  • Wanted to do a deeper dive on the G9 OLED after owning it for a few months and just go over some of the settings, fixes for problems I've encountered, and my overall thoughts now that I've had quite a bit of hands on time with it.
    Also, lemme know how you like this "no frills" style of video, it's something I want to start doing after the 4-6 month mark with larger products to give a more in depth review and just yap about my time with the product.

    I actually caved and brought the G9 QD-OLED on Amazon (while it was on a great sale!) almost 2 weeks now! It came very next day and setup was kinda straight forward. I’m really loving the monitor thus far. While my monitor updated itself (😩 Samsung always removing features) I don’t believe I can adjust peak brightness for SDR (least while an image is onscreen) on FW 1310. I have since turned auto update off. Overall, I absolutely love the 32:9 aspect ratio. While I initially wanted the 45 Corsair Xeneon Flex model, for the price I got the Samsung and the overall (potentially) better 2nd gen QD display, I’m certainly not losing any sleep over not having the prior. I know I wasn’t paying $1900 for ANY monitor, regardless how nice of PQ quality. For the price and the absolute gorgeous display of the Samsung, it simply can’t be beat.

    Love the video can't wait to try out the settings you gave! Just got it last week, never had an OLED before, and I have been searching and searching for answer to this but, what can be done about the heat it outputs, mine usually sits around 95-105, with a peak of 110F on a hot spot, can not seem to find a solution for this, or if this is just normal/okay

      I've never checked the temp from mine so not sure what's considered normal but I do notice it gives off quite a bit of heat in the back. Just to be safe I would reach out to Samsung to make sure that's not out of the norm, but as long as it has enough room to breathe I would say its okay

    I applied your recommendations here on my new Samsung G9 OLED S49CG932SN, which for some reason does not come with a remote and has a different UI, setting names yet seems to have the same specs as the one here. Like for instance, it only has three levels of color scales to change on RGB instead of the 6 you have here.
    With the settings here applied (except I kept color settings at 0,0,0) with HDR on and Auto HDR off. I don’t understand why we would want that off? With that off, each time I open a game now, instead of automatically applying HDR to the game, I get a pop up informing me that HDR is available but Off and it would benefit having it on. 😅

    • @chettystudios
      @chettystudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There's 2 models of the G9 OLED, one with the "smart" features and interface and one without. I believe the one you have is without, which is why there's no remote/settings are a bit different but the panel itself should be the same.
      For the Auto HDR I had mine off because it's purpose is to take SDR content and apply a new tone map to give it an HDR look, and although it does a good job most of the time, for the sake of keeping things standard while setting things up I didn't want it to apply any "effects" on top of the image. You can definitely mess around with this once the monitor is set up as it may make some SDR content look better, just keep in mind that Windows is applying a new tone map, on top of the tone map you've already set on the monitor, so if things do start to look oversaturated or highlights blown out that's the reason.
      The most common complaints I've seen is that it makes certain programs/software while not gaming look blown out and oversaturated and the common fix for this is setting up a hotkey to turn it on/off when using it for gaming/not gaming.

      @nickclark3861 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In my opinion this one because oled just looks so damn good. But your clearly want to spend money on this setup so Samsungs newest neo is this but in 4k, it’s 7680x2160 so 2 4k monitors beside each other, it’s around $3k I believe but if you really want resolution it’s great. I still personally recommend this one though there’s really nothing that comes close to oled in terms of quality.

    • @chettystudios
      @chettystudios  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I second that I would definitely stick with OLED. If 4k is what you’re looking for there’s also quite a few coming out/already released this year in the 32” variant if you’re not already 100% set on UW that are worth taking a look at as well

    • @rustyshackleford4117
      @rustyshackleford4117 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you can afford both, for the 4090 I'd recommend 65" or 77" 16:9 4K OLED that can do 120hz, for big screen/couch gaming. And for gaming with a mouse/keyboard at a desk, go with this G9 as you can't beat the 240Hz and superultrawide 5120x1440 32:9 resolution. Personally for gaming, I do prefer the extra width especially for FPS and strategy games, however for more cinematic games or 3rd person games, I like the big TV and additional vertical resolution. The pixel density from 1440p vs 4k is noticeable, however it's not a huge deal even sitting close to the monitor, it's a much wider gap from 1080p to 1440p. 4k does offer that bit of extra clarity, especially on a small monitor to where anti-aliasing type in games doesn't really matter anymore, but the extra width is a lot more immersive as the screen fills your whole field of view which does kinda suck you into the game when sitting close in a way a TV can't.
      If you really wanna hold out for a true 4K 32:9 OLED monitor, rumors are that next year Samsung will release an OLED with that ungodly double 4k resolution of 7680x2160, as they currently have a 57" monitor with that res but it's still a QLED/MicroLED type of tech. That said, that's probably about 9 months to a year out from now, but in either case that res would even bring a 4090 to it's knees, as it would be half the FPS of 4K.... The 5090 should be out by then though and may be a perfect match.

