have had a problem with my honda mower for years. I took it to a mower repair man and he made it worse. eventually after a winter lay up it would not start so I decided to take a look myself with the help of this video and am so grateful for the help. the maim problem was that the guy who looked at it before when reassembling dropped one of the gaskets an one side.all good now thanks. I think it a bit radical but I cut away the top part of the plastic cover behind the air filter to more easily get to the idler screw and to assemble. just cover again with some gorilla tape.
Hello sir, a little hint (or is it tip?) on reinstalling the carb: take two 6mm bolts with aprox 9 to 10 cm length (sorry for not calculating them to inches, allready late here) and screw them into the holes of the block. They need to be without heads ofc. I cut mine from a threaded bolt and carved some trenches into them to drive them with a flat screwdriver. Then put all the stuff - isolator, air shield, gaskets, carb, throttle plate and airbox - onto them. Press all of it against the block, remove one of the bolts and insert the original screw instead and tighten it just enough to hold. Repeat with the second bolt and screw the tighten both screws firmly and that's it. Best regards, Thomas
Put your parts into a jar full of gas and it stops making a mess of your ultrasonic cleaner. Plastic bags work good to . Then just use water in the cleaner. Great information as always.
Ultra sonic cleaner i have been using one for years with model airplane engines best tool i have purchased excellent video.Works great on mower carbs also thanks great video
Thanks for the vid. I got a new carb but the plastic choke piece was broken 🙄 so I just cannibalized the new one. I used 3/16 dowels in place of the bolts to keep it in place until I was ready to bolt it down. Didn’t have the fancy cleaner so blasted with carb cleaner in the spots you mentioned. First pull started and running like a charm!
Amor medical my name is Jess Ramirez from California I like your videos and keep on playing those good videos okay I find you very interesting when you do your work good job bye-bye
I’ve been cleaning my carbs for 23 years. Never had any issues. Now I have a gcv 160 and a craftsman snowblower that surges at idle with cleaning and with brand new carb. I changed the oil as well. I don’t know if it’s the idle spring or what? I’m totally stumped with these two. Maybe the circuit for the jet is clogged? I don’t know
I have that exact carburetor on my mower. Can you give me a part number for the carb and a part number for a gasket kit, please? A video explaining how to order parts would be awesome. Thanks!
Great video please keep them up! Here is my problem i have the honda 160 pressure washer. 1st time using it this season and four hours worked fine. Then i applied soap and then just died. Cleaned carb, spark new, air filter clean, blowed out fuel tank and lines and filter, checked oil and even sprayed quick start and wont turn over it is 5years old is there anything else i should be looking for? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for this video. It's been years since I stripped and cleaned a carb so this video was a great refresher to watch before I start. Best to you and yours.
I guess nobody at honda has ever mowed a lawn. Who would have thought that a mower would kick up a bunch of dust that will clog the air passages in the carb if you use unfiltered air? Using bolts instead of studs for the carb mounting makes something that should be easy much more difficult. Honda made this engine to be cheap, not reliable. Great vid, I'm sure this has saved a lot of people a bunch of trouble.
I've had a honda push mower with this engine for over 16 yrs now - never a problem with it. I have a E3 spark plug for easy start. it still runs really great.
plug gap for your engine is 25 thou. e3 plugs are not adjustable and have a much wider gap causing the coil to over load u will not find any performance gains with e3 plugs
When you install the carburetor, there is the choke plate, you pushed that all the way right before sliding everything back and installing the bolts? I think I missed that when I put mine back together. Also I think I installed the throttle arm and spring to the wrong spots. It is tight and hard to see everything. I did get mine back together but when I did, the engine seemed to race for me. I’m used to it being a consistent cycle not like it’s throttling up on a runway.
Hey nice work I bought a non-running pressure washer for 50 bucks on craigslist. Watched this video only and had it running an hour later. Starts on a single pull and kicks butt! So 50 aquisition cost and less than 5 bucks for a can of brake cleaner and Im dancing! Thanks again!
Any machine that comes with a small carburetor should include how to disassemble and clean these in the manual as part of regular maintenance honestly, but i guess that's why they tell you not to use ethanol fuel in the manual in the first place lol.
Want to thank the medic. My mower was cutting off after it warmed up. Saw ur video on the mower with the same problem. Cleaned the carburetor like u showed. Mower back to normal operations. Thanks for ur videos...
Hey the choke wire that goes to the black plastic lever on the carb does it hook up on the inside hole or the outside hole I've cleaned mine up still won't run wondering if I put the connecting rod to the wrong hole. Runs like a champ for a few seconds on spray but won't run otherwise. Thanks
Hi I have watched your video it was very help full, however it was still surges, after two sonic cleanings! So I got a new carb thinking that would take care of it , nope still surges.so what do you think I'm missing? any thought's would be help full.
From what I've read recently, you may have a vacuum leak. Buy a cheap $2 can of carburetor cleaner at walmart or any auto parts store. Start the mower and while it surges spray around the carb where it seals (which should be behind the air filter). If the surging stops or if there is any change, then too much air/oxygen is getting in. If that is the case, check that your gaskets around the carburetor are seated properly. If they are worn, look for a gasket set and replace them. Hope that helps.
I got the main jet out easily enough, but even after copious WD40 and a sonic bath I couldn't press the emulsion tube down with an inverted Allen key using the bend as a fulcrum against the roof of the throat. What about using a 1/4" or 1 /8" something between the tube and the jet and screwing the jet back in to free it?
Great video. I have a couple questions. My Husqvarna LC221RH model that has the GVC160 engine has a different choke set up. Mine has a plastic automatic choke assembly. It also has a Thermowax that heats up and apparently operates the choke. My mower started purging so I replaced everything the carburetor, gaskets, choke assembly & the thermowax. Unfortunately my mower still has a surge to it. When I ordered my parts from Amazon I noticed that their was two part numbers for the thermowax. What is the difference between the two part numbers. Your reply will be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Got a 99 TRX450S that when trying to adjust the fuel screw I can close the screw completely and the bike doesn’t even drop an rpm it seems. When would cause the rpms to not change at all?
Hey thanks for the video. What size tank do you recommend for cleaning *most* lawn mower/weedeater carbs.... I want something that will fit 1 carb at a time fully submerged but not over kill. I don't want to spend more than I have to. Thanks
I did the entire repair and still had the surge... but it evened out with choke.., so I drilled holes for a piece of wire to hold it about an inch off full choke... I wanna know how that automatic choke works as there’s no hard lever... can I drill a hole and add a manual choke lever??? Or does that choke work off the impulse...I saw impulse ports in the gaskets and on the back of the carb...but the intake block didn’t????
Eck....followed all the instructions but my Honda GCV160 is now surging. I couldn’t find the video on how to remove the limit as for the idle mixture screw.....would that be my problem??
Just got down with cleaning the carb on my GC160. It wasn’t dirty but made sure all jet holes were open. New spark plug and gas and it still won’t start. Even tried starting fluid in the cylinder, still nothing. Checked for spark and it looks faint. Any ideas?
Get two long 6mm bolts (about 115mm or 4 1/2 inches long) cut the heads off then screw them into head then slide everything on them remove them one at a time while holding the air cleaner and install the Honda bolts.
Thanks for the video. Cleaned carburetor like you described. My mower runs very slow until it warms up and then runs fine. Any ideas on how to correct this?
I have a 2007 model Honda push mower took mine apart yesterday pretty easy too do mine only had a slight surge she is fixed sad how some people treat their lawn equipment use it and leave it all dirty great video
As a Quick fix you can blow compressed air into the fuel in of carb, I 've had that fix no flow or this problem. Obviously a full tear down will clean better.
I clean out the carburetor, change the plug the machine ran only on choke prior to carb cleaning. Now it runs fine but misfires several times. Do you think it is valve clearance issue? Would go ahead and remove valve cover to check the clearance? Great video!! Thanks I learned a lot from you!!
I have a Honda mower sometimes it will runs and sometimes it wants to cut out after awhile. I have reached the spark plu and the air filter. Today I cleaned the carburetor and it is still running on high throttle. Need help
Good video on how to clean a carb. But I bet the surging had a lot to do with that air filter don't ya think? Lol did you try it without the filter on it?
The fuel transport screw, that's what is trying to figure out. That fuel transport screw that is in my newer Honda 160cc in so tight I was afraid to try harder to remove it. The carburetor is clean, but the engine is surging after sitting in the southern Arizona summer for 6 weeks. I have glycol fuel stabilizer in it. I'm going to change the plug, put in new gas and add Seafoam petroleum-based gas treatment and then run it for 15 minutes and see what happens. Oh, and I'm going to clean out that fuel transport hole. But, I took the carburetor and main jets apart and it's clean. I have no manual choke. Thanks.
Man, I’ve got a newer model, pulled carb off and put back together just like I took it off and started great but it’s pouring fuel out of the small hole on the carburetor above the two main screws that hold it to the engine. Any idea what I missing here?

