Good. Glad to see you calling out Samsung on their QC bullcrap. Black screens were a constant issue on my previous Samsung and oh my god do I hate the damn smart menu. I wish Samsung would just disable it.
I think black screens are just a problem with nvidia GPUs and DSC.

I have this monitor, I use it 8h+ a day work and some gaming. I had a similar issue with the black screen, but mine was related with cable. I had to buy a better quality high-speed HDMI or display port cable. Since then, I have had no issue. Yes, the OS is atrocious, I wish there was a way to disable it, it's very fking slow when switching devices or even going to the menu. Yes, it gets hot but like I said I use it for over 8h including work and games, and over heat hasn't been an issue. One issue I have, that maybe ypu haven't notice or maybe it is just mine, but the picture image shifts positions meaning the whole screen image is not centered, at times is moved to the left or the right, some times is very noticeable as the gape in one side is very big that you could tell.
I buy samsung products and had only one Issue once for one of my samsung phones but a different person solved the issue.

I recently purchased the MSI MPG 341CQPX QD-OLED. I had contemplated purchasing the Samsung G8 but had heard negative things about support and build quality of Samsung monitors. Samsung OLED screens are terrific, wish Samsung would delivery a more complete experience with their own brand monitors.

Did you use DSC and G-Sync in combination with the monitor? If so, there is a big chance that your black-screen issues came from that. I had the same with 4k 160Hz and also blamed the monitor, in the end I found out that it is a DSC and G-Sync combnination issue for years with some graphics cards and Nvidia seems to not care about solving it. Since then I switched back to 1440p and did not have any problems since.

  • @ItzTheDay

As for your "overheating" theory, a black screen is not the results of it over heating. The back panel is part of the cooling, think of your phone how the back of it will heat up. It dissipates the heat and if it's warm, it's doing it's job. IF the monitor overheats, it results in a shutdown. Next time you think it's overheating, just hit the info button on your remote and the OSD will still pop up. For the black screening, this is very common and it's all over Samsung's forums in both US and EU and this is the biggest issue I'm having with this monitor. Sometimes it will only go black for two seconds, sometimes the image won't come back at all. I sometimes also get the Windows device disconnect and reconnect tone when this happens. If the image doesn't come back, I either have to unplug and plug back in the DisplayPort cable or go into game bar and change to 16:9 then back to 32:9. My other issue is I cannot view my BIOS, and my motherboards splash screen on start up doesn't display either. I found out that the EDID does not support most BIOS resolutions, which is why it won't display. The workaround is to enable PBP, which is an inconvenience and not acceptable for a "gaming monitor".

This is the review I was looking for. I can read the specs on Samsung website, but the information about what goes wrong with it and what it feels to own (and service) it is what's a deciding factor for me. I know that G9 has all bells and whistles, but is the monitor actually working properly or am I gambling a lot of money to see whether I'm getting a good or bad unit.

from what I've read, the other Gen 3 QD OLED Samsung monitors (G6 and G8) tend to heat up quite a bit as well - apparently, it's the result of its heat pipes dissipating heat away from the panel itself and towards the back.

Thanks for the video. I have this and an LG 32GR93 (upon your recommendation). Got the IPS cos I didn’t want my G95 OLED on for 12 hours per day. I’ve experienced none of the issues and appreciate the OS cos I can tweak display settings more than with any other monitor. I am still super surprised that many people are using DP 1.4 with this as PC gamers think DP is the best option. For this monitor, HDMI 2.1!

These OS issues you are describing pretty much resonate with what I'm seeing right now on my Odyssey OLED G8. Switching connected PCs (HDMI, DVI) isn't detected reliably. Even if I pull the HDMI cable and there's nothing connected to port, the OS still believes only HDMI is connected. Although the other machine on the DVI is up.

I agree with the OS, I have the G85SB 34" - that resolution change is legitimately the worst, I can't use the USB C for my secondary laptop as a result, tried everything. That OS is disgusting and I hate switching the monitor on everyday. Gorgeous display once you look pass the OS - I'd consider the Corsair for future

I do not agree with not recommending this monitor. I have it for months, transitioning from an LG C2. Once you try OLED, we can never go back. With the G9, I lost some pixels per inch and vertical real estate, but it is awesome for gaming and office work. It is not perfect and many of your complaints are correct, but all in all I do not know what can give me a better working and gaming solution in one.

