Today I'm going to discuss why A Link To The Past perfected the Zelda formula. Establishing the benchmark for the rest of the series.

I usually don’t like sharing this story because it’s extremely personal but I figured I should. After wanting a Super Nintendo at age 7 I finally got one at age 11 and when I saw the game that I got I was extremely disappointed. I had never played Zelda nor did I like that genre of game design, my oldest sister said don’t worry let’s play together and up to that point she and I hardly even talked to each other since we were half siblings and she was 15 years older than I was, long story short we had a blast playing this game and our relationship became a solid as gold! She recently passed away due to breast cancer but every time I hear the sound when the tri force is uniting at the beginning of the game, till this moment I still get the chills. Zelda a link to the past is not only my favorite Zelda game but my favorite game of all TIME!
That's a sweet story. I know she watches over you and I know she's glad to see you still enjoying the game you both enjoyed playing together. I just started playing the GBA version on Switch since I've never played that version. Now when I'm playing it I'll be thinking of you two :) I'll dedicate this playthrough to both of you.

Well, you can only break Aghanim's Barrier with the Master Sword, so fair's fair
Not sure if this could ever come up outside a randomizer, but you can reach Aghanim's chamber with the Magic Cape (to bypass the barrier) and the Fighter's Sword (you need some kind of sword to cut the curtain in front of his room).

Alttp is not just my favorite Zelda game, it’s my favorite game ever. This was a joy to watch, even if you didn’t play it back at launch it’s clear you get the hype. Now you gotta try out the randomizer for it lol
its my best friends favorite zelda, so i appreciate how much context he gives it in this video, and how he explains everything, and why he likes what he likes about it. this is a great video. I never bothered to play zelda until OoT but my best friend always swore by a link to the past, which is why i got OoT when it came out on the n64 and we beat that game so many times when we were kids lol.

Ah man a Link to the Past was so good. I’m paraphrasing EgoRapter but I feel like it described it best. A Link to the Past feels like it’s the first game; the definitive Zelda game.
That game is amazing.
He had some valid points about OoT as well, but I forgive that game for its flaws. LttP perfected what came before, while OoT pioneered new ground, suffering from a few flaws while doing so.
@@IzunaSlap A few flaws? It retold the story from ALttP in a worse way and used the Mario 64 engine in a worse way than Mario 64-- a game that came out a year before OoT! The game wasn't even rushed and yet the devs still couldn't make the game function properly after an additional year of development! I don't rank Majora's Mask in my top five, but I really don't see why people love OoT so much when MM did everything better. And the devs optimized the hell out of the engine!
@@IzunaSlapIn terms of gameplay, OoT certainly innovated quite a bit, pioneering 3D adventure games. In terms of the game's structure however, it is essentially a 1-to-1 replica of LttP. 3 easier dungeons in the past "light world" followed by six trickier dungeons in the future "dark world". Then you go to the final dungeon, play tennis, and then fight Ganon.
@@logusbogus76 Also Navi and the unskippable cutscenes and slow text annoyed me when i played the game for the first time (don't get me started with bad UI like the huge iron boots problem on the Water Temple), if i replay a 3D style old Zelda game it would be Twilight Princess (literally light and dark world again with a fortune teller and a similar map design), not Ocarina of Time.
The N64 just aged terribly.
My best friend had this incredible treehouse and he had a SNES in one of the rooms and in the summer of 1994 he got Zelda Link to the past for his birthday and we played and beat the game together that summer. The smells of summer , rain storms, swimming in the pool , waking up early and play Zelda in that tree house made for the best summer ever and why Zelda Link to the past is my favorite game in the franchise .
Got a fussy feeling from christmas -92 when l played this. Probably the best holyday in my childhood thanks to this game.

