I love the format of explaining this, oils are magical. Oils have much more to give than simply an "oil wash" - oils allow the easiest blends. Im on track by the end of January to finish my 9k all NMM necron force.
9k! Now that is impressive! And yup, oil blending is an absolute dream :D
9k NMM necrons???????????? why would you do that to yourself.........
Lovely work. The comment "I'm not worried about a bit of overspray... we will call that OSL and move on" properly made me chuckle 😂
Got to keep it real. I'm pretty sure that's where the whole notion of OSL came from -- "Meh, kinda works" ;P
@GRG Miniatures True 😆.
Honestly I think you might be the first person I've watched who's said use a thin brush for thin edge highlights so you get a sub keep up the good work.
Haha, love this! It’s a small but important point, I think! (Much like the brush you should use 😜)
Got some great ideas from this for the Fire Prism I just recieved, thank you. Doing my prisms a LOT different, keeping them clear, candy red, light coat of Alclad chrome (or copper?), and using SMD LED inside....because that's what struck me when I looked at the models. lol
Another useful tool for taking care of those sharp/weird edges is a glass file usually used for nail salons. Remove very little material and polish behind them. And they are dirt cheap.
Love the step by step with all the tips and rationale along the way. Subscribed
:D Thanks!
Good to see another video from you, great tip about using thin brushes for edge highlighting, I've noticed that a bit myself but hearing someone else say it really cements it for me.
Really cool explanation and I like the Tron aspect to Eldar vehicles too, very nice and great video too :-)
Thank you very much!
I just started experimenting with oils and love them. They really are an amazing tool to have in the tool box.
A real game changer for... well just about everything, but particularly efficient painting
I like your style. Not just the way you paint.
Thanks, Ben! :)
Great guide!
Thank you :D
Lots of great advice, can't wait to apply it to my own Ulthwe force
Was a bit of a surprise to find out the "gems" aren't gems, but looking back at old art and studio models, they've never been shown as gems either
Yup! Obviously you paint how you want, but generally if it doesn’t have a little raised border, you don’t have to paint it as a gem :D
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this.
I have wanted a white panel line and only saw black, and mine weren't coming out right with watered down
"Well call that OSL and move on" lol, love it.
:D
Keep it up! Bright future is ahead of you!
Kick ass job mate!
This was great, with my massive back log I'm always hunting for tuts with fast, punchy results. Subbed, more of this please and don't hesitate to go longer with video length!
Thank you! Go forth and slay that grey!
That colour scheme 😍😍
Thank you! They may be The Damned, but damn, they know how to pick a palette :P
You and marco sold me on using this over unvarnished Acryllic! Awesome! So much stuff out there says its impossible... sounds like they just didn't let it dry enough?
Great video and high quality 👌 subbed
:D Thank you!
This looks killer. I've been looking for a solution to white panel lines for what seems like forever. Thanks for the insights. I never thought to use oils because I was afraid of ruining any finish I had down.
You shouldn’t have any problem. Just bare in mind you might get some water-stain looking marks as the oils dry, but with enough time they’ll disappear.
Oils are great for panel lines because they are more vibrant than acrylics so pop even more than their acrylic counterparts
2022. Will this be the year I finally go for the airbrush?
You made that look easy good sir!!
Yessss! Do it! Along with Broken Toad brushes, the biggest game changer tool for my hobby
Great video! I would actually love to see some regular brush blend work on something with an Eldar tank's size and curves 🥺
OK! I’ll need to wait till something chunky comes my way, but will bare that in mind! :)
Wish I had seen this more than a week before Adepticon. This is exactly the lining effect I want to get on my Aeronautica Imperialis ships.
I'm sure they look awesome anyway! :D
Side note, I love the Falcon/Wave Serpent chassis. Reason why I play Eldar.
I play Yme Loc so the grey and orange is... Hard. Especially with highlighting these curves. Imperial players have it easy with their tanks.
I wanna tint the cockpits though, glad you hinted at the Tamiya paint. Was looking for Humbrol and can't really get it
Edge highlights on these panels really sucks due to shallow edges.
Don't get me started on sub assemblies. Most Eldar vehicles need to be painted in sub assemblies which makes gluing difficult.
Tamiya have an orange tint that would be perfect for yme loc. I use red tint x27 and it's great stuff for my void dragon grey and red scheme
The chasis is indeed absolutely gorgeous. Though I found out I was wrong! It wasn't a Jes Goodwin model :o
Happy New Year & thanks for your totally awesome & wildly helpful hobby tips!! Good luck with your rat stockpile 👍
Thanks, Gramps 😁
First video of yours I've watched, and you've earned yourself a new subscriber. Great stuff.
If you wanted to spend even longer on it, then perhaps glazing a few other colours into the panel lines could look good? Like a yellow when you go into the darker bits?
Thank you! Absolutely, you could. I have a chaos dread that basically uses that principle to add psychedelic/fiery red and yellow panel lines 😁
@@GRGMiniatures First video I watched too... so stoked on getting my Aeldari army started, but quick question: what are 'white spirits'?
