That time Nintendo made a game about Googling

- Nintendo have developed some pretty weird games before - Splatoon, Kid Icarus Uprising, Nintendogs - but one of the weirdest is And-Kensaku for the Wii, a game all about Googling. Players had to guess which search terms were more popular out of a list, build a staircase with search results, and even stop a bomb from exploding using search results. So, join me for a brief look at how this unique and bizarre game came to be!

I'm surprised they didn't just name it "Wii Search"
that's actually better than the legitimate name
We search
@@MocaHere Wii search. Do you?
Then it would have sold better
Wii are surfing the internet
An RPG where you use words to create heroes. Kinda sounds like scribblenauts.
Daniel Cain
or *_bookworm; deluxe_*
Harry AGHHHH ITS NOT EVEN HIM!
Scribblenauts: Google edition
Search up Rule 34 and bam, instant win
Marx T.C.J. Omg! Lol
That just sounds like Google feud with extra steps
literally
but i think this game was made first
with means google feud copied
*That just sounds like slavery but with extra steps*
*Rick and Morty **_reference I see_*
That’s sounds like an awesome title for it
and sir was created before Google Feud. Therefore, you should say Google Feud is just and sir with less steps
These google-based minigames would actually work really well as part of a Jackbox game, today.
yeah, and-kensaku would be the perfect jackbox game
exaclty my thoughts, these dudes did not knew they were making a trivia game
yeah!
This could be a feature in the sequel to survive the internet, where instead of the answer to the question getting taken out of context, it searches the answer on google and gives the other player the most popular search result to take out of context. It would fit the internet theme a lot more
I wish there were more footage of... _the game_
Edit: wait hold on guys, I swear I wasn't trying to invoke that one grade school game that you can't even win, we are grown men here
Is there
Just go online and just google anything
We've all lost now...

Hey I know you
Nice video! I had no clue this even existed until the spirit appeared in Smash Ultimate, bug I love learning about obscure Nintendo games like this.
Glad you enjoyed it! Oh, and thanks for the shoutout on Twitter, by the way - any spreading of the word is super super appreciated!
@@ThomasGameDocs You're welcome! Always glad to give a shoutout to a great creator :)

the original prototype game would make a good jackbox mini-game
Or a mario party one with nintendo themed search results
Wow, I never would've thought the hardest process of making a game was naming it haha
Super interesting story, and great video as usual :D
Thanks, glad you liked it!
in many ways, the creative processes are harder than the technical processes
writing the code is in a lot of ways, easier
[short of examples when you need really advanced, fine-tuned systems, many do not]
making the engine for an RPG, or a shooter, or a puzzler, etc... is comparatively easy to the art/level/gameplay/story design and naming things. it's even worse in the committee-based process where MULTIPLE individuals have their "valuable" input about how a single art asset should turn-out. only the programmers are intended to see the code, and most others won't notice/complain as long as it doesn't have major problems with its performance/stability. the design elements will be noticed and picked-apart by everyone. that's how water-based levels get hit so hard by negative feedback, because even the hardcore gamers find them tedious or confusing/frustrating, despite the brilliant way they turn an entire level into a puzzle.
hell, right from the beginning, this shows how that design thing can be difficult just because of other people. the final design is radically different from the original, and significantly different from the intermediate that even got greenlit in the first place. honestly, the original idea in some form or another sounds pretty good, and shame that it got killed on basically the first day.
freaking Horizon zero Dawn is the perfect example of this
A robot mascot... an ANDroid!
ok
I had no idea this even existed! What a weird game, but it actually sounds fun! It's actually really cool to hear the development history of a game about which you don't know anything. I kind of put myself in the shoes of everyone involved a bit more, not knowing very well how it would end :-)
Glad you enjoyed the video! Similarly, it's a nice change to research a game that I've never come across before - I'd definitely like to do more of this sort of thing, but I don't know if I'll stumble upon something this interesting and obscure again!
Fun Fact: The Ando Kensaku Actually is a spirit in Smash Bros. Ultimate (or i think it is may be wrong)
No, you're correct! That's actually where I got the high quality picture of the character from!
Can you make a video about the creation of Miiverse?
Hmm, I'll definitely look into it! I'm not sure how many people would find it interesting though - it would be pretty niche!
@@ThomasGameDocs Ok thanks ^^
@@ThomasGameDocs i think that today's episode is even more niche ;) a video covering miiverse would be cool. You do a great job with these docs, you have a truly unique style. Best regards
Oh no... All I know about Miiverse's development is that Nintendo tried to make a program that could automatically detect when troublemakers were drawing dicks. And to make this program, the dev team looked at a wealth of examples... and yeah. The things Nintendo has done for us.
@@MarkThePage I think that's a myth.
Can I request a video on Atlus’s “Trauma Center” series? It’s relatively underrated and I would love to learn more on its development history. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I'll look into it! I don't wanna promise anything definite, since I'm super super fickle, but I'll definitely take a look!
fun fact my mom actually played that game and loved it.

Atlus in general needs recognition, or more so, "cognition," if you know what I mean.
Wake Up Get Up Get Out There . . .