I got it for my birthday in 1992. I had it for a good while, but hadn't beaten it yet, then one of my mom's co-workers told her it had monsters and it was evil. She returned it. I bought it again about a year later.
Something so impactful having to fight the first three bosses again in Ganon's Tower. It really shows you how far you came from the first bit of the game. For some reason, I always felt like this Link was just trying to find his way back home, as a kid.
It's pretty impressive how many of their series nintendo basically perfected on the SNES. Super Mario World, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Kirby Superstar are all like perfect games, and way ahead of their time.
Damn as a kid, I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get into the 2nd dark world dungeon, and was blocked off half the dark world map cause no hookshot.
...until I wandered into the woods in the light world and found a way into the portal without the Titan's Mitt. Mindblowing moment for me among many in this game, leading it to become my favorite Zelda game
This is also my favorite by a wide margin. It's the only Zelda I'd say that's deserving of a full remake

Legendary game
I was introduced to Zelda with Oot, which was late given my age and I love it. If I had to choose between Oot and A link to the Past, I couldn't., They are both so amazing in their own ways.
Zelda 3 back in 92 without a guide was not an easy game.
But it was an amazing experience it felt epic.
I actually thought the game was coming to an end after the first 3 dungeons.

I got surprised when there's a whole dark world to beat.
Also the Ice Palace was good because it only appeared linear the puzzle to actually go ahead made me feel really smart when I finally beat it and now after playing it ao many times it's easy 😋
A link to the past is also my favorite zelda game. I remember watching the commercials on TV and it ignited a fire in me to play it! and I was already a huge zelda fan, having been well versed in zelda 1 and 2 and the cartoon, and when a link to the past came out, I was over the moon with happiness!

