have had a problem with my honda mower for years. I took it to a mower repair man and he made it worse. eventually after a winter lay up it would not start so I decided to take a look myself with the help of this video and am so grateful for the help. the maim problem was that the guy who looked at it before when reassembling dropped one of the gaskets an one side.all good now thanks.
I think it a bit radical but I cut away the top part of the plastic cover behind the air filter to more easily get to the idler screw and to assemble. just cover again with some gorilla tape.

I really appreciate taking the time to do the video. With that said you didn't show which way the gaskets went on and in what order which was the reason I watched the video. Of course like many of us we forget the order thinking we will remember and then we get to it and the order is confused. I didn't remember which way the plastic piece when on it if I was putting it on the right way. The one I have is beveled and I couldn't remember if it went inward toward the motor or out , so I watch you and your hand was in the way so I didn't see. Every detail which is a pain I know but from each piece to each and every piece going on would have been helpful. Once again thanks for taking the time to do this, I don't want to sound ungreatful , the devil is in the details as they say

Wanted to thank you for the step by step, My Honda, was leaking gas all over the place out of nowhere. It was hard to pinpoint from where, due to air cleaner assembly. I literally watched you, pause, work on mine, play..pause..etc. Runs like a new, just got it off the bench. I really appreciate your help. .

For a carb set up like that would of been nice of Honda used two long studs and nuts instead of long bolts. Would make life way better

You can throw the machine in your truck or car and go to a hardware store and upgrade to studs and nuts. Sometimes though the studs come out with nuts, so I just settle for the factory setup

First off, Thank you for a great video ( all but forearms in the way as mentioned by other viewers) I have the exact motor as the one your working on in video , this spring it wouldn't start, this past spring ??? And I baby all my engines from outboard to mower to weedwacker to blower!!! Drain em in the fall ( bowl & tank both ) use Startron Fuel Stabilizer, keep plugs , oil new & clean , you get the picture, followed your video for taken apart & cleaning and it worked like a champ !!!! THANKS!!!!! But last week my wife decided to cut grass while I was working, AWESOME RIGHT ??? Wrong, she ( bless her heart ❤️) decided the under deck blade area needed cleaning, so she props the handle end under my boat trailer ( yep, she watches me and learns things ) BUT, SHE GETS OUT THE GARDEN HOSE AND BLASTS AWAY!!!! Doesn't tell me this, or the part that it wouldn't start again after she was done, so I'm like ok, water in gas ?? Drain it all , tank , bowl & lines, fill up with new , no start, shoot lil start fluid, fires up & dies, ?? Change plug, air filter & still won't start without a blast of SF. But cuts right off when SF is gone, take carburetor off, clean AGAIN , still no start , spray SF it starts then dies ??????? Please help any body ????

Great video. Thank you. I have the same engine on my power washer. The carburetor was filled with white gunk not allowing the float to work. I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, so I'll do my best cleaning with gas and engine starter. The old oil was like chocolate milk before I changed it. My guess is that water works its way into the engine. If I get it running, do you think I'll be OK or is it time for a new unit? Its not that old and I don't use it all too much.

So if you do this tear down & cleaning, put back together, & throttle lever is moving back & forth, causing surging, does that require carb replacement or is there something more sinister that can be addressed? Machine I worked on sat for 18 months & didn't start, period. Did the tear down, removed internal fuel line filter & replaced w/ small red B&S external universal filter you find in most stores, cleaned everything exactly as Jeremy noted, new plug, air filter was fine, & machine starts beautifully...runs smooth as silk sometimes, but most of time cutting grass, it surges like the machine shown @ beginning of this video. Did note, however, that in one part of my yard, consistently, the mower runs super-smooth, then goes back to surging in the rest of the yard. No difference in grass, not even thick or high, just low-cut crabgrass. Very weird. Machine = 2 year old Troy-Bilt w/ Honda GCV engine from Lowe's. My carb only has 1 bowl nut in bottom. Appreciate any bright ideas!

I’ve been cleaning my carbs for 23 years. Never had any issues. Now I have a gcv 160 and a craftsman snowblower that surges at idle with cleaning and with brand new carb. I changed the oil as well. I don’t know if it’s the idle spring or what? I’m totally stumped with these two. Maybe the circuit for the jet is clogged? I don’t know

I did the same breakdown that you show here...I removed jets and screw and cleaned all the things like you did..Even cleaned out the gas tank...screen is free and clean...
Mine has the slide in auto choke that rests inside the engine hole....GC160..older model Honda Engine...
Ire assembled everything back together and it ran great about 30 minutes and started surging again!! I’ve
Striped this down twice and it does the same thing....Should I check the wax on the auto choke??
Should I replace fuel lines? Should the carburetor be replaced?? I’m at a loss now!!!

