If you like it, i recommend the Alice "Nico y Alenki" of Jan Svänkmajer, is a stop-motion movie.
Finally. I needed to know what happened to Alice after the events of Madness Returns. Now I know she worked at the opera for awhile.
I'm glad to see that not only did Alice not end up institutionalized again for avenging her family's deaths (and I hope the other asylum kids are doing well, too), but that she's gotten a job and is going on adventures and helping other people in their minds.
It is sad to think this is the last piece of Alice content we ever will get. If you think about it this is the last time we will ever see Alice. Well it was a nice ride, and this is a nice end.
After all the Alice series has taught us life isn't fair and to live through the hardship.

I really like this, I mean it's a group of 20 more or less people, with a very thin budget, and they did and awesome job with the little they had. I think we should not see it from the quality or production side, but from what's the escence of the film, what should mean to all McGee's Alice fans.

I am relieved: i must confess, i absolutely hated Leviathan, both in terms of story and visuals, but this one does retain the atmosphere of the two originals game while bringing the new creepy imagery inspired by Wagner's universe. Plus, the intro gives a hint of what might happened after Madness Returns. I hope the other ones will be more like this one, and less like Leviathan.
+Roxane Chaudier I think it's nice to see different interpretations... I preferred the story in Leviathan, though I love the visuals of both. I think they each show different sides to Alice: creepiness and oddness in this one and her dialogue and musings on reality in the other.
+stroomkrooma I see your point, though i believe "A Night at the Opera" does show the blurring between reality and "Otherlands" better, by actually showing the transition, not talking about it. It's just like in Madness Returns, when the elements surrounding the everyday life of Alice are found in Wonderland. It's something missing in "Leviathan", making its long dialogue quite confusing at moments.

+Roxane Chaudier I think both films are inspired by the atmosphere of the minds of the people who own them. Leviathan would be quite a bit farther from the two games because Verne's mind was more optimistic and exploratory than Alice's. Less broken, to be sure. So it's lighthearted feel was thematically appropriate for me.
It's a let down, if you're expecting Otherlands to be about Alice, since Leviathan was more about Verne. Alice's exploration there is more of helping Verne come to terms with his fear, so that she could recognize her own.
I’m not sure if you’ll read this or not but your Alice games mean a whole lot to me. It genuinely does break my heart hearing you retire but I fully understand and respect your decision. I genuinely would’ve loved to see you redo your oz adventures idea or find some way to get funding somewhere else for Alice asylum. I genuinely love your work and fingers crossed there might be someday that you will return to game development or get your Alice interest sparked again if ea ever wanted to do a new Alice game.

We have no way of knowing what EA is planning. All we can do is make them aware of our desire for a new game... and wait.

I don't care what anyone says I love these short films I'd love to see more Alice in the future whether its another game or many more short films.
Watching both films, I think I may have a clear hint who the main antagonist might be since I notice all of the antagonists in Alice have a thematic pattern going on which the first one being tentacles (the Queen), The Ruin (Bumby) and now there's seems to be Fire and Destruction theme going on...hmmm...Well I heard about the whole "Prisoner of the Mind" that Mcgee has spoken about but it seems whoever is the main antagonist it seems is probably a step up to Bumby who seems to want to destroy people's minds as if...
BTW: And I also like the way how Alice enters the otherlands of others which apparently they have their own "Rabbit Holes" with their own expy's of the "White Rabbit" (like the white paper cutout doll) which is rather interesting which also keeps the theme of what Alice is and how she originally got into Wonderland in the first place. I hope this idea transfers in game form which means Alice has to find "Rabbit Holes" throughout the real world to travel into the minds of others or maybe as if "Wonderland" could also be a "another universe" that reflects ours where it might be a collection of other people's minds formed into one big universe as if...
I love your game concept for Otherlands! It's much what I would personally want from this as a game.
There is such a thing in psychology known as the Collective unconscious, term introduced by psychiatrist Carl Jung to represent a form of the unconscious (that part of the mind containing memories and impulses of which the individual is not aware) common to mankind as a whole and originating in the inherited structure of the brain. The idea itself really goes into the theme of the first 2 games, so for it to be a big part of a possible third as far as Alice traveling to other's minds would DEFINITELY sit well with the rest.