Edit: To expand on this is of course Isaiah 53 where you have the servant being crushed by God as an offering for sin for others, who dies and sees life and his seed afterwards, who dies with thieves and in a rich man's tomb, and who was despised and rejected, so why there is a common view of two messiahs, Ben yosef and Ben David, one messiah as the suffering servant and another as the conqueror who sets up the kingdom. Isaiah 52 the messiah draws Israel back to himself.
Some fun and sad things are like people would say Jesus didn't exist despite Tacitus, Suetonius, Pliny the younger, Lucian etc and the apostles writings and the successors/church fathers of the apostles/bishops writings and josephus, because "Nazareth doesn't exist" until of course Nazareth was discovered, or another one, "there was no synagogue in capnernaum" until we found it, or Thomas Payne in age of reason "Bible is false because there were no kings during Jesus's time" until we found King Herod Agrippa's coins, or "Jesus wasn't buried in a tomb because crucifixion victims weren't buried in tombs" until we found crucifixion victims with the nails still in tombs in tombs.
More cool things, are Jesus sweating blood in the garden of Gethsemane, this is a real phenomenon called Hematidrosis where death row inmates sweat blood, also another when Jesus is pierced and water and blood come out this actually happens when water builds around the lungs, it confused some early church fathers on the spiritual meaning, but it's a real phenomenon that occurs as well. Many rabbis into gematria etc say there is a curse upon reading Daniel 9 because it says Messiah The Prince must come and bring in eternal righteousness before the destruction of Solomon's temple, no wonder they say that as then if Messiah didn't come before 70 a.d. there is no messiah, those who have divided messiah into two were confused if the messiah would come riding on a donkey or horse, so the two messiahs, as opposed to the jews who believe in Jesus and himself, who state himself and two arrivals. Of course this is why Islam falls quickly because while they call Jesus messiah they don't understand what it means, and Muhammad of course denied the historical fact of Jesus dying by crucifixion (Which besides tacitus mentioning pontius pilate doing it to him, we even have an inscription that was uncovered oh pilate and dates lining up with his time being the procurator/prefect over Jerusalem) besides Muhammad being the total opposite of Jesus, Muhammad had sex with his child bride Aisha who was nine, he beheaded and crucified people, said not to trust jews and Christians, he had Ethiopian slaves and called them raisin heads, he called jews monkeys and rats, he slaughtered villages and the wives of families he killed said you can take them and have sex with them, he got caught having sex with his slave by Aisha and said he would not do it anymore then conveniently "Allah" comes and says it's fine and he can, he's a textbook false prophet, with of course takiyah being they will lie to you about what I said above, Islam is meant to subjugate the world I'd into belief by force, if you don't convert you must pay a tax, if you don't pay it you die. Allah has no love for unbelievers unlike Jesus who loves his enemies and we are meant to love all even to death, I'd write more but youtube doesn't like long messages, with eastern thought eternal universe doesn't fit the mold because and infinite amount of successive events becoming then impossible to have the present, we would never reach today because we would always have a yesterday or event before this moment, an immaterial, spaceless, timeless, mind (agency) bringing space-time into reality, is the best explanation for why anything exists including someone as amazing and as lovely as yourself 😊 So the disciples who say "For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty." And "13If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith. 15In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God. Since the witnesses knew whether or not they were lying and knew what it would mean to continue to say he did in fact rise and is the Messiah and God in the flesh then yes I believe them as The Messiah had to come during that time, a mind/agency creating the universe is the best cause for reality, Jesus is the most moral, truthful and charismatic and loving and honest person there is, and the most important and influential, (Buddha said he was still searching for truth, Jesus say, "I am the truth, the way and the life") Jesus gives us love and salvation as a gift without earned merit by us, not working our way to the truth or God or eternal destiny through every other religious and spiritual framework, he loves you and cares so much for you before he created you and wants a living relationship with you here and now not just after you die 😊 There's a million other things to cover that I want to say but this is probably a good stopping point but Jesis wants to remove the shadow in your life and Jesus wants you as you are right now he wants your heart and to live in you and you to know his love personally 😊 I had people prophesy over me very specific things nobody else knew about my past, things I was thinking or experienced even just the day before, Jesus healed me of sleep paralysis I had for years, depression and loneliness, I had a dream of a woman named Heather and a voice telling me their dad had died, a couple days later i meet them and they tell me about how they had just lost their dad that week, I feel God telling me to sit down and close my eyes and I see an outline of someone going to the bathroom very bizarre, then shortly after someone out of the blue asking me to pray for them as they are having trouble going to the bathroom, another was I ask Jesus alone "are you my buddy?" A couple hours later someone contacts me and they say "Yes Jesus is saying yes he is your buddy" another time was I obsessing a little over this blue suit and someone prophecies "I see you in this blue suit" etc, another time I was testing this whole thing and I'm about to be prophecied over and I have my Google notes out I had tried writing out a little story and it was about a fire and forest being burnt down and I ask God to confirm if he wants me to write this and sort of as a test because everything had been scary accurate and the person right after says "God wants you to be his little stick lit ablaze with his love, it may not seem like much but one small flame can burn down a whole forest" 😂 another one was I had this. Surreal vision looking at stars, shortly after someone messages me saying Jesus is looking at a telescope with you saying to you "everything I have is yours even the stars" another one I was in the bathroom asking God for a message for my friend Moses in Nigeria and as I'm leaving the bathroom i freeze in place and go into this bizarre trance like Peter in the book of acts and I see my friend Moses as a child playing with a toy firetruck and Jesus sitting next to him with love, I quickly tell them and they are in shock as they had just thrown away that toy that same day, another time I had gotten a word from God about someone close to me who hadn't accepted Jesus and that they had been praying to God secretly, I told them that and the look on their face was priceless as I had no idea they had been praying to God at all, they were shook 😄 this is only a handful of many a 100 times in just the last 12 months after 5 years of me being born again, there's so many more amazing things that have happened but you are beautiful and desired of God, he is a gentleman and will not force you to choose him or love him but he loves so so much, he's asking you if you will come, he will love you and cherish you everyday of your life, he will never abandon you, I beg you to take a chance and not reject God's love for you, he wants to heal you and you to enjoy a living relationship between you, God bless you so much, Jesus says to come to him for rest your weary soul he is humble and meek and tender and gentle, he loves you so much he knows everything about you, nothing about you is unimportant to him 😭❤❤ If you repent and call on his name you will be saved from hell and Jesus's wrath and judgement for all have sinned!! ❤ For God so loved The World that gave his only begotten son that whoever should believe in him will not perish but have eternal life!! 💙🙌🏻 repent all have sinned and fallen short!!❤️🔥❤♥️

I don't remember ever seeing a commercial. I remember my dad's boss' son had the game. I'd go over to his house a lot. He was one of those kids who want you to watch and don't even think about asking to even touch the controller cord, much less anything else.

