  • Bit of a different one this time! As forums are dead these days, and as everyone still constantly asks me about my RB20 R32 I built in 2012, I've done a pretty in-depth TH-cam based build thread on it for you...

      SunPacBrolyGo KuZu thank you! I almost didn’t make this video as when I started it didn’t seem that interesting, but I was wrong as everyone’s loving it

      Yeah bro you're really good at it. This video was informative without being boring as most videos on cars are. Never stop making videos bro, i look forward to more.

      Agreed! I won't even bother with forged rods after seeing this. The pistons however look like a good investment if you have the money. But the rb20 is built to take the power. Had he not overboosted I bet he could have run stock internals for quite a while

      Kewin D on that Monky London vid the car was crap and slow, hated it. Was running low boost and god knows what else wrong thanks to owners after me messing with it and making a mess of it.
      Was gutted when I saw that video as looked slow as hell to me.
      Doubt it was even 400bhp in that vid.
      At least I’ve got vids from when I owned it and was actually fast.

    Liked and subbed ! great build, Im running an F-con on my 1jz.. I get it tuned at Torque developments international. one of the few places that can map them. my favorite bit was your inlet manifold. Ive always had a soft spot for an rb20det. let me know if you ever need a cost price import. I have a decent supplier in Japan I can get anything.

    Always read alot of your posts, loved the stance you took on building a weapon 20det which seems to be the forgotten RB( everyone wanks on about the 26) Glad you made this video as it disproves alot of haters and the 20dets potential needs to be more well known! A quick question, what was the full trim of the turbo you had?

    Great video Stav! Ive got a r32 gtst with an rb20 myself. Im running a HKS GT2530 turbo, 480cc injectors, z32 maf and a walbro 255 fuel pump. All this i ran by a apexi power fc ecu mapped on a dyno with this setup on shell v-power fuel. However im running into detonation issues. Im curretly making 278whp on 0,9-1bar of boost and the knock value on the power fc is super high (confirmed by the tuner using headphones to listen for det.) Now when im driving on high load on high rpm the power fc is still flashing the cat light in the dash indicating that it's picking up knocking. Since you seem to know rb20s very well do you have any idea of a solution to this problem? The tuner is suggesting that i go e85 to solve the problem but i dont want to since we dont have e85 in the pumps around where i live. How did you manage to run 1,5 bar of boost and get 470hp with 0 knock, please teach me your ways! :p

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Salazar Zain what AFRs are you running? Set issues at such low boost is odd regardless of setup, what mapper?
      But on a pretty small turbo like you’re running it’s gonna have more set issues than something with decent turbine flow- that is part of it.
      The equal flow inlet plenum deffo helped, though they managed 1.5bar on stock plenum too.

    • @ItalianStallionLouie
      @ItalianStallionLouie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Switch to BP98 and upgrade coils/plugs (correct gap .8 or something). Fuel and spark I've seen is main issue to knock. A lot of people have pushed 300-340rwhp with a 2530.
      May even be worth putting in a fuel reg.
      Also - have noticed you're not the first one to complain of knock using a pfc, its like after a certain amount of air they can't read properly anymore. But usually at much higher boost into the mid 20s

    The best part about this build was all the people on driftworks forums saying that Stav is wrong and that this setup will not perform good. Good times seeing their BS dismissed.
    When you said that you made the piston ring gap the largest, where did the number come from? Is it just general knowledge or does this information come from piston manufacturer/service manual?

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arminas Ilginis yeah that was pretty funny, loads of people with no clue thinking they knew what they were talking about.
      They were, as we knew all along, massively wrong, as I proved.
      Regarding the ring gap, most manufacturers have their own recommended settings, but people do have their own general opinions too.

    • @R6_Leo

      @@StavTech that’s sick, pretty creative, would try the same but I cut my front bar too much to get as much air into the intercooler so this wouldn’t work

  • @butters_
    @butters_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good build always liked it. But I’m not sure what you mean by the NIStune holding back? NIStune has good rep. Look at AUS and NZ, 80-90% of tuned RBs are on NIStune easily making 500+ wheel ?

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrKp0w holding it back exactly what I said it was, zero to do with power. It struggled to cope with adjusting the fuelling fast enough for what the turbo was allowing happen on and off
      and part throttle. Was no doubt some of the issue the first mapper had too.
      Not sure about most the NZ/Oz cars running it though? Almost everything decent is running mafless on Link and Haltech.