I love all your works, American McGee! And I really don't care all the flaws pointed out by your fans especially the never-will-be-satisfied ones! Seriously, I appreciate how much you work so hard to keep Alice : Madness Returns alive. I thought the game version was the LAST one from you - but after seeing this; man I'm so freaking happy right now. I'm a BIG FAN of Alice : Madness Returns - and I'll always support you. And also, go easy on yourself! To me, you're like a celebrity of some sort. Celebrities do whatever they want to with their ideas; so really, in your future works, if you want to do Alice 3D model animeish then go for it! If you want to create a new character or make an MMORPG or whatever, GO FOR IT. Opinions are opinions; they're not supposed to change your original ideas! The games were brilliant, but this I'm not so sure.... I might need to see more before I can really get into it... It's not great, but it's not bad. Thank you for continuing Alice, but what has been done so far, could've been a little better in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love her and it was great to see what's been done... It's just a little less exciting than the games for me.
+Madelaine Edwards Totally understood. These are a strange departure, no doubt. Each director was charged with exploring a different psyche, away from what we've come to expect within Alice's Wonderland. They certainly pushed the boundaries!
The stop motion animation was good, but I didn't like Alice's design here. Also, I thought Alice would explore Wagner's ideas that inspired Hitler.
One really cool little detail - at the start, Alice doesn't have any blood on her dress. By the end, she has the trademark splatters of blood on her apron.

when I first saw the claymation, I was disspointed. BUT as the animation progressed it became less of an "I don't like it because it looks different" feel. the style grew on me a bit, and I was able to appreciate the entirety of the Alice aspect. By the end I was pleased with it, it's just nice to see more Alice.
The story, music and atmosphere are all superb but oh my, couldn't they make Alice look prettier? She looks hideous in this one. Absolutely hideous.

Honestly, I prefer it that way. She was way too pretty in A:MR. I can definitely appreciate that, but something in me gnaws for the blander appearance of the first game. I don't see any art anywhere that calls to that, it's all the perfect-features anime appearance she has in all the fanart everywhere.

I love these shorts and I didn't realize they existed until the other day. Your original Alice and Madness Returns are major sources of nostalgia for me. Im currently taking care of my boyfriend after a recent surgery and we are out of state. I brought my PS3 and decided to binge through the games. I've noticed so much I never noticed when I was younger. Everything just fit into place in my mind ha ha. Thank you for this wonderful series. I look forward to Asylum!!! And ordering that stuffed rabbit once I have the chance ha ha

now im even more disappointed, seeing both of them unfold. after many years, i expected much better... :/

It's important to keep in mind these animations were merely a part of the total reward package going to people who help raise funding to secure a film license option. Ive always been intruiged by the Alice in Madness story since I was like a small girl. I finally got to play it a few years ago at 22 years old and learn the whole plotline and gameplay. Just such a beautiful and tragic story and amazing concepts and art. Even looking at the extra content, you can tell the team put so much heart and soul into the development of all the game content. I absolutely love this game team. This and Pyschonauts both are games I really treasure. I can't wait to see what you guys continue to do!

As much as I love Alice... this was disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the voice and script were well done; however, the animation on this and Leviathan lacked.
If coroline and nightmare before Christmas had a kid this would be it. Love the stop motion.
I absolutely loved Madness Returns and am a huge fan of Richard Wagner so watching this was a sort of fever dream for me. Thank you so much! My only gripe was the music that was included did not take much if any inspiration from Wagner's score.
Wagner's mature works, especially Der Ring des Nibelungen, were all very cinematic in their composition that they very much could, without too much reworking, be made into fantastic background pieces to accompany the action on screen or even the levels if this ever made it into one of your games. A great candidate would be the Decent into Nibelheim which already has a sort of decent into hell sort of aspect to it that perfectly could fit here.
That said, again kudos to making this. If this ever made it into a game I'd be very happy regardless.

Recently (as in like 10 minutes ago) finished the Alice games on my channel. Absolutely loved them. Cannot wait for Alice: Asylum. Thank you so much for putting real effort into your games. You're really proof that games are art and can be truly great when made for the love of it and not simply for money.
I was excited, and then... My hopes were dashed, I loved the Alice games, both one and two, and was greatly looking forward to Otherlands, then I watched this video, and I just can't get past her lazy eye, I can't really focus on the story.
I'm sorry man, I mean, I love your work, your mind, and I'm very much looking forward to another game, and a movie in theaters, and I'm pretty sure that's what you want as well, maybe boot up individual Kickstarters for both of them? I'd be glad to support another Alice game, or a feature film. But this... I don't know man I just can't get into it, no disrespect it's just not quite what I'd hoped for I guess. Stop-motion is awesome, but the eye, I just can't do it.
On a side note, I'm really happy to hear you've acquired the film rights, I hope you can make it a reality finally after all these years! Congratulations!