Man, when I was a kid I spent many hours drawing maps and item subscreens for my own idealized "Zelda 4". I'd still do that if I had more time.
An 'A Link To The Past' memory is honestly what started my entire love for gaming. This may be silly , but this memory is very important to me. When I was about 9 years old, I was trying to defeat Gannon in A Link to The Past. Most people who have played the game know that it's iteration of Gannon is possibly the most challenging in the series, and I was very young at the time, so this was probably one of the hardest things I'd ever done in life at that point. I was in the living room at my grandmother's house trying (for the hundredth time) to beat him, and it so happened that most of my close family was also there. Well, it finally happened! I beat him! I was so happy! My family did something very unexpected, they started cheering! It's not possible to overstate the joy and pride I felt at that moment. I had completed the journey, I WAS the hero, and the people I loved cheered me on for my victory.
This might sound ridiculous, but I'm pretty sure that moment changed at least one aspect of my life. I became a GAMER, and to this day it's one of my happiest memories.
My brother, i have never played a link to the past, i started with OoT, but my best friend absolutely loved this game, so i know just about everything about it, and you clearly love this game. What an excellent video. You give great context for nearly everything, and you explain your opinions, and the entire video is very easy to follow. Great work. I subbed. I hope more ALttP fans stumble upon this gem of a video.
"It could also be a naming play on Link's name" ..., It definitely was. It doesn't have to be one or the other. It is clearly a play on the character's name AND a reference to the history of Hyrule.
Great video about my favorite Zelda game. I believe it's called "A Link to the Past" because it's supposed to be a prequel to the original LoZ and AoL. I remember seeing this in the player's guide and in game magazines back in the day. One nitpick is you said Zelda 2 "failed to properly adjust the formula to 2D", but the first 4 games are all 2D. I know you probably meant a side-scrolling perspective, but I also think it's worth mentioning how many ideas from AoL made it into ALttP like magic, towns, certain items (like the hammer), ect.

When i was growing up I was usually one of the last kids to get the newest console, when I finally got a Snes after everyone else it came packaged with A Link to the Past. Not being a stranger to the Zelda series and having played the first two on the NES this was really the Zelda game that made me a fan of the series for life.
Soundtrack in this game is an absolute banger. Wife goes nuts cause I’m constantly playing the songs on Spotify in the car lol

Doesn't matter how many times you play it, the ganon tower is so much hype to go through. Also, all the scenes you get while the game credits play (after completing the story) is so awesome to watch.
A link to the past has aged likr fine wine. Everything about it holds up extrememly well. And its still one of my top games of all time

This game isn’t just my favourite Zelda game, but favourite game of all time. I have 16 bit link tattood on my arm/he was my first tattoo. There’s just so much magic about ALTTP. The way randomizer works for this game is incredible too. 216 item locations and multiple ways to beat the game. It gives you a new experience to beat the game over and over.
I love this game. What I love about it is that you pretty much jump straight into the action, no long winded tutorial areas.
Great video, you're really spot on. I did play both NES Zeldas as a kid but never went into them because of their very cryptic nature. Remember that in the 1980's there wasn't any internet to find out the solution. When I discovered ALTTP, that game was such a shock, a video game experience that I never felt was possible, relegating the 2 older games to the status of prototypes. ALTTP invented the Zelda formula, bringing the most to the lore of the franchise. That's why it is so important to the series.
Amen, brother. ! I love BotW and TotK, but ALTTP is to this day my GOAT since I first played it 30 + years ago. ( And if you haven't played the randomizer, I highly recommend !!! )

