    If I build a engine for your Harley, whether it's a performance cross country bagger, or a turbo Dyna, it WILL get one of those filters. There's no discussing this. Great job guys.

      I relocated for ease of service. You will not see 8hp or 10 ft lb from an oil filter change. I change my oil more than regularly, so I’m ok with not getting the same filtering capability of a quality paper/syn material filter. Many test show they flow better, at the expense of micron size removal.

    I run a thicker oil for summer months over 70 degrees, I like to run straight 60 in theses temps. come fall I go back to a thinner oil. This would work great for me. 2 oil changes per year regardless of miles. When it comes to oil everyone has an opinion, mine is that 20-50 is too thin for air cooled engine in hot temps for any style of riding. I ride 2 up on a 2013 tri glide pulling a trailer with gear. 70 MPH AND ABOVE LOADED WITH GEAR MAKES FOR A LOT OF HEAT BUILD UP. Riders wait for miles to change oil. I enjoy my 103 and want it to last, so oil change 2 times a year for me. You guys do a fantastic job of passing on important tips to keep these air-cooled engines running. Thanks

    Hey guys, Love your vidoes. I bought one of these filters to get it in my hands and do my own unprofessional inspection and the only the that bothers me is that there is no anti-drainback valve. Just wonder about any top end nosie when starting up cold because the oil not being held in that part of the engine. What's your findings about the absence of the anti-drainback valve.

      The 2012 Twin Cam has the stock oil pump, cams, etc.
      We have found that TC's respond better to some mods (like this filter) than M8's. And, conversely, M8's respond better to some mods (like a cam) than the TC's.

    Efficiency is the single most important aspect of filter and engine longevity. I have allot of experience with filtration. Things that impact is media type . The absolute micron rating and over all efficiency. Single pass efficiency is critical. Micron = red blood cell is 8 micron , diameter of a human hair is roughly 70 micron. Oil pump Hp draw is simple formula GPM x Pressure / 1714 (overall efficiency) . Give me filtration over fractional Hp every single time. Stainless is a rock catcher not a filter. Sorry not trying to be jerk but I have done allot of training in filters and application.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment.
      You do not address bypass. We're talking about Harley-Davidsons, not oil filter function on any other engine.
      How much filtration is happening during bypass, and how often does the bypass open on a typical Harley (Sporty Evo, TC & M8)?

    • @michaelrocole7174
      @michaelrocole7174 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That’s a good reasonable question the correct oil in the correct temperature range addresses bypass. Yes they may by pass but it’s a matter of “scrubbing” the oil and the size and number of particles makes the difference. Oil swamp,es for example are snap shot of the condition of the oil taken from that particular spot at that time. One must be very careful not contaminate the same,e with debris at the collection point and airborne particles. So oil samples are essentially not so accurate. With our discussion let’s talk about how we could quantify your and my differences. One would need to put a particle counter (analyzer) it would take continuous analyzing the oil for number and size of the particulate matter before and after the filter. This would give you truly accurate assessment of both styles of filters. This is more of movie of the oils contamination levels not snapshot like a sample. But even with some bypass which nobody seems to really know how dynamic the conditions are to put it into by pass the oil coming into it with constant scrubbing to 20 micron absolute may still win the battle against a filter that is 30 micron nominal. So although we don’t agree some more sophisticated testing as I described would tell which filter is the winner. I made a living with filtration in hydraulic systems so I am not completely ignorant and maintain that unless someone can unequivocally tell how often the bypass is open and what the resultant contamination level part per million and size in microns of those particles this is all opinion. That’s ok I like your products and innovation just not convinced on this cleanable reusable oil filter. Thanks for responding.

    I’ve run thousands of dynos.. mostly all Harleys. Never ran did a run after a bike just got a oil filter. Huh. I’ve seen some minor differences with M8’s from ac’s.. pipes don’t matter as much with modern motors .. in fact, I’ve seen torques drop off from a few different t slip-ons. We have also seen that exhausts do not make as much a difference on the M8's.
      Check out this link, with quite a few dyno charts, you can see with a True Performance Air Cleaner that there are some pretty good gains in HP and TQ. 8-12% increase (not talking about the epa compliant air cleaners masquerading as Stage X A/C's)