I love the idea of this but the execution is a little lackluster. I would have much rather preferred a true sequel to madness returns that would've continued the story and given it a proper conclusion. But, anything that keeps Alice alive I see as a good thing, keep up the good work McGee and hopefully this'll help lead the way to a third game.

Everyone is being a picky asshole, I think this looked amazing and I think the stop motion is great, although I didn't really enjoy the other short film in the other lands series, I think it was a time well spent waiting for it... Hopefully we can see Alice back again in her amazing games. I would LOVE a remake of the original American McGee's Alice or a new game, but I guess I'll have to wait lol
When I heard Alice would explore the mind of Richard Wagner, I expected her encountering facets of his psyche, his antisemitism and his link to the Third Reich, his musical process, perhaps his arrogance.
I did not expect a very rushed production of the Ring cycle with little to no regard for Wagner himself.
We need a third game with: A new Jaberwookie and the levels that wouldn't be on alice madness like the moon and other ones it would be a really great game including this short film part of game

Lol, Alice's face is so weird XD Especially with open mouth, (1:39). And she looks quite old and always angry (that's probably because lack of emotions) :D In the first short characters were roughly modeled, and the animations were quite basic, but at least they looked attractive.
Also, I did understand nothing of the plot - maybe I should watch/read original Wagner's opera first. Probably because of that I liked the first short more - at least there was some talking.
Anyway, I hope the Kickstarter campaign reached it's goal and there will be something more of the series. Thank you for the games and shorts.
P.S: I have watched the new Alice Through the Looking Glass movie, and it seems to have some references to your plot: there is one creepy scene in asylum and the Red Queen's castle is made of red plants resembling tentacles. I was quite surprised :D

Actually, I'm a little disappointed too, and I belive that American McGee can fairly evaluate the results of their work. I remember when my fiancee asked me to install a game for her - Madness Returns. As a mmorpg guy I was absolutely not interested. But it ended up that we both sat at the computer marveling at every single detail of the game. I was wondering "who the hell has such a beautifull imagination?". Just every single detail was amazing. Actually, I think it's one of the two best games I ever played in my 34 years of life.
This game put further expectations very high, and thats why so many disappointed people. Probably I expected detailed world, where you need to pause the movie to watch background and smile, haunting melodic line, deep story...
It's still nice to see Alice. Really. But I hope I will see one day a game, or rendered animation that good like the Madness Returns. I understand that finding funds, publisher etc is geting harder this times. And the kickstarter is not allways a solution. Most kickstarter projects are not as good as regular studio projects. Even when the founds are impressive amount.
Mr McGee, You have created amazing univerce, I admired your imagination for a very long time. But if ever come a day of working on the next part of the story of Alice (whatever it will be) PLEASE just keep your eye on everything to make it so perfect as its possilbe. Just watch yourself every single detail :)

You know what's weird it makes sense for Alice's hair to darker as she gets older but like it was kind of weird how her hair went from being red to being black and in the canceled sequel her hair sometimes is red or a lighter brown or black is Alice dying her hair or is there something else happening cuz I don't know
I didn't even know about these two videos until today, and I guess a lot of other fans don't know either because they deserve more views. When I first got into PC gaming, the original was one of the most impactful games I played and I'll never forget it. Loved Madness Returns, too. It was also my initial, uh... let's call it "mind expansion" arc, lol. Good times. Thank you for everything you've done.
Interesting but these stories fall short for me. After watching them both, it feels like we are missing the inbetween for Alice. We know she lives in a londerland now, but the meeting with these people with out the story does not mash well. It can't be helped but I did enjoys these.
seeing this now, i just hope that one day alice otherlands may be a true game, te idea is fantastic and amazing, i would love to play that, now that we may have alice asylum, i hope it goes well to the game, i love alice games

This one was a ton better than the other one, the Alice universe would work really well following the same formula as Love, Death & Robots with a different animation style and story each episode. The world needs more of this version of Alice, I still adore the games and still love listening to the soundtracks to this day.
This was pretty cool, but Alice's facial expressions kept ruining the tone for me, particularly that dopey, open mouthed "surprised" look. It's really too bad there wasn't more time put into making the face sculpts for her feel a bit more natural, given she is the focal point of the short. It really is very distracting.
I also found the battle scene to be confusing. It could have been fixed with better storyboarding to begin with, but it's possible that better editing may have helped too. There were a lot of shots of her just flying around that amounted to nothing and probably should have just been cut. She wasn't dodging flames or anything, just flying, apparently aimlessly, and there was no real sense of where she was in relation to the beast a lot of the time during that scene.
So I guess I'd give it a solid 4/5. My problems with it are sort of nitpicking, but I did feel they detracted from the mood quite a bit.
Interesting. Like she stubbled into his mind. Unintentional and accidental. Different from Verne where it was clear it was her choice. She does not posses control of her powers. Or perhaps her powers sent her where she can do help regardless of her choice.

