This is the stuff I love learning about. Wish more people would do videos about this stuff, especially since the skylines aren’t that popular here in the states
Now I’m trying to get a better hold on Jdm cars and seeing that Supras keep on rising in price and the skylines are at a reasonable price I would like to know more on the rb26DETT engine maybe a full engine tear down in the future would be nice. Even though it doesn’t need it I do find a detailed video on how to properly take the engine apart and back together again satisfying and informative.
So stoked that you are doing this! I've always wanted someone who knows what they are doing to cover all the common cars with a common sense guide from stock to great performance on an unopened motor! Will you be doing an sr20det?
Yes of course. Whats next? Don’t leave us hanging. I’m currently rebuilding a rb26 right now. Would like to know what is essential or should be done to maintain a rb26 for a long time.
RB are a really quirky engines, with ITB and twin turbos with ceramic impellers it’s clear that it was made for motorsport, but why then is the oiling system so bad in these engines. Can you elaborate? I’ve learned a ton from you guys already🖖
The ceramic turbine wheels are actually terrible for motorsport use, and are known to fail above about 15 psi (the turbos on this car have already been swapped out for steel wheel variants). The oiling system in the Rb26 is known to be problematic, however in any serious competition car the oiling system will inevitably be swapped out for a dry sump anyway.
I've heard through the grapevine that the reason the engineers thought moving a large volume of oil through the head was regarding the solid-lifter design. They were thinking with the engine capable of such high operating RPM and solid lifters it would require more oil for lubrication and heat management. Of course, time told us that with the lackluster TLC a majority of these older R32 GTR's got, a majority of RB26's succumbed to oil sludge and pooling of oil in the head, spinning bottom end bearings and scarring camshaft journals. Of course, its common knowledge now to add a small oil return line from the head to the block near the firewall to minimize the pooling of oil in the head and maximize the availble oil in the sump for the bottom end. Anyone correct me if I am wrong, this is just items i've heard through the grapevine....
Christoffer Sinding they weren't made for high boost from the factory, that's about it mate. The more boost you put in the oil is going to get forced to go somewhere, hence the need for a catch can and updated oil system
Could you find out how aggressive you can be with bringing on power and maybe shed some light on the RB26's limitations around torque inertia at low rpm?
The stock twin turbos (or for that matter any upgraded twin turbo kits) are really the limiting factor on how aggressively the power can be brought on. The RB26 is not known for its low rpm torque, however the turbo upgrade we have planned should offer huge improvements in both power and boost response - Who says you can't have your cake and eat it :)
Interesting video Andre looking forward to seeing the Tuning session and I hope we will see more videos like this on TECH TALK. The RB series engines are my all time favorite but I haven't had much success with them 😕.
Hi Taz, well my RB25DET threw a conrod straight through the block 3 weeks ago under normal driving conditions and no mods to the engine. After it happened I was telling my mechanic about it and he said this was the 4th RB he knew that threw a rod under relatively light load. My #4 conrod was broken. Piston still moves freely with no damage to liner or piston rings.
probably had the shit beaten out of it before you owned it and has picked up a rod bearing, spun and punched it out of the block. No one really bothered to check the bearings in these motors at this age which is pretty surprising.
Same here! They were never 'cheap cars' but still within reach for the average Joe, that however is changing. It happens with cars though so not surprising, just really some of the first Japanese cars that were mainstream to do so I guess - Taz.
@@hpa101 Hi 👍 . I think the big problem is various countries had 20 /25 (?) year old import rule so it's opened up a far bigger demand for them because of the age they are now . which is unfortunate for the likes of me because the price went up 😭 . I put a deposit on a R33 GTR Lèmans in around 2007 , it was only £11500 but the garage was a real waste of time and I pulled out , I will never ever get that chance again, I later found out Lads had tried to buy R34 Nür spec's off same garage for £45000 and been messed around. @@hpa101 it guts me that they are out my range at moment BUT I also am glad the price has went up because I want them to be looked after and be around for years to come . In UK the Cosworths have went absolutely ridiculous, the 3 door like you will remember from being beaten by the R32 back in the day were being sold for £6000 back in around 2002 and the Sapphire Cosworth were going for as little as £1500 same sort of time , now the prices are border line illegal 😂 . It def interesting to see some tuning tips on the RB26. If those are the factory painted valve covers. Then the RB26 unit here should be the later GTR R34 RB26DETT. The original RB26 in the R32 and R33 are black. There are slight differences from the different gen of RB26s from the R32 to the R34. And the N1 and RRR blocks are the most sought after for high powered applications. Interesting the owner stick to the twin turbo setup. Many would have ditch the 90s era turbo units for the single turbo setup. Did the owner upgraded the water and oil pump? Because the stock units from the factory with high temps and boost are a bad mix. Most will upgrade those first before doing any major mods. While ITBs are great for most engines. Most would opt for a single big throttle body for simplicity. Speaking of which Mighty Car Mods is building a 240Z with the RB26 from a R33 and GTT R34 5 speed RWD only gearbox. Cant wait for the final product.