@@GreySeerSqueek It goes by different names in different countries, whit spirit, mineral spirits, turpentine etc. If you go to an art shop and look for oil paint thinner, that should get you the right stuff :)
gorgeous
:D Thanks!
Awesome video, subbed.
Thanks for the sub! :D
Oil washes are 1000x better than acrylics. I love working with oils
I’d like to see this on some Necron vehicles
Noted! I’m not a ‘cron collector, but if any pass my way as a commission, I’ll be sure to film :)
Very nice. Airbrush the weapons with a quick tape job will speed them up.
I don't know why I'm always reluctant to mask, but you're right, that would have been a good choice
Sub'd! Nice vid, and please keep it up!
Thank you! Will do!
Fantastic info and presentation, great video! Music is a bit too loud, but that's alright 😄
Noted on the music, thanks! :)
VALENTINE!
I don’t understand this reference but I’m here for the enthusiasm! 😂
@@GRGMiniatures @GRG Miniatures it's the name of the backing song you used by Wintergatan
Damn it, I did know the reference I was just being slow 😅
Is panel lining possible with metallics? Because I've been thinking about having a Black and Gold scheme, and having the gold be the lining feels like it would be really cool. Would there be any additional problem I'd have to deal with to do so?
You can get metallic oil paints that I’m sure would work just like this (tho I haven’t used them myself). The only thing I’d watch out for is the mica particles. They’re probably a lot harder to clean away completely, so you’d have to be a little more careful when adding the paint.
@@GRGMiniatures Thank you for the reply! I'll try and give it a shot.
As a fellow Craftworlder, I have to say amazing work!
Can I ask i find myself intrigued by that flying base you use for your prism, can i ask where you got it?
Thanks! The flyer bases are a custom job I print on my FDM printer. I can supply the STL files if you have a 3D printer :)
@@GRGMiniatures Oh sorry I need to get a 3d printer first haha
But the base you used does give some very cool ideas and the painting on the model itself is phenominal and Inspiring!
awesome work! curious about that base though, what is it?
That’s a little custom job I modelled and 3D printed. I can make the files available if you want :)
@@GRGMiniatures That would be slick, looks alot more sturdy than the pegs we get lol
@@blackehartrc395 OK, check the vid description for a link to the STL :D
@@GRGMiniatures got it and downloaded, that is awesome! I also went and picked up some titanium white oil paint today too! Thank you so much!
hello i would like to try your tutorial, i just have the problem that my oil paint just doesn't "liquefy". i also have winsor oil paint and i can soak it in thinner it stays together and just gets very soft and not as runny as in your video. what am i doing wrong?
Hi there! What thinner are you using? It should be 'white spirit' or 'mineral spirit' (it can go by a few different names depending on your country -- if in doubt, go to an art store and look for oil paint thinner!). You will need to thoroughly mix the paint in to this, not just wait for it to disperse.
Meanwhile me who is a gundam builder: **laugths in gundam markers**
This is the kind if cross-hobby sharing we need! Will definitely check those out
@@GRGMiniatures I would also recommend the Tamiya pane line accent colors. Those are pretty good
Just want more harlequins.
Haha, noted! Might be getting some new models this year from the rumours…
@@GRGMiniatures woooooooooooooo yeah baby! That's what we've been waiting for.
That was a really cool and informativ video. I just felt that the music was a tad too loud
Noted! I brought down the level a bit in the latest vid -- I hope that's better!
613th subscriber :D
🥳
Didn't hear it in the video but did you varnish before the panel lining ?
You mentioned that it's not needed, so was just checking
Nope, not varnished at all. As long as you’re gentle with cleaning, varnish shouldn’t be necessary
Perhaps obvious on reflection, why didnt you paint the weapons using your oil titanium white? Oils have very high opacity...
My experience is that when I thin oils to a consistency that doesn’t leave obvious texture, they aren’t significantly more opaque than acrylics of a similar consistency. That’s why most ‘all oil’ painting techniques still rely on a rough acrylic under-painting.
That said, everyone’s milage varies, and it’s definitely something I’ll try next time I forget to leave my weapons seperate!
Kinda intimidated by the new technique - never used oils before, just acrylics - but I feel like it'd be great for tau vehicles, so I might give it a go!
You absolutely should dive in and try oils! I’m sure you’ll have a great time with them when you get used to them. Also, if you’re a Tau man, keep an eye on the channel - there might be a video for you coming very very soon! 😉
Tried this. Total mess unfortunately. Im using black oil paint on a teal tank. The oil and white spirit mix goes into the grooves ok, but when i try to clean it up with a brush it comes out again. Its left smudgy stained grey black bits on my teal paint
Lovely video. Shame about the very distracting music.
I've brought down the level of the music in my latest vid. Hope it's a little better :)
Music was way too load and intrusive
I've brought down the level on my new vid. Hope that helps :)
