I remember flying on a Delta L-1011 into South Florida during a tropical storm and the pilot made a point of announcing that because we were in an L-1011 they were going to allow us to land because the plane had an advanced landing system...It still was one of the scariest approaches/landings I've ever been on.
Loved the L -10 as we called it - however it always flew slightly nose up - making it harder to push fully loaded carts from aft to fwd. . . One of the last truly great aircraft.
The L-1011 was the first wide body I ever flew on. I think I was 8 to 10 years old and it struck me with such awe compared to the MD-80s I had flown before. So big!
Ditto! I started out flying on Delta's 1011's, and then Eastern's and TWA's. It was one of the most comfortable planes ever, and I'll always remember the "buzz saw" sound of those Rolls Royce engines at takeoff.
My dad's colleague used to be a mechanic of HECAO, which helped Cathay Pacific to maintain their TriStar fleet back in Kai Tak.(Cathat Pacific operated 21 TriStar until 1995) He said the L-1011 was one of the most advanced jet at the time. But what he most unforgetable was the beautiful Rolls-Royce RB211 engines, which was the engine type he fix the most, espically the rear one on the TriStar.(Cathay Pacific's Boeing 747 fleet also used the same series of engine)
Did he ever tell you that thanks to RR the L-1011 was extremely delayed to market, they lost a lot of customers through order cancellations. Lockheed trusted RR with an exclusive contract, the latter failed to deliver and declared bankruptcy. The British government had to bail RR out to save a diplomatic nightmare and ensure RR fulfilled their promise to Lockheed who were mucked around for ages. As a consequence Lockheed pulled right out of commercial aircraft production. A real shame, they had designed and built excellent aircraft over the years, and always were ahead of their time for the era. When McDonnell Douglas realised the L-1011 was going to be delayed, they rushed their DC-10 to market before it was ready and much to the discouraging behest of their test pilots and design engineers. They managed to scoop up a lot of would be L-1011 customers, in addition to all those customers cancelling their L-1011 orders due to the delay. Because there were still a number of unaddressed 'bugs' that needed ironing out with DC-10 they suffered a few accidents and incidents. They may have scored a few more sales but at the expense of the aircraft’s reputation and people's lives! That arrogant culture caused quality and safety issues with some of their other products also including the DC-10 successor, the MD-11. McDonnell Douglas was absorbed into Boeing, unfortunately that included a number of their executive management team, Boeing also unfortunately inherited their management's culture of being dismissive towards test pilots and engineers and made the same deplorable arrogant mistakes with the B737 MAX!
I flew on alot of them. As a kid and still, remember that rush on the ramp up on take off. It is sad to see them almost gone. 727's are in the same, on high place. Thoughts were planes. That had true soul, to them
My Dad was an Eastern pilot, and I grew up flying on L1011s, thanks to Dad’s awesome family flight privileges. We also enjoyed flying on Delta and TWA’s L1011s, and each airline made the experience unique to their carrier. With such a huge demand for airplanes, I hope Lockheed develops another unique, awesome airplane. I’d be thrilled if they came up with an L1011neo. Come on, Lockheed Martin, let’s get this going! ;-)
I flew on Eastern Airlines L1011's multiple times between Toronto and Ft. Lauderdale, as well as Air Canada's L1011 between Edmonton and Toronto. Remains my favourite airliner to fly on to this day. Was extremely smooth flying, comfortable and roomy.
I've travelled on quite a few Tristars. Very nice planes for their time. One of the things that I remember being different from other planes was the doors. Instead of folding out on hinges, they slid upwards into the body of the plane. Very sleek and futuristic.
That was a typical Lockheed design. The Constellation, Electra, and Jetstar all had them. That’s why the Constellation was a favourite for gun running and the Jetstar was used in the movie Cliffhanger for the aerial transfer. The Boeing 767 used them before Boeing changed to the same style translating doors that Airbus and Concorde used.
I flew Tristars several times in the '80s and '90s, very comfortable and roomy. I particularly remember the ethereal growl of the Rolls Royce engines starting and at the beginning of a takeoff roll. It's something you felt, a presence, unlike any other jet engine I've come across.
My favorite airliner ever. We flew almost exclusively on TWA and Eastern in the 70's and 80's so I took L1011's pretty much everywhere I went once TWA went to using them more between JFK and LAX instead of 747's. I had the Flaps 10 books, wings from cockpit visits, everything. I miss this plane and era, and those airlines so much.