Don't worry, the twin turbo setup is not going to be sticking around long. They're only there because that is how the car was purchased. We will be moving to an EFR 8374 single turbo. It will also be getting a built motor, potentially with a 2.8 stroker kit. For the moment the stock oil pump remains however we've only found them to be problematic if you try spinning the engine past 8000 rpm. Of course the narrow drive face of the early RB26 crank isn't ideal and again will be addressed in the not too distant future.
The colour of the valve cover is off, so it`s probably the R32 oem with a new paint job and the R34 RB26 center badge. The CAS sensor should have been changed to the newer R34 version, if this was indeed a R34 engine. (R34 has plastic cover CAS with a different wiring pinout compared to R32/R33
The one question I have is on the charging/alternator system -- do you find the stock alternator output to present any voltage issues when running a modern ECU, larger fuel system and more powerful spark setup (and commonly an HID kit for the awful stock lights)? There are high output kits available and kits to swap to something like an LS1's alternator which stock has more amps (I think 125 vs 70, as an example). Love this new video series - this is the basic mod path I am planning for on the engine side. I have a BNR32 with mods from Japan that are very similar to how this car started and just looking to tidy and modernize the engine for safety and a small bump in performance.
Can you please show actual results of old injectors com paired to new injector. Can you show realtime results and maybe fuel tables and all the things that make running newer and larger flowing injectors. I'm interested to see if it's possible to run larger injectors to pass emission testing . Love the show with awesome content 👍
Super informative video HPA, great stuff. I agree with @Dangermouse, the R32 GTR is just plain badass. I'd have one over virtually any other car I think, always loved them, always will.
Hi Guys! When you fitted the Walbro 255 fuel pump, did you re-wire to bypass the Fuel Pump Control Module? Or, as I want to do, continue to the factory wiring and FPCM... Will the factory set up provide suitable voltage and current to run the 255 properly? Thank guys!
Hey guys great stuff! I love series you guys put out most of all so i can't wait to see more of this car! Taz does this mean there might be a chance we will be seeing it in a webinar or on the HP website for a future lesson? (:

keep up the great videos HPA. how do you find the hks f con v pro for tuning, are they still acceptable for a gtr with ITBs and garrett 2860-5 turbos? I will be taking mine for a retune soon and it also runs quite rich under partial throttle...10:1 ratio.
Thanks for the video! What are your thoughts on replacing the CAS unit with a trigger kit ? are there any additional benefits to having a crank trigger as well ?
G'day Jedy and David. Keep an eye out for Episode 2, the Nissan triggering system plays a starring role! Spoiler alert - Yes, we change it out for a replacement unit that fits in the stock location, but uses a VR sensor with fewer teeth :-) - Zac.
Hey! Great video! Pulling the fuse to make it RWD is of course going to send all the power to the rear wheels. Is the drivetrain from the c/dif backwards able to withstand, say, 1000 hp? Where's the limit, do you know?
High Performance Academy Hi just made 554kw@ the wheels on jem dyno very happy with the tune im running a 6466.gen2 was in formed turbo is running out of puff on that rear housing .84 car its still a standard bottem end at the moment just seeing if adding timing on a built engine will make more power at the same boost 32 /33psi .
Shadowmiester1 The R32 GT-R is 4wd but simply by pulling a fuse you can run them as 2wd as they would have done in the video. The R33 and R34 GT-Rs cannot do this however as the centre diff/clutch pack is always preloaded with a little front drive.
I'm sorry, you asked how they bypassed it properly which is what I replied with as that is what they used. If you wanted to do it cheaply you can just hack off the plug and join all the wires together.