    I installed a crankcase vent on my trans cover to relieve crankcase pressure(blowby) with one way valve to maintain vacuum, on my 2017 Road King Special, to help mitigate/prevent sumping issues. With that said, will the Outlaw High Performance oil filter help prevent sumping due to the expected higher oil flow rate? Your videos have been a great source of info for me btw.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you are finding the videos useful! Thanks for the kind words. 👍
      The vacuum thing is an unproven theory. One day we will take the time to do some testing and publish the results. Regardless, your bike will still run much better with an EBS, see this video- th-cam.com/video/EfDeFZblMck/w-d-xo.html
      Vented dipsticks and transmission cover vents do NOT take the place of external breather systems.
      There is still hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake.
      The folks that sell vented dipsticks and trans cover vents, have it right in their product description that they do not prevent all that crap from going into your intake.
      Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..."
      Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content.
      IF you have an older M8, with the older oil pump and you are concerned about sumping...OR, IF you have a built engine with higher compression, then it may be beneficial to do an EBS And a vented dipstick or trans cover vent.
      No, there is no reason to believe that the higher flowing performance oil filter will reduce the chance of sumping.
      However, if you do not have one already, an inexpensive shorty sump plug will reduce the chance of sumping.
      Here is a link to it- www.dkcustomproducts.com/milwaukee-eight-feuling-sump-plug.htm

    Hey DK, was wondering how these filters would work with say upgraded oil pumps like S&S. You mentioned here that the increase flow allows for more power as the engine isn’t working as hard to push the oil through these filters like they do with paper ones, and keeps from hitting the bypass on oem style ones.
    So with say an upgraded oil pumps, they will he pushing more oil through the engine, would this have any negative affects to say not building enough oil pressure or anything else? Just looking for some insight as to not shoot myself in the foot later on. Thanks!

      There is a lot of information at the following link, but I will list a few facts right here, and then the rest of them can be seen at the link below. These are the reasons we run them on our own bikes.
      1. Paper filters are rated nominally. This means they can let some particles as large as 100 microns thru.
      2. It also means that they are uneven in their filtering and can get clogged up more easily, creating more drag on the oil pump.
      3. Paper filters regularly go into bypass on start-up and high RPM, and when that happens, NO Filtration is occurring.
      4. Permanent oil filters are rated an absolute of 35 microns (below the limit of human visibility). and rarely, if ever, going into bypass.
      5. They have a magnet that pre-filters the oil.
      6. After around 10 oil changes, it is less expensive to use a permanent oil filter than a paper one.

    Nice video! I'm really thinking about going this route but HD "brags" about their OEM filters being designed to filter down to 5 microns. How does this permanent filter compare in that respect? Or maybe that's part of the filter media problem that your permanent filter solves? Just thinking about MOCO's warranty stance (which is really annoying!). Thanks!

      Here is a small excerpt with the dirty secret of micron ratings...how the micron rating applies to oil filters. The HD OEM filters and aftermarket paper filters are rated on AVERAGES, percentages and multiple passes, so a 10-micron-rated paper filter may be letting particles 100 microns and larger through.

      Aftermarket paper filters are rated on AVERAGES, percentages and multiple passes, so a 10-micron-rated paper filter may be letting particles 100 microns and larger through. The Outlaw High Performance Permanent Oil filter is has an absolute micron ratings rather than nominal, they put less of a load on the oil pump, so more power to the rear tire, and they are much more economical in the long run.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for your comment and for watching the video.
      It is easy to have an opinion and write about it without any proof, data or understanding.
      If you are interested in understanding, below is an explanation, and a link to the source....and, of course, you can google and find actual information too.
      " Under ideal conditions, the bypass valve will never open. When it opens, the oil by passes the filter and goes on through to the motor, obviously unfiltered. It is a safety valve.
      However, in real operation, it opens often. One example is when you start the motor when cold. The oil is thick and does not pass easily through the filtration medium, thus building up to a high pressure drop. So, the bypass valve opens to prevent oil-starvation of the motor. How long it stays open is dependent on how cold the oil is and how long it takes to get near operating temperature.
      Another example can occur when the motor is fully warmed. At idle, the oil pressure is about 15 to 20 psi, and the pressure drop across the filter is about 1 or 2 psi. You take off towards the redline, and quickly build oil pressure. During that full-throttle acceleration the pressure drop across the filter will exceed the bypass setting, and send unfiltered oil to the motor, until the pressure across the filter has time to equalize. During a drag race, shifting through the gears, the bypass will open several times.
      A third example, which you should never experience with frequent oil and filter changes, is when a filter becomes clogged."

    • @MEGLADAD

      @@DKCustomProducts Yeah that's what I mean about the quality the air filter in a K&N type has a mesh which allows better air flow apposed to a standard paper element with a sponge backing. The filter element is medical grade, 304 stainless steel micronic filter cloth. The country of origin varies. They all are rated at an absolute 35 microns.
      There are many companies that make this type of filter. The main differences between them is the housing the filter sits in.
      For many years we used and sold the K&P version of this filter.
      We moved away from K&P because we have quite a few Customers that race. For the track everything needs to be safety wired and the K&P does not have a nut at the end with a hole for the safety wire.

Because it literally will only filter to 35 micron I would suggest that you never put one of these on an engine that you want to last very long even one of the worst paper filters will filter out iron dust used for magnaflux out at a rather large rate, where it will flow through this filter without even slowing down.
