    Really enjoyed this series. Nice to hear that the technological limitations shaped the sound of the album. Limitations breed creativity, and "Masses" has creativity in spades. Brilliant stuff Vaughn. Take a bow.

    What a dream come true if you managed to get Alan Wilder for an interview on this channel. When I saw DM in concert, I was a bit sad to only see the two of them. I know the “new” tour members have been with DM a lot longer than Alan, but they aren’t the original. Alan will always be a part of DM’s DNA as far as I am concerned.

    Lovely to hear Dave also went to MFTM tour gig and mentioned 'Pimpf' being played at the beginning of the show - yes, I remember that, too! The last song they played was 'Everything Counts' and Dave invited a girl from the front row to sing with him. This girl was so nervous, she sang all out of tune and everyone laughed and Dave kissed her on her cheek. Bless. Alan was laughing so much, he stopped playing the song. I'm glad I saw them before they progressed onto 'arena' and 'stadium' shows.

    This series was fantastic! Thanks so much! I know Dave references his Tears for Fears work often and indeed this was great work and a huge commercial success. However, Music For the Masses is just such sonically and musically much better work, which was not meant to be as commercial. MFTM allowed DM to leave smaller concert venues and begin selling out large arenas. That’s how huge an impact this album had on DM.

      Interesting to hear that it was Alan who got his way on this! I would have assumed the Martin/Fletch combo would have always got the final say on things. I remember hearing Flood say Alan and Martin were having it out over which version of Judas to put on SOFAD. Not sure who won that one...

    • @alejandromorales8715
      @alejandromorales8715 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Spanish taster wasn't particularly disliked by Alan. According to him, it's just a polished version of the studio demo that was recorded because Martin was attached enough to the original to want to preserve it in some form. But the album version was always the intended one to be included.
      Alan got his way a lot or he wouldn't have said he was sort of the band's musical director. As for Judas, there's a Flood interview I can't find anymore in which he stated he was on Martin's side concerning Judas, but it was Alan the one who won.

    Hi Vaughn, I desperately wait for a serious interview with James Ford. His work on Spirit is outstanding. Though the album doesn't work as a whole, the overall production and especially drum programming/mixing is stellar and so much better then the previous 3 albums. Backwards, for me, is the by far best track they did since AL left.

    Vaughn, firstly - thanks for doing this...it must have been great to just hang out with Dave and mine his memory! and so great of you to share with us. I couldn't not go back and listen to the album again last night and I have to say, for as much as Dave discounts it as a historic period piece of learning - it holds up to me and it's a mark of brilliance in action - I had completely forgotten how this album is the pinnacle of their sampling journey and it's precisely this "sound" that got me into DM back in the day. I found them through the album People are People in the US in 84. MFTM It's a landmark album by all accounts and Dave's raw talent is imbued in it's DNA. Good stuff! Dave if you read this, thank you!

    Yeeeah!!! Thank you, Vaughn! First of all for inserting my stupid question about Fletch in there. second; for confirming my theory that the more you want to understand something, how it works, and how it came about, the more a mystery it becomes. It's exactly like nuclear physicists: the more they zoom in and feel like they are getting closer to the truth the fuzzier the image it gets. At some point, you just have to admit that it's a mystery and accept it. This doesn't mean that you won't discover some fascinating details during your quest, which you absolutely did and I love you for that. Cheers!

    Great interview series. Dave comes over as a nice bloke, and clearly a top quality engineer and mixer, but not really the main producer of the record.I'm really surprised that DM had decided on which tracks to use and record before he even turned up, as don't producers normally have a say, as an expert outside ear, on what tracks should be chosen?

    Fascinating to hear Dave say that BTW wasn't one of his favourites and that he never quite got that one. I suppose you can be too close to something when working on it, whereas for me, it is classic DM.

    Vaughn, Alan answered that SPANISH TASTER question on his QA: oldsite.recoil.co.uk/forum/qa/dmmftm.htm
    You see it asked+answered twice, first by HEIKO BRUNE, a bit more down by AARON HENDERSON.
    Basically Martin liked the SPANISH TASTER better and it was more like his demo (also being 6/8), but Alan wanted the dark 4/4 version and got his choice on the album.

    By the way, when you get to Violator, don't forget to talk about the pedal steel player Nils Tuxen. A Dane they must have engaged at PUK Studios, Denmark.
    Check out this video of him: th-cam.com/video/fGeObm8bgYY/w-d-xo.html and then consult the Violator cover and scratch your head for an hour, LOL.
    His name is Nils, so it is misspelled in the video title.