Also nice Taiko Drum

XD Really?
3:26 Hey, I've seen that robot before. It's a Spirit in _Smash Ultimate!_ This is where it came from?!
Yes.
1:06 And this is how scribblenauts came to be
Great editing! I look forward to seeing more from you.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Very unique idea for a nintendo game. It's also pretty unique how you are telling and visualising the stories on how those games were made. It seems like a retelling of a personal story, something most of the "how was it made"-shows on youtube fail.
Thank you again for this video Thomas!
Aw, thank you so much! I kinda stumbled upon this visual style because I have no drawing experience or anything like that, but I'm actually really pleased with where it's ended up (if I say so myself!) So anyway, thanks for your really kind comment!
Great Video. This sorta reminds me of the Everybody Votes Channel on the Wii. A fun way to vote and guess wider opinions. RIP Wii online.
When I saw this video on my subscription box, I was like "They did what?". And then I watched it, and I went "They did what?". I had seriously never heard of this one! And I'm ashamed, for my specialty are gimmicky and weird games on Nintendo consoles! I guess stuff slips through the cracks when you ain't paying attention. Specially if it's Japan exclusive! But nonetheless, interesting stuff! Thanks for showing me something new today!
No problem, glad to show you something new! I think the times that'll happen will be few and far between, so I'd better relish in it while I still can!
The first idea was way more intresting tbh e-e
Lol
the visuals and graphics you use in your videos are a delight to watch, they're just so charming and funny
i would like to have a game like this on switch. seems fun, and with hd graphics it would be better
Humorflix YPTH y mas I agree
They'd have to make a form8dable icon that would stand the test of time for it to sell, or maybe use the Mii family of games

Sounds like a fun game, although I'm pretty sure you can't play it anymore since Nintendo pulled the plug on the Wii. I wonder if it could work on emulators.

I'd love to see a fan translation of this game.
It shouldn't be that difficult, really.

It was like Google feud for the Wii era
It’s 1:20 am. Taking a final scroll on TH-cam before bed, and now all the videos I want to watch come, making me stay up longer and longer-
There are so many ace attorney references in every video! I remember seeing Larry and Mia in the video about Miis
This channel is so underrated
You r gaining subs like a wildfire!
Kinda reminds me of Google Feud!
I can definitely see that!
thats what I was thinking
Looking at this I was like "wow, I wish I got to play this!" and then I saw all the work that went into the word sorting and I realized it would be hell to localize
entertaining as always, thank you.
Google also known as the creator of Pangolin love game.
"What is my purpose?"
"You appear in ten things you didn’t know videos."
"Oh, god."
I LOVE your channel so far, and I think it deserves a lot more attention, however I think there is just a bit too much plain silence in between cuts. Reducing the time in between them might help the video a bit smoother, however it's all up to you. I'm just a viewer trying to help.
This game sounds fun i want this game
Editor: So how many paper sound affects do you want.
Thomas: Yes.
And here we are 11 years later I have a Wii but never heard about And Search.
The concept, especially the "Which is higher" mode, inevitably reminds me of the Google Fights flash game that used to be pretty popular back in the 2000s, where you typed in two search inputs, two stick figures would start duking it out, and then the one whose search input had the higher Google results would knock out the other and win.
I really like your videos. Do you do them all yourself?
Just wanted to tell you I really like these videos. I always get somewhat nostalgic, but that's probably because it's Japan haha
" How many sites do you want to make your own version of? "
Nintendo : y e s
"Thomas handsome" lol
Didn't think I'd be hearing about ladders and stepladders in a video about googling of all things
The fact that Thomas handsome had zero search results
I work in search engine optimization and I am completely fascinated by this!! The fact that the developers got access to freaking quality rating data in 2007 is completely NUTS. I wish I could get data like that today!
Pretty cool. Very creative!
Take shot everytime you hear a page turning
damn a seach type rpg would have been sick!
You know it’s a good ending because no one got sued
Hearing all these development stories really makes you appreciate these silly ideas.
The fact that this game came out exactly on my birthday the year the month and the day
That's the predecessor of Google Feud. Interesting.
The real question...
Why wasn’t this remade in English?
I imagine it would be pretty hard to translate. That's just my guess, though.
Fun Fact: The little robot character that's in And-Kensaku is in Smash Brothers Ultimate as a spirit
It got a ad with google on this video lol
Sound effect at 4:11 scared me and I have headphones in
That's... Actually pretty cool
Haha, glad you think so!
"...and I kept Googling and it kept working"
Loved this one!
Thanks Ellie!

That's literally what the add said.
Anonymous Somebody bruh i hate those ads lol
So the damage is based on the search amount eh?

Its a very creative idea, maybe a little too creative which is why they had some struggles. However i wish games with this level of creativity were more popular and prevelant

Oh so they named it like someone would say “hey let’s play AND search”

Sounds pretty fun.
Glad this game was lucky enough to have a happy ending, unlike some others!
I'd like to note that Shift, the people who developed "And-Kensaku", are the same people who developed God Eater 1&2, Devil Dice (XI) and Code Vein.
To be honest, this really surprised me when I found out about that!