My experience with G93SC was so far flawless.
Black screen - effects both G93SC amd G95SC, BUT if you roll back G93SC to 1.5.2 or lower - there will be no issue. (Mine came with that firmware)
I didn't encounter overheating with G93SC, but to be fair my room never got over 35c, so maybe if you live in hotter place's it will be a problem.
About OS non smartTV G93SC doesn't have problems mentioned, I can easily change resolution refresh rate. Unfortunately some genius in Samsung though that smartTV is good idea - but at least we have a choice.

95sd is the 3rd gen, the SC is the original older oled 32:9 g9 of theirs, with 2nd gen qdoled panel, yours.
The unfortunate thing is that only samsung got smart 32:9 qd oled monitor, there are only few options left outside of them but those have less Hz also, or smaller aspect ratios...
I wish for 57" 32:9 qd oled one, or even 48:9, no joke.

Absolutely would NOT recommend this monitor. I bought one on pre-order and regretted it ever since! This monitor can not cope with 240Hz and adaptive sync. I had to change my display settings in Nvidia control panel to 120Hz to stop the monitor from randomly going 'black screen'! Not great when you're in the middle of a battle in World of Warcraft Hardcore. Lost many characters that way. Kudos to you for calling out Samsung and the paid shills who raved about this monitor.

Do not forget these monitors do not play well with AMD gpus (HDR brightness performance). The phillips 240hz monitor seems to be having issues as well so a 144hz pannel might be the way to go (maybe overheating is the reason for the hz limit).

Intresting i have an asus pg32ucdm , using a qd-oled panel from samsung and it also suffers from random black screens using both dp and hdmi that was included with the monitor , i checked the forums and reddit and discovered many many users have this exact same issue, it doesnt happen too often but its frustrating when it happens as sometimes the solution is to fully restart the pc. I have 2 monitors connected and my other older monitor doesnt go black when ny oled does meaning this only happens to my oled monitor my other ips monitor isnt affected. Sadly new oled tech is still not fully there when it comes to the perfect experience, when it works its gorgeous but be prepared to face bugs and hitches with ur experience. I have been using ips monitors for the last 10 years and i never had issues like this.
Im still hopeful that some these issues like the random black screens can be mitigated with future firmware updates.
Thank you for your video as sadly most these monitors only have short positive reviews without anyone actually mentioning the issues they face like the random black screens and the vrr flicker.

