    Julie is what happens when a really beautiful person is also very down to earth and okay with exposing who they are as a human to the rest of the world. None of that is easy. Julie is one of my all-time favourite (yeah, we Canadians spell it with a 'u') TH-camrs. She deserves all the successes.

      Yes, favoUrite. She adds coloUr to my day when I put aside the daily laboUr to watch one of her videos. She is honoUrable and has pursued this endeavoUr with great dedication.

      We’ve heard Real Julie answer interview questions before- this isn’t similar to how Julie sounds unscripted. I really feel that even if it’s an authentic Ted Talk, it’s not authentic Julie but Julie doing a script. Like Albert said, this is EXACTLY how a ‘perfect’ presenter sounds, mannerisms, etc. None of it is like the interviews on her channel when she’s just being herself. And yes, I think it was all intentional because she truly is the greatest actress of this generation.

    I was told not to study English or to be devoted to literature when I was in school.
    So, I focused on math and science...and I was miserable and failing everything.
    One day, a friend of the family noticed my situation, and he asked me the one question I needed to hear, 'Do you like it?'
    I tried to dance around this, and finally he stopped me and said, 'If you are kind to life, life will be kind to you.'
    It took a while, but I switched majors...and ended up teaching overseas, getting my work published, and still submitting material to pages online while teaching at a major college in my hometown.
    Thank you, Julie! Good to see you give this kind of TED Talk to those who still need to hear it.

    When I first started writing fiction in my mid 20s, someone told me, "Perseverance will get you a lot further than talent." Julie, you have both, thankfully, and your story inspires. (Oh, by the way, I wrote five novels in 14 years, and received 150+ rejections, before making a sale with my sixth manuscript. Went on to have six books published over the next nine years. Overnight "sensation," indeed. (Though I never made much money from the books, I achieved a true lifelong goal in becoming good enough as a writer to be published by a "real" publisher.) Keep on keeping on, Julie. Love your work.

Love, love being an engineer! For me it was worth it. Sorry to lose a fellow engineer but so glad you found what makes you happy. I started following Julie's channel back when she made content for Tastemade. When Tastemade went behind a paywall I stopped following them but subscribed to Julie's channel directly. I remember seeing the number of views (sometimes fewer than 10,000) and thinking that it didn't align at all with the quality and consistency of her content.
    I don't fully agree with her assessment that success is "inevitable" for anyone following the formula, but in her case it really did seem like a matter of time until something of hers went viral enough to help people discover her content. So happy for her! Her success is well earned and she's far from done.

      Yes you can work for ever and maybe make it big, but if you quit you are guaranteed to fail. “We’ll be singing, when we’re winning, I get knocked down, but I get up again, ‘cause they’re never gonna keep me down.”

    • @bipedalbob
      @bipedalbob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's always those that succeeded that will stress the importance of never giving up, persistence is the key, Yadda yadda yadda.
      Yup sure it is, if you succeed. Quitters never win, yup sure, but it's not true that if you never quit you will win, or suceed.
      It certainly would seem like it to those that do, and it's true, if you succeed.
      There is not a doubt in my mind for every Julie there is a least a hundred that tried just as hard, even harder, have persisted for longer than Julie has even been alive, have not given up and
      Still have not succeeded.
      Will never succeed.
      It's fate and circumstance.
      Julie is an incredible talented no doubt about it.
      I discovered Julie during covid, had a lot more time to fill, as have millions of other's.
      It's just as likely that had we never had covid we would never have known Julie.

    • @Twizzybeatzz
      @Twizzybeatzz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A very pessimistic view.
      Success is different for everyone, and I think it takes time working at what you want before you can adjust your expectations of what your success is going to be.
      Not everyone is going to go viral, though that’s what many might want. Sometimes what people call failure isn’t based on their ability to perform their task, but projecting someone else’s successes into their story.
      I know some TH-camrs who post great content to a very meager fan base and that’s all they need because they make videos for a different reason.
      My friend streams on twitch not to become famous, but just because he’s having a good time.
      Point is, there really aren’t people designed to fail if they provide the effort. Sometimes the effort just manifests in different ways.

    That speech is so inspiring! I've discovered Julie Nolke through a collab she did with Ryan George and watched every single video on her channel. You can see how much effort she put in all videos and how talented she is as an actress. Also, I love her humour and her way of acting out characters. Escpescially her "explaining the pandemic to my past self"-series got me through the pandemic and gave me a safe space to laugh and cry about the mad world we are living in. I think the first video of that series was the one that went viral.
    I've wanted to be an actress when I was a child and I loved acting in school plays, but writing is my one true calling. I know there's not much money to make in writing poetry, but I've kept on and self-published my first book, an anthology of my poms, last month. My goal is to make a living out of creative writing and work independently on my own terms. If that means that I will write social media posts and copywrite for websites in a start-up and get a bachelor in media design to pay for my bills, so be it. I will keep writing, actually I'm already writing my second book, a fantasy ya novel.
    I will get there eventually. I don't want fame, I just want a piece of the cake, however tiny it might be, it will satisfy me.

    Thank you for this. Having struggled for many years (and continuing to ) as an indie no-name actor, the bucket of inspiration and determination and fortitude sometimes gets knocked over. It can be difficult to find out how to fill it again. Your words help me feel that desire to take yet another step, get back on the horse, keep fighting the fight. I appreciate you and your brilliance (a marvelous word with many facets) more than I can say. Here's to your continued success!