Yup, flew on it, with Air Canada from Montréal to Acapulco, and multiple times with Air Transat between Montréal and Paris CDG, even in the Club class (eq. to business class). I even sat in the cockpit for my last L-1011 flight, on a jump seat for the Take-off from CDG. A great experience, love it.
I was on one of the Eastern Airlines L1011'a a number of times as a young person. The doors were as close to the "Starship Enterprise" as one could get.... they disappeared into the ceiling and could NOT have been more comfortable as a passenger :)
Flew on the L-1011 a few times...once with Delta in 1987...SFO to ATL...flying with my director at the time and he got us first class upgrade....was a great flight...and some slight turbulence flying over convection....had an inflight movie and excellent meal service...when we landed in ATL, the hot humid air mixed with the cool air from SFO and created a nice vapor effect from all the overhead air vents...and the flight attendants assuring us over the PA everything was fine. Next...mid to late 90s...on TWA..always full flights...and I think the planes were starting to show their age....still comfortable and got us there on time. My company booked TWA for discounts...so lots of time transferring flights in STL....and flying to our headquarters in Orlando...which was using the L-1011 mostly. Had a business class upgrade...with room to stretch out. That and the DC-10 were the only wide bodies I had a chance to fly on....and the longest flight was a Northwest DC-10 to Honolulu...in coach..
Probably my all-time favorite aircraft. I flew on them domestically with Eastern and made a trip to Hawaii and several trips across the Atlantic with Delta. The cabin was spacious and comfortable and it was quiet. It was a great aircraft for those long-haul flights.
That British Airways livery is all that!👍🏾 My first widebody experience was on a Delta L1011 ..LAX2DFW.. in December '74. My second was on an Eastern L1011 ..LAX2ATL.. in June '76. My last two L10 rides were on TWA ..LAX2BOS.. 8n November '89. So I rode with the Big US 3. Had the opportunity to see the last one, the Stargazer, which still flies, on one of its departures from KONT where I even got street pics of it while in the hanger and a couple vid clips of it in motion to take off.
I bet it was excellent, they also had a fantastic livery on their L-1011s. I love their Golden Falcon logo. GF was the ultimate Gulf carrier, possibly the entire Middle East, before Emirates came out of nowhere and got their greedy little hands into everything, they’re very glitzy but cheap. Etihad is more like GF, smaller operation with an authentic quality product. I believe Oman Air isn’t too bad either. But GF with their beautiful L-1011s and exotic ‘veiled air hostesses' was the ultimate!
Such an amazing aircraft, with Air Canada as a Service Director (Retired), I operated both the L1011-100 and L1011-500 aircraft both domestically, trans-border & internationally to Europe, India & Singapore. I much preferred this aircraft over the B747. I can still hear the roar and sound of those RR RB211 Engines on startup.
I spent 20 years working on the L1011, first as a avionics mechanic and then as a maintenance controller with Delta Air Lines. Lots of overtime on these birds and loved it!
The L1011 remains my favorite airplane; it simply is the smoothest and quietest airliner. The takeoffs and landings were superb and the service was impeccable. I wish they'd bring it back!
I remember as a young boy flying on Eastern Airline's L-1011 from Freeport, Bahamas to Miami Florida and to Orlando. Very wonderful and vivis memories of this aircraft. Definitely best in class backnib those days.
I enjoyed flying in the TriStar a lot. Over the years I flew on Gulf Air, Cathay Pacific, AirLanka and Caledonian (whose livery I designed) - nice to see it again here!
@@joebidenofficialpotus Yes! It was just after BA bought British Caledonian Airways. They merged BCal’s mainline operations into their own, and re-branded their holiday charter airline, British Airtours, as Caledonian.
Air Lanka didn't look after their TriStars. They looked like they had seen better days when I flew in them mid-nineties. However, they were a very smooth ride!
This is the airplane that made me fall in love with aviation. It's a shame it's likely I'll never get to fly it as a pilot. However, I had the pleasure to fly it as a passenger 4 times on Delta, and can remember the big cabin windows and spacious passenger cabin.
Me too. What an awesome plane is was. I especially remember the "weeping" sound it would make was the engines were starting up. The great old days for sure.
I was a mechanic for 16 years at Lockheed....Palmdale. Worked on the L-1011, and enjoyed several flights to New England and the Hawaiian Islands. It was the most comfortable aircraft I've had the pleasure to experience.
It was a great plane. I first flew on the L-1011 July 11, 1979, I flew with Eastern Airlines from Buffalo to Atlanta. Flew on the L-1011 many times after. Great memories!!!!
