Jeremy Clarkson is driving Ford Focus MK1. old top gear

  • The Ford Focus (first generation) is a compact car that was manufactured by Ford in Europe from 1998 to 2004 and by Ford in North America from 1999 to 2007. The original Focus took its eventual name from a Ghia concept car which was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991. Engineers for the Focus, including Richard Parry-Jones, developed a class-leading, space-saving independent multi-link rear suspension, marketed as Control Blade suspension, combining the packaging of a trailing arm, with the geometry of a double wishbone suspension. Gasoline engines available were the well-proven 1.8 L and 2.0 L Zetec-R units from the Ford Mondeo and 1.4 L and 1.6 L versions of the Zetec-S/SE units, also found in the Ford Fiesta and Ford Puma. The ST170 and RS performance models used modified versions of the 2.0 L Zetec-R. Originally, the only diesel engine available was the Endura TDDI (a development of the old Deutz-designed motor which Ford had been using since the 1980s). This was replaced in 2002 by the Duratorq TDCI.
Do you have one? Do you have driven one? What do you think about this car? Write a comment down. Thanks for watching. :)

I am still driving a mk1 1.6 hatchback. Used to belong to my parents, who got it 2nd hand in 2005😅. I've been driving it since mid-2016. It's done over 108000 kilometers since we got it in 2005 (they zeroed the odometer when we bought it🙈, but we believe it had approximately 20000 kilometers on the clock before that). It has hardly given any issues considering some of what it's been through. Built like a tank. And engine parts are easy(ish) to find, since the Zetec SE 1.6 is still produced

@@conorf8091 I'm never sure how to describe Fords. Take this Focus for example, it's an American brand of course, it was engineered (I think) in Germany, and was designed by a British guy (Richard Parry Jones he's called). I can never call Ford exclusively American, German or British regardless of its strong connections to the three.

I've had two diesels and three petrols over the years, and it's at its best as a bog standard 1.6 Zetec, IMO. In this trim, it's hard to overstate just how good these cars are. Brilliant handling and ride, lively, smooth and economical engine, great steering, practical, reliable, comfortable, quiet, well put together, and dirt cheap to maintain. Just the usual Ford rust issues as they age. If you get in a mk4 Golf after driving one of these, it feels like something out of the ark, dynamically.

My 20yr-old 1.8 3-door Focus will soon be off to the scrappie. Despite having no mechanical issues (apart from a slightly worn track rod end and an ailing fuel pump) - it's only done 69,000 miles. But now the underbody corrosion makes it an 'end of life' car. The front subframe looks a bit like Swiss cheese, and I hold my breath on bumpy corners, thinking that'll be the one on which the suspension collapses! But it's still the most FUN to drive. The handling is pin-sharp. The engine note reminds me of the old BDA engine. Popular rumour has it that the Mk1 was markedly over-engineered. I'll miss mine.

Fantastic car both in the city and on the highway, and the mileage is great. In 2. gear in the city, making a quick overtake is not a problem. And while doing 145 Km/h on the highway, you can still have a quite converstation with the passengers in the back. And the handling in turns on smaller roads is superb.

The focus did in Europe what the taurus did in America. It set a new standard of vehicles in their respective segments for the next decade.
Although, the competition is quick to catch on and I have always found the interiors of the competitors to be superior to this one. Their plastics are soft and gentle whereas in the focus, the plastics are cheap and brittle. It's also got a common fatal engine failure flaw around 80k miles. We've had a few of these, mostly in sedan version, and the experience has always been the same. We, then, moved onto camrys from the same time period and the interiors were much nicer. Heck, even kias from 2003 had a nicer interior and a more comfortable ride.

When ford wants to they can make a ground breaking world class vehicle, but that doesn't normally happen until their backs are against the wall.

'Road Rage' by Catatonia, from the (approx 1998) album 'International Velvet'. Brilliant album if you ask me. I have both it, & a 1999 1.6 Focus which I have owned from new. I'm the epitome of one careful lady owner!

I had a 2002 1.8 Zetec and I found it very uncomfortable. Awful seat/seating position which caused me a lower back/leg ache. So much so that I remember just half hour in traffic I had to stop and get out I was in that much discomfort. Ironically the only other cars I have ever experienced this same pain were also Fords - a KA and a Fiesta.

An old car but considering what was in the market at the time it was launched, it whet the appetite of consumers. Not only did it look a cut above the competition, it pretty much was in most aspects.
It was a popular car and each iteration of it slowly became boring until its final version now in 2023.
Gone were the sharp design cues and making a car stand out. Instead it became mundane and bloated.
Ford certainly needs to throw out the U.S-centric design language and make a car that will set the bar for affordable cars.
But profit margins are tight and the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo have and will soon to be left for dead in place of....well, overbloated and expensive electric SUVs.
The days of fun, nimble and fast handling small cars is gone. But then again, on todays roads, where are you going to enjoy driving in any car really?