First off, Thank you for a great video ( all but forearms in the way as mentioned by other viewers) I have the exact motor as the one your working on in video , this spring it wouldn't start, this past spring ??? And I baby all my engines from outboard to mower to weedwacker to blower!!! Drain em in the fall ( bowl & tank both ) use Startron Fuel Stabilizer, keep plugs , oil new & clean , you get the picture, followed your video for taken apart & cleaning and it worked like a champ !!!! THANKS!!!!! But last week my wife decided to cut grass while I was working, AWESOME RIGHT ??? Wrong, she ( bless her heart ❤️) decided the under deck blade area needed cleaning, so she props the handle end under my boat trailer ( yep, she watches me and learns things ) BUT, SHE GETS OUT THE GARDEN HOSE AND BLASTS AWAY!!!! Doesn't tell me this, or the part that it wouldn't start again after she was done, so I'm like ok, water in gas ?? Drain it all , tank , bowl & lines, fill up with new , no start, shoot lil start fluid, fires up & dies, ?? Change plug, air filter & still won't start without a blast of SF. But cuts right off when SF is gone, take carburetor off, clean AGAIN , still no start , spray SF it starts then dies ??????? Please help any body ????
Great video! I have the exact carb. Looking to replace it. It’s in bad shape but having difficulty finding it. Do you know what part number I should use for it? Thanks!
I had somewhat the same problem with a mower of mine but mine would run fine while not mowing but when I started mowing it would surge & sometimes die. I cleaned the carb a couple times & blew out all the ports with compressed air to no avail. I finally found the issue was that the in gas tank fuel filter was partially clogged causing the mower to starve for fuel! On a side note, an electricians screwdriver works well for main jet removal because the blades have straight sides.
Question: Have a Troy-Bilt Honda 160 cc Push mower , got it give to me cause the gentlemen tore carburetor down twice and couldn't get it too run . Feather in my cap I got it to run due to the fact the the choke lever wasn't positioned right on the carburetor reinstall . Anyway the problem that I'm want to illuminate is on the first pull start up it has a puff of black smoke that goes away and it runs great - spark plug has blackened to rich showings . I've tore carburetor down twice myself and the float shows level on the closed position . Any ideas on this in case I decide to sell the mower - its in immaculate shape. And I want it not show this little burst of smoke . Thanks in advance - Troubled in Arkansas......
Good Video I tore my mower down to rebuild the carb but had a call out to a rig and was gone for 3 months and forgot how it went back together... your video help me get it back together in no time!!!
I had the same issue. To get my job done I opened the gas cap and it fired up and stayed on without the choke. This, however, is not a fix. Could still be the carb or perhaps needs a new filter. Maybe Jeremy Fountain will answer this. Good luck.

