  • A video that has been in my thoughts for a long time now since starting this channel… welcome to the slightly less professional unofficial buyers guide/review of the Ford Focus MK1 as it stands as a modern classic of today. Hopefully this will reach a wider and newer audience for the car and helps preserve and enjoy these iconic cars for many more years! Excuse the loss of sound from my wireless mic, it gave up pretty early thanks to my incompetence of remembering to fully charge it! Hopefully this is a useful video :)

    I LOVE this car. I bought mine at the age 18 in 2003 and still is my second car, every day use for going to work 240.000 miles present day. The same model, 1.6 zetec SE. Oil consumption is high, probably by damage valves seals. Handling is absolutely great. Every time you need to repair something is always very cheap. The only feature I miss is the air conditioner.

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can burn oil quite a bit, changing the oil sometimes helps but at that mileage I'd say its just wear. Yeah mine doesn't have air conditioning I miss that in the summer months!

    Glad I've found your channel (and subbed). Excellent video and will work my way through all the others very soon.
    Had my first Focus back in 2004, it was a 3 year old pre-facelift 1.6 Zetec. Absolutely loved it.. except for the lack of A/C!
    Last year I gave my B-Max Titanium to my missus so I could pick up another focus as I always missed the old one. Struck gold, paid £1500 for a 2004 Ghia 1.8 with 62k miles in magnum grey. It has the cream interior with 2 tone dash which I completely love and is in beautiful condition. Only thing that doesn't work is the driver side heated mirror and the 2 front doors could ideally do with a machine polish. Bodywork wise there is no rust (very surprised) but haven't been under it yet or removed the wheel arch liners.
    Agree with the pre-facelift airbag part looking much nicer with the smaller badge and nobly bits

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you and welcome Paull! That's a steal at that mileage... I actually have said in one of my videos that people who used to own one that hace since moved onto newer stuff - are going back to snapping nice ones up for the long-term. It seems I'm right, I'd look for a 1.8/2.0 model later down the line at least your guaranteed air con! Heated mirrors are cheap to replace its use the mirror itself with the element on the backside that gives up. Plenty of decent 2nd hand or new ones about.

    • @Paul_Davies77
      @Paul_Davies77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Usually Fixing & Tinkering
      Thanks mate. I have just tried a 2nd hand replacement mirror and that's not heating either so I've ordered a new (genuine) one so we'll see. Also jacked the car up out of curiosity and the underside is really clean too. Looks like it's been a dry weather car. Sadly it's not going to stay that way as it's my daily.
      Do you recommend leaving out the front and rear arch liners then?
      Another car I would love (but my missus is having none of it) is a Rover R8. My dad had a '90 and '94 214SLi. Both he got rid of as milk tipped in them and could never get rid of the smell 😞

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Paul_Davies77 holy bugger been there! Had an St170 for a short time... the previous owner spilt milk down the back of the dashboard, stank to gell, I sold it on, last owner still complains about it after removing the dash and cleaning everything! Love the R8 brilliant design and one on my bucket list, I'd probably go for a 416 or 420 (if I can find one!). Yeah the heated mirrors commonly break so hopefully that works it's unusual to have wiring issues in that area.
      I would recommend taking the rear liners off and throwing them away. Hopefully it's done little damage and you can clean wire brush and either waxoyl or grab some dynax spray - it works a treat! I'd buy a can and spray the entire underside, exhaust, suspension everything apart from brakes. It goes on very nicely and finely. That way it's protected and can be used with less worry. With the liners out you can keep onto of making sure clay does not build up behind the rear arch lips!

    • @Paul_Davies77
      @Paul_Davies77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Usually Fixing & Tinkering I would love to see an R8 on your channel down the line 😉 Back in the 90's when my dad owned the pre and face-lift models (both were SLi). I always loved the face-lift more but these days I'm really loving the look of the pre-facelift model. Do you have a preference?
      Fitted my new mirror now and the heater works perfectly, very pleased.
      Discovered water in my boot yesterday too. I have dried it out and just poured a few buckets of water over it. As it's not going to get driven for several hours, I'll check later so if it's wet then at least I can rule out water coming in from the vents behind the bumper

    • @usuallyfixingtinkering
      @usuallyfixingtinkering  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats the best way to deal with leaks in the boot, its a slow process but you'll find it... tip use baby powder as it should where the water is running from!
      Thats grand I'm glad it worked having a new one, its a frequent item to break!
      Oh well I have been looking... my preference would be a pre-facelift... mainly because the facelift grille is very much an after-thought on the R8, but either given the conditon and price. I wouldn't want a complete rebuild like the 45, something a little more tidier to own and have for a while then move on (he says!).
