    The Alan fanboy stuff is killing me with laughter

    • @TheGreatGodPan
      @TheGreatGodPan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is warranted, he added so much to the band and doesn't get enough credit for it, all due respect to Gore and all...

  • @TheGreatGodPan

    Always interesting to get more "unofficial" insight into Alan Wilder's role in the band as it's always been sort of swept under the carpet because of their dubious crediting rules, it confirms what many suspected really, Gore's clearly a great songwriter and did a decent enough job of learning from Wilder's influence, there are dark tracks on Ultra and Playing the Angel that naturally carry on in the same vein, but it's clearly Wilder who was the master at taking them to a whole new level and introducing this brilliantly textured, dark and layered sound that is what I love so much about depeche mode and what makes them so timeless to me, especially what one might consider their most experimental/least commercial sounding albums, Construction Time Again and the ironically titled Music For the Masses

    Great interview Vaughn giving us fans literally a behind the scenes making of a Mode album from someone first hand who was involved. On a personal level it reiterates even more so Alan’s input in the creation of past Mode albums and that post Wilder the albums especially since Ultra have lacked that essence which was evident when he was in the band. It’s also apparent that Alan should’ve had sole or co-producer credits at least on this album and not share credit with his fellow band mates which I imagine would’ve affected his royalties! Thanks for the effort Vaughn🍻

    That was just what the doctor ordered, an insight into the tssss sound on "Nothing" it must have been difficult for Dave to remember all the things going on and is very humble in the part he played on one of the best DM albums. These answers are the nuts to connect to the bolts we already know, now it all makes sense.
    Great interview Guys, Dave seemed relaxed, I like that he listened to the album before the interview, I wonder how he feels listening to it now.

      Not sure that was Humble more than Simply not remembering. He was barely able to stay in chair...loomed like he was melting.

  • @patee101
    @patee101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Wow!!! So the epic choir sound at the end of Never Let Me Down Again comes from Carmina Burana?! That's amazing! Thank you very much indeed Vaughn for asking Mr Bascombe one of my "long time wanted to ask" questions regarding the making of MFTM. I really appreciate it! :) Can't wait to watch part 2! (The only thing that makes me enjoy the interview a little less is that it's really difficult to understand Mr Bascombe's words for a non-native speaker as he speaks incredibly fast... I'd really love to get all the precious infromation he shares with us on the topic, but I'm afraid I lose about the 20-30% of it because I just don't understand what he says. Therefore, we, non-native speakers would be extremely grateful for the English subtitles I think. Before anybody suggests, no, even the auto-generated subtitles can't catch up with Mr Bascombe's pace of speech...)

    Excellent interview again, Vaughn! Bloody fascinating stuff! Regarding the sequencer they used, I don’t think Cubase was out in ‘87. Probably would’ve been Steinberg Pro12 or Pro24 in those days.

      Yes.. we let that one slip as Cubase didn't appear until late '89..
      Might have been either Pro24(as you said) or C-Lab Creator but was mostly done on the UMI-4M on the BBC Micro

    Strangelove was the first NEW 7" I heard with DM, and the album was the first album when released. Great job and great album.

    Wilder in 2000-01, in Steve Malins' biography: "The songs on MFTM actually stayed closer to Martin's original demos than those on Black Celebration and after that we said to [him], 'Leave the demos a bit less finished to give us more freedom in the studio'...I think that [a] problem was that perhaps Dave Bascombe was not an adventurous enough route to take...he did a very good, professional job but he wasn't a dynamic person who could stomp his authority on the album. I think he felt stuck in a position somewhere between engineer and producer."

    If you did an hour general interview, then did an hour per song I couldn't get enough. No pun intended. Keep up the good work. 👍