It was the first Zelda I played, and also the first one to complete. I’m definitely nostalgic about it lol. I introduced my 8 year-old niece to the franchise with this game. She has seen the previews for Echoes and is so excited about it! 🥰

In regards to the ice boss, instead of using the fire rod, use the Bombos medallion. Its attack will instantly shatter the ice protecting the boss
Agree 100 percent. A link to the past is also my favourite..it shares the 1st place podium with ocarina of time for me. Imagine a new Zelda game with todays graphics but with the a Link to the past atmosphere and story.
Huge agree! I was 12 when this came out. It was my favorite then, and still my favorite.
def my fav, grew up one the NES versions, between worlds is a very good direct sequel. the control the story, the enemies all great and the visuals hold up to this day for its style

I don’t want to brag or anything, but being young and alive while games like these were released, playing them felt like a religious experience and I still have this game on it’s original box and even the manual still smells like it’s brand new :)
The first time I played I didn't get the moon Pearl and after defeating the wizard at the castle does transported to the pyramid has a bunny took me forever but eventually work my way back to the mountain
After exploring every dungeon I completed so far it was agonizing

A Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game and tied for #1 for my all time favorite video game...FF7 (original) is tied with ALttP.

This was the first game to truly capture my imagination. Spent hours on this as a kid, literally took memonths to finish the gane. Remember being overly excited when I finally beat Ganon, running to my parents shouting "I completed Zelda, I completed Zelda" 😂
I still have my very first save file on my SNES cartridge, where it shows you how many times you died, Inhave 326 times 😂 replayed it a couple of weeks ago and had zero, so slight improvement over 25 years 😂
Also had a big brain moment on my last playthrough, exited the dungeon right after getting the second glove, got the dwarve back to light world, had my sword tempered, went back to the dungeon, Blind went down like the girls on the whatever podcast 😂
I played this with my first ever friend at 3 years old. Best game on the SNES hands down.

I've been with zeda since the original. Alttp was a personal favorite. But minus a few bad timelines, it only gets better with time. Totk and botw are awesome. I do still run the originals though. Zelda is just awesome.
I was born in the year of Zelda, 1986. The first Zelda I ever played was the Wind Waker in 2003, due to the awful circumstances in which I grew up. A Link to the Past was the first Zelda game I had ever seen played and I didn't even know what it was called back then. I just wanted to get at some super bomberman with my sisters. So I missed out on the two most iconic titles (ALttP and OoT) upon their release. Maybe that's what enables me to be objective and say that the SNES game is the best in the series and OoT is 4th after Link's Awakening and Wind Waker.
The only issue I have with A Link to the Past is the lack of a variety of dungeon music. That's really it... Everything else is absolutely top notch and holds up amazingly still. It's my second favorite game of all time after Tales of Symphonia
I was like 12/13 when this game came out and I was disappointed by it. I didn't like how you couldn't really get lost in the overworld like in the first game. I assume it's because almost every location in LttP serves a purpose and there's no real "empty" space except that screen with trees to the west of the castle that doesnt' have anything important. Also, fighting enemies kinda sucked. Still a great game but it took Ocarina of Time (basically a 3D version of LttP) to beat Zelda 1 as my favorite (despite also not having spaces to get lost in but the 3D and other things added so much)
Gameboy Advance, SNES and PS2 - those are my top consoles.
I never had played this game before, or any Zelda game aside Botw. When I played this for the first three hours, the first thing I searched on was this: "A Link To The Past is the perfect Zelda game"

Speaking as someone who lives in the pnw and has family in Nevada, I can assure you it's completely absurd, nobody would ever believe that nonsense, which is how you know this is a fantasy game.

