Great Interview Vaughan, been hanging out for it for a while, love that album to bits and we are so lucky that Dave agreed to talk with you, fantastic to hear how he started in the industry and yes, being at the start of the technology revolution with electronic music and production/engineering and how much work went in to producing what we got to hear.

Dave Bascombe made those drums sound so massive and epic on MFTM. IMO never before and after this album were their rhythm tracks so natural sounding, even when they had real drummers in the studio, either Alan or other session drummers. To me MFTM is their absolute tour de force.

  • @ghislainrozet5982

I really appreciated the kindness and simplicity with which he answered you but it is also due to your own humility and the space you give him to express himself. Great interview, Vaughn.
I especially liked the moment when the current work is compared with the work of the "time before".
How can you produce well now if you didn't have your hands in the dirt before?
Being limited technically obliges us to compensate with more creativity, tests, empirically.
One could answer "ok boomer", but having had fun by let a drummer playing, placing his mics in front of his speakers to be able to resample a better sound and rework it, how to triturate a sound with your own hands is the essence of sound recording/mixing. What he was able to offer DM was the work of a real sound worker.
A farmer ploughing his field knows better how his land will react rather than just perched on a tractor connected to his smartphone :)
    Can't wait to hear more

Great stuff. My band have just produced a version of Relax to lighten things up during this rather dismal situation. We produced it separately from 4 different locations over a few days (in lockdown where we live) and we've got it sounding pretty similar to the original. To think of how much more money, gear, talent, precision, effort and time was needed in the 80s really makes you appreciate what the likes of Horn, Bascome and Jones were able to do in those days. The original records with the old gear still somehow sound better and more geniune than anything made these days with software. It's close but it just isn't the real thing.

About this modern digital VST thing. I heard about musicians that goes all in to use like all available channels they can in a program for one song.
"In this song I have used all the 99 channels that I could use!"
I never understood the idea about that. Its allmost like a kind of "sound masturbation". Its like they think that the more sounds and effect they put in to the mix the better the end result must be.

    • @FusedMusic
      @FusedMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

To be fair that's not always the case.
You can use many tracks to separate sounds clearly for individual volume settings as opposed to using too much automation on a single track.
Or placing layered snare tops and bottoms on separate tracks etc.
I find using more tracks a way to make sense of the sound field.
It's not always about throwing in the kitchen sink. 😉

Great point about making the most of what you got. I’ve read interviews with OMD and Human League where they talk about the sound they had being distinctive, purely because of the equipment. Nowadays if you want a Moog sound, it’s so easy to get that from any number of sources. Back then, you either had to buy one or know a mate that had one. If not, you stuck with the keyboard you had.