My very first flight ever was on Air Canada's L-1011 between Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL) in 1977; and I was connecting to a Finnair DC-10 to Helsinki. I remember how thrilling that first flight was - as a kid I'd always been fascinated with planes and loved going to the airport to watch them take-off and land. I also remember many of the details like the smell of the fuel; the air conditioning condensation inside the cabin, and just how "big" it felt to me. A very happy memory, for sure.
I flew from Chicago to Dallas in the late 90's on an L1011. I was upgraded to business class for some reason, it was the quietest most comfortable flight I have ever had.
I flew in a Delta L-1011 from Atlanta direct to Honolulu and back, in about 1987 or so. It was fantastic: both high performance and quiet. I thought they'd be around forever, they were that good.
I flew on this bird multiple times from LAX to HNL as a child in the 90s. In fact, it was the first plane I ever took over the Pacific Ocean. I didn’t realize how legendary this plane was until recently.
I had never heard of this plane until today when I noticed something unusual in one of my fly tickets; the aircraft model had quite a long and distinct name 🤔.? I am very excited to know that I will have this rare opportunity in two weeks!
I flew on a short connecting hop from Atlanta to DC on an L-1011 It is my favorite airliner of all time. It was quiet, I was in the rear facing seats in the back with enough legroom for an NBA team and I loved it.
I flew on a Delta L-1011 to Salt Lake City, UT in 1990, and to Seattle, WA in 1996, each time from Atlanta, GA. Both trips were stupendous and fantastic! The flight attendants were very professional and courteous. There were no flight complications (air pockets, turbulence) either time. The flights were so smooth that I even took a nap.
I had flown an L-1011 in August 1986 with British Airways from BOM-Bahrain-LHR (90 minutes stop at Bahrain). It was indeed an amazing aircraft, that I distinctly remember...
My father was Captain on the L-1011 for Saudia. Always praises the cockpit and sometimes regrets being transitioned to the 747 from it, which he always says was a very big step backwards in technology. I remember going into the below deck galley as a kid. I regret not having the opportunity to ride in the jump-seat like i did with my father in the 747 flying around the world, although my older brothers did ride jump-seat in the TriStar many times.
As a kid growing up in the '70s, I flew by myself on Delta L-1011's from Detroit to my grandmother's in Tampa for a few summer visits. Being an unaccompanied minor, and it being the '70s, I remember being invited to come up into the cockpit on a night flight on an L-1011. It was the most glorious sight I'd ever seen. The amber glow of the vast instrumentation panels and the twinkling of city lights 6+ miles below was enough to blow my mind. I probably still have the pilots wings that they gave to me on that flight (obviously I did NOT fly the aircraft LOL). Truly a magnificent machine, and yes I remember how HUGE the cabin was - 2-5-2 configuration - pretty much a monster!. Interestingly, after having flown United and others as an adult, I will only fly Delta now. Not because of nostalgic reasons, but because the customer / passenger experience is tolerable and I've not been treated like baggage... Obviously, YMMV, and I hear commercial air travel is pretty terrible right now in the US...but that's another story.
Yes. I have flown on an L-1011 On my first aircraft ride ever. From DTW to MCO in 1980. Hardly anyone on the flight. Can't recall the airline. Wonderful experience.
The L-1011 (Eastern Airlines) was my very first flight at the age of 10. New York JFK to Orlando, Florida - Disney World. I’ve been in love with that plane since way back then... May 4, 1979. Never forget. My Dad worked at JFK so I got to go and see the behind the scenes. I became an airplane lover from that moment. I miss that aircraft.
I flew the L-1011 as F/0 for Eastern airlines in the 70s. Great airplane with generally good performance. Those RR engines had a habit of overtemping on takeoff in warm weather and we did a lot of warm weather flying.
Loved the L-1011. My Dad worked for Eastern so I had the opportunity to fly on the L-1011 often. I remember Eastern dubbed the L-1011 the "Whisperliner"
Thanks for doing this video. Yes, I flew on Delta and Eastern L-1011’s many times. Beautiful plane. I really enjoyed the experiences, both domestic and international.
Most comfortable airliner I ever flew on. I'm 61. Life long Alaskan. My Dad owned his own airplane. I grew up flying. Have flown all over the U.S. Peurto Rico to Hawaii. Alaska to Florida. Mexico and Belize. L-1011 was a great aircraft.
I’ve flown on a 747, DC10, and L 1011. I have to say that the L 1011 is the experience I cherish the most, I knew I was flying on a special plane. Too bad Lockheed doesn’t make commercial aircraft anymore, passengers around the world are missing out on a superior experience like the L 1011!