Huh? There's no reason to remake this. The LA remake made sense because it was on GameBoy and a lot of people missed it the first time around.
I might be biased by my own nostalgia, having played OoT first as a kid, then LttP afterwards, but I think just because one game did it first, doesn't mean that game did it best. I think it laid the groundwork for which most other Zelda games would build from afterwards, but I think the 3D games all have at least some improvements over this original incarnation that's just a bit too archaic for my tastes. I can appreciate its existence in the same way that I appreciate SM64; it's established the genre for future games, but I wouldn't say they are worth going back to, after having played the more recent entries, without some.. mental preparation, for how older games function. They're just harder to go back to.
Personally, I hated the overworld traversal. Just getting from place to place was a hassle, especially when enemies respawn the instant you leave the screen tile. Pegasus boots don't alleviate the issue enough, and the fast travel flute doesn't come early enough for me. Ocarina's fast travel also took about as long, but there were more shortcuts sprinkled throughout the world, connecting Zora's River, Goron City, and Lake Hylia, all through the Lost Woods, plus far fewer hindrances between important locations.
I was so excited when I first played Tears of the Kingdom because of it's references to the Imprisoning war in the early game.
Probably not the same Imprisoning War now because of how Zelda's time travel blew up the already existing timeline. Plus alien sex.
We need a game based on the Imprisoning War.

Always viewed "A Link to the Past" as a reference to the game being set in a time before the first two Zelda games.

"vert perspective" back then it was called "birds eye view" or "top down view" not sure if the industry ever changed the terms tho lol
For me the art and concept art for ALTTP is the real zelda. OOT took it further and made is better aesthetically, but ALTTP feels like the most 'zelda' universe. I think cause how they have Link with brown hair, feels the most natural.

LTTP and OOT are yhe consummate greats of the series. Never played windwaker but from what i do hear its supposed to be another titan among the series. Botw and totk is recency bias for me but the little details they add from all the games into the "of the" series makes these two games amazing. Like its almost obvious that the depths is the dark world but not really. It wouldve been badass if the depths hads loads of dungeons and mini dungeons. Elemental dungeons etc etc.

The voice over is an AI. The person who made the video probably doesn't speak English (or doesn't speak it well) and may not have even played the game at all. It's just a video driving engagement for the promise of monetization.
why does every youtuber tell this wrong version of the magic mirror? it donst let you change from one version of the overworld to the other, it just lets you go back to the normal overworld if you are in the dark world and then places a potal back to the dark world that resets, if you use an other natural portal to the dark world and you use the mirror again to create an new portal back.
whitin the normal overworld it does nothing.
there are natural portals located all over the overworld, that lead to the dark world, but your only way back is the magic mirror.
aghanim tells you after his first defeat, that he locks you away into the dark world, not knowing you have the magic mirror that lets you go back.
Definitely my favorite Zelda game.
My ideal Zelda game is ALttP graphics but with a giant overworld, light/dark realm, like 50+ dungeons, and 40ish items including some from future 3D/2D Zelda games.
50+ dungeons would be terrible because it would be quantity over quality. It would be like the botw/totk shrines all over again. Would you rather 9-12 dungeons with their unique theme and enemies or copy pasted dungeons with the same look and enemies, seriously.
@@Vaquix000 If ALttP is the template and those dungeons are varied, decently long, and not just a 1 room puzzle... why would it be that way? Would some thematic overlap exist so they're not as unique? Probably with 50+ dungeons but they wouldn't be forced to make them short.
@@Vaquix000 I like the shrines. Not as a substitute for dungeons, but as an addition to them. The dungeon design in TotK, while not as good as previous games in the series, showed that the two philosophies can co-exist.
A link to the past was and is a great. It's not in my top 10 games. I played it when I was a kid and then when I was an adult. I'm glad it's perfect for you and glad you enjoy it. Many think Breath of the wild is the best zelda game ever, but that's where I disagree with many. Each is entitled to their own opinion.

If I recall this story was supposed to move between past and present but then got changed to light and dark world. I don’t know why a link to the past was used but maybe as a reference to those original ideas?
From what I understand at the time of the game's release it was the earliest story in the series.
The Legend of Zelda (NES) was supposed to be past and present, but the system couldn't handle that much rom data, given the chip shortage of 1987-1989. There are conflicting stories on what ALttP was supposed to be. One legend says it was an RPG with Link, a faerie, and an old mage. One legend says it had four different worlds before narrowing it down to two.
