flash memory that’s come with it (12 gb nand) don’t know what I’ve done wrong?

Is the whole formatting to fat32 thing a useless exercise on the disk? The PS3 initializes it to its own wacky filesystem, which is probably Linux of some sort, and definitely not FAT32 due to the 4gb limitation it imposes on files.
The process is used just to clear your HDD, I found some of these new and especially refurbished HDD, they are not formatted correctly or have some weird files due to a program they may have used to essentially clean the disk. I typically add this step in all my upgrades just in case. Not too long ago I received a 4TB HDD Refurb from eBay, trying to upgrade my bosses PC and it had all this crap on it. Not sure why these resellers allow this to happen

ps3s store 8% of storage as reserve but its not neccessary. you can get the 8% back with homebrew
Does anyone know why when I download the file update. It opens via google chrome? Will that affect the ps3 if the file is theoretically getting opened with chrome.

Could you not just clone the old disk to the new disk and then extend the partition? That way you don't have to backup, load the firmware again and then still restore
I have same doubt, how to extend the partition space after?

I tried this, cloned my 500gb HDD to a 1TB SSD, it turned my 1TB into a 500GB SSD...kinda disappointing now I just formatted it to start over and whenever I turn the ps3 on it turns automatically off...what do?
@@aroh Pretty sure you need add the OS for anything to happen, Sony provides downloads for the latest version

You need a 2.5 inch drive, preferably an SSD. 1Terabyte. SATA. They are fairly standard.
Connecting the new hard drive to PC and formatting is unneeded extra work and can skip that process all together.. install the new hard drive in ur PS3 with a USB device plugged in with correct firmware and the firmware does all the work for u. .both formatting and installing
That's what I did with 2 SSD's now, the Samsung Evo SSD I just bought yesterday and did this, but it's slowing down terribly after about 35-40 minutes of use, is that from not formatting or something with the system possibly? Because the ps3 formats the storage device on it's own
@@josephhall7317it sounds more like a temperature issue. Formatting your drive in pc or ps3 will have the same effect

Currently like 1.5 TB but there is a way to pass that. It has to do with partitioning the drive a certain way to by pass it on the pS3

Yes in theory it should work. You can plug it into your ps3 as an external device and make the transfer that way!

as long as the specs line up with the ps3 hdd, yes. they have to have the same rpm and be the same size, but If they are you can.

you can free up 8% of hdd space with either a special app you can download for the ps3 or if you are using the newest evilnat there is already an option integrated in the special options.

Yo all of you guys make this way to harder then it needs to be. You could really just right click your drive in windows quick format it to fat32. You don't need an hdd program unless your doing something special.
No you cannot. Windows does not offer FAT32 format to drives over 32GB in size.

@Mitchellc0123 You can do so, but not through Windows. You have to use other software like GUIFormat in order to do that and make it a Large FAT32 Drive. Not saying it isn't possible, just not possible through Windows

It would have been much quicker and easier to buy a cheap SSD, take out the old HDD and clone to SSD direct.much quicker.
Update. I've tried that and you can not clone the HDD with PS3 content.or at least I have not found a way.