The black screens are because of HDR and Gsync. Once I ran it in SDR and no Gsync I stopped having black screen of death problems. Yes, I did experience having to turn everything off and on to get back control lol. Very aggravating. Arguably this is a Windows 11 HDR problem (W11 is better then W10 at HDR, but it still needs improvement). I have similar problems, but not as severe, when I hook up my pc to my Sony 295ES projector. To minimize issues, I run that in SDR as well. Similarly, OLED text fringing is a windows cleartype problem not an OLED problem.
On the topic of overheating, middle bottom right is where I felt a little bit of warmth, but it was never hot. So as far as overheating, I think you got a bad monitor. Mine performed flawlessly for the three weeks I had it.
I believe there's a version of the G9 OLED that doesn't have the Tizen software; it's the cheaper version. I don't believe BB sells that version, and Samsung's warranty reputation is terrible, which is why I buy everything at BB and use their everything warranty. And I used the remote every day to switch modes based on what I was doing, which wasn't too bad once I had set all the presets. There's a press and hold function on the remote which takes you to a handy quick settings menu.
I ran the 57VA and 49OLED side by side, and it was an incredibly difficult decision. Several observations. The Gloss screen wasn't distracting at all. There's an annoying channel dedicated to monitors, and that guy hates matte screens, and I've got to say he's right. Gloss is far superior. The 1440p OLED is noticeably sharper than the older G9 1440p VA matte screen pixel for pixel.
The blacks on the 57VA and the G9 OLED are the same. They both get super black. However, the 57VA loses all detail in darker areas of the screen, this is called black crush. On cyberpunk, just looking into a shadowy area, you can see all the detail with OLED, but not VA, it's just dark. And then there's the FALD blooming which is only a big deal on say night missions from Ghost Recon 2001, but when it was so bad that it was unplayable without using the Black Equalizer setting to turn blacks into greys. On darker games in general, such as Max Payne 1, the Oled was far, far better.
Most important standout feature of OLED gaming versus VA gaming is the pixel response time. The motion clarity on the OLED was so good it felt like cheating. And I'm sure this is true for all OLEDS. I never realized how much VA panels smear until I used an OLED, and it's that smearing that makes it harder to track targets in FPS. I went CRT, TN to VA, and 240hz OLED is totally kinetic. 240hz VA to 240hz OLED felt the jump from 60hz to 120hz. It is a huge upgrade.
Color was better on the OLED, but not night and day. Color on the 57VA was noticeably better than the older G9 I've been using, so Samsung has improved their VA technology over the last few years. The VA57 is as bright as people say. The 49OLED's brightness is acceptable, but it is on the dim side. I had to run it at 75% brightness, wheras I have run most monitors at 50% brightness since 2002.
The stand on the OLED is far superior to the stand on the 57VA. The OLED49 monitor stand is the best monitor stand I've ever had.
The 4k resolution of the VA57 is noticeably sharper than the OLED. At 4k, aliasing doesn't really show, wheras in 1440p it's there. The size and curve of the VA57 is more imersive than the 49OLED as well; the size of the 57 is on another level from my older 1000R VA49. It is not a small upgrade. However, the huge size does cramp my space. It does block my speakers somewhat which reduces sound quality for me, and I do bump into the 57 just trying to move around my office because it's wider than my desk.
And then there's the OLED burn-in anxiety, which was always present in my mind, and changed the way I used my computer. I ran a black screen with no icons and disappearing windows taskbar. Which was fine. But I use my computer for browsing as well as work, and I often run four windows using Powertoys. And I was concerned about burning in the center of screen over time as that is where I run windows side by side, and where videos play.
Text fringing exists. It's noticeable. It can be minimized by changing the scaling windows. Not a deal breaker for me. But subpixel structure of VA panels is more suited to Windows cleartype.
OLED pixels will last longer than VA pixels, but I fear the power supply will go out long before the pixels give out. Will the OLED last ten plus years like a lot of LED monitors? Probably not. A buddy of mine has an early LED monitor from 2004 that's still going. I doubt any of these OLEDs will still be useable 20 years from now because burn in may become so bad as to make it unusable. I saw the OLED as a three year monitor, which means it would cost around dollar a day to own. It's also Samsung's first attempt at an ultrawide OLED, so reliablity should only increase from here. It's also a Gen2 panel, and Samsung claims that their GEN3 panels are brighter and not as susceptible to burn in, but I've heard that the GEN3 OLED 49 will use a slightly matte finish which is disappointing.
And of course the 49OLED is easier to drive and therefore cheaper to own. Currently only the 7900XTX is truly suitable for the 57VA; even the 4090 can't run it as 240hz. The OLED49 is also hundreds of dollars cheaper out the gate.
To conclude the consensus on Reddit is generally correct that the 57VA is better for a mix of office work and gaming, and the OLED is better for pure gaming.
And I've written all of this because I miss the OLED every day. At times I feel like I made the wrong decision. But I used the monitors side by side for three weeks I found myself gravitating toward the larger 4k screen. But I sometimes feel that I should have kept that finicky monitor because the dark detail and motion handling was so good. I scored the three monitors, my old 49VA, 57VA and 49OLED. I made a chart to help myself make the decision and the old 49VA scored 26, 57VA scored 32, and the 49OLED scored 31. So close. And even now, I'm seriously considering returning the 57VA. The 49OLED was just that good for FPS.
As many people have said in the forums, a 4k57 OLED would be a must buy.
