Interesting facticle: The L-1011 had a system called Direct Lift Control, which meant the plane could change its descent rate whilst on the glide slope using only the spoilers, rather than changing pitch and thrust setting. It was supposed to make for a smoother approach although not usable if the wind was anything more than light.
Second facticle: The first aircraft in commercial service that had autoland capability was the Hawker Siddley Tristar.
Was a very enjoyable plane to fly on, I flew a couple of times on it across the Atlantic.

My grandpa used to work on L-1011s back in the day for TWA I sadly never had the chance to talk to him about it as he passed awhile ago however I’ve seen the pictures and they are pretty interesting airplanes

This is actually the first plane I remember flying to holidays as a child. With LTU from Düsseldorf to Punta Cana.

Interesting fact, in the 1970s the Soviets tried to buy a licence to produce the L-10-11 which might have helped save the project, but the deal was vetoed by the US government

I like how he said it wasn’t favorable. The L-1011 was too advanced for its time and maintenance heavy. It also lacked engine alternatives to the RB211. I agree, it’s sad that it wasn’t a successful plane. However, it did contribute a ton to modern aircraft.
it was also a financial failure because of the engine delays due to inital problems with the RB211

The L1011 is my favorite 70s plane, But it hurts that failure, It's impressive how an aircraft from that era could be so advanced, but being the direct competition of the DC 10 which was totally a success, I can't do anything. I think the L1011 is an underrated plane.
It was a victim of extremely poor management at Lockheed. Had they controlled the budget overruns and delivered it on schedule the DC10 never would have got the better of it.

If I remember correctly one of the things that set the L1011 behind the DC10 in sales was that Rolls Royce was in dire financial straits and fell behind schedule developing the engines. Since the whole tail concept was designed around the RB211, no off-the-shelf engine would fit, so Lockheed had no choice but to wait for the RB211 to be ready.
Eastern airlines used a lot of these. I got to fly on them as a kid in the 70s-80s. Beautiful

You were talking smack about Lockheed airliners, but you completely omitted the Lockheed L-749 Constellation and L-1049 Super Constellation. Those two planes were also airliners, and they were really good, so good in fact, that one was modified to be an airborne command post before the “doomsday plane”
Also, being objectively some of the most beautiful aircraft in history.