    • @thespartenkid
      @thespartenkid 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah nah, nistune is no good past the 5-600hp mark to be honest, you always see people run Link G4's, Haltech and Wolf at around and well above these power levels.
      My preference is Link G4 as their quality and programming is unmatched.

  • @Codescardbarn

  • @kotletmaker328
    @kotletmaker328 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you reckon I should copy your exact setup, or should I change it up a little and make my own?
    Kinda feels bad copying people...

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If i was to do it again, I’d run the same setup, but add some mild cams and decent coilpacks.
      As it worked fantastic, but the tuner said there was at least another 50bhp in it with more boost and/or some cams.

  • @carbonfiber492
    @carbonfiber492 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Link ems and ls coils would have helped with boosting issues
    Or just go a 25/30 and gain around 100nm+ everywhere
    As good as rb’s sound on limiter revs and oil temp seem to be what kills them
    On a side note was that inlet that good remember the Gibson Motorsport hr31 used a standard inlet manifold on the red top 20det mind you that car was insane with its single tube exhaust manifold and sounded mental

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      decent coils would’ve solved it, link wouldn’t have changed anything though.
      A 2530 would’ve totally killed power. That’s basically what a 2871 is that was on it before.

    • @carbonfiber492
      @carbonfiber492 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stav-Tech link would have ment a plug in ecu with map sensor sorry ment a rb30 with a 25det head not a different turbo

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      carbonfiber492 ah sorry yes! I’d just woke up and not thinking lol.
      Yeah I had a RB30 for my old R32 GTR, and having link on one of my new cars, but this was a budget build as much as I could, just to prove you can get mega performance from the little 20

    • @carbonfiber492
      @carbonfiber492 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stav-Tech I just remember when I built my last skyline it working out cheaper to go a link plug in (from memory adaptronic was cheaper again) than a nistune was to get working properly but I was also working with a neo head and wanted to keep the vtc
      Rb20’s are a great little motor but the cost at least here in Australia makes them not worth it when a 25 is about the same price and a 30 short block can range anywhere from $50 up unless it’s running no one bothers with them still made 240kw on a China turbo before it lifted the head and through a welsh plug into the timing belt on my old 32 before it got a rb25 transplant

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah prices here are different, Nistune is less than half the cost of going Link, but if I'd have known it wasn't going to cope with the new setup I'd have went straight to a decent MAP management, as going Nistune then HKS cost me nearly what Link would here.
      30 blocks cost a bomb here, as they only cams in a few old Patrols, most of which are long since scrapped!

  • @Condrayack

    I just imported a 92 gtst type m and have been trying to narrow down the most essential mods to get as close to 400 hp as I can get. What would you recommend to get as close as I can without breaking the bank and changing everything? If you have some time and see this comment. Please pm me or reply, I would actually greatly appreciate it. Cheers from the US.

    • @StavTech
      @StavTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cooper 400 is possible on a heathy engine and standard internals for sure. Good size turbo on a tubular manifold, something rated to at least 500bhp, maybe 600, similar size to what I ran, then can just run a bit less boost for less stress. If you have E85 in your area your life will be a lot easier too.
      Decent front mount, 3in+ exhaust, 550cc or bigger injectors, decent ECU, decent fuel pump, and a good mapper to set the car up properly and safely.
      I ran about 450 on stock internals originally.

    • @Condrayack

      Awesome project. Appreciate the detailed break down. Gives me confidence in a Rb24 hybrid I plan to build using a rb25neo block/pistons with the lighter and shorter stroke rb20 crank and rods. You just saved me $1000 on needlessly buying forged pistons, when the 20's will clearly withstand 500hp.

      Lol. Just because you can’t don’t make it not possible. 220kw is 295bhp, even the mildest cams on the planet when you got 24 valves and a lot of boost could make that.
      Not sure why air flow meter is mentioned when it’s not even running one either?

      gabpis “I’ve not managed it so it’s impossible” is basically what you’re saying.
      Ps-
      Stock 20DET cam specs are 240duration, 7.8 lift, same as 25DET cams, and longer duration but a little less lift than NEO ones.
      And while the ports are slightly smaller, they sure ain’t small enough to limit power at the levels you’re on about.
      Almost no factory 16v heads would be limited at that level, never mind a 24v one.