James I watched another video that recommends upsizing a jet , (not the main one) ,if you cannot get a new jet then make the hole a bit bigger wit a very fine bit. The restriction had to do with some sort of emission control standard and with that came the surging which I have on my mower. Search here on youtube something like" mower surges or hunts" and you should get some links that explains the situation

  • @ProMachinist
    @ProMachinist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video and nicely narrated.
If you look at the air filter side of the carb (the front), you will see what I believe to be an air bleed hole on the upper left. Any ideas why fuel runs out that hole when mowing on a side hill. If you look closely, a gasket goes on before the filter housing and it too has a hole cut out of it. Then, if you look at the filter housing (backside), you will see a groove machined into the filter housing to allow fuel to run down the base of the filter housing and onto the deck. My question is why? Is this hole supposed to have a plug in it? Andy..

mine needs to be choked for a lot longer than it should. I think the jet may have a piece of dirt in it causing it to run lean. Thanks for the video. I'll clean the carb and get back to you. Also, mine wouldn't start at all for a while, I found the intake valve stuck open. Cleaned the valve stem as best I could. Now it runs, but needs some choke.

Most Honda OEM carbs are inexpensive, less than $25.00. There are exceptions.
Some are quite pricey, then it’s aftermarket for me. I had a huge generator in here 3 years ago, the carb alone was over $150.00.
Complete aftermarket with solenoid, and gaskets was about $40.00, as I recall.

Also, wish you'd covered in a bit more detail where that piece of metal above the carb (part of the choke?) went. You said the carb needed to go to the left side of something, but I didn't get a good visual since you weren't able to video it.

It's amazing how people neglect basic maintenance. 1 hour a year and proper off season storage can save so much headache.

Before I clean the carb, I want to clean outside the engine. Do you have any recommendations on a mild degreaser? I used a degreaser to clean my oven. I wore gloves, but it got on my arms and I regretted it every second afterwards- until the burns healed 2+ weeks later.

THEMOWERMEDIC1 THE SMALL ENGINE SPECIALIST thank you. I picked some purple power up today. You seem to like it and (in general) it seems to be a popular cleaner. I’m looking forward to trying it out. Will still wear gloves ⚡️🔥🔥

I’ve had my push mower’s carburetor submerged in purple power and water 1:5for over 40 hours now. I didn’t realize how strong and corrosive the stuff is until I tried it on some metal. day after I submerged. I should have listen to your instruction 😑

Great video. I have a couple questions. My Husqvarna LC221RH model that has the GVC160 engine has a different choke set up. Mine has a plastic automatic choke assembly. It also has a Thermowax that heats up and apparently operates the choke. My mower started purging so I replaced everything the carburetor, gaskets, choke assembly & the thermowax. Unfortunately my mower still has a surge to it. When I ordered my parts from Amazon I noticed that their was two part numbers for the thermowax. What is the difference between the two part numbers. Your reply will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

No I read a lot about after market parts. I ordered all Honda original parts. Do you have a video explaining the choke operation on my style engine.

Hi I have watched your video it was very help full, however it was still surges, after two sonic cleanings! So I got a new carb thinking that would take care of it , nope still surges.so what do you think I'm missing? any thought's would be help full.

      @allthetea001 8 ปีที่แล้ว

From what I've read recently, you may have a vacuum leak. Buy a cheap $2 can of carburetor cleaner at walmart or any auto parts store. Start the mower and while it surges spray around the carb where it seals (which should be behind the air filter). If the surging stops or if there is any change, then too much air/oxygen is getting in. If that is the case, check that your gaskets around the carburetor are seated properly. If they are worn, look for a gasket set and replace them. Hope that helps.

Great video. Question. I just took out my Honda power washer, GCV160 , out of storage. Hasn't been used in like 5 years. I cleaned out the fuel lines and the gunk out of the carb since my dad thought it was smart to leave gas in there. Finally got it to start. But the problem is it only keeps running while choke is on. Doesn't have to be full choke, but has to be about 50%. I think i missed a couple of things that could have been cleaned in the carb, but is this usually related to the carb itself of could it be maybe that the fuel filter is bad?
    Thanks

See my other comment from today. Consider buying a new carb on eBay or somewhere else. I did that and saved a lot of time/frustration. The new carb cost less than $15 and my GVC160 runs great again!

I am working on a Honda GX390 I replaced the carb with a new OEM part and It will run for minut or 2 and then stahl out I check the oil and it appears to have gas in it. Can you help me with that please?

What else can you clean the parts with?

  • @bthor76

I need help Jeremy. My 160 is running real rich I think. It runs good for the first minute or so (when cold) then it slows down and belches black smoke. The exhaust smells rich with unburnt fuel. It made me nauseous just standing around it trying to get it to run right. The spark plug gets covered with black powdery carbon after only a few minutes. I took the carburetor apart and cleaned it. Removed the main jet and made sure all holes were open. The only thing that I didn't do was clean the fuel transfer port screw. That's my last hope of finding the problem. If that's not it I will have to change the carburetor.

Check air filter and also make sure choke is in fact opening up....then check spark plug and replace to see if that fixes...also could be coil that is giving a weak spark

hello, I just took a carb like this apart but it has the idle screw.
I cleaned it soaking it in carb cleaner and blew out the orifices with air. the carb had old dried gas in it. seemed to be clean.
when I put it back to gather it will start with starting fluid but stops. the bowl receives gas but gas does not get further.
any suggestions? I removed the jet and tube and it seemed clean and was blown out.

Mark Overgaard Did you figure this out? I have the same problem. I cleaned the carb, jets and everything else. Seems ready to go. Put on the choke. Mower doesn't start. Gas flow is fine. Bowl fills. I've cleaned all kinds of carbs, but this one has me stumped. Briggs and Stratton are much easier. This carb is also a total pain to get on and off.