I have flown on Cathay Pacific L-1011 back in 1983 from HK Kaitak to Thailand as a child. Loved the startup rumble from the RB211s and the huge cabin area (though lacking in some overhead storage for centre passengers. Novel semi-circular bathroom arrangement in the back of which I hear airframe mechanics just “loved”. I am glad I got to ride on them during their heyday..I a: glad Air Canada flew them relatively late, though they tended to be one of the noisier aircraft flying out of YVR in the late 90s along with Canadian ancient DC-10s and the Fokker F28s.
Flew from Gatwick to Orlando on a Caladonian Tristar in the 90s, had to refuel in Bangor, Maine there and back. Was good to walk around the L1011 at Pima last year and to compare a walk around of the 787. A must go to place for all aviation enthusiasts.
Back in 1982 I flew from Montreal to Calgary on an Air Canada L-1011. It was the smoothest, quietest, most comfortable plane I've ever flown in. No modern jet even comes close. I had a window seat, and looking at the checkerboard pattern of the Canadian Prairies was quite a thrill. While I know it'll never happen I wish they would bring back the L-1011!
In 1995, my Bride and I flew to Honolulu on Rich International Airways, and it was my first and last flight on the TriStar. The aircraft was an older one, most likely a lease, but well maintained and extremely comfortable. The most lovely part of the aircraft: the engines. When those big Rolls Royce RB-211’s started to spool up, and the tail engine added its off-center “thwocking” until all three engines synchronized, this was the most thrilling sound I think I’ve ever heard. (Besides, perhaps, a well-tuned and well-voiced Steinway Model B piano)
our national airline of trinidad BWIA had a fleet of 1-1011's. flew on them a lot from toronto to trinidad. it was nice and spacious. there are a few still flying today.
I rode in this plane. I was impressed with the internal room. I also had a great experience through a storm with no bumps. I found out later it was a 1011. I wish more airlines carried it or used it as a model for further planes
I flew on an L-1011 with Delta from Stuttgart to Atlanta for my honeymoon. It was such a comfortable plane to fly on. I was also working for Delta at that time in Stuttgart. It was always cool watching the L-1011 from Delta and ATA (American Trans Air) because the L-1011 had its nose higher than all other planes when landing. Watching the L-1011 being retired really saddened me.
I loved this aircraft (as much as the 747) which I flew a lot in the 70's and 80's, particularly on the intra-continental routes. It felt very spacious, modern and quiet. I particularly remember being impressed by the cabin doors which electrically opened and disappeared by slipping into the ceiling structure in one quick motion. Very cool. The last ones I flew were on ATA from Oakland to Hawaii in the early 2000's. I only subsequently learned about all the sophisticated avionics it had. I must admit I avoided flying the DC-10 which always seemed to have one horrific crash after another every time I was about to travel.
Worked L-1011's with Delta, Eastern, and TWA liveries as an Air Traffic Controller. Probably the most beautiful aircraft of it's day. Lockheed seemed to always design great looking aircraft.
I took many a trip on this venerable jet. It's by far my favorite trijet and maybe favorite widebody as well... just a wonderful plane. I did two 30 hour stretches on them, I doubt I could have managed that on anything else and been as comfortable.
Unfortunately I never flew on a L-1011 but I remember her very well operating the daily Delta flight from Atlanta to my home airport Stuttgart (STR) in Germany. A really impressive airplane to watch and I was very sad to see one TWA L-1011 in the process of being scrapped in Kingman Az !
I was on one in 1976 between London and Paris. Can't say I remember much from the flight but the name "Tristar" was unusual enough that it stayed with me all these years.
I used to work on the aircraft and LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT! I wished they were still around today. If I had all the money in the world, I’d purchase one today and convert it in to my private jet.
The only time I got an opportunity to fly on this beauty was in the 90's on Saudia Airlines and the smoothness and comfort of the plane is unforgettable
I remember flying on a Delta L-1011 into South Florida during a tropical storm and the pilot made a point of announcing that because we were in an L-1011 they were going to allow us to land because the plane had an advanced landing system...It still was one of the scariest approaches/landings I've ever been on.
That's one way of boasting for sure on that pilot's part.
i guess it's kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released tv shows online ?
Love the L10 11
@radius97 He didn't say "Free"
Yep the landing was unique. Never had butter landing, too heavy.
I worked on the L1011 for over a year as a flight attendant and can honestly say it was a fantastic aircraft to work on
Loved the L -10 as we called it - however it always flew slightly nose up - making it harder to push fully loaded carts from aft to fwd. . .
One of the last truly great aircraft.