    Great video, man. I want to update my old one to the new OLED G9, but seeing all these issues that you had, I think I will wait for the next-gen because someone said maybe all these problems are caused by the DSC, display stream compression, I hope the next-gen OLED G9 could have the DP2.0 so no more DSC may cause fewer problems. I want to use G9 OLED most of the time for text editing, is that a good choice? Because someone said the ABL can be very unpleasant to eyes

    • @chettystudios
      @chettystudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The ABL doesn't bother me as much as the text fringing would for something like text editing. Its still not a HUGE issue but I can imagine it causing some eye strain if I was looking at text all day. Typically WOLED panels deal with this better so I would look for something that uses that!

      Zero issues here on G9 OLED, and I've had mine since day 1 on launch so it's been almost 10 months. It works fine on HDMI 2.1 with a good cable, the displayport cable isn't ideal though as you can't easily hit as high of a refresh rate. HDMI 2.1 cable works fine. I've had no issues with HDR or G-Sync/VRR on this monitor, it simply just works. Which is interesting, as the 49" first gen G9 I had with the VA panel was basically impossible to get HDR working on, but HDR is worthless anyway on anything other than OLED or maybe really high-end QLEDs.
      That said, my biggest complaint is the TV interface, it's laggy garbage. If you do decide to the get the OLED, definitely go with the cheaper one that lacks smart TV features. Will save you $200 and plenty of headache from the shitty slow interface.

    Hi, I recently purchased this monitor, and your videos have been very helpful. However, the screen was glitching, and the monitor’s OS indicated a port issue. Samsung’s customer service was unable to diagnose the problem. Following your suggestion, I tried using HDMI 2.1 cables, which so far seem to have resolved the issues.
    But I have two questions for you before I decide whether to return the monitor:
    1. Since getting the monitor, it has been making a popping noise while in use. Did yours do that?
    2. When I first received my monitor, every time I powered it on, the screen would display “Samsung Odyssey OLED”. Now, it only shows the shutting down animation when I turn it on. Is this normal behavior after a while, or is my unit faulty?

      @chettystudios  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad the cable helped! I forgot to mention I too had the port issue indication when running the troubleshooter in the OS at first.
      For the popping, this isn’t something I’ve experienced but I would definitely email Samsung about it to make sure it’s just the speakers turning on and not something more serious like a faulty power supply or something that could catch fire over time.
      And as for the power on, this is normal, I don’t see any text on screen when powering it on, just the horizontal “shutter” effect if the PC is already turned on and a blue screen if the PC is just being turning on and waking the monitor from rest until I get Windows Login Screen

      From what I’ve read there is a “motion clarity” setting that will activate BFI, but you have to jump through some hoops to get it to work such as 1. Switch to AV mode 2. Set to Use 120hz or lower

      Not a problem for every model, some people don't have any issues but myself and a friend of mine both have had issues using DP.
      One thing I've seen suggested is using a DP to HDMI converter, the only issue with this is I'm not sure if you'll loose any quality or if theres even a converter that will support DP 1.4 > HDMI 2.1.
      I currently have a C3 also and I just swap the cables and only use one at a time but been looking for a solution I'll definitely be making a post if I find a solid one

      Yeah I mean people have said they use it via Display Port but everybody I know personally that owns it has issues. • @Helifax19
    @Helifax19 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Turning off VRR (and G-Sync) is the worst idea you can possibly give. You are transforming your monitor from a Variable Refresh Rate one into a Static Refresh Rate one which introduces latency and "choppiness" as you describe. Strange I had zero issues with the DP 1.4 cable that came in the box with the monitor.
    Pretty good info, besides this :)

    • @chettystudios
      @chettystudios  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks! And for VRR on vs off it’s a pick-your-poison case scenario.
      Because of the fast response time of OLED, VRR can’t keep up with it, and you’ll introduce “flickering” where the screen looks like every once in a while it gets brighter. With VRR off you no longer have this but you may experience screen tearing or “choppiness” like you mentioned.
      I very rarely, if ever, experience screen tearing so I just keep g sync turned off to avoid the OLED VRR flicker, but it really depends on which one bothers you more