First of all, I would like to say I like this video. The concept was good, and it could be amazing in a video game if done correctly (own opinion). I do have to saw I REALLY hate dolls and the doll like appearances everything has. I've always hated doll, so this isn't my favorite work, but story- and concept-wise it can become great. Hoping for a 3rd Alice game. Good night.
I always thought stop-motion animation well suited this series! Tim Burton certainly missed his chance at working with you to make YOUR films. Instead, he made his movie.... which wasn't even an artistic comparison whatsoever to your vision. He didn't even use stop-motion which utterly puzzled me. Keep it up and ignore the hate. I have only one artistic suggestion for these out of purely personal taste: I suggest emphasizing Alice's eyes by making them a bit bigger, glassier, and more cat-like in shape. I think this would draw more character and expression out of her face as well as look more iconic! Just my own suggestion! But please keep making these, I love the whole stop-motion concept!
Edit: I hadn't realized at the time that this was the only episode made with stop motion animation. So I suppose you should nix my critique at the end, as it was specifically for this style of animation.
Rather... silly and anticlimatic, really. Atmosphere is top-notch, as usual, but it bears no resemblance to Alice - and the games' greatest strengths were always to provide either a distorted Wonderland (in the first game) or a disturbing, dark and adult continuation to the story (in the second one). This short has none of that. Makes me wish American McGee would drop the "Alice" franchise and start something new. I totally want to see him exploring Wagnerian legends in his inimitable style - but Alice has nothing to do with it... and it really shows.

Well...I have seen both cases of Otherlands and...they are not bad, but both have some glaring issues. In Leviathan Alice's voice and mannerism seem out of character...and for this...I do not understand her open-mouth expression. But if one ignores the terrible flight animation...it kind of reminds me of the old Tim Burton films.
I will always hope that there will be a third Alice Game. I really enjoyed Alice Madness Returns! It shaped me to who I am. The atmosphere was simply stunning and everything was so beautiful! Please consider doing a third game! ._.
As per usual American McGee's Alice is trying new things to certain degrees of brilliance. Though it might not be the twisted, macabre setting of the first game nor the mind numbing gorgeous chaos of the second game. It begins in a great direction which I am enjoying immensely. As a fan it is just great to hear Alice's voice again after four years of waiting. :)
honestly I'd be more comfortable if it kept to wonderland. maybe delving more into the madness she was forever lost in at the end of madness returns. The mind can be very wonderous but very cruel. Maybe send her through the looking glass to find her way out? All sorts of things can be twisted in the mind of a tortured soul when staring at themselves in a mirror. But up to you dear. Love the games very much.
I finished both Alice games this month, and I gotta say I love them! I know I'm very late to the party, but I fully enjoy any Alice content, and if you were to continue the series, even after 6 years, a different style for every episode would be cool! Kinda like that Tomb Raider animated series.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, part of me wants to love it and yet part of me wants to hate it. I enjoy the idea and feel of stop motion and yes these are the mad worlds of other people's minds but at the same time it doesn't feel mad enough, I feel like it should be more twisted, more intricate.
If we request enough from EA to make a sequel game may be they will make a deal with mcgee
I'm loving these video's at the minute, I think they strongly depict how eerie and strange the smartest of peoples minds are, and I love the fact how each video is made differently and don't really understand the negativity thrown towards it, just because you don't understand why they are like this and what the videos convey doesn't make it disappointing or poorly made, it just adds to it's whimsical and enigmatic atmosphere... as well as being creepy as hell, I hope there are more on the way!

Honestly that was a pretty poor and generic story compared to the previous game's story.
I was fine with he idea of animation... but i never would have thought like this. it's so unesthetically pleasing. not very happy... hopefully more games will be out. I thought they would ateast make it like the trailers.

I have been a huge fan of the Alice game for so long, I even dressed as the white rabbit from the AMR game.

I can appreciate the amount of time and effort taken to create such a well animated stop-motion short, especially in the theme of Alice, but based upon the comments it's clear the majority of American McGee fans are dying for a third game rather than a series of short animations.
We will never get a third game if they think this will raise fan support or critics and a larger audience's attention. This is just bad.

These stop motions should be in the cutscenes of the third game ( if we have one ) :) . That would be purrrfect.
That'd be hella cool and, would make since, since she's in others' minds. It could be like a flashback after someone reminded her of something or, a scene of why she went to the next person.