Flew on a L1011 once w/ TWA. I remember how big the cabin was. Still one of the best looking planes ever.
flew on it several times out of Albuquerque on TWA. A great air plane.
The L-1011 was the first wide body I ever flew on. I think I was 8 to 10 years old and it struck me with such awe compared to the MD-80s I had flown before. So big!
Same here. I loved it. Only have fond memories of its wide body and cool look.
I preferred the look over the dc-10, and flew on quite a few back in the day and loved it. Probably why I hate the 737’s.
@@davidcarroll8735 vice versa for me. Flew on a few DC-10 but never the L1011
Ditto! I started out flying on Delta's 1011's, and then Eastern's and TWA's. It was one of the most comfortable planes ever, and I'll always remember the "buzz saw" sound of those Rolls Royce engines at takeoff.
We need a reboot of this plane.
This bird is a beauty; sad that I never got the chance to see her.
Hey there is still one flying in the US😉
@@mattiagnagno757 And it's used to launch rockets into space!
@AviaCin you still can, what? one still flies, go see it!

I believe it's HAECO - Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company

It had roaring engines, reliable quality, safe and overall just a good looking plane.
Your profile picture is perfect!
It was an engineer’s plane, I’m told.
Flew on L1011's three times. Quiet and comfortable, the nicest aeroplane I've ever been fortunate enough to experience.
I envy your experience.

I flew in a Caledonian Tristar as a child and was in awe. Even after all these years it’s still one of the most elegant liveries ever.
Flew on one from Manchester to Orlando with ATA back in 1996. Still remember it now, great memories
I flew on the L-1011, in 1976 to Orlando, Eastern was the carrier, I do remember how quiet the plane was,and a spacious cabin.
YES, its finally Here!
To me El Ten-Eleven was the most beautiful passenger jet ever built
My first flight as a child was on the L1011. I just love it and feel kinda sad that it is not around any more.
I had the pleasure of flying the L1011 under both Eastern and Delta airlines and i enjoyed this aircraft!
I had never heard of this plane until today when I noticed something unusual in one of my fly tickets; the aircraft model had quite a long and distinct name 🤔.?
I am very excited to know that I will have this rare opportunity in two weeks!
Probably the highlight of my life in planes as a typical tourist was the flight I took in an l-1011. I'll never forget it.
Only flew the L-1011 once, a flight from LAX to HNL, it was an extremely comfortable flight and I loved that aircraft! N741DA with Delta in June 1995.
Flew on them a few times. San Diego to Honolulu and back. Great experience and great ride. Great aircraft.
Yes.
I have flown on an L-1011
On my first aircraft ride ever.
From DTW to MCO in 1980.
Hardly anyone on the flight.
Can't recall the airline.
Wonderful experience.
My family has over 60 years with Delta and I grew up flying the L1011 everywhere it to this day my all time favorite plane!
I worked on the Worldways L-1011 as a flight attendant. Loved that plane! It was one of two still flying that had a lower lounge.
I flew in an L1011 a few times in the 1980s. . . I loved it.
I can totally related. My Aunt worked for Eastern in the Bahamas so I flew frequently on the L-1011. What amazing time for air travel.
That was my second flight ever actually! Same airline, same trip. I might have been 4 or 5. How cool!
Amazing aircraft! I loved flying on it. It was luxurious and comfortable in all classes❤️
By far, the best flying experiene I've ever had was on a Tristar, I miss seeing them at DUB
Happy memories flying on the Gulf Air L1011 from Heathrow to Bahrain (and back)!
Would kill to see one of these available on MSFS
Tri-jets FTW!!
I always loved flying on the TriStar where I was always nervous on the DC-10.
Flew on Cathay Pacific Tristar in 1983 to HK. First wide body jet I travelled in so it was a great experience.
Love it! I was a Delta flight attendant and typically flew in the lower galley by myself as the most junior. Lol
The first plane I ever flew on was a Tristar! Worldways from Prestwick to Toronto in July 1989. Such a comfy plane!
I flew L-1011 several times< Eastern Delta and TWA . I love flying that model the best i ever flown.
I love the unique look of the Tristar and it is one of if not my favorite plane
I flew for Eastern from 1976 to 1989 based at SJU &MIA and I loved the L-1011 it was my A/C of choice as a F/A.
I logged many, many, many miles on the TriStar. I believe it remains the most remarkable and magnificent plane I've ever flown to date.
The only time I got an opportunity to fly on this beauty was in the 90's on Saudia Airlines and the smoothness and comfort of the plane is unforgettable
