    Dave- the reverb variation on that PLT riff totally jumps out for me. Never knew who was responsible for that brilliant detail. Well done! (7:30)

    I don't think anyone has mentioned yet the similarities between MFTM and Recoil - Hydrology (which was released only 4 months later), particularly 'Grain' reminds me of 'Pimpf'. I guess that was Alan's sound at the time. I appreciate your interview with Dave Bascombe especially as it confirms Alan's vital importance.

    Very insightful video again. It's clear that Alan was the driving force in terms of sounds, given the number of times his name was mentioned (and the alarm went off ;) ). What's also clear is that from the golden age (BC, MFTM, Violator and SOFAD), is that in terms of sound creation in the studio these days, it seems like they can't be asked and rely on presets. Maybe that rule should have been kept?
    Very much looking forward to part 3. Great stuff Vaughn

    The main thing I disagree with, is the welcoming warmth of Dave's love of guitars being introduced in DM music. To me, personally, it was the beginning of the end of the Depeche I became obsessed with in the wee early years. This lead to more guitars and live drums to the point where the band became a hybrid rock-electronic act. It's their career and they deserve everything they've achieved, but for me the defining, cutting edge Depeche were their years in the 80s. Love DM forever!

    • @VaughnGeorge
      @VaughnGeorge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George hi !! Yes that is a view that many other DM fans would agree with. There are those also who welcomed the addition of guitars. I personally was open to the addition of guitars but I am not keen on this more "bluesy approach" they have been leaning into on the more recent albums. VG :-)

      @@VaughnGeorge Vaughn George Everyone is right and no one is wrong when it comes to taste. I am much older than you Vaughn, I was a rock guitarist in Australlian rock bands back in the 1970s but revolted against the entire scene in the later part of that decade leading into the early 80s. I was convinced and obsessed in and with post-punk synthesizer pop, early drum machines with relentless metronomic rhythms and sound pallets and arrangements that owed little to what came before.
      In the early days Depeche even frowned upon chords considering them 'cheating' they instead composed intricate yet simple counter monophonic melodies, much like in classic music. This was my new world. A new brave world that moved away so much from the past, away from cock rock, away from guitars and live drums and the way songs were written & performed. A new subculture was born. Depeche Mode was exactly the type of band I wanted to be in. No one but no one were similar to DM, no one wrote and produced songs and sounds as they did, and live they were mesmerizing and so fresh. Live In Hamburg, 1984 is my favourite recorded DM concert.
      So when later they started introducing guitars, and then live drums it alienated me. I began to lose interest. My personal history had me becoming disappointed in what I viewed as a return to the old ways. I had no interest in this, i had no interest in a hybrid band, which is what DM eventually became.
      Much love to them though, they've created such a legacy and 40 years on still proving they are worthwhile. Love them always, but mostly because the moved my tectonic plates around 40 years ago.
      Thank you so much Vaughn for the BRILLIANT work you are doing on your channel, the reviews the interviews. You're a valuable wonder to us all. Keep safe and healthy! George