It's coming, we just need a few more hours in a day :( Note the owner has a bunch of new parts, so it's just a matter of getting them on and getting it tuned ;) - Taz.
Very interesting, but not enough details. Which ecu you decided to use? What are the name of resistor are you going to install? I would also be interested to see how is possible to modify rb25det s2, with a/t. I have stock nissan stagea 34, Series 1, rb25det+a/t . If I will decide to make some boostup. What boost is tha highest for stock maf and ecu. I am also installed audi coils, walbro pump. And also it is interesting which spark types use (5,6,7)? Thanks in advance for your reply.
@Insane The ECU is mentioned specifically in the video ;) We just bypassed the resistors using a kit from NZ EFI, 15 PSI is as high as you want to go with a stock ceramic wheel. Hope that helps! For spark plugs and fuel system requirements, these are topics that we cover in our members-only webinars and not something we can do justice to in just a few minutes in a video like this - www.hpacademy.com/webinars/ - Taz.
tuurbow it's actually not bad for standard operation.if you start making more power your obviously going to have to update oil/cooling systems, look at the standard intercoolers, there tiny and good for fuck all.your talking about a 30 year old car remember, they might be new if your American, but they ain't new mate

She's still a work in progress and we'll have an update later in the year. We were too excited to sit on the video until we had the series completed haha - Taz.
I would like to see an episode down the road on head work, I.E port polish gain, then add cams and dyno and then add valve springs and dyno. Hopefully this is done on a larger turbo setup.
Not sure how far we'll go with this car as it depends on what the owner wants to do. A single turbo conversion is in the pipeline, but it is a streetcar and always will be so there is a limit to how far you can go before it ruins that aspect - Taz.
i dont get it why anybody would have airfilter exposed to the hot hair in engine bay. its 30min job to build box for the filter and route some cold air pipes to it
I'm not sure why you're keeping hot hair in your engine bay either to be completely honest, but I won't judge you 😎 Seriously though, a cold air intake is on the list for the next round of upgrades. Keep an eye out for that video in a few weeks if you enjoyed this one 🤓- Taz.
Seriously? Cold air intake isn't that important with a turbo car, since it's mostly your intercooler that's going to be doing the work. Once the air is being compressed by the turbo, it's going to heat up to WAY hotter than what's in the engine bay. Don't waste your time with anything meant to be "cold" intake because it's pointless. Dyno numbers prove cold air intakes on NA cars don't actually help either. Your main priority needs to be flow.
We're still working on part two at the moment. Will have been to Pikes Peak and released 2 new courses plus some other material before we get to it but it is coming =) - Taz.
But considering the r32 is an earlier generation it is absolutely incredible, really every generation was a major upgrade. R33 knocked 20seconds of the nur and well yeh the r34 really needs no further explanation. The r35 will be considered part of the family eventually, it has phenomonal performance.
Just the video I've been hoping for. Great job. My question is, Is the owner considering an electronically controlled fan instead of the standard setup? I'd be interested to know the parasitic loss of the standard system especially at high RPMS and would also like to know if the standalone Link ECU you've chosen could control such operation?
We will be switching to a different radiator with an electric fan, however in our own experience you're unlikely to see a worthwhile power gain from losing the viscous fan.
We don't do customer tunes so I couldn't tell you sorry! We can teach you how to tune yourself which you can email me about if you're interested, otherwise, if you're looking to have someone do it for you then you need to ring around your local tuners :) - Taz. support@hpacademy.com
The customer got excited and bought a lot of parts before talking to us, otherwise, we probably would have used ID1000s. To be honest, though, these do a good job and the company that provided them is reputable and tested then provided the required injector data themselves which is a handy touch =) - Taz.
It's still a wee while away yet, but worth the wait ;) Have a crack at some free lessons in the meantime - www.hpacademy.com/free-tuning-lessons - Taz.
It's still ongoing. The owner has put on a ton of upgrades from Hypertune but still awaiting a retune at this stage after also getting a custom exhaust. We haven't been pushing him to bring it back just yet given everything on the go here to be completely honest, but it'll get there and this was a lesson on not publishing the first video before there were follow-ups ready to go 😂 - Taz.