    I'm a little late to the party, but I truly love seeing her videos and all they encompass. Yes, Mirror Julie is a great foil and actually offers some solid advice ("he's not into you, maybe Teriyaki is not his thing"). She is so open and honest with herself and all the weirdness that we all think and overthink from time to time.

Julie, you are very gifted and Mirror Julie is a stroke of genius (and delivers some really great insights for all of us). That was very inspiring. I love that the focus is about the process of the work put in - particularly for that length of time, because that can be so hard and so tempting on giving up. On social media, we more than often see the end result of what someone has achieved and want that for ourselves, and it's easy to think it can happen quickly and the hard work can often be taken for granted. Thanks Julie for highlighting the value in the belief and the process.

    As a person who found Julie through the covid video, i am still a fan and was surprised i hadn’t found her sooner. I hear that a lot of TH-camrs find success after like 4-5 years of hard work. The ‘overnight’ success is just that one video that takes off and overnight you go from being small to being huge. But the path is a LONG one that takes years. Great video Julie! Also i can totally see that part of Julie’s online persona is just her.

    Some people are made “stars” by studio hype, and some people build their success from the ground up. Julie is funny, witty, and a very hard worker. I met a lot of obstacles in my career and got beyond them by the same strategies she used: lots of irons in the fire, lots of volunteer or low paid positions, and the jobs that others would not take, that got me experience and exposure, and finally pivoting away from my “dream” job after nine years of dead ends to pursue a different path that led to greater job satisfaction and success than would have ever been possible on my original intended path. This video is gold.

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
    I have enjoyed your videos for over a year.
    Today i wached this TEDx TALK. (Not my favorite way to waste time on TH-cam, not when there is 'anything else' to watch on TH-cam.) I watched you, becuase i really enjoy your videos. The Mirror Mirror stuff is classic.
    I will share here that i have owned a nice airplane for about 7 or 8 years now. But, talk about having to keep your head down, and trusting the process... wow I have yet to be brave or confident enough, to fly from here to far, far away. Sure, i fly around the airport, so close you could rush right back and land if I were to panic. I just keep pushing, and pushing, and it can be very disapointing to not be at the end goal. Your talk today really reminds me to just stay with it.
    MY GOAL: To be a safe and capable pilot of my airplane. To be able to take myself, and my wife traveling around Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
    best regards,

    So great to see Julie lay out her strategy. As someone who discovered her along the the millions when she was "Explaining the pandemic to her past self" I think the only thing ahee left out of this talk was the sharp and brilliant comedy she developed in her writing. That bucket of crazy stories is hilarious. I hope as well as starring in films she goes on to keep creating those expressive girl characters that are really speaking for so many of us.

    This was exactly what I needed to hear right now! My big dream is to one day be a famous author and make my comics into a successful animated cartoon! My short term goal right now is to launch my queer murder mystery business. I’d been feeling disheartened the past couple of weeks, paying for advertising and doing lots of plugging and having some interest shown, but not getting a single ticket sale for either of my events that I put up so far, but this is a good reminder of why it’s important to just keep trying! I’m only 25, I have nothing but time. I can wait as long as it takes. I just have to keep working and never stop! Thank you, Julie! I’ve been a fan of your content seeing your first video, and this just made me a bigger fan of you as a human.

It's really pretty difficult to get me to literally laugh out loud, but Julie has brought me to tears many a time. And, for someone who has really bad depression and anxiety; that's better than any antidepressant I can take. She's definitely a star whether she wants to admit it or not.

    I love that you talked about "the formula". I've said this about most disciplines that the talent combined with the work creates the success. That success may look like "toiling", but 90% of the people who work "toil" away at their craft for years and then just retire. But sometimes that success can go viral. But if the talent and work aren't there, then virality is just luck and that luck fades into the ether. I SO appreciate hearing that said out loud.

    I think this is what most people don't realize what is behind most successful TH-cam and other content creators. Maybe not the formal training but the passion and perseverance. Yes a lot of them have that one moment where there career takes off, but there was a lot of heart ache and failure before that.
    Kudos to Julie for sharing the struggle part of getting to where she is now she deserves all of it. Her content is fantastic and hilarious!!

    Julie: You are a genius writer, and actor.
    I notice that the natural authentic you is not either of the characters you so brilliantly create and portray.

    I love Julie and her work- I’m subscribed to her channel and look forward to every post. She’s freaking hilarious and an unquestionably talented writer/actor. That said, I feel I need to address the big asterisk elephant in the room. We’re watching a (subjectively) gorgeous young cis white woman from a first world country talk about achieving success in her craft- including quitting other lucrative positions and career paths to which she had access. Taking absolutely nothing away from her, in the TedX sphere, we should be conscious of the relative nature of the advantages-vs-obstacles she brings to the conversation. Just throwing that out there for perspective, knowing I might receive backlash even though I mean no disrespect or disparagement. Peace be unto each and all of you who read my ramblings.

    • @charlessaintpe8574
      @charlessaintpe8574 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, she was REALLY underselling the role that luck plays in success, but I think her point about being consciously and unabashedly aware of your goals is really important and could profoundly impact a lot of people.

    • @tytnight03
      @tytnight03 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Saying success is guaranteed if you follow these steps without the mention of luck or things out of her control (race, beauty, country of origin, etc.) is a very privileged thing to say. I think she's talented as well and it's nice to follow goals and stick with them, but there are plenty of people that have taken these exact steps to no avail, for reasons completely out of their own control. To lose sight of this point or not to even acknowledge it undermines this story and what a TEDx talk has always represented.