.04 3d printer jet needles are great if you want a wire with a handle and box
If the emulsion tube is stuck you can easily push it out from inside the bore, FYI.
You mean Venturi
What if the carb just blows black smoke at times is there an air adjustment or is it just dirty ??????????????

No I read a lot about after market parts. I ordered all Honda original parts. Do you have a video explaining the choke operation on my style engine.
Can I clean my carburetor with some plain ol hot water from the sink
Shouldn't the parts be rinsed in water to get the cleaning solution off before you use the compressed air?

You can putvtje smalll parts in a Little Cage people use for lose Tea Leafs
I noticed that my mower runs great since I used the canned 92 octane with no ethanol. Can buy at Home Depot and other hardware stores.
The brass tube that got installed before the jet, one side is longer than the other which direction does that go in?
It will only fit one way
To take the main jet out you insert a pin in the small hole on the side and then you can unscrew the jet out.

David Thorne those are not impulse ports they are atmospheric vents. And if u have to run on choke then u missed something in the carb

Check for dirty air filter acting as a double choke
Good Video I tore my mower down to rebuild the carb but had a call out to a rig and was gone for 3 months and forgot how it went back together... your video help me get it back together in no time!!!
i think what you did was unnecessary just clean/replace air filter would have fixed it,i'm amazed mower was going .
Lol ignorance is bliss
thanks got my pressure washer started back up! only stays running when on choke though any suggestions?
I had the same issue. To get my job done I opened the gas cap and it fired up and stayed on without the choke. This, however, is not a fix. Could still be the carb or perhaps needs a new filter. Maybe Jeremy Fountain will answer this. Good luck.