First off I think you need a special rail to adapt the R35 injectors but i may be wrong.Either way with the power its making on 10 psi right now it'd max out the factory R35 GTR injectors on E 85. So between the upgraded wheels in the turbos, possibility of running E85 and wanting some headroom for later on they made a excellent choice of injector.
Should we film the next episode to this?
Yes please!
Or release it...? :)
yes! at the same point as this car so will be interesting to see power figures with the supporting mods
YESSSSSSSS! please.
Uuuuh, yes??😂

Is it worth to stall with itb from the past. Or move to better intake manifold?
keep up the great videos HPA. how do you find the hks f con v pro for tuning, are they still acceptable for a gtr with ITBs and garrett 2860-5 turbos? I will be taking mine for a retune soon and it also runs quite rich under partial throttle...10:1 ratio.
Thanks for the video! What are your thoughts on replacing the CAS unit with a trigger kit ? are there any additional benefits to having a crank trigger as well ?
Jedy Shishbaradaran I second this :)
G'day Jedy and David. Keep an eye out for Episode 2, the Nissan triggering system plays a starring role! Spoiler alert - Yes, we change it out for a replacement unit that fits in the stock location, but uses a VR sensor with fewer teeth :-) - Zac.
intriguing a VR sensor... I have been looking at platinum racing products trigger kit, will be keen to see what you have been using thanks!
Weres the next vid what was power on dyno??
Hey!
Great video!
Pulling the fuse to make it RWD is of course going to send all the power to the rear wheels. Is the drivetrain from the c/dif backwards able to withstand, say, 1000 hp? Where's the limit, do you know?
Great work!
Thanks Ben! - Taz.
Hey guys What's the best oil for a stock rb26?
Hi love the channel
I have a r32 gtr just seeing if I should go with a link g4+ or haltech plug n play
Both great options! Are you going to tune it yourself? - Taz.

Hi just made 554kw@ the wheels on jem dyno very happy with the tune im running a 6466.gen2 was in formed turbo is running out of puff on that rear housing .84 car its still a standard bottem end at the moment just seeing if adding timing on a built engine will make more power at the same boost 32 /33psi .
Is there a second episode ?

Will there be an in depth tuning video on this car?
We already cover all of the details you need to learn in order to tune a car like this in our course material ;) - Taz.
Would like a video like this on a WRX.
Wait? When did they make a 2WD GTR R32? Didn't they all come with AWD?
It's as easy as removing a fuse to make this model 2wd - Taz.
Absolutely beautiful car.
Aren’t they AWD though? Or has it been modified to be RWD ?
Shadowmiester1 The R32 GT-R is 4wd but simply by pulling a fuse you can run them as 2wd as they would have done in the video. The R33 and R34 GT-Rs cannot do this however as the centre diff/clutch pack is always preloaded with a little front drive.
Just pull a fuse and boom RWD
How did you properly delete/bypass the injector resistor box module?
Tyler B www.nzefi.com/product/nzefi-r32-r34-skyline-gtr-injector-resistor-delete/
SubboyGTR I'm looking for towards how to delete/bypass it without buying a new piece
I'm sorry, you asked how they bypassed it properly which is what I replied with as that is what they used. If you wanted to do it cheaply you can just hack off the plug and join all the wires together.
SubboyGTR oh okay I didn't know that they used an external piece. Thank you
where is the followup on this project?
High Performance Academy thanks! Cheers!
Is that g35 coil conversion kit available in NZ? I've gone through so many stock rb coils. I have a Link G4 PnP GTR ecu
Good question! I'm not 100% sure myself as it was Andre and Zac working on this, but NZ EFI will know and are worth a bell - Taz.
Still waiting on the solid followup video for this car.
We were just talking about it yesterday. It still needs some things finished (namely exhaust) so we're going to cover the dudes R34 first =) - Taz.
@@hpa101 Hurry up! I need a follow up.
address the weak oiling system!
tuurbow it's actually not bad for standard operation.if you start making more power your obviously going to have to update oil/cooling systems, look at the standard intercoolers, there tiny and good for fuck all.your talking about a 30 year old car remember, they might be new if your American, but they ain't new mate

Hi, I’m stoned. I fkn love cars and I play heaps of forza 😂. When I saw those rims, I had to like this vid cause they are super light weight in forza and hot 😂 lol.
Need help stock rb26dett r32gtr no boost ? Drive like an NA car
Part 2????
How much has been spent on mods so far?
What happen to the work I wanted to see it great stuff
She's still a work in progress and we'll have an update later in the year. We were too excited to sit on the video until we had the series completed haha - Taz.
0:22 looks just like the video games
ha, it does actually. I guarantee the walls don't let you just bounce off like nothing happened like in the games though haha =P - Taz.
Give us power in HorsePower!!!! not that sexually confused kW crap. Awesome Video!
Why is it running RWD?
Just preference - Taz.
i dont get it why anybody would have airfilter exposed to the hot hair in engine bay. its 30min job to build box for the filter and route some cold air pipes to it
I'm not sure why you're keeping hot hair in your engine bay either to be completely honest, but I won't judge you 😎 Seriously though, a cold air intake is on the list for the next round of upgrades.
Your main priority needs to be flow.
is an skyline r32
rwd
or
4wd
?
AWD, but many people run them as RWD. It's as easy as removing a fuse - Taz.
@@hpa101 isn't that unsafe?
Any updates?
We're still working on part two at the moment. Will have been to Pikes Peak and released 2 new courses plus some other material before we get to it but it is coming =) - Taz.
High Performance Academy awesome! Thanks for the update :)
@@hpa101 Fucking lair.
@@bfighter125 it's still coming, car just got a new exhaust system. Projects take time 😎 - Taz
Thanks for saying GTR and not GDAAAh like the bloody aussies. Love the channel btw, cant wait for the next clip !
Zac Youngson
You got a problem with us aussies?
The dude in the vid *is* aussie. Those guys rule!
The r34 GTR performs so much better than these. Thats coming from an aussie who has owned and been around GDAAAHs my whole life.
But considering the r32 is an earlier generation it is absolutely incredible, really every generation was a major upgrade. R33 knocked 20seconds of the nur and well yeh the r34 really needs no further explanation. The r35 will be considered part of the family eventually, it has phenomonal performance.
so it means you cant go 1000 horsepower on this gtr?
With the setup in the video, definitely not, or maybe just once and very briefly? 😅 - Taz
The link can definitely control an aftermarket fan on the radiator as well as the existing A/C fan in the front
John Ha Cheers dude 👍🏼
We will be switching to a different radiator with an electric fan, however in our own experience you're unlikely to see a worthwhile power gain from losing the viscous fan.
May I ask how much this tuning costs.
We don't do customer tunes so I couldn't tell you sorry! We can teach you how to tune yourself which you can email me about if you're interested, otherwise, if you're looking to have someone do it for you then you need to ring around your local tuners :) - Taz. support@hpacademy.com
High Performance Academy Alright thanks Taz
No worries. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! - Taz.
Sickest Boston, autralian accent ugh heard
*New Zealand ;) - Taz.
Why is it only rear wheel drive though? It's a gtr it should be awd
The owner prefers to run it as a RWD. It's simple to do :) - Taz.
In for results
Pull the motor single turbo it with a nice wee holset and do billet oil pump gears, best thing you'll ever do to a stock RB26. Thank me later lol
Single turbo setup has been waiting to go on this for quite some time. It will happen this year =) - Taz.
@@hpa101 Awesome! Definitely keen to see that. I'm pulling my motor soon. Putting a .61 hks t04z on mine. Have you got the water and oil lines sussed?
bro where's the update? Its been 2.5 yrs.
Lol 😂
Why would you not use id inj given how much better they tune up..dont say cost!
The customer got excited and bought a lot of parts before talking to us, otherwise, we probably would have used ID1000s. To be honest, though, these do a good job and the company that provided them is reputable and tested then provided the required injector data themselves which is a handy touch =) - Taz.
WHERE'S THE NEXT VIDEO
It's still a wee while away yet, but worth the wait ;) Have a crack at some free lessons in the meantime - www.hpacademy.com/free-tuning-lessons - Taz.
So how did it go 🤣
It's still ongoing.
@@hpa101 Ha ha ha I'm in the GTR rabbit hole now!
@@god084 it's a slippery slope right haha - Taz.
@@hpa101 2.8 stroker kit seems like a great idea lol
fucking amazing video....!!!!
1000cc injectors and stock turbos? LOL. R35 GTR injectors and coil are where it's at for under 550hp
@SouthJerseySound nailed it! Headroom for what comes next was the ultimate deciding factor 😉- Taz.
